So as I’m playing Midnight Protocol, studying how best to get around that Skorpion ICE so I can lower the bridge to the encryption node I need to reach that data vault before the SysOp moseys over here to ping me, each decision is accompanied by a machinegun burst of typing on the keyboard. And I can’t help but think, “Yes indeed, I am hacking!” Rattle rattle rattle clack clack, and the data vault has been revealed! To the black market to shop for some new programs and maybe a deck upgrade!

These days, it’s all on offer in a hundred different games. But without the magic or at least the competence, it’s just a flurry of sloppy colors and shapes, a whirlwind of ineffectual nostalgia, absent any innovation, creativity, confidence, or finesse. It took many years, but now that it’s being used to prop up a piece of hardware, Ratchet & Clank finally feels like the soulless corporate property it’s become.

Painkiller's nutso violence meets Titanfall's nutso nimbleness meets Doom's nutso pacing, all in a grimfuture Warhammer world cobbled together by a nutso French studio.

Biomutant is what happens when someone makes an Ubisoft game, but without Ubisoft’s resources, experience, talent, or even willingness to take risks. With the exception of the art design, everything about Biomutant feels safe and familiar, but without the confidence or polish needed to make it effective. Safe, familiar, and hopelessly lost in the detritus-littered wasteland between design document and actual game.

Capcom is even remastering them! But as they accrue 6s, 7s, and 8s for their new releases, as they explore new characters and settings, as they move the series forward, shouldn’t they actually, you know, move the series forward? Shouldn’t they aspire to something more than the usual dime-a-dozen horror walking simulators? The work of these imaginative artists deserves a better game. Lady Dimitrescu deserves a better game. But mostly, Resident Evil fans like me deserve a better game.

It will get you invested. It will make you care. Because when winning isn’t everything and mere speed isn’t the ultimate goal, when you progress by racing well instead of just fast, all that’s left is the joy of learning. That is what Project Cars 3 is ultimately about, what it’s built to deliver, what it’s carefully tuned to create: the joy of getting better at something.

The story has found new ways to observe familiar stories, even though you’ve spent 100 hours playing Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and then another 50 playing Hades. A few thousand years later, and it turns out Greek mythology still isn’t played out. And thanks to Ubisoft, neither are open worlds.

This trailer loaded with metal bars will get where it’s going eventually. Like progress itself, as sure as torque creates traction, trucks are inevitable. Snowrunner is what happens when an immovable object meets an irresistible force. As long as the irresistible force has a winch, the immovable object will lose.

It might not have a first-person view, or upgradable cars, or a career mode RPG, or demanding graphics, or product placement, or a shouting co-driver, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less of a rally racing game. Instead, it’s an adoring and adorable idyll about taking a relaxing drive through a lovely countryside, and doing it as fast as you can.

I just pull up the real-time overlay, click around a bit, and now I’m playing a completely different type of character. When you’ve got this kind of flexibility and variety constantly at your fingertips, when this sort of intricate interactivity is always available to distract you from potential frustration, a Dark Souls game isn’t quite so soul crushing anymore.
