It receives a playscore of an 8.54

9. Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom

We’ve been talking about this game from developer Game Atelier in every Indie or Platformer video we have and that's because Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom never fails to deliver. This spiritual successor to the iconic Metroidvania classic, Wonder Boy, is a fantastic game that reimagines the old adventure into brand new heights.

Help Monster Boy “Jin” overcome his fears and explore a magical world full of secrets and deadly monsters. Transform into six various forms with unique abilities to traverse around its cursed lands. Each of the six forms will help you achieve numerous goals depending on your playstyle. For example, the Pig form grants you the ability to find secrets and hidden pathways due to its sensitive snout; and the Snake can stick through walls and corners, making traversal easier. Once you’ve gotten the hang of the numerous forms, the game tests you to combine their mechanics and solve a myriad of puzzles.

Video Chums gave it a 9.1, saying that, “ The amount of challenging fun packed into its massive and enjoyable world makes every moment of gameplay an absolute joy.” There’s no debate here, the game receives a playscore of an 8.58

8. SteamWorld Dig 2

A sequel to the classic platformer game heavily influenced by classic Metroidvania titles. Dig 2 not only improves as a sequel, but it also brings more fun and complexity in its exploration and combat. On paper, the game is simple. Your mission is to dig. But it’s even deeper than that, pun intended. Navigate around the tricky dungeons of this underground world and collect numerous materials to upgrade your equipment. The deeper you go, the more dangerous it becomes. This is where your handy puzzle-solving abilities and upgrades come in. Combine a few tricks and plan ahead as you plow your way ahead.

Image and Form's SteamWorld Dig 2 appreciates exploration than ever before. Reviewer Handsome Phantom even gave it a 9.0, praising the game’s seamless blend of combat, adventure, and puzzles. Saying that, “Its unique mechanics and innovative gameplay is a treat you don’t want to miss.” Alongside its beautiful hand-drawn art style, Dig 2 really excels as a Metroidvania and RPG, giving you the freedom to dig deeper into the abyss and unlock secrets along the way.

It receives a playscore of 8.68.

7. Rogue Legacy

An unlikely Metroidvania where you control a lineage of Knights vying to reach the top of an ever-changing castle. Cellar Door's Rogue Legacy is a platformer that imbues a crazy element to its gameplay loop: Every time you die, your offspring replaces your adventure. Not only you’ll be placed in different shoes, but its humorous ‘genetics’ system also gives your new character a different trait that might be an advantage or disadvantage to your quest.

You might be suffering from colorblindness, making your whole world black and white. Or ADHD, transforming your Knight into a warrior with blistering speed. This is where the charm of this game comes in. Each death gives you a completely new experience. Polygon gave this game a 9 out of 10. Saying that, “Rogue Legacy's visual playfulness and willingness to tweak the gameplay with these traits builds a wonderful sense of discovery.”

In retrospect, this game came earlier than Dead Cells. So it’s no secret Motion Twin might’ve borrowed a few of their mechanics here. It receives a playscore of an 8.76.

6. Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition

Gear up that spandex in this definitive edition of Drinkbox’s award-winning Metroidvania game. Take on the shoes of the brave Luchador “Juan” once again as you go on a quest to rescue the Mayor’s daughter from the Mexican Land of the Dead. Super Turbo Championship Edition has the same feel to its original, but with additional levels to spice things up.

COG Connected’s Scott Sullivan gave it a 9.0, citing that, “It packs in what everyone loved about the original while building on it enough to make it well worth tagging into the ring once again.” Like many of its Metroidvania inspirations, Guacamalee!’s combat runs from a simple brawler into a thrilling platformer that requires skill and timing. By destroying Religious statues, gain powerful Luchador abilities that will help you in battle and unlock blocked paths. It’s simple, but Drinkbox Studios’ knows how to add flavor to its already engaging presentation.

Coupled with a vibrant art style combined with upbeat Mexican tunes, this Edition is worth picking up if you’re a huge fan of challenging and fun Metroidvania. A playscore of 8.77.

5. Axiom Verge

Just like most Metroidvania titles, Tom Happ's Axiom Verge offers a satisfying progression system that seamlessly weaves into its strange world. As a scientist trapped into this mystifying dimension, use everything at your disposal to escape from this futuristic hellhole. Just like Super Metroid, navigate around its dangerous dimension by unlocking abilities and weapons along the way. Each weapon offers an advantage to every situation, like opening new paths, finding secrets, or giving the puzzle elements a time to shine.

With its responsive controls, traversing around its world is easy, but taking down bosses proves challenging as you skillfully use your arsenal to gain the upper hand. ZTGD gave this a 9 out of 10. Saying, “It is an excellent callback to classic titles, while also bringing its own flair and making a stamp on the genre."

It’s another good example of games borrowing Retro elements while adding their own modern touch. Axiom Verge does so well balancing two generations of gaming together into one fantastic Metroidvania game. It has a playscore of 8.78.

4. Salt & Sanctuary

Many have called this a ‘Souls-like’ game with Metroidvania elements. They’re not wrong, Salt & Sanctuary is a challenging adventure that punishes you if you don’t know what you’re doing. Although it’s evident there are numerous mechanics that they outright borrow from Dark Souls here, Ska Studios’ 2D version of Dark Souls is a fantastic title that stands on its own.

Polygon gave this a 9 out of 10. Saying that, it’s “...a stellar adventure with enough moments of surprise and excitement to rival even its own source material.” Explore this Gothic world and face off against monsters varying in shapes and sizes. The gameplay is a brutal hack and slash that feels like DMC. Connect light and heavy attacks or launch enemies into the air to deliver some snazzy mid-air combos.

Equipping weapons is as important as constantly watching your HP Bar. Each weapon offers an advantage to different enemies and even bosses. The Spear gives you an extended range for that safe pokes, or the Sword can deliver a flurry of fast attacks to slow enemies.

It has a playscore of an 8.78

3. Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition

If Salt & Sanctuary feels like a 2D Dark Souls, then Team Cherry's Hollow Knight might be the Dark Souls of Metroidvanias. Mixing brutal combat, fantastic boss fights and a dark world full of hidden lore, follow the story of a young Knight trying to understand the meaning of its lost kingdom. Enter into a bug-infested world where every portion of the map feels different. As a brave Knight with a little sword, embark on a grand adventure to uncover the mystery of the Hollow Knight.

Push Square gave it a 9 out of 10, saying that, “...the game delivers a sensational, mysterious journey which will undoubtedly test your platforming skills.” Just like Metroid and Castlevania, you explore a labyrinthian world where every monster is determined to kill you. Unlock powerful abilities and use them to traverse around its hostile environments with ease.

Voidheart Edition comes with all the DLC’s packed into one definitive version of the game. Story and combat remain unchanged, but it's certainly full of content. It receives a playscore of 8.84.

2. Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night

Castlevania veteran Koji Igarashi returns and breathes new life into the Bloodstained universe together with game developer studio Inti Creates. Complete with new lore and characters, follow the cursed life of Miriam as she makes her way into an evil castle filled with paranormal voices. Just like Symphony of the Night, your abilities prove useful with the game’s Metroidvania elements. With your demon powers, unleash a hellish blaze of power through your enemies. Even newfound abilities can be used as traversal elements to unlock new paths or find secrets, which gives exploration a deeper focus.

There are numerous ways to customize Miriam, all depending on your playstyle. Switch from Melee combat or Ranged as the game offers enough weapons and abilities to keep it fresh. IGN gave it an 8.5, saying that. “There is no shortage of good Metroidvanias these days, but Bloodstained does show that Koji Igarashi’s particular brand of “Igavania” still has teeth.”

It has a playscore of an 8.91.

1. Dead Cells

Stylish? Check. Challenging? Check. Good replay value with strong Metroidvania elements? Also, check. Dead Cells is Motion Twin’s latest opus as they take a dip into the realm of roguelike platformers with a deeply satisfying progression mechanic and punishing combat.

IGN gave it a 9.5 out of 10. Praising the game’s gameplay loop, saying that, “Dead Cells is rewarding in its flexibility in a way few games are.” As many of you are aware, in Dead Cells, you don’t just die, you respawn into an even powerful warrior with enough knowledge and upgrades to take down that one enemy that killed you in that dungeon.

Its procedurally-generated world is bereft of secrets, making exploration necessary instead of just hacking and slashing your way through. Earn fancy blueprints and upgrades that help you on your adventure as it permanently becomes part of your progression. This makes each death rewarding than the last.

Never be game over. This game deserves its playscore of 8.93.

Inspired by the classic game Metroid, these are the best new reincarnations of the genre with different takes.

10 Best Metroidvania Games on PlayStation 4

Looking forward to JRPGs releasing next year? Here's a complete list of the biggest Japanese roleplaying video games coming soon this 2020.

15 Upcoming Japanese RPGs of 2020

To see the complete list, visit our ranking of the best point-and-click Android games.

10. Beat Cop

11bit Studios already has quite the repertoire with titles like This War of Mine and the more recent Frostpunk. This new point and click adventure kind of follows the same formula. Beat Cop plays with equally difficult themes, revolving around the story of a disgraced cop on his way to redemption.

Play as Jack Kelly and experience his living hell as a suspected murderer with an annoying boss and a horrible domestic life. Despite the darkness of its themes, Beat Cop has a nice, living world to immerse in. Its environments seem meticulously detailed, from its clean HUD to the streets themselves, lined with moving cars and interesting passersby.

With all that, Beat Cop is still a free game and as such, it doesn't quite close in on the immersion because of its lack of voice acting. Still, it's Jack Kelly's life is a life worth seeing though, with a score of 8.14.

9. The Frostrune

Grimnir Media's adventure takes us far away from the brutal reality of Beat Cop. Instead, we're taken to the mysterious world of Viking mythology. Shipwrecked and marooned into an unknown island, you find yourself in an abandoned settled with only ancient runes and burial mounds for the company.

Frostrune depicts its world in 2D illustrations that capture quiet isolation, and also the burgeoning of something intensely magical. As a point and click adventure, it's a bit slow on the uptake. It might be a little lacking for some, but worth the patient investment for others.

It's a unique adventure that shows off its ingenuity with its puzzles, and also its creativity with its Old Norse dialogue that takes us fully to their realized spirit world. It has a playscore of 8.47.

8. Old School RuneScape

This might be the most different of all the games in this list, but it also happens to be one of the most well-known names in gaming. RuneScape is a hell of a lot different than it used to be, so developer Jagex provided fans with a much needed time capsule.

Old School Runescape is exactly the old school MMORPG you once loved, and now you can bring it along with you wherever you go. Face the dragons, sail the seas, and take down the monsters once more.

It's a great way for old fans to reconnect with their old 2007 selves. But, also, a great entry point for anyone who just wants a fun and accessible RPG they can play with friends. Combining point and click gameplay with the MMO formula, it has a playscore of 8.52.

7. The Silent Age

Your days as an ordinary janitor are up as you prepare for a different kind of cleanup in this mystery-filled point and click adventure. The Silent Age follows the more familiar formula for the genre. Take on the role of a janitor who finds a portal to the future and becomes the only hope for humanity's survival.

It's a sci-fi trope that's been made many times before but it homes in on the genre with an atmosphere built on stylistic visuals and eerie soundtracks. While that’s nice and good, what completes The Silent Age experience is still its engaging puzzles and compelling storyline.

The game has been out for a while, and there are two episodes for you to get lost in. With each one brimming with just the right amount of tension to make you want answers to the many questions it raises, it rightly deserves its playscore of 8.64.

6. Beholder

In our next game, virtue, not beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. Set within the confines of a totalitarian state, Beholder challenges you to toe the line between compassion and conformity. You own an apartment building and the State requires you to spy on your tenants. Bug their homes, search through their belongings and report any kind of suspicious activity to give violators their due punishment.

With such a dark setting, there's a lot of gray moral areas to balance out. Will you bow to the orders of government, blackmail your tenants in exchange for bailing them out, or becoming the light that the dark world needs. As a title that's heavy, dark, and depressing, it might not be everyone's cup of tea. With a playscore of 8.68, the choice is yours.

5. The House of da Vinci

Out of the darkness of the totalitarian state and into the light of the renaissance. In House of Da Vinci, it looks like the renowned renaissance man has disappeared and it's up to you find him.

What makes it all the more different from the last game is that it also sets you free from the restrictive 2D plane. You get to roam around 16th century Florence freely in the first-person perspective. Enter the house of your master, Da Vinci, and learn to think like him to solve all the mechanical puzzles that lie ahead of you.

Just like the period, it's also a journey of enlightenment, its scenes packed with riddles that feel unique and cleverly designed. While it might have some control quirks, it more than makes up for it, getting a score of 8.72.

4. Five Nights at Freddy's 2

Maybe they were right when they said Out of all the many Five Nights at Freddy's on the mobile, the second main installment has won over all the others by a tiny margin.

With this sequel, the old and dilapidated animatronics are out to haunt you once again. The series is built around players taking up the security guard duties and hopefully living to see the end of their shift. But this time, the Five Night stay has turned into 7.

Thankfully for horror fans everywhere, it doesn't always work out and you get to meet some of their beloved characters. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 successfully ramps up the tension. There are a lot more rooms to keep an eye on, and their infamous robot cast members have become a whole lot smarter.

It's a successful sequel, but it's just one of the franchise's many great hits, winning over the rest with a playscore of 8.73.

3. Botanicula

Sometimes what you're looking for in a point and click is just a little bit of relaxation. Botanicula is here to deliver. Other than their art style that evokes familiar images of quaint Sunday mornings, there's a lot more to love here.

Starring a hand of tiny tree creatures, Botanicula tells the story of five friends on a journey to rescue their home tree's last seed from evil parasites. It's an endearing tale, filled with quirky bug personalities that are set amid bright foliage that's a total breathtaking sight for sore eyes.

Swing from vine to vine, jump on starlike orbs, take shelter in homes, and ask a friend for raid help. Cute and endlessly charming no matter how much you play, its playscore of 8.74 is definitely well-deserved.

2. Gemini Rue

Invite yourself into the harrowing world of crime in this interactive graphic adventure from none other than Wadjet Eye Games.

These folks have always given us a masterclass in adventure games so it's no surprise that they presented us with this. Gemini Rue comes complete with the film noir atmosphere, immersing you in the dark world of intrigue, mystery, and science fiction. Just like Thimbleweed Park, it's a tale of two characters, except it's boiled into one. find out how their stories intertwine into a quest for galactic redemption.

It has a playscore of 8.76.

1. Thimbleweed Park

Well, you can't say it isn't expected. When you've already made titles like Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion, you're bound to make it to the top, especially if you're on the Android. Continuing on out of Lucas Arts, Thimbleweed Park is one of the latest to come out of the Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick partnership. Return to 1987 and dive into a neo-noir mystery that gives you more questions than answers.

The Maniac Mansion humor lives on as you guide their duo detectives through interviewing witnesses, finding clues, and uncovering the mystery of Thimbleweed Park. It might be presented in simple pixel visuals, but the immersion set at a record high thanks to its stellar voice casting.

One of the best point and clicks from the veteran point and click makers, it gets a playscore of 8.85.

Here's a synopsis of the game:

Powered by Unreal® Engine 4, Deliver Us The Moon is set in an apocalyptic near-future where the Earth’s resources have been depleted and humanity looks to the stars. Nations band together to create the World Space Agency - an organization tasked with solving the extreme energy crisis. The solution: colonization and exploitation of the moon’s natural reserves of Helium-3 to serve the energy needs of a growing Earth population. Suddenly, and without warning, communications with the Moon cease, and the energy source is lost. Plunged into darkness and without power, years pass as world governments come together once more to embark on a new mission - to re-establish the energy supply and with it hope for the human race.

Gameplay involves the player exploring the moon alongside a small robot named ASE. Together they uncover clues and find conspiracies involving the Earth’s corrupted state. Learn about the secrets from the former inhabitants of the Moon’s abandoned space stations.

It’s a genre-busting narrative adventure where players are not only confined in one place. Throughout the journey, solve a myriad of puzzles, survive hazardous environments and utilize the greatest technology mankind has to offer. It is atmospheric from the very beginning to the end.

A large number of comparable objects, versatile tools, and different paths make the player's agency an important pillar within hell that is Dark Devotion that encourages the constant experimentation of different ways of massacring enemies during your journey.
The narrative adventure genre might be a dying breed these days with the closure of Telltale Games, many like Pendulo Studios are ready to take on the mantle. Blacksad: Under is based on a Spanish comic book of the same name and both center around a cat detective, Blacksad, as he navigates the cutthroat world of 1950s New York.

Like many games, it's choice-based so the decision you make will affect your relationships with other characters as well as the direction of the story. Unlike most games, though, Blacksad forgoes the usual point and click which means you're gonna get your hands dirty in the detective work.

There really isn't much innovation going on here, but if Just Dance is your thing, you'll get to experience it on the consoles--including the Wii--this November 5th.

3. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

After being absent from last year's Olympics, SEGA and Nintendo are back at it again with another installment of their iconic sports party game. And, it's high time too because the Olympics are handing them the homecourt advantage. Play around with Sonic, Mario and their respective circles as you show off your skills in more than twenty different events.

Aside from the usual bunch, this Tokyo 2020 edition will also feature four new events. Get a kick out of Karate, ride the waves in surfing, play it cool in skateboarding, and make it to the top in Sport Climbing. Packed with new and old ways to get the heart pumping, it's coming out exclusively on the Switch on Nov 5th.

4. Death Stranding

Yup. It's finally happening. A game that's being touted as Kojima's next big masterpiece is coming next month and hopefully, we'll get all the answers to all our burning questions. Or not.

From what we know so far, you'll get to play the role of Sam Porter Bridges as he fights against the breakdown of society caused by some mysterious force. Aside from being decidedly cloaked in mystery, Death Stranding is also populated by a cast of well-known personalities like Mads Mikkelson, Guillermo del Toro, Lea Seydoux, and Norman Reedus in center stage.

Prepare to be awed and maybe confused once it releases exclusively on the PlayStation this Nov 8th.

5. Need for Speed Heat on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

The hitherto unnamed Need for Speed game gets its official title and that means it can officially become more heated. Heat is coming out in celebration of the franchise's 25th Anniversary so we can expect to have a lot more of their signature street racing.

As a new title, Need for Speed Heat is also determined to be fresh. Welcome to Palm City, and get ready to outrun cops with a bunch of new customizations and compete in a set of all-new events. It's an open-world extravaganza in which you dilly dally by day and get to race seriously by night. There's reputations, heat levels, and so much more and it's coming out PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 8th.

6. New Super Lucky's Tale

Microsoft's Lucky fox is stepping out of his comfort zone. It was first released on the Oculus Rift and later on the Xbox One X, and next month on the Nintendo Switch. Reduced slightly by a dimension, NEW Super Lucky's tale will be a complete reimagining of the game in more ways than one. Not only do you get to play it differently, but you also get to experience it anew thanks to an array of new cutscenes to watch.

It wasn't exactly well-received in the Microsoft consoles, so this jump to the Switch will hopefully earn them more hearts by way of their new controller-friendly format. It's coming out on Nov 8th, 2019.

7. Rune II

Human Head Studios' RPG went through a few name iterations until they finally settled with the simple straightforward Rune II. One thing's for sure though, a new title is finally coming out. And, yes, it's an Epic Games Store exclusive.

If that's annoying to some, their co-founder Chris Rhinehart has been quick on providing updates to soothe the fanbase. Their pre-alpha footage may have been a little underwhelming, their new trailers have been looking better. We're assuming with more time in the oven, it'll be up and ready to serve a dose of Ragnarok when it comes out on the PCs this November 12th.

8. Tokyo Ghoul:re Call to Exist on PC and PlayStation 4

Bandai Namco is rolling out hit after hit these days and hopefully this will be the next. In Re Call To Exist, the streets of Tokyo are on the verge of collapse as the war rages on between the ghouls and Investigators.

It's a survival action game you scour the streets of Tokyo for answers and put an end to the war. This installment will present new Ghouls, as well as an array of new battle mechanics. It’s gonna be the first Tokyo Ghoul to come out to the West and it marks the coming together of the iconic characters from the original game. It's set to release Nov 14th, 2019.

9. Pokémon Sword and Shield

This next Pokemon game feels like it started on the wrong foot with the fanbase. First, there was the news about not getting to complete the Pokedex and there were criticisms against their previews' less than impressive graphics. But, the developers of Sword and Shield have slowly won us over bit by bit through the months. The good news are abounding.

Not only does it seem that the cut Pokemon are set to return eventually, but there's also the Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanics that level up battles. And with the cute faces of the starters lineup --and Farfetch’s hot new evolution, SirFetch’d--we are powerless to resist. It comes out exclusively on the Switch on November 15th.

10. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

Coming after a series of multiplayer duds, The Fallen Order returns Star Wars to the singleplayer format. In it, we'll see a Jedi entry that introduces a new character, Cal Kestis, who finds himself on the run from the Galactic Empire. Fallen Order is set shortly after the events of Revenge of the Sith, which means we'll a lot of the same, familiar universe we loved.

Their latest trailer doesn't just give us a closer look into Cal's mission, it also shows off all the cool lightsaber fights we'll get to experience. Sure, EA hasn't exactly had the best reputation and maybe Fallen Order can be their saving grace. It's coming out Nov 15th on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

11. Deemo Reborn

Rayark's popular rhythm game is taking on a new form. Following the critical success of their first title, Deemo, their mysterious eponymous character is reborn in virtual reality. With this kind of change, Deemo Reborn shapes up to be a complete overhaul of the title. It's not just tapping mechanics and 2D cutscenes anymore.

With the move to the PSVR comes a lush new world. Not only does it have new gameplay elements, the immersion is also leveled with the added voice acting in their cutscenes. It's gonna be a whole new way of experiencing Rayark's compelling first title, and it's coming out on the PlayStation this November 21st.

12. Doom Eternal on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch

A new kind of chaos is coming, it's coming to rain down on and heaven and hell. It all feels like we're at the renaissance of classic shooters, but if there's one title we're glad to see, it's this.

Doom has always been a franchise built around splitting open demonic heads. Doom Eternal is set to upgrade the formula by adding to their multitude of monster varieties with heaven's hordes. Luckily for us, they're just as ugly. Other than the story, there's also much in store for us in gameplay with the focus on mobility, and the multiplayer invasions mode where other players get to play the demons themselves. PC and console owners, even those on the Switch, better watch out on November 22nd.

13. Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One

We're still in FPS territory. This time, we look into the crosshairs of Sniper's latest entry. Set in modern-day Siberia, expect to witness a sea of white and prep for the long haul in waiting for that perfect kill opportunity.

Its latest trailer is tinged with what we hope is irony as it shows the violent killing side by side with verses from the Hebrew bible. Odd trailer aside, Ghost Warriors Contracts hopes to amp up the sniping experience with more realism in their sniping, stealth, and tactics. Given the franchise's history though, let's just say the expectations aren't high. Either way, it's coming the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 22nd.

14. Doom 64

Just as we're talking about Doom's long history. Well, that history is arriving on the Switch. Announced by Pete Hines from Bethesda Softworks, Doom 64 is all about bringing one classic Nintendo title to the new generation. And, it comes in time to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary.

It's not exactly packed with the usual bells and whistles. It's a vanilla version of their 30 action-packed levels, which veterans will be happy to relive. That, plus the privilege of being able to bring the iconic misadventures in hell wherever you go. It's set to release this Nov 22nd.

15. Sid Meier's Civilization VI on PS4 and Xbox One

Already out on the PC and the Switch, the 6th installment of the Sid Meier's legendary strategy series is coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One too. It's just gonna be a port of the original title, but it also comes equipped with all the latest updates and refinements.

When it comes out next month, it's gonna be one of the first Civilization titles on the two consoles since 2008's Civilization Revolution for the PS4 and Xbox One. So, when it comes this November 22nd, it's gonna be a party for the would-be strategists on the platforms.

15 Upcoming Games of November 2019 on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch

We've all seen the best PS4 games. Here's the list of releases that didn't live up to their expections, the worst games on the PlayStation 4 according to both critics and gamers.

10. ARK Park

Sure, ARK: Survival Evolved is a great MMO game, but this VR take on the Jurassic Park-like experience isn’t as grand as everyone thought it would.

ARK Park has glaring issues. First, it’s obvious development was rushed. Resulting in an unfinished mess. Second, it’s expensive for a glorified tech demo. Intended as a groundbreaking VR title, it disappointed most of the ARK player base with Chinese developer Snail Games’ shady cash-grabbing practices.

Graphics-wise, the game is impressive. Every detail feels like you’re part of a Jurassic Park movie. However, the rest is clunky, controls are wonky and movement is a vertigo-inducing trip. Cubed3’s Drew Hurley criticized the gameplay loop, saying that, “The gathering is grindy, the crafting unrewarding, and the combat boring and repetitive.“ He gave it a 3 out of 10.

It’s devoid of all the great things that made Survival Evolved fun to play at. Performance-wise, compared to the abysmal PC version, this PS4 port is a smoother experience… but that doesn’t mean it’s still good. It receives a playscore of a 5.33.

9. Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma - Volume One

Rare is a game SO BAD the developers decided to cancel every future plan of the project and remove it from the face of the Earth, they even had to issue refunds to those who buy it. It was so terrible they no longer want to complete the next two volumes. It’s based on a very popular manga about afro samurais and hip-hop. It’s a huge downgrade from the first Afro Samurai game from 2009, which received favorable reviews.

Calling this game “bad” is an understatement. To start off, it has no direction. The entire pilgrimage of the hero is never realized. Every time it comes close to major story development, the game completely forgets about it. The blatant sexism, the terrible gameplay and a bit of bug in between, it is an obvious flop. Of all the reviewers, Destructoid hated the game so much they gave it a 1. Reducing its review to two words: ‘Digital Seppuku’ I mean, come on. There’s no reason to seriously consider buying this game, even the devs are removing it from most major video game stores.

At least the soundtrack is a banger. It has a playscore of 5.16.

8. Left Alive

Considered as a spin-off for Front Mission, Square’s brand-new action-survival game feels like a hot topic version of Metal Gear.

The game takes you to the dark and gritty future where technology is rampant and mechs are a thing. You take control of three protagonists with different perspectives, sounds cool, right? But no. According to most players, the game is ‘complete garbage’. The game’s lackluster content makes you feel that the devs knew what they were doing when they named it Left Alive.

Most of the game’s issues come from its performance issues that come alongside a triple-A price tag. There’s no good reason to purchase this title in its current state, or maybe forever. Push Square gave it a 2 out of 10. Disappointed by everything the game delivered. Saying that, “Left Alive categorically fails at everything it sets out to accomplish”. It’s a shame since a lot of talented people from popular video game franchises extended their help only to produce this… abomination.

It’s better off dead, really. It receives a playscore of 5.13.

7. Tennis World Tour

Sports games can be bad too, especially when the developers don’t bother trying. Tennis World Tour was supposed to be the new standard for Tennis. You could choose from a wide variety of iconic professional players and even experience a career mode.

You might be asking, “How is it bad when it follows the same formula as other sports titles?!” The answer is, like most games on this list, it is an incomplete mess. Even after a year since its release, no major improvements were made to the game regarding its slow movement and game-breaking bugs. Not to mention the shady practice from the developers.

Dual Shockers gave it a 3 out of 10. Attacking the game’s terrible marketing and presentation. They said, “It’s one thing to not have key features at launch, but the absence of solid gameplay puts the final nail in the coffin.”. The game might appease some casual players, but those who spend the full price would think it to be a waste of their money and their time. Other Foreign reviewers, such as Multiplayer and IGN Italy both gave it a 5 out of 10. At least they’re a bit forgiving, but still share the same concerns from most people. It has a playscore of a 5.04.

6. Bravo Team

This is an unexpected disappointment from the company that gave us the horrifying Until Dawn and even The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan. Bravo Team is a VR shooter and another victim of rushed development. Only created within 13 months, it gave a bad rep for Supermassive Games considering that they should know better.

It was intended to be this groundbreaking VR shooter but unfortunately, it was far from that. Its cover-shooter elements are broken and it doesn’t feel like it’s a 2018 game. Aside from that, the enemies are bullet sponges that make no sense. Their AI is so bad it feels like they wanted to die with the game too.

TechRaptor was furious and confused by the game’s design. Giving it a 2 out of 10. Saying that “It is absolutely baffling how truly bad Bravo Team really is. Nothing about this game screams “this is a final product ready for release”.” It is marred by numerous bugs and various performance issues resulting from the rushed development. It is as expected.

Bravo Team is FUBAR and it has a playscore of a 5.04.

5. THE QUIET MAN

Another example of ambitious titles that failed to thrive. The Quiet Man is Square Enix’s immersive narrative-driven story accompanied by an energetic combat and live-action sequences. They even had the gall to hire actors for this one but to be fair, they’re kinda good, the game is just bad. It has a really interesting concept, but horrible execution. The entire game is set within ‘one night’ and it showcases Square’s seamless mix of Live-Action elements and CGI… but it all boils down to one thing: IT’S BORING.

Cultured Vulture’s Ashley Bates gave it a 2 out of 10, saying that, “...consider it a fairly cheap palette cleanser that’ll make you appreciate the much better games on the market.” Most of the major concerns come from its ‘silent world’ since you take control of a deaf protagonist. You literally can’t hear anything at all. There are no subtitles even when other people are talking.

It’s a conceptual catastrophe that failed to capture the real intention of the creators for the players. Even GameSpot gave it a 2 out of 10. Criticizing the boring combat. Saying that the“Simplistic, ungainly combat is all the more surprising given that it is The Quiet Man's only gameplay mechanic.”

It receives a playscore of a 5.02

4. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5

It’s heartbreaking to see one of our favorite childhood games get sequels that don’t even compare to the original. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is a sad and disappointing follow-up to a legendary series. To make the long story short, it’s a technical mess. Most of the controls don’t even work as intended and the classic attitude that made Pro Skater great was gone.

Jimquisition’s Jim Sterling gave it a 2 out of 10. Saying that, “Tony Hawk 5 looks like the burned corpse of a three-legged sheep and plays like the results of teaching a chimpanzee how to code.” Even with an online mode, it’s better you’re doing it offline on your own as it adds no variety to the gameplay. The lack of social features make multiplayer tedious, jarring and could cause some performance drops to your gameplay. GamesRadar gave it a 1.5 out of 5, citing that “..it's a constant reminder of how much greater the originals were, and how much you'd rather be playing them instead.”

Purchasing this game at its full retail price is a terrible idea. Just like most of the criticisms from this game, you’re better off playing the classics instead. It has a playscore of a 4.90

3. Weeping Doll

Horror games are a unique bunch. As long as they scare the crap out of us, they have the pass to be ‘okay’ and we’d recommend it to our friends. Weeping Doll is unlike any other horror game. It’s a cheap pandering for the fans of the genre with its uninspired and generic designs.

It’s a VR title that tries to accomplish something great with its haunting atmosphere, but fails to retain its consistency in its short game time. ZTGD gave it a 3, citing that, “...it’s not even terrifying; the only thing scary is how disappointingly mediocre this experience is.”

There’s a lot of horror games on the market and Weeping Doll shares no distinctiveness to the other great titles. It’s a shame, considering the visuals are really top-notch. GameSpew disliked the game’s presentation, giving it a 4 out of 10. Saying that “The confusing set pieces, empty story, and rough dialogue will distract you from enjoying the experience.”

It sets a lesson that horror games don’t always have to be played in Virtual Reality. It has a playscore of a 4.78.

2. Road Rage

Also another example of a game that you’re better off playing with its original version. Road Rage is a shoddy racing game with open-world elements. As a rider, it is your job to own the streets and smack those who stand in your way. But underneath it… testosterone-fueled presentation, it’s an underwhelming game with no reason to play. Everything is monotonous and it gets pretty repetitive doing the same missions again and again.

TSA was so annoyed at its gameplay loop, especially the unfulfilling combat and ‘road raging’. They gave it a 2 out of 10. Saying that the game has “...become harder to tolerate knowing just how deeply unfulfilling the core gameplay is, even when you factor in the budget price tag.”

It is a terrible title that leaves no satisfaction at the end of the road. It’s a shame since the PS1 classic was so well-received. It has a playscore of a 4.56.

1. Basement Crawl

This pathetic excuse of a Bomberman inspired game is still the reigning champion of Whatoplay’s worst PlayStation 4 games. It is so terrible the devs decided to remake the game from the ground up, giving it free for the poor players who purchased it. Just like Bomberman, you blow up your enemies to smithereens. But Basement Crawl isn’t just that… it also has major horror elements and it’s sad nobody gets to feel its bone-chilling atmosphere due to its… abysmal performance issues.

In addition to that, the game’s other major concern comes from its easily exploitable online mode. Hacks and game-breaking bugs plague its servers, ruining the entire experience. There is no sense going back to this already broken title so it’s best we leave it in the basement. PS Universe gave it a 4 out of 10, saying that, the game “...tries hard to recapture the magic of Bomberman but has a hard time with its horror theme, lack of a real tutorial, and online connectivity issues.“

There’s no saving this one and it sets another lesson to the developers that games should be polished before its release. There’s no point releasing unfinished products only to issue refunds. The rest of the reviewers, including IGN, GameSpot, GamesRadar, Polygon and Destructoid all had one thing in common to say about this trainwreck: It’s best we play the original Bomberman instead.

It has a playscore of a 4.26

10 Worst PlayStation 4 Games of All Time

The Beat 'Em Ups are invading the new platforms and Taito is making their own entrance with The Ninja Saviors - Return of the Warriors. Already released on European platforms, The Ninja Saviors has just recently received its North and South American release date of October 15th for the Nintendo Switch as well as the PlayStation 4.

Day 1 Physical Edition buyers will be getting a printed manual, stickers, as well as a poster along with their copy. As a special compensation for the delayed launch, Taito is even putting in two character cards of Raiden and Yaksha, both of which will be exclusive to North America.

Here's a summary of the game:

In THE NINJA SAVIORS – Return of the Warriors, players assume the role of one of five android ninjas to take on the tyrant Banglar, and his henchmen, with a variety of individual moves in a dystopian future. Along with two completely new characters, the fully revised side-scrolling arcade brawler also finally offers fans the eagerly awaited two-player co-op mode and an online ranking system so that you can measure yourself against fighters from all over the world. In a total of eight levels, players will brawl their way through waves of enemy hordes, either alone or in pairs.

The reception from critics so far hasn't been the best. On the PlayStation 4, it currently has a Provisional PlayScore of 7.50. Meanwhile, on the Switch, it received a slightly higher Provisional PlayScore of 7.83. It's not quite Best PS4 or Best Switch material, but seeing as its just a classic rereleased into newer consoles, it's a little expected.

15. Granny: Chapter Two

Watch out, Granny's got her ears on you...and this time she's got company. This title comes after the first Granny game, and it marks the introduction of a hard of hearing but hard-hitting Grampa.

The object of the game remains the same: you have five days to escape the house, and each day is rife with danger. Hide in wardrobes, or under the beds, but your safety is never certain until you get out.

With an upgrade on visuals and a whole new environment to explore, it's all anyone could for hope in a sequel. Here's hoping they don't find you. It has a provisional playscore of 8.79.

14. Popcorn Burst for Android and iOS

Popcorn Burst, like many mobile games, is pretty straightforward. It's a casual game where the only goal is to pop as much popcorn into a shape to fill it up to the given line. But, you can't just pop it willy nilly. You'll have to finesse it well enough to get to the goal without wasting a single kernel.

It's a very simple game, sure. However, Popcorn Burst manages to sell the formula well enough thanks to its pleasing cartoon aesthetics and charming animations. There are few microtransactions and ads to look out for though, but overall it's one sleek, and smooth casual game for a few hours entertainment.

It has provisional playscores of 8.8 on the iOS and 8.2 on the Android.

13. i Peel Good

There are casual games with simplistic mechanics like Popcorn Burst...and there's this. We said the last game was straightforward, but i Peel Good basically takes the cake.

In it, you're faced with a rotating fruit and your job is to peel it and peel it well. Come face to face with a variety fruits--or not fruits--and just have a go at taking as much its outer layer as possible. If you're an achiever, the longest peel stat will probably keep you going through each level. Plus, there's the added treat seeing some fruit trivia at the end.

If you're into fruits and don’t mind looking at a few ads for them, you could check this game out on the iOS with a playscore of 8.8.

12. Harbingers - Last Survival

It's time to get serious and Wanda Cinema Games' RPG survival is here to be our guide. Aesthetics-wise, Harbingers has got it down to a tee. Wrapped in familiar JRPG aesthetics, any fan of anime might just appreciate the detail and effort put into that. Command a team of adventurers fight off the hordes with strategic positioning, as well as their unique abilities.

On top of the PvE, there's also a chance for you to show off your skills in PvP arenas. As good as that sounds, it seems like the game is facing some technical and balance problems at the moment. Still, it's one of the highest-ranking this month with a score of 9.0.

11. Detention

Detention has already been a sensation on the PC and consoles, but last September, they started spreading the horrors on the mobile too. This port to the Android is a free to play, giving you a sneak peek of the spine-tingling sensations of the Taiwanese production.

Detention tells the tale of two students trapped in the halls of their high school after the events of Taiwan's long martial law period. With an anchor on actual events and an atmosphere that's well-crafted, it just makes Detention's scenes feel all the more real.

With the free demo, you'll get a taste of what's to come. With a score of 9, it just might be worth the investment.

10. Death Park: Horror Clown Scary Escape Game

The horror continues. This ain't IT, but there's a clown here too, and it's definitely out for blood. Out in the grimy, yellow halls of the so-called Death Park, a madman is on the loose and you need to find a way out.

Unlike your run of the mill monster game, getting out of Death Park will require you to use some smarts. Collect items along the way and solve the puzzles you face amid its hospital halls, basements, and dizzying mazes. But, don't forget to keep track of the creepy clown's moves or you just might find him the next corner.

It has a playscore of 9.29.

9. Freshman Fantasies: Romance Otome Game

This is the first of two Otome games this month and freshman fantasies take us back to our own first days of high school. Y'know, when we were doted on by four fabulous cuties and all we had to was pick.

It’s a male-only population though. If you swing that way, you get to pick from your childhood friend, Joey; the football player, Ben; Alex the rich guy; and the band leader, Nate.

What might dampen an otherwise awesome game though are their Premium choices which puts paywalls on important decisions and exclusive scenes. A little spice your life for a price, it has a provisional playscore of 9.38.

8. The Spellbinding Kiss: Romance Otome Game

Our next game beat out the last time by a small margin. And, yes, it's still all boys we're fighting over here too.

Unlike the slice of like style of Freshman Fantasies, The Spellbinding Kiss is the more magical tale of romance. You play the role of a woman who goes from being a recent owner of a pharmacy to an enrollee in the local magic school where three fantastically handsome men await.

Go through each of their exciting chapters and get to know Kafka, Jules, and Cien better. It's essentially the same, with all its impressive graphics and storylines, and of course the romance shortcuts of their premium choices. It has a provisional playscore of 9.58.

7. Hoppia Tale for iOS and Android

Hop on this colorful animal adventure and relive the memories of videogame past. Hoppia tale combines features of classics like Zelda, Goof Troop, and Bomberman. Play as their friendly animal companions, fight against a slew of enemies and solve the puzzles to bring back the balance to the world of Hoppia.

These all add up to an exciting journey full of bosses to fight and characters to play as and customize. Using the coins you win against monsters, you can buy clothes, accessories, and the opportunity to revive when the going gets tough.

It has provisional playscores of 9.62 on the iOS and 9.38 on the Android.

6. Gravity Rider Zero

There's no time for traipsing about here. A sequel to the Gravity Rider, Gravity Rider ZERO is all about speed and managing it well enough to get through whatever obstacle. It ups the ante of your regular hill climb racer with enhanced graphics, trickier physics, and fancier presentations.

Get points for each successful jump and rack up bonuses with impressive tricks and wheelies. It's not all that different from their first game but now there are new tracks to conquer and a host of new vehicles to ride and personalize. It has a score of 9.65.

5. Attack on Titan TACTICS

The Titan chronicles continue on the mobile with this strategy game based on the popular anime. A tower defense game at its core, Attack on Titan Tactics challenges you to defend your towns from the waves of titans that are threatening to destroy it. On their maps, they're not quite the colossal beasts we know them to be.

But, on the other hand, it calls on the help of all the anime's familiar faces, turning them into cards, each equipped with unique abilities to help you in the battles ahead. A must-have for fans of the Attack on Titan series, it gets a provisional playscore of 9.74.

4. Merge Magic! for iOS and Android

This isn't your ordinary match-three puzzle game. If you're a fan of Zynga's own Merge Dragons game, then you'll know exactly what to expect.

Merge Magic is practically the same game with a whole new art style. Faced with a grid filled a variety of plants and creatures, all you have to do is merge similar objects and watch them evolve into something new. With each successful merging, you'll be able to lift the curse and bring life back into the decaying world. With each new discovery in their fields, you'll get to expand the variety of your very own garden. It has provisional playscores of 9.75 on the iOS, and 8.8 on the Android.

3. Sugar Blast! for iOS and Android

And if it's match-three puzzle making you want, Sugar Blast gives you just that. From the makers of Angry Birds, Rovio takes the same exact formula they used in Angry Birds Dream Blast.

This time, it's less fowl and furious, and more delectable and delightful. Tap on their color-coded candies, create something entirely new and use these to explode away from the challenges of their many levels. Sure, it's not entirely new or original, but Rovio knows exactly how to keep you coming back for more. It has provisional playscores of 9.79 on the iOS and 9.19 on the Android.

2. Ulala: Idle Adventure for iOS and Android

In a world where business is epidemic, there's nothing like games that play themselves. That's exactly what Ulala offers. Except, while most idle games are simple, solitaires for casual fun, Ulala is a full-on MMORPG.

Set in the varying climes of the Stone Age, Ulala Idle Adventure lets you share the primitive dangers and delights along with your friends. Because when you're in the Stone Age, helping each other and the community is key. But, you'll also get to choose your own character, level it up, and arm them with weapons and upgrades to survive longer. An idle game that stands out from the rest, it has provisional playscores of 9.79 on the iOS and 9.0 on the Android.

1. FOX Sports Super 6 on iOS and Android

There's no doubt football fans have brought this game to the top of the list. Take on Terry's challenge and use your football stats smarts to predict the outcome of the NFL and college football games. While that's fun enough for most fans, just to add to the excitement, they're putting money into the equation. With your predictions, you can win cold hard cash with up to $250,000 up for grabs every week.

So, what are you waiting for? It gets provisional playscores of 9.8 on the iOS and 9.4 on the Android.
