10. Electronauts

Forming the perfect marriage of neon lights, electronic music, and VR capabilities, this casual music game will let you unleash your inner DJ. Electronauts wraps itself in stereotypical neon lights, which, for many, seems the fitting representation of the disc jock life. But, even if that's not your thing, critics like COGConnected would tell you that's not a problem. "I’m still no die-hard of EDM, but the game has certainly opened my eyes to the wide variety of music..and just how fun it can be to manipulate it."

Manipulation is pretty much key in Electronauts where you get to create beats and remix their admittedly obscure but solid track selection. They also have plenty of youtube tutorials which will gladly you the ropes.

Push Square may have given it a mere 7 out of 10, but they enjoyed this kind of accessibility that makes it fun for any kind of player. It has a playscore of 8.38.

9. Red Matter

Released just last December 2018, Red Matter came long after the advent of virtual reality games. And, you can definitely see it with the way it handles the technicalities of the platform.

This story-driven adventure revolves around aCold War-like situation set in the far future. In it, you, the player, will take on the role of astronaut slash agent Epsilon as he ventures to Saturn's moon to investigate a shady top-secret research project. Maybe Ad Astra without the daddy issues?

Among all four of its critic reviews, Red Matter was praised for how it incorporated the strengths of the platform in the game. This is demonstrated in TSA's review where they called it the most immersive puzzle game, "thanks in no small part to how well it makes use of VR..." On top of its technicals, it's atmosphere and setting also play huge part, as PS Universe says "Red Matter nails its soviet-era underground bunker with a realistic visual flair."

It has a playscore of 8.39.

8. I Expect You To Die

If you thought the sci-fi was a great, familiar place to start on the VR, wait till you see this.

Parodying the iconic spy movies we grew up with, I Expect You To Die puts you in the suits and bowtie of a world-class agent. With the aid of a wry narrator ala Stanley Parable, it guides you through puzzles and escapes the room scenarios that all seem to capture the ridiculousness and the ridiculous risks of the spy trade.

Despite getting ratings below eight, reviewers like Upload VR still poured praise on the title. According to them "Between the motion controls and the immersive view of virtual reality, it does a good job of putting you there in complex and sometimes dangerous situations." For Destructoid who gave the game an 8, I Expect You To Die even had unexpected effects, saying "even after I had finished the handful of scenarios, I anxiously wanted to see how others would approach the same..."

It has a playscore of 8.46.

7. Sairento VR

This next game banks on the immersive powers of virtual reality by selling you the experience of becoming a powerful cyber ninja.

In Sairento VR, you're equipped with all the tools you need to be the stealthy Japanese cyborg you probably wanted to be. As fun as it is to play, a lot of critics admit that the VR experience isn't exactly perfect. This sentiment shows up in many of the reviews, but each of them agrees that its strengths far outweigh the game's technical glitches.

That's exactly GameSpew's view saying "it's worth putting up with these glitchy moments...because Sairento VR is such a ridiculous, over-the-top joy to play." COGConnected pretty much shared these sentiments when they said "the swordplay left much to be desired, but everything else more than made up for it."

Being a hit among gamers with a Gamer Score a whopping 9.03, it shows Sairento hit it off with a total playscore of 8.46.

6. The Persistence

We're back on another creepy space station in this title from Firesprite Limited. Virtual Reality was practically built for immersion and if there's one genre where that fits perfectly, it's horror.

It's a wonder we got this far in this list without them but Persistence may prove to be a fitting entrance. What makes it stand out is its use of procedural generation which adds replayability and tension to their narrative. As TechRaptor says, "Each run on the spaceship saw me rethink how to approach enemies."

Some critics like PS Lifestyle may have given it a less than awesome score, it is, for the most part, a solid title still. Other than some moments where it felt unfair to them, they ultimately recommend it. "...while it does have its flaws, there’s something incredibly satisfying about sneaking up behind enemies and zapping the stem cells out of their skulls."

Adding replayability to the VR horror formula, it has a playscore of 8.49.

5. Ghost Giant

VR is always about unique experiences, and this game gets the experience of having a friend. From the makers of the quirky tiles Fe and Flipping Death, Zoink Games tells an interesting story of a small cat and his newfound friend as they go on to solve puzzles and keep life together. Unlike other games, Ghost Giant isn't exactly impressive in terms of technical innovations.

According to IGN who gave it an 8.30, it may look like any other object-based puzzler, but it has a kind of charm has tugged at many a critics’ heartstrings. Giving it a decent score of 7.00, even Destructoid couldn't disagree saying: "It feels like a VR advancement of a classic PC point-and-click adventure game, albeit one with a great look, phenomenal sound design, and a story I'm not ashamed to admit had me choking up a bit toward the end."

An essential VR game if only for its story, it has a playscore of 8.5.

4. Blood & Truth

An exclusive for the PSVR, Blood & Truth might be a great fix for anyone that's still on that John Wick high. This VR title evolved out of the brutal gangster action of PlayStation VR Worlds' London Heist. That makes it all the more impressive to see how far SIE London Studio has come.

Just like Sairento VR, Blood & Truth also has its share of glitches. According to Upload VR, some of these flaws come out in the form of their sometimes frustrating moment system. But, despite this and their pacing issues, they ultimately called Blood & Truth a "tour de force" for the PSVR. "The action is pulse-pounding and so bombastic it rivals even the biggest summer blockbusters."

IGN said almost the same thing in their review: "Blood & Truth’s intense shooting action made me feel as cool as its characters, immersing me in its world even as its limited movement did its best to remind me I wasn’t in full control."

For a taste of the action star package, Blood & Truth has you covered with a score of 8.57.

3. Beat Saber

Beat Saber could very well be one of the first faces of VR. One, because it makes you feel like Jedis and Siths if you're into that. And two, because you'll look really cool if you're good at it.

Beat Saber is a rhythm game on the VR, and it stands out with its surrealistic neon environment. Swinging around sabers and slicing through red and blue blocks at the perfect moment can be quite a workout. For IGN, giving the game a 9.50, "Beat Saber literally leaves me breathless" Later on their review, IGN also noted the game's sparse tracks on the release.

However, a lot has changed since, with users allowed to create custom songs and with a few released DLCs and updates. Game Informer also states that Beat Saber is a great poster boy for the platform. It doesn't have majestic surroundings, but it "uses VR to place you into the music and taps into your carnal desire to hit things with swords."

It has a playscore of 8.97.

2. Moss

Beat Saber was markedly sparse in the environmental aspect, but not here in Polyarc's VR adventure. In Moss, we are treated to a feast of visual delights. It tells the story of a young mouse named Quill who awakens ancient magic and wanders around the vast woodlands. Unlike her, the world is large and you get front seats to the action as you guide her through the journey.

Wonder and awe are feelings you'll get a lot, and it's reflected in the reviews it received upon release. Wccftech.com gave the game 9, complimenting the comfort and ease that the world offers. "the forest world that Quill calls her home is a character all its own."

But aside from its sheer beauty, it also offers up an enduring friendship between you and Quill that will make its three-hour storyline too short of a stay. GameSpew suggests, "when she squeaks and holds up her adorable little arm, make sure you don’t leave her hanging."

It has a playscore of 8.98.

1. ASTRO BOT Rescue Mission

A lot of our games so far have excelled in individual aspects but as the number one game, this VR title has managed to balance immersion, story, and technicals--all in one, straightforward package.

Astro Bot Rescue came to us at the tail end of last year and has since stolen the show entirely. As usual, it isn't groundbreaking.

Destructoid gave it a 7.50 for relying on the VR wow factor, but even they couldn't deny its responsiveness and polished finish. There's also a lot to love about the way it translated the platforming we know into VR. Game Informer goes on to say, "Astro Bot Rescue Mission feels like it came out of nowhere to quietly prove that familiar genres can feel like new experience."

Add that to the work they put in on the presentation, controls, and level design, ASTRO BOT becomes a game that's just genuinely fun to play. It has a playscore of 9.05.

10. Bridge Constructor Portal

Opening our list is a team-up between Aperture Labs and Bridge Constructors. Take the role of an employee of Aperture Science and build bridges, ramps and other constructions in numerous test chambers.

However, instead of the regular bridge-constructing, you’ll be able to make things easier (or complicated) with the presence of these physics-defying portals. If you’re expecting a pure Portal game, this ain’t it. The cake is a lie, but the bridge constructing is real. Solve a myriad of puzzles similar to Portal’s problem, without the ever-present portal gun.

Game Grin’s Dominoid gave it a 9 out of 10. Praising the game’s steep learning curve and difficulty. Saying that, “It’s tough as nails, and you’ll need to put some hours in if you want to complete it, but it’s addictive and totally worth it.”

There is an apparent challenge here, and it’s not for kids who don’t like science. There’s plenty of brain-teasers in each level and it requires careful thinking and planning. It has a playscore of 8.24.

9. Dungeons 3

There isn’t a lot of games that let you play the bad guy, let alone the embodiment of EVIL. Kalypso Media’s RTS game lets you finally play like that one crazy guy who designs a treacherous dungeon.

Dungeons 3 is a continuation of the previous Dungeon titles, but this time, there are enough resources for you to mess around against the helpless heroes that venture into your personal hell. Game Watcher gave this one an 8.50, citing that, “Dungeons 3 is plain, straight, addictive fun from start to finish.”

3 manages to add more nuance to the art of the Dungeon Keeper titles while adding a bit of meta-humor into the mix. But despite the additional content, the game is far from perfect. Game Grin gave it a 7.50 out of 10, saying that, “A fun, interesting dungeon builder that lacks confidence in its own identity.”It doesn’t really have the same oomph that was once captured us in the previous titles, but it does make up for its massive amount of things to do. In short, it’s not quite bad.

It receives a playscore of an 8.29.

8. Parkitect

This is made for those who were still around during the early days of RollerCoaster Tycoon. Especially to those who spent hours and hours building that perfect railway system. Parkitect is a love-letter to that kind of feeling. It puts you once again as a businessman responsible to build the best theme park in the world. How would you create that perfect park? It’s all up to you. Throughout your proprietorship, you’ll be doing most of that “Walt Disney” stuff.

Destructoid loved this game so much they gave it a 9 out of 10. Asking the question, “... "is this game a modern-day RollerCoaster Tycoon?" the answer is an absolute yes.” As a Steam title, the game is open for fun experimentation in the Steam ‘Workshop’, where you can learn and find some nifty techniques to gain more profit. PC Gamer also had something to say. They gave it a 7.50 out of 10, also saying that it’s, “...fun and mechanically sound, but not something you’re going to queue up hours for.”

Overall, it has a playscore of 8.33.

7. Do Not Feed The Monkeys

Concepts like these are the reason why we decided to limit these games ‘of the last three years’, otherwise, they’d be buried with the huge amount of Strategy games on the PC.

Do Not Feed The Monkeys is an interesting game where your only job is to watch strangers through surveillance cameras. The ‘monkeys’ aren’t real monkeys. These are human subjects you’re tasked to spy on. It’s up to you if you want to mess around or simply watch how their everyday lives go. Either way, your decisions will impact the game’s ending.

Game Reactor gave it an 8 out of 10. Claiming that, “It's one of those little gems that you have to try because it does things differently and exemplifies the diversity and creativity on display on the indie scene.”

For a game about voyeurism, it does so well that it doesn’t take itself seriously, although it had its fair share of social commentary that speaks a lot about our society. But most of all, you’re basically watching people do stupid things. It has a playscore of an 8.38.

6. Frostpunk

From the team that gave us that emotionally wrecking survival game, This War of Mine, they have another title that will give us an even bigger responsibility for the future of the human race.

Frostpunk is a beautiful city-building game with a depressing story about a sunless Earth. In short, everything is FREEZING COLD. You are an Overseer tasked to lead these survivors into a new tomorrow. Battle frostbites and hypothermia by building massive steam-powered machines capable of bringing heat and warmth to your people.

Hardcore Gamer gave it an 8 out of 10, saying that, “Hours will go by as you are consumed into the doom-and-gloom of your city while trying to make sure people don’t die.“ Its chilling morality lets you pick sides depending on which Laws you sign. You could assert your dominance under a disciplinary system, or bring hope to people through religious means.

There are multiple ways to save your people, and that’s where Frostpunk shines.
Even GameSpot gave this a 9 out of 10. Praising the game’s unique survival elements. Saying that, “Frostpunk is among the best overall takes on the survival city builder to date.“

Winter has come and Climate Change is real guys. The game receives a playscore of an 8.52

5. Two Point Hospital

Apart from building roller coasters, Simulations are also saving lives through medical breakthroughs… and a whole lot of silliness. SEGA’s Two Point Hospital is a hospital building game where you construct the most efficient medical facility and cure those who fall ill from unusual diseases. However, the game is not as normal as you think it’d be. Although it deals with illnesses, the patients you meet aren’t exactly part of the status quo. There are aliens to probe, mummies to heal and even robots to fix.

Rachel Weber from Games Radar applauded the game’s design, giving it a perfect 10. Saying that, “... it's taken the funny bones and beating hearts of the original and transplanted them into an entirely new mini-universe of glee and medical mischief.”

Like most modern games, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Any moment you’ll be dealing with a massive horde of the undead, or a swarm of extraterrestrial freaks. Aside from maybe its functionality issues, Two Point Hospital is a wellspring of comedy that might tickle your funny bones. It has a playscore of 8.54.

4. Oxygen Not Included

The makers of Don’t Starve are back with another fantastic title that tests your wits, skills, and patience. This sci-fi simulation game takes you to the harsh reaches of space where you survive and make do with your limited resources. Everything you do in this space colony is under your control. As the overseer, make sure everything is in check because just when you thought you had it all figured out, the game continues to troll you in the most unexpected ways possible.

UK Reviewer Metro gave it an 8 out 10. Praising the game’s design. Cites that Oxygen Not Included is a “Funny, clever, and extremely complex mix of management simulator and survival game that manages to make abject failure almost as entertaining as success.”

There are numerous solutions to handle each problem and this game isn’t all too considerate of your numerous responsibilities. It continues to mess you up no matter the costs, and that’s the major challenge (and one of the best features) of this title. It has a playscore of an 8.64.

3. Hypnospace Outlaw

If Vaporwave was a videogame, then this is it. Dive into virtual cyberspace where the law is at its most vulnerable. Hypnospace Outlaw is a trippy internet simulator where you take the role of a Hypnospace Enforcer.

As badass as it sounds, your job is to hunt down web wrongdoers. Watch out for illegal activities including malware spreading, copyright infringement and even mysterious conspiracies that might shake society. On the surface, it looks like a nostalgic trip to the old days of the internet, but its detective elements make the game worth your time.

PC Gamer gave it an 8.10, impressed by the game’s puzzle elements, saying that, “It respects you enough to let you figure things out at your own pace, and with almost no hand-holding.”

Zoomers might not be able to grasp the complexities of this internet age, but the generations before will surely find a sanctuary of the best (and worst) things of 1990s internet. It has a playscore of an 8.66.

2. Slime Rancher

Probably the most wholesome entry on this list. Slime Rancher is an adorable and straightforward adventure where you manage a ranch and raise cute extraterrestrial slimes. As a young Rancher who recently got access to this renowned property, you are tasked to get it up and running. There are a plethora of fun things to do that’s reminiscent to farm-simulator classics like Harvest Moon.

Instead of that 2D feel, this first-person simulator has a modern touch. You’re left to explore this sprawling world loaded with secrets and hidden treasures. CGMagazine’s Jed Whitaker gave it a perfect 10, saying that, “Slime Rancher is one of the cutest games out there.”Although the has a charming premise, some of the concerns stem from its repetitiveness. PC Gamer gave it a 6.50, criticizing the game’s gameplay, saying that, “A slight and repetitive but cute farming game, Slime Rancher doesn't quite reach the heights of its sub-genre.”

If you’re into this fantastic slime-ranching experience, there’s no stopping you. It’s the perfect stress-reliever after a looooong day. Slime Rancher receives a playscore of an 8.84.

1. RimWorld

After years in Early Access, it’s about time Ludeon Studios unleashes their sci-fi colony simulator where you create your own mesmerizing story and help these crash-landed survivors. Powered by an intelligent AI storyteller, every scenario is randomly generated, adding more depth to its survival elements. It feels like watching a different sci-fi story in each passing moment. Characters have different paths and the planet isn’t all too friendly with the human race.

Game Reactor’s Mike Holmes gave it a perfect 10. Praising the game’s allure, saying that, “It's the kind of game that you'll wake up thinking about, that you'll sink untold hours into, that'll run in the background while life goes on all around you.” And he’s not lying, most players on Steam racked up 200 hours and even more of their game time. But hey, like most games, RimWorld isn’t close to perfect.

PC Gamer’s Sam Greer had something to say about the game’s design, although its AI-generated story is interesting, he iterated that, “...you can't help but begin to see the gears and cogs in the machine.” Amidst all that, RimWorld is a realistic take on the sci-fi space sim genre with a playscore of an 8.90.

Already a beloved title on the PC and consoles (PS4, Switch, and Xbox One), Thoroughline Games' hit adventure breaches the mobile with this iOS release. If you're one of the many fans of Studio Ghibli's enchanting films, Forgotten Anne might just be a perfect fit for you.

Steeped in the wonders of magic realism, the game tells tales of a world where objects take sentience. Seeing it through the eyes of Anne, we get to decode the strange phenomena as she herself takes on her journey home. On top of their Spirited Away-like atmosphere, what makes Forgotten Anne stand out is their uniquely engaging platform puzzles as well as the charm of their well-written narrative.

A bit of bad news: the game is only free to start and you'll have to shell out some money to see how it through. Still, its free chapter has enough touching moments to show you exactly what you're in for. It has a playscore of 8.74.

5. Bombastic Brothers – Top Squad

Now for a taste of the old Contra days. The run and gun shooter has made its way back and it looks better than ever. Bombastic Brothers commits to the modern age with its cartoon visuals, peppered with satisfying explosions that will fill anybody's desire for destruction.

It doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel, but it reintroduces a missed genre with a host of improvements in graphics and game modes. There's plenty of variety in the Bombastic Brother's gunfights. Take on their thrilling campaign and its many mission types, master the art of shooting in their endless modes, or show everyone who's boss in the Global PvP battles.

All that against their roster of characters, the artillery of guns, and tons and tons of loot. It has a playscore of 8.75.

4. BTS WORLD

Now a global sensation, the Bangtan Boys, or BTS as they're popularly known, has taken over the mobile too.

BTS World is their official game and it mixes different methods to tell the story of each of the nine members and their relationship with each other. Go through visual novel narratives, short films, video calls, and even texts. It lets you get to know each of their lovable members and makes you feel that much closer to them.

BTS World also lets you dress up the members as you please. Go through their wardrobes and switch up their hairstyles into your whichever is your ultimate BTS phase. It's a charming look at each character and it's got enough content to fulfill even those who aren't part of the massive BTS Army. It has a playscore of 8.9.

3. Sky: Children of the Light

We've probably all heard of Journey, that indie game that still ranks 6th in the PlayStation 4 top charts after almost 4 years. Well, the makers of that game have gone on to create equally amazing games, and their latest happens to be another atmospheric adventure. It is perhaps one of the most breathtaking mobile games so far and it's something you can experience alone, or with the aid of your friends.

Sky puts on a pretty minimalist art style. But with it, Sky manages to do so much thanks to the backing of its vast explorable lands and powerful soundtracks. Uncover the mysteries of the land, evolve along with it, and prepare to take flight.

If you want to support the developers, you can do so by getting the game's Season Pass. If not, Sky is just as beautiful--or more so--as a completely free to play experience with a playscore of 8.91.

2. Chess Rush

We are in the advent of auto battlers and this year, Chess Rush manages to beat out even their more original competition. For the uninitiated, auto chess focuses on strategy and battle preparation where you, the player, have no direct control over what happens mid fight.

All you have to do is choose from a pool randomly generated units and managing them to the best of your abilities. Putting rush into the auto chess formula, it's definitely the more fast-paced and fun alternative.

The battles are tough, fair, and fairly short--so much so that their 10 minutes or less formula is one of their biggest selling points. For beginners to the Autochess world, Chess Rush might just be the best place to start thanks to its casual yet rewarding gameplay. It has a playscore of 8.92.

1. ANOTHER EDEN

The mobile hemisphere finds itself in possession of one of its most powerful crossovers. In Another Eden, some of the best minds of the JRPG generations came together to bring about a title that everyone can enjoy. Play as one of their brave heroes and journey through time and space to save the future form the darkness.

It's a pretty typical JRPG tale as far anyone's concerned, but it was written by Masato Kato who earned his reputation for writing the script to Chrono Trigger. Him, along with the musical talents Yasunori Mitsuda and Shunsuke Tsuchiya, make for an RPG title you can't miss.

As a free-to-play game, it's unfortunately injected with gacha elements that might take away from an otherwise fun, premium experience. It has a playscore of 8.95.

"..will they feel good about their purchase? Will they see how much care we’ve put into what we’ve given them? Will they understand what we’ve tried to show them? Today, it’s so easy to be cynical about the industry and the motivations of developers. Most of the cynicism is, in my opinion, an easy cop-out, and deeply unfair. Most developers are in it for the love of the craft. For us, the motivation is simple — to create work of lasting meaning. We hope our work speaks for us."

The Long Dark Will Get Longer With An Official Third Episode Release Date

Greedfall, the action RPG set in a fantasy-filled 17th century, has been showing up on our upcoming lists for a while now but we didn't really expect much of Spiders' latest venture. As far their trailers were concerned, there were glaring unsynchronized moments and all in all, their graphics looked a little dated.

With some reviews already out on the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, we'll take a look at what critics and gamers had to say about the game.

Ultimately, how the world itself becomes the focal point of Greedfall’s narrative - in a way we rarely see - leads to a truly stunning finale full of heart, optimism, criticism, tragedy, and warmth. An RPG to savour, Greedfall’s tale verges on the profound.

GreedFall is a very pleasant surprise and developers of Spiders dudes. After a few lukewarm attempts, they have created a truly great RPG that will appeal to most fans of the genre, even if they find those who don't like it. GreedFall, while offering the traditional components of traditional role-playing games, does it artfully and adds something of its own, which sets it apart from the competition. The story and dialogues, which are rich and engaging, without empty phrases, are also successful. The game has enough depth, although some activities are simplified. For example, opening locked chests is just a formality and you steal items without being charged with theft. Certainly you will find some parts that could be added and improved, but the resulting effect is very good and you can not just break away from the game. I really enjoyed a 45-hour trip to the finals, during which I did most of the optional tasks. And I believe it's not just one of my most intense gaming experiences this year.

I enjoyed myself just about every step of the way through GreedFall’s epic, morally complex tale of exploration and swashbuckling. The Technomancer was disappointing, but I still wanted to see other games try the ambitious things it was attempting with more success - and GreedFall delivers on that promise. There are still glitches, awkward character models, immersion-breaking re-use of assets, and a general bugginess that keep it from being unambiguously excellent, but I have a feeling this is going to be a crowd-pleaser.

GreedFall is a coherent work that does not hesitate to reserve some surprises in the narrative plot, with an irreproachable writing of events and characters. It is a pity only for some stumbling blocks in the interface and in the combat system, which never really manages to shine simply by the simple homework, and for an excessive length of the final beats of the adventure. The charm of the setting, impeccably exploited, is the proverbial icing on the cake. In short, GreedFall represents the pinnacle of Spider productions so far, but there is still plenty of room to improve.

I feel like it's an easy game to criticize for lots of reasons that I wouldn't disagree with -- but I was thoroughly impressed with the handling of the setting, the tone of the narrative, the character interactions and how those meshed with the underlying systems and mechanics, that I simply found myself uninterested in clinging on too strongly to a list of imperfections. From a gameplay standpoint, players will not get anything out of this game that they can’t get in a more polished state in the Dragon Age series or The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, making GreedFall a slog to get through.
Greedfall is mostly a title that is worth a look, with efficient and consistent mechanics. The writing is interesting, the fights successful, and the universe regularly renews the interest of the player for the exploration and the resolution of the quests. So Spiders seems to have found the right formula and the right balance, which is very encouraging for the future.

But ultimately, because Greedfall is so cavalier about its colonialist themes, and because it plays it safe by sticking so closely to the template of open-world RPGs, it doesn't really feel revelatory in any way. Instead, it's content to be just another digital playground--just another world filled with magic, riches, secrets, and monsters for players to shoot and loot at will. I did have fun when I got lost in its familiar RPG loop, but its lack of nuance or innovation prevents it from being truly remarkable.

There's really not much a consensus among the ratings Greedfall received from both gamers and critics. For some, it might just be Spiders' best attempt the RPG genre yet. For others, it stops short of greatness by playing too safe in more than a few corners.

Greedfall's highest PlayScore of 7.92 comes from the PlayStation 4, followed by a PlayScore of 7.87 on the Xbox One, and lastly a 7.53 on the PC.

Spiders released their 17th Century action RPG recently and we take a look at what the critics had to say about the game.

GreedFall: What Do The Critics Think?

To see the full and up-to-date list, visit our ranking of the best survival games on the PS4.

10. Don't Starve: Mega Pack

We're starting this on light yet silent note with the definitive package of Klei Entertainment's gothic open-world survival. Even before the added DLCs and multiplayer capabilities, there was already a lot to love about this game.

First and foremost, the atmosphere provided by their instrument-based sounds and German Expressionism inspired aesthetic. But it doesn't just look good. It plays well too.

Spazio I-talia may have just given it a decent score of 7.5, it was mostly because of what they felt was an overload of content and more importantly, a bad Italian localization. On the other hand, still in Italy, IGN's Franceso Destri gave it an 8.70, pointing out just how addictive the survival elements are together with the suspense that their roguelike format offers.

Don't Starve has proved itself as a worthy survival title and with this definitive package, it provides the ultimate experience with a playscore of 8.49.

9. Darkwood

Believe it or not, this is developer Acid Wizard Studio's first videogame. Their five years of hard work has clearly paid off. Step into mid 80s Poland and make it through the nights in a top-down perspective.

As a survival horror title, Darkwood's primary sell has always been its total lack of jumpscares. That might sound boring, but that's what makes the game so special: it delivers spine-tingling terrors even without it. But that's not to say there weren't any criticisms either. Game Rant gave the game a 7.00. While they admit that its weird characters and unnerving moments add up to a twisted experience, they also say that "ultra-tough gameplay is likely to turn quite a few people off and it can be tedious."

However, We Got This Covered also points out its appeal, "[turning] night into your greatest enemy and makes players question what could be lurking in the dark." If continuous tension is what you're into, Darkwood is a special fit with a playscore of 8.5.

8. Outlast

First released in 2014, Outlast was a sensation at the outset. It has a premise anchored on seeing through the halls of a psychiatric hospital using nothing but a camcorder's night vision. And, with that, it has seeped into the world of streamers and gifted the world with secondhand frights.

Just like Darkwood, this is also one of developer Red Barrel's first titles and its debut has granted us more terrors than expected. Outlast, as it forces you to manage batteries amidst the presence of unseen psychopaths, stays true to the heart of survival horror.

It's not quite a winner among critics with a score of 7.87. It garnered a decent 7 from Arcade Sushi who found that the game "relies too heavily on Hollywood tactics."

PS Lifestyle counters this with their rating of 9. The game, for them, doesn't rely on jump scares and is "truly shaped by the ambiance that it creates." While critics have differing opinions, Outlast has won over the other side with its gamer score of 9.23. All in all, it's a Top 10 winner with a playscore of 8.53.

7. Terraria

Engine Software's open world adventure gives us respite from the darkness. The first thing you notice about Terraria is graphics-wise, it's a little simple. It's a far cry from the full 3D world we've come to experience. But make no mistake, Terraria's 2D pixel art world is ripe for exploration. It has the same focus on crafting and building as Mojang's Minecraft.

However, it has plenty of quirks that readily sets it apart. In their review, GameSpew gave the game a score of 8/10.

They describe the game as essentially a survival, where you gather materials, find chests, make yourself stronger. But it has quirks like having to craft items to summon bosses, without any guidance whatsoever.

GameSpew ends their review citing "the very thing that makes the game awesome is also what makes it quite often frustrating. It’s a hard balance to strike, and Terraria almost nails it." As most of the games on the list, Terraria has more clearly won over Gamers. It has a total playscore of 8.57.

6. Until Dawn

If you've ever seen a horror movie, then you're definitely familiar with the frustration of watching characters make all the stupid decisions. Supermassive Games offers a solution to that with this survival horror.

Play as eight adults in Blackwood Mountain and make your choices for them in order to determine who lives or dies.

Over the years there's been a whole lot of debate about whether or not it's worthy of being called a game. Whatever it is, the users who rated it on the different stores seem to agree that it's quite an interactive experience. As of right now, its total gamer rating is 9.22.

The critics are a whole ‘nother story. On one hand, there's COGConnected who gave it a 9.10. They admit that while Until Dawn doesn't have complex gameplay, it counters it with compelling characters, visuals, and thought-provoking storylines.

Destructoid, giving it a decent 7.00, says that it "allows for some predictable plotlines, hammy acting, and lack of meaningful choices" but is "glad that it exists." Game or not, if it's a harrowing horror experience you want, Until Dawn provides with a total playscore of 8.59.

5. Minecraft: Playstation 4 Edition

Mojang's voxel based sandbox game brings us out of the darkness of survival horror and back to the handy world of crafting and building.

Minecraft may be known for a lot of things, like their adventure mode and most especially the imagination-unlocking creative mode. But, their entry to this list is credited to their survival game mode where players are required to collect, build, and battle in order to thrive in the voxel environment.

It's often been compared to Klei Entertainment's Don't Starve. Rating the game with an 8, Push Square goes on to say its survival mechanics are casual compared to the gothic survival game, but there's plenty of depth on display and it's taught fairly well in their tutorial.

For IGN, who rated the game with a 9.70, there's a lot of work in chipping and collected everything by hand but "what initially feels like a tedious task becomes the basis for Minecraft's rewarding core."

Judging from just one of the game's many offerings, the PlayStation 4's Minecraft edition is an overall success with a playscore of 8.74.

4. Subnautica

While Minecraft gets the ticket for just one of its game modes, Unknown Worlds' Subnautica makes surviving the ruthless oceans your whole life. It's a survival game set in the breathtaking open world oceans of a whole new world.

Sure, there are untold treasures, and wonder-filled caverns but there's also catastrophes and horrific creatures. Striking that delicate balance, Subnautica received a lots of 8s and 9s from critic reviewers.

Gaming Bolt calls it "one of the better and relatively unique takes on the open world survival genre." Gaming Bolt went on to praise the game's deep mechanics as it challenged palyers to balance thirst, hunger, health, oxygen, and more, while giving you the freedom to explore the corners of its vast underseas.

PS Lifestyle may have cited a few of the game's technical limitations, but ultimately he was blown away. "What initially appeared to be a knee-high kiddie pool worth of depth, suddenly gives way to a literal ocean of gameplay opportunities." It has a playscore of 8.77.

3. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

CAPCOM's latest installment to their iconic horror series is injected with all sorts of new ideas. What with the poor reception of their 6th main installment, Biohazard starts us all off with a shift towards a whole a new perspective.

In it, you'll get to know the Baker family in first-person. That, topped with the added thrills of their virtual reality support, makes it one of the scary ride. TechRaptor was all praises about it too, even so far as calling it "the best use of VR they've seen in gaming yet."

Despite the strides it has achieved, comparisons stil play a large part in judging the game, and the series as whole. That's most evident in Gaming Bolt’s review, giving Biohazard a 9 saying "Capcom may possibly never top the experience provided by the first four games...but they have come really very close."

Resident Evil 7 shows promise for the future of the series, and it has a playscore of 8.86.

2. Resident Evil 2

From the promising present, we come right back to CAPCOM's illustrious past. This is one of the series' finest and it has crawled its way out of their old gen graveyards and out into the shiny new world of the PlayStation 4. Return to the shoes of Claire and Leon as they look polished from head to toe, and ready to take on action-packed resource management they were known for.

Unlike other remakes, though, CAPCOM goes the extra mile by adding a slew of additions to freshen up a beloved title.

Dual Shockers agree. Remakes aren't new, but CAPCOM's ability "to change so many facets of Resident Evil 2 while keeping the core of the game intact is one of the most impressive accomplishments." They're right. Not only is there new gameplay additions, it also elevates the story from the usual campiness with the new Second Scenario.

It's an essential exprience for any Resident Evil fan, and it gets a playscore of 9.28.

1. The Last Of Us Remastered

First released on the PS3 in 2013, Joel and Ellie's misadventures remains at the top of the list on the last-gen console.

With this remaster on the PlayStation 4, The Last of Us has more or less fallen off of the top ranks. But, in this list of survival games, it's no doubt a runaway winner.

There's so many things to love about the game--from its engaging storytelling, and adrenaline-packed action, to its tug-at-your-heartstrings emotionality. All this is enhanced with their move to the more powerful PlayStation 4. In fact, most critic reviews for this remastered version have focused on the improvements brought about by the move. But, as a survival horror, USGamer said it best when they said it embodied the concept of genre most effectively saying, "Nothing about the game is in any way new or surprising, but it's all executed to near perfection..."

The Last of Us Remastered isn't new, but it has remained in our hearts through the years because it delivers precisely what it set out to do. It has a playscore of 9.4.

One of the breakout hits of the last generation has made its return on the Nintendo Switch. Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns is an updated version of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords which first released on the DS and the PlayStation Portable in 2007.

It garnered numerous praise for combining the usual match-three puzzle gaming with role-playing elements, this creating an awesome new experience for fans of the two differing genres.

Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns jumps into the latest generation not just with fancy new visuals but also the addition of the quest line Attack of the Golem Lord.

Having just released a few hours ago, the reviews from various critic sources are starting to roll-in. Here's a rundown of their verdicts so far:

Nintendo World Report 8.00/10

There is certainly a lot to love about Puzzle Quest’s remastered return on Switch. The RPG-meets-puzzle battle system is just as deep and memorable, but almost everything else feels like something straight out of 2007. On the whole, that’s fine, but I can’t help but be dismayed by the bland visuals and presentation. But even failing that, you can just pick one of the 13 classes and romp your way through excellent and distinct battles. Purely based on its battle mechanics, Puzzle Quest is excellent, but it’s held back by the forgettable flourishes.

With just three reviews so far, it looks like Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns is off to a good start. More updates will follow.

Critcs Weigh-in On New Puzzle Quest Game Out On Switch Now

To see the full list, visit our ranking of the best Xbox One racing games ever released.

10. Redout: Lightspeed Edition

For racing games, speed and sights are the name of the game. Thankfully, you'll get both in this fast-paced and futuristic racer from developer 34BigThings.

What veteran racing fans might notice is the game's obvious inspiration from classics WipeOut and F-Zero. And, that's mainly where Redout succeeds: not just bringing back the thrills of gravity-defying racing but split-screen multiplayer too. Getting mostly 7's and 8s though, Redout clearly isn't perfect. The game received its lowest score of 6.50 from french game review site JeuxActu. They described it as a success in terms of content and controls.

However, it stopped short of becoming a worthy wipeout successor because of its not-so challenging AI, lackluster graphics, and frame-rate issues, among others. These frame-rate issues were echoed by ZTGD. But, despite that, and not being too innovative, Redout for them remained a slick and beautiful racer.

It has a playscore of 7.73.

9. DiRT Rally 2.0

Codemasters is back with the second installment of their critically acclaimed rally racer. Their first game was quite a hurdle to surpass, but it looks like they did the job.

Being the official FIA World Championship game, Dirt Rally 2.0 lets you ride across official tracks in six different, real-like locations. As usual, it was a hit among critics who appreciated the brutal difficulty that it offers.

AusGamers called it a hardcore rally simulator. Although it might not appeal to all racing fans, its car handling, physics and visuals contribute to an overall positive experience. Game Grin, on the other hand, considered it the Dirt 4 successor we never had, giving a score of 9/10 despite having to pay for "new" old tracks.

Maybe this is the reason why Dirt Rally 2.0 got significantly lower user ratings--something that’s emerging as a pattern in the Dirt Rally series. All in all, it receives a more than decent playscore of 7.76.

8. Wreckfest

THQ Nordic's demolition derby game is a total feast for your combo cravings of racing and destruction. This isn't the first of its kind by any standards.

There's been Twisted Metal, and the more recent FlatOut series which is Wreckfest's proud spiritual predecessor. Powered by sophisticated driving dynamics and realistic physics, it’s the ultimate vehicular carnage experience. But, in a market saturated with racing simulations, Wreckfest's dedication to the absurd also stands out.

That's exactly what GameSpew points out in their recent review. It's an oddity that sticks out like a sore thumb and delivers an aggressively fun racing experience too.

There aren't any licenses here because you won't need them in an arena with absolutely zero rules. The only thing to do is to make it to the finish line, no matter what it takes. Let's listen to IGN and toss out our rulebooks and get down to some actual action with a playscore of 7.77.

7. DiRT 4

Sure, Dirt Rally 2.0 might be the sequel we never had to some people, but now that the jury is out, it looks like Dirt 4 remains as Codemaster's leading rally racer on the consoles.

It was also released after the Dirt Rally, and is considered the 12th entry in the Colin McCrae series. While it left out Rally in their title, Dirt 4 is considered by many as this generation's quintessential rally racer.

According to IGN, Codemaster's Dirt 4 is "Accessible yet tough and grimy yet gorgeous." Aside from hitting the racing simulation sweet spot of tough but enjoyable, Dirt 4's game modes have also been praised. Perhaps a little too detailed for some like ZTGD's Ken Mckown, Dirt 4's career mode, in particular, earned cheers from critics and gamers for the freedom it provides.

Just like Codemasters' other games though, it has also earned mostly decent scores from users despite being critically acclaimed.

It has a playscore of 7.85

6. Skylanders: SuperChargers

To real-life cars turned digital, we take a detour towards real-life toys. Famous for breathing new life into their plastic toys, Skylanders explores the joys of vehicular action in their fifth installment. Make your return to the ever endangered Skylands and protect it once again from the perils of Kaos' evil plans.

As far as critic reviews are concerned, Superchargers seems to have the most polarized, with some as low as 6s to as high as 8.90.

For COGConnected, the franchise takes a giant leap with Superchargers. Its showered with innovations in terms of new characters, vehicles, and a massive 52-chapter campaign. On the other end of the spectrum, there's Pure Xbox with this gem. At least it had some success on the user's side, garnering a 9.20 from users on the Amazon website.

Whatever your take on the toy-to-life phenomenon, Vicarious Visions' Skylanders Superchargers has earned its place on the list with a total playscore of 7.91.

5. Cars 3: Driven to Win

What began as a simple tie-in to the Cars third movie title, has taken on a life of its own and earned the respect of gamers on the Xbox One. It's set immediately after the events of the film and expands on the rivalry between Lightning McQueen and his smooth-talking rival, Cruz Ramirez. For this title in our list, the divide between critic and gamer ratings is made even clearer.

With a total critic rating of 7.08, the consensus seems to be that Avalanche Software's Cars 3 is "not a bad game."

That it offers decent family-friendly entertainment, thanks to its decidedly quirky source material and its co-op multiplayer.

Some like COGconnected wished it would've stuck to the atmosphere of the film, while Game Reactor hoped it stretched the scope to whole franchise.

On the other hand, with user ratings of 8s and 9s, the audience definitely wasn't complaining and it gets a total playscore of 7.93.

4. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled

Well if you guys wanted a cross between quirky yet complex, you can't go wrong with this remake of Crash Bandicoot's racing spinoff.

Obviously inspired by Nintendo's Mario Kart series, Crash Team racing definitely carved its own name in the genre, to the point of becoming second to, if not THE king of Kart racing.

It first appeared on the PlayStation 1 in the hands of Naughty Dog Studios. With this remake, Beenox proves they're the right fit for the makeover.

ZTGD weighs in again, praising the game's technical flourishes that make it feel like a brand new title. Game Skinny also gave the game a score of 8, pointing out how it builds upon the features of the classic. However, it also passes on some of its kinks to the newer gen which may mean a steeper learning curve.

On the user side, Crash Team Racing received an outstandingly low score from GameFaqs which contributed to its less than stellar performance. It has a playscore of 7.98.

3. F1 2016

In a list packed with the latest racing titles, F1 2016 is the sole outlier. Released in the wake of a seemingly rushed F1 2015, Codemaster's next installment turned out to be their return to form.

It's filled with landmark new features, important updates on online lobbies, and the awaited return of their single-player career mode.

It was perhaps this impression of newness that allowed it to surpass the series' later titles that only built upon what 2016 provided. Looking at the critic reviews of later titles, F1 2016 received the lower end of the stick with most ratings ranging from 8s to 8.5s. But, it won by a landslide with its users, receiving a whopping 9 from Microsoft from reviewers.

In its time, it was a treasure trove of formula one immersion. 2016 may have been a long time ago, but this game remains close to racers hearts with a playscore of 8.36.

2. Forza Motorsport 7

When it comes to racing games on the Microsoft console, you can't forget the Forza series. With every new installment, Turn 10 Studios offers a jaw-dropping racing experience.

Motorsport 7 combines their talents with the breathtaking sights that only 4K and HDR support can give. But other than the surface level excitement that is their graphical ingenuity, this latest installment in the subseries is as much a technical marvel. Polygon says the same.

Surely enough for Motorsport 7, content is key. Its palette of different cars, numbers to up 700, each seemingly more drool-worthy when driven along with its generous selection of over 30 tracks.

Even judged before the arrival of features like events, leagues, and auction houses, the game was already packed to the brim with the delicious essentials of online matches, campaign modes and all the tools to customize your growing collection. If Games Radar is to be believed, it's THE serious racing game on the current-gen, and it has a playscore of 9.06.

1. Forza Horizon 4

Sure, we've had Motorsport 7, but Microsoft still tops this racing list with their finest Forza title yet. Between the two subseries, Horizons is Forza at its most versatile. It provides racing enthusiasts with a haven for arcade enjoyment and the simple joys of driving in its vast open-world environment of a fictionalized Great Britain.

It might not be a massive leap from the beauty that was Forza Horizon 3, what sets this game is the freedom that lies at the heart of it.

That was definitely true for Game Revolution who gave the game a 9 out of 10. He also added that with Horizon 4's broad appeal and variety is what won over the general audience.

Game Informer agrees. "Depending on your focus of play, you can turn it into a difficult game of precision that requires proper vehicle tuning, or a light arcade experience of tearing across Great Britain with no cares in the world." A general yet genuine racing experience, it has a playscore of 9.24.
