  • The story is mediocre and predictable, but it’s really not what you’re there for. You’ll see each plot point coming from a mile away, but you’ll be too busy shooting and stabbing (and having fun doing it on PC) that you won’t really mind.

  • The fast-paced FPS gameplay needs refining and is constantly slowed down by the RPG elements which in turn are not allowed to shine through the FPS aspect. I actually think this setting would lend itself more to a Skyrim-style RPG than a first-person shooter but this is what we got and I am actually a bit gutted that I can’t like it more than I do.

  • As a whole, Necromunda: Hired Gun is one of the more enjoyable shooters to come out this year. Unfortunately, minor performance issues on the PS4 prevent the title from truly shining. I also draw issues with how boss fights play out, and among other concerns. Other than that, it is a great game to lose yourself in for short bursts. So, it’s a good thing that it doesn’t require the player to stick around longer than necessary.

Still to this day the game suffers lots of problems making it feel like it was just sent out the door long before it was done. This is what makes me appreciate games getting time to be complete before launch as I really think this title had potential.

  • Necromunda: Hired Gun is better than both those games, with clear ambitions to be Doom in the Warhammer 40k universe, with hints of Titanfall 2 and Shadow Warrior 2. However, a serious lack of polish and some unnecessary padding keeps it from being great, and it’s still got nothing on the criminally underrated and oft-forgotten Warhammer 40k: Space Marine – the pinnacle of action games set in that universe.

  • Necromunda Hired Gun has a great atmosphere and some good ideas, but the game overall is disappointing. The initial excitement soon enough turns into frustration and regret. The numerous issues manage to almost completely ruin the game experience, and make you forget about the good parts.

  • Hired Gun is a game that punches above its weight in that it tries to take on too many things at once and struggles under the sheer weight of the number of ideas it introduces. In many ways it is better than its AAA peers because of its audacity, in other ways it is an example of a game that needed a few features cut.

  • At $40 Necromunda: Hired Gun is a bit of the pricey side. In a world where Doom Eternal is regularly on sale for $20, I can’t recommend paying twice that to play an inferior knock-off, even if it is fun with great environmental design. It might be worth picking up right away if you’re a Warhammer 40K fanatic or desperate for more Doom Eternal style action, otherwise wait for a sale, a bundle, or a price cut.

  • Necromunda: Hired Gun had the potential to be a great little romp into the delightfully dreary world of Warhammer 40k, but it missed the mark on getting there.

  • Painkiller's nutso violence meets Titanfall's nutso nimbleness meets Doom's nutso pacing, all in a grimfuture Warhammer world cobbled together by a nutso French studio.
