It may be the Western Frontier. West of Glory isn't as wild as your usual fair. There's still a fair amount of shooting, but it's not something you're personally involved in.

As the town sheriff, your contract is to manage the place to top efficiency and keep the law and order. Create buildings, recruit cowboys, gunners, and warriors, and make sure there's enough food for everyone.

Tap once to spin a knife around, and again to hit the targets in each stage. Make it through three rounds with no fatal misses and you get to go face to face with the level's fitting boss.

Hitty Knife's simple gameplay draws you in, sure, but it also knows how to up the ante, with harder and harder targets as the game goes on. Go from forests to deserts and volcanoes, and collect a few cool knives along the way. It has a score of 8.75.

Not only will you need that dexterity for picking up loot, but you'll also need it to revive yourself from the inevitable deaths by knives and bombs.

It's one hell of a competition, and luckily playing fair isn't in the rulebook. Fun for its short and fast-paced gameplay, it gets a provisional playscore of 8.76.

8. Warhammer Combat Cards

One of the longest-running cardgames, Warhammer 40K, with all its gothic, far-future Universe gets the digital Combat Cards treatment. More commonly played with their detailed miniatures, this digital game converts the tabletop
experience into a fast-paced tactical card game. Warhammer 40K Combat Cards uses the miniatures of Games Workshop's expansive universe.

It has a playscore of 8.78

5. Neon Splash

This casual game proves you don't need much to make a good game.

In Neon Splash, you swish around some weird liquid until you completely reveal the level's true neon image. As the pictures get significantly more complex, you'll need to put wrist into it to better distribute the liquids in the given space. With keys and coins lying around the level's dark corners, Neon Splash will always have you on the lookout. Earn enough, and you get a chance to win one of their many liquid skins. But, as a free game, you'll have to expect just a fair amount of levels and a whole lot of ads. It has a score of 8.8.

4. Rope Rescue! - Unique Puzzle on Android and iOS

Unlike what the title says, Rope Rescue isn't exactly the unique game it claims it to be. There's plenty of games out there with the same premise and probably presented better too. But, for this month's list of free android and ios games, we'll give it a pass.

A puzzler like many others, stretch out your cable, and rescue as many people as the level requires. With a surplus of people at each level, Rope Rescue is as forgiving as it gets.

While there was an impossible level on the Android for a while, it's all been sorted out. For now, it has a rating of 7.27 on the Android, and 8.8 on the iOS.

3. Sandwich! on Android and iOS

It follows the simple philosophical definition of a sandwich: a tossup of ingredients placed in between two pieces of bread. Bring together cheeses, tomatoes, and lettuce in order, and make sure no one gets left behind. Get it right, and you get to nom on your delicious creation. It's pretty straightforward and forgiving too. For a free game, sandwich's ads aren't intrusive at all.

Get your bite of casual puzzling with scores of 8.8 on the iOS, and 8.2 on the Android.

2. Merge Muscle Car Tycoon America

For a game built on muscle cars, it's not as adrenaline pumping as you'd expect. For this game though, with its mouthful of a title, it works to its advantage. Instead of the regular races, it's more like an evolutionary puzzle game except with cars. Merge two of the same cars, and you get a brand new set of wheels. Keep merging and racing around the racetrack until you collect all of their awesome muscle cars. Part casual puzzle, part idle game for muscle car enthusiasts, it gets a score of 9.

1. Balls?

Simplicity and succinctness are this month's formula for a winning title. Balls is an enticing invitation into a world of ricocheting shapes.

You start as a solitary sphere and your mission is to rack up points, cash, and experience by crashing into the balls that surround you. With enough upgrades, the action ramps up. From endless bounces to challenging faceoffs against other, geometric bosses.

Balls may start slow, but it only gets better and better. The crashes are satisfying, the upgrades are plenty, and the action endless. Its the best FREE game this month with a provisional playscore of 9.39 on the Android.

10. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa Of DANA

Ever since 1987, the Ys series has mostly been about the adventures of Adol the Red. And it has come a long way.

If you’re familiar with the tropes of the genre, this crimson-haired boy-wonder has the qualities of a JRPG protagonist: brave, naive and somehow uses the power of friendship to destroy enemies. Nihon Falcom’s latest Ys title is taking the series into unfamiliar territory, but with the same amount of charm and magic that once surrounded the series.

Rice Digital gave the PlayStation 4 version a perfect score. Stating that, “While Ys VIII doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it improves absolutely everything it can over its already predecessors.”

Fans of the old titles are in for a treat. Everything is a complete upgrade from the usual hacking and slashing. New players are gonna feel welcomed. The game takes little to no story content from previous titles except Adol’s memories and his old friend, Dogi. Most of its best features come from engaging gameplay loop and fun characters to play with.

However, some localization issues will plague your playthrough… but the series’ pivotal JRPG elements remain and it’s as fantastic as ever. It receives a playscore of 8.81.

9. Final Fantasy VII

After all these years, Final Fantasy VII is still the talk of the town. With a massive Remake coming this 2020, the hype generated by this popular FF title is alive and kicking. But, before we get our hands on the much-awaited Remake, we go back to where everything began. Since 1997, it opened new doors for JRPG with its fascinating story and a cast of memorable characters. Cloud and his friends are once again saving the world from an evil Corporation and a sinister long-haired Villain.

It’s no surprise FF7 is the series’ highest achievement. Most of the reviews on the PlayStation 4 are all about how polished this re-release is. Including the addition of Trophies and New Cheats for some ‘wacky’ playthroughs.

After 18 years, it reminds everyone that it's not just another nostalgia bait. The visuals may be dated but the quality remains the same. Final Fantasy VII receives a playscore of 8.86.

8. Kingdom Hearts III

At long last, we live in a world where Kingdom Hearts III is out. Sora and his band of Disney brothers are finally at rest after the series’ long, and somewhat confusing plot.

Kingdom Hearts III is an amalgam of all the great things the titles were known for. The slick hack-and-slash combat, fantastic Disney and Pixar worlds, and not to mention, the cast of memorable characters.

But it’s far from perfect. Diehard fans of the series will love the story’s closure, but others might criticize the game for its ‘underwhelming’ execution, especially with its convoluted story and easy gameplay. They even argued that “It’s not as great as Kingdom Hearts II.”

Despite all that, the scores don’t lie. Spanish reviewer 3D Juegos gave this game a 9 out of 10. That goes out to most of the game reviewers on our database, especially Game Informer, TechRaptor, Easy Allies and Shacknews.

It is a polarizing entry, but at the end of the day, it’s still the Kingdom Hearts III we’ve all known and loved. Some fans will love it, and some may hate it.

Kingdom Hearts III receives a playscore of 8.87.

7. Yakuza 0

The game that warranted a gameplay walkthrough by me and Earnest. Yakuza 0 is a wellspring Japanese culture. It serves as the prequel to the famed Yakuza series from SEGA which is all about a man and his family problems.

As a mix of arcade and JRPG, enjoy the numerous activities the open-world of Tokyo has to offer. Especially when you’re out in the streets beating out thugs, eating at restaurants, and maybe wasting a bit of your time with Karaoke.

Yakuza 0 received numerous praises, especially its story and combat. The ability to switch between multiple styles was a welcome addition, making gameplay more dynamic.

Most of IGN’s international sites, especially IGN Russia, gave this game a 9 out of 10. The game is praised for its mix of violent themes and its side-dish of whimsical activities. It seamlessly blends both elements into one compelling action-JRPG game. For all it’s worth, Yakuza games are popular in Japan. Damn shame it doesn’t get enough traction in the West.

It receives a playscore of 8.88.

6. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

There’s always enough Final Fantasy for the world. After a successful release in Japan, the definitive edition of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XII is finally out in Western shores.

This version comes with whole new surprises that, in turn, makes for a completely different game. It’s best feature comes in the form of a gameplay rework that aims to have faster combat than before. It fixed most of the issues that plagued the vanilla version of the game.

The International Zodiac System is by far the biggest change they have for this edition. It adds much-needed depth to its core gameplay loop as you can switch between characters and select from its Zodiac Sign and Job trees.

Spanish reviewers Vandal. and MeriStation gave this game a 9 and 8 out of 10, respectively. Most reviews praised the game’s fantastic remaster work, which not only include the Zodiac rework, but also graphics and audio. The story remains the same, which is enough to merit a criticism. But despite all that, The Zodiac Age receives a playscore of 8.89.

5. NieR: Automata

Cute Japanese waifus in skimpy clothing aren’t rare sights in this day and age. Yoko Taro’s latest game embraces that kind of element, all the while injecting a layer of existential dread and fantastic gameplay.

Square Enix’s spin-off to the Drakengard series takes you into a desolate Earth populated by Alien-robots. NieR: Automata is a great example of good Japanese RPG design. Its numerous endings and layers upon layers of secrets are calling out everyone to discover every enigma in its grand post-apocalyptic sci-fi world.

GameRant gave this game a 10 out of 10. Praising its bizarre and strange presentation. Even mentioning that it’s reminiscent of a Kojima game trying to make his own version of Final Fantasy. The game excels in its characters. Especially when you’re playing as the Androids determined to save the planet from harm.

Of all the titles in this list, this one is an exemplary addition as it continues to break the fourth wall with its engaging story and characters. It merely uses the genre JRPG to trick us into playing a game about the futility of life.

Nier Automata receives a playscore of 8.92.

4. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes Of An Elusive Age

When it comes to true JRPG adventures, Square Enix’s Dragon Quest series has you covered. And with its success, some characters even made it to the Smash roster.

Considered as the best of the series yet, XI excels with its fantastic presentation of living that JRPG fantasy.

GameSpot gave Echoes Of An Elusive Age a 9 out of 10. Praising its solid presentation story-wise and combat-wise. Even French reviewers Game Kult and jeuxvideo.com gave this a solid 8 out of 10. The fresh feeling of the game’s 3D visuals on the PlayStation 4 signifies its rebirth for the modern audience.

Most praises come from its interesting turn-based combat. It may be dated but it packs enough interesting details to still be relevant. Not to mention the cast of characters, especially the Luminary himself, has been the hallmark in every Dragon Quest game.

Each of these characters offer their own stories to tell and some nifty contributions to the party. Aside from maybe its minor issues about its soundtrack and oversexualization of characters, Dragon Quest XI is still a great JRPG title with a playscore of 8.96.

3. Final Fantasy IX

Another Final Fantasy title on this list. It’s no surprise that the series has been through a lot. There were great and not-so-great FF titles, but among the GREATS is none other than Final Fantasy IX. And yes, Final Fantasy VII isn’t the only FF title out there.

If you have the time, it’s always a good reason to look back at the video games that came before. Dual Shockers gave this one a 9.5 out of 10. PlayStation 4 owners, whether its their first time or not, will experience the memorable story this FF entry has to offer.

Its re-rendered to the best possible image for your high-definition screen. But you have to remember that it’s a game that came out almost two decades ago. Once again, follow the story of Zidane and his band of bandits as they get entangled in a war between the two nations.

There’s really not much of a change in the story, and there’s no good reason to. It remains an example to the future Final Fantasy titles that story and characters are more important than grand spectacle and over the top budgets. It receives a playscore of 8.97.

2. Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir

2007 was a long time ago and thankfully for Vanillaware and ATLUS, the Nordic memories of this action-packed JRPG lives on in this polished remake of mythological proportions.

Leifthrasir is Odin Sphere at its FINEST. What was once a PlayStation 2 title is now making a name for itself in the PlayStation 4 community as a stellar example of great JRPG.

Destructoid and even IGN gave it a 9.5 out of 10 because they were in awe with the impressive effort it took to remake the game from the ground up. IGN stated that, “Vanillaware went above and beyond to realize its full potential with the addition of more role-playing elements, a near-perfect framerate, stunning graphics, better maps, and a more vigorous combat mechanic.”

But despite the revitalized feeling of Ragnarok, the game’s cast of five unique characters and their unique stories are still something to look forward to.

Vanillaware knew about how important these are and made everything better from start to finish. Its hyperactive platforming combat, magical backdrop and beloved cast of characters, Leifthrasir is one of PlayStation 4’s gems.

It has a playscore of a 9.00

1. Persona 5

Of course we all saw this one coming. ATLUS’ award-winning series is back and it’s time they steal our hearts… or maybe they already did.

Join the Phantom Thieves as they reform society while they go about their usual day to day High School drama and family woes. Persona 5 combines slice of life Visual Novel, Dating Simulator and Dungeon-Crawling turn-based JRPG into one effective title.

GamesRadar+ gave this a perfect score due to its phenomenal presentation from start to finish. Just like any of us, the game was universally praised. Especially for its realistic cast of characters, selection of jazzy tunes, story and even its slick red and black art style.

You might be spending most of your time talking to people or summoning your Persona. Either way, each experience is exciting as the other. The only gripe this game has is that it’s demanding, especially to those who have a busy schedule. 100 hours of gametime is not a joke… and some players who bought the game on day one haven’t even finished it yet.

But that’s not the point in a Persona game. 5 is no different. Taking your time, making friends, and immersing yourself in its rich narrative is the perfect way to enjoy this masterpiece.

It has a playscore of 9.45.

Top 10 PlayStation 4 JRPGs of All Time

Also part of the re-release is its added ‘cheat code’ feature which unlocks the ability to be completely invulnerable and have Infinite Lives. For added replayability, its “Interactive Game Viewer” lets players relive the full game experience with the freedom to skip certain scenes.

It is a treasure trove of wonder. Players can also pick between the multiple playable platform versions of each of the two titles for added immersion.

The collection will be available on October 29 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

<
10. Forged Fantasy

Most famous for their zombie shooter, Kill Shot and Kill Shot Virus, Hot Head steps out of the darkness to bring us an action RPG in the world of magic and might.

Their shooting specialization comes in handy in this game's cover-based combat. Join a team of heroes and get right down to slaying a whole bestiary of magical beings. As a mid-core action RPG, you don't have full control over your characters.

Each engagement has a more cinematic flair. But, in Forged Fantasy, each second of combat is worth it, if only for the satisfying hits of their attacks and spells. Their RPG comes out in their collectible gear, upgradeable attributes. Forged Fantasy isn't perfect. There may be more games that nail the action RPG formula better, but for an offline experience, it does the job with a score of 7.87.

9. Beat Cop

11bit Studios' point and click adventure gives us a ticket to the past. Travel back to the simple 80s as you play a day in the life of a disgraced cop, Jack Kelly. While his might seem like a living hell, watching him navigate a world that's seemingly against him is pretty entertaining.

Beat Cop has a nice, living world to immerse in. Even though its just pixels, beat cop's environments seem meticulously detailed, from its clean HUD to the streets themselves, lined with moving cars and interesting passersby.

Where the game falls short though is its lack of voice acting. Between handing out parking tickets and managing the mafia and his miserable wife, Jack Kelly's is a life worth seeing through, no matter how short. It has a playscore of 8.04.

8. LEGO Tower

We've been building tiny towers for years, but this year LEGO officially enters the tower-building fun with their own trademarked twist on an old smartphone classic.

It features the same formula as NimbleBit's Tiny Tower, excpet instead of pixel people, it's populated with LEGO’s signature polygons. Invite new residents into your up and coming building, create establishments, and find the best intersection of minifigure and job compability for maximum profit.

With this game, LEGO also creates a virtual haven for all the talented master builders, as you get to customize minifigs and rooftops with an array of cool lego structures and pieces. A must-have for long-time fans, it gets a playscore of 8.07.

7. Pet Rescue Puzzle Saga

From the makers of Candy Crush, Bubble Witches, and Farm Heroes, King continues their ventures in the addictive puzzle gaming world with a brand new muse.

This time, we dive into the world of pets and get to meet their collection of adorable characters. It's match-three puzzle gaming as usual and your skills will be put to the test as you tap and destroy blocks to save the friendly creatures from harm.

On top of the usual puzzle-solving, Pet Rescue also offers a unique feature where you tend to your newly rescued friends in your Pet home. There are over 30 unique pets to care for and collect and hundreds of levels to get through for hours of fun. It has a playscore of 8.15.

6. Angry Birds Dream Blast

Rovio's angry birds are a little less angry in this move to the more contemplative puzzle format. Now, with a movie franchise coming up, they’re putting on a new face for the future of their games. First up, it looks like they're chasing in on the match-three puzzle gameplay too.

Even in this puzzle format though, they're still putting in some explosive elements to appease their fiery fowls. In their many, you're tasked to collect certain bubble shapes and sizes in a limited number of moves to earn to the ticket to the next round.

It's not the most innovative mobile game, but it adds a ton of cute presentation flourishes that are consistent with their new angry birds style. Plus, you can bring the fun offline and there are new levels every week. It has a playscore of 8.33.

5. FRAG Pro Shooter

Hero Shooters are in and Oh BiBi’s is one to look out for. Frag Pro Shooter stands out with the appeal of its quirky characters on top of their engaging 1v1s.

A team shooter on the mobile, the game's controls are made to be simple and straightforward. Their automatic shooting takes out most of the complexity of the five v fives. But, it leaves in the delight of strategizing, as well as the intriguing complexity of their card-based gameplay.

Survive better in the drawn-out gunfights using the unlocks and upgrades you get from the luck of the draw. Combining two elements into one. It has a playscore of 8.48.

4. Evolution: The Video Game

Now here's a game that would make Charles Darwin proud. If you're already familiar with Evolution: The Boardgame, then this game needs no introduction. Based on the same acclaimed boardgame, this videogame version for the Android shares most of the original mechanics. It's composed of three phases, beginning with adding food, followed by adding traits to your species, and then the feeding.

Play against an AI or an online opponent, unleash a new species into the world and help it adapt to the constraints of each round. Evolution has plenty of trait cards to choose from, whether you want to turn creatures into hardened herbivores, or carnivores capable of eliminating enemy lines as well as your own.

There's a lot of interesting interactions, and even though they're not played out, you can always rely on your good old imagination and their helpful but subtle animations. It has a playscore of 8.54.

3. Grimvalor

If it's portable hack and slash that you're looking for, then look further than Direlight's Grimvalor. The game was first released on the iOS in 2018, where it received a high playscore 9.06. Grimvalor on the Android is a little bit different though.

Instead of a full game, it's a free to play demo that lets you enjoy one chapter of the renowned game and allows you to find out if their punishing mobile action is for you. But once you do, you'll discover not just a visually stunning action-platformer but also one that packs a lot of challenges within its limited format.

Enter the dark halls of Vallaris and navigate through the darkness to discover the fate of the lost King. A compelling told through its sinister dungeons and cool monsters. Grimvalor might just your budget Dark Souls. That's nothing short of a compliment for this game with a score of 8.57.

2. Archero

Archero is your next go-to roguelike experience. A game that's been dubbed as Binding of Isaac meets Archery, Archero might look easy enough with its automated shooting and friendly visuals.

But, the stakes rise slowly but surely as you go through their many levels. Face monsters of different sizes and survive the onslaught with your kiting skills and the many abilities you pickup. Die, and you can use your collected to level up and accelerate your progress in the next. Other than being a great title, on the whole, Archero also works as a great offline game. Keep on fighting outside your wifi connection and it'll bring your character up to speed once you get back.

Its energy bars take a while to refill and you may need to reconnect to the internet more than the usual offline game. However, with its overall excellent archery experience, these downsides don't weigh it down all too much and it gets a score of 8.54

1. Oddmar

Earn your hall pass to Valhalla in this side-scrolling platformer from Mobge games. While Oddmar doesn't do welcomes all too well, with its main map looking like any other mobile game.

However, all of this changes when you get into its world, where you get ushered into the universe by its visually stunning stages that may equal some of today's console platformers.

Oddmar's gameplay is a bit like Super Mario, except this time you're a Viking on an epic adventure to redeem yourself. It even manages to keep the mushrooms, not just for what might be one of the most unique jumping animations out there, but also as enemies and platforms too. Weird, but it somehow works for Oddmar's grounded yet magical aesthetics.

We've always had our fair share of good platformers. Oddmar, on the other hand, set a new bar for quality on the mobile with a playscore of 8.87.

Top 10 Free Offline Android Games of 2019

Arcade action on the Nintendo Switches of the Europe is set to take on a whole new level with the coming of A Duel Hand Disaster: Trackher. This game from Ask an Enemy Studios is a split screen twin-stick shooter.

Despite being a split-screen experience, it's actually a singleplayer experience. It diverges from the traditional shmup formula by letting you control two ships simultaneously while they do two different tasks. On the left, you destroy incoming enemies to gain points. On the right, you recover resources in the hopes of adding multipliers to your score. You take damage on the left; on the other, you don't.

If that sounds too simple for you. A Duel Hand Disaster: Trackher has another trick up its sleeve. In order for you to keep your scores, you'll have to extricate yourself from the mission intact. That's right. No more dying until you reach that elusive high score. It's up to you to decide your own limits in achieving your next best score. You die, and you lose all your progress to hubris.

A Duel Hand Disaster: Trackher is also currently on Steam Early Access but it has been released on the Switch last Jun 10, with only two critic reviews at the moment: a 2.00 from Pure Nintendo, and a more generous 7.50 from Nintendo Enthusiast. While not exactly Best Switch Games material, it's still might be a fun pickup for arcade shmup fans.

It's set to make its European debut on September 3rd. Pre-ordering the game will net you a 10% discount.

1. The Outer Worlds

Obsidian Entertainment moves on to a new IP. Fans of their previous games are hoping that it will come with all the things that made New Vegas as great as it was.

In Outer Worlds, you're sent to an alternate future controlled by megacorporations, all of which are bent on colonizing all planets in orbit and out. Create your own character, wake up onboard an abandoned ship at the edge of space and use this to travel around the galaxy to investigate the nature of the corporations.

Aside from being an RPG, The Outer Worlds is also first-person shooter where you can use a VATS-like Time Dilation System against the various enemies. With various factions and ways to navigate a situation, your choices will still play a huge part in the gameplay. It probably won't be as big a game as New Vegas, The Outer Worlds remains a promising title for fans of their RPG shooters. Coming out on the Epic Games Store this Oct 25th.

2. Divinity: Fallen Heroes

While we're on the subject of iconic names in RPG, this is the next title from one of the veterans in the industry, Larian Studios.

Taking up the name of their claim to fame, Divinity: Fallen Heroes isn't a a direct sequel to their most recent hit Divinity: Original Sin 2. Instead, it's spinoff title that focuses on the tactics side of gameplay but still set in the same Divinity universe.

Distilled to its core concepts, GamesRadar described the game as a blend of their style of RPG with the action of classic XCOM. Using one of the canon endings as a jumping off point, play as Lady Vengeance and captain a familiar flying ship along with a staff of familiar faces. It's a purer, more refined version of Larian's combat, and even features the same environmental interactions.

It's still very early in production, but the excitement is palpable and it's set to release sometime this year.

3. Final Fantasy VIII: Remastered

This isn't a brand new game but it's news nonetheless. Before the arrival of their ground-up remake for Final Fantasy VII, Square Enix is bringing back another certified classic.

Although it's not a full-on remake, this remastered version of Final Fantasy VIII will prove a perfect first contact for those who didn't catch it when it first released on the original PlayStation in 1999. This entry has been considered one of the greatest FF titles of all time. Though its original release didn't quite live up to its legacy, it's set to get better with high definition graphics and updated character models.

Relive the adventures Squall Lionheart and help him lead his group of mercenaries once again. This time, you might get to fully appreciate the countenance of "the best looking guy" around. It's coming out sometime in 2019.

4. Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory

Ready your smiles, citizens, because when they say happiness is mandatory, they do mean it. This upcoming RPG brings a classic tabletop RPG to the modern videogame age, bringing together isometric RPGs with tactical combat.

Set in an Orwellian future filled with clones all sorts of technology, life as a troubleshooter is joy under the watchful, all-seeing eye of the Friend Computer. All you need to do is complete missions together with a team composed of four out 9 total specializations. With Traitors everywhere, Paranoia sets in as your supposed members rat out your misdeeds to the beloved Computer.

It's a game that injects comedy into the bleak dystopia, allowing you to laugh through the myriad failures ahead of you.

Brimming with the uniqueness of its character progression, its real-time-with-pause combat, and its Matt Mercer voice overs, Paranoia is all sorts of fun and it's coming out in 2019.

5. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2

Another one from the classic RPG vaults, Vampire: The Masquerade the tabletop RPG has been going since 1991. But, with the last full videogame release dating back to 2004, this upcoming sequel is a breath of fresh air for fans of the two cult classics.

Continue your vampiric adventures in the 21st century and settle into underworld gloom of nighttime Seattle. Getting your fangs wet with blood might still be important, there's also plenty of whacking, hacking, and shooting. As long as you make sure you got enough silver bullets.

Whoever you are, where you're from, and whatever you choose remains a massive of Vampire's gameplay. And, it's all gonna look even better with Nvidia's real-time ray-tracing tech, if you can live without your own reflection. It's coming out in March of 2020.

6. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

A lot can happen in ten years. Not so much for fans of the Mount & Blade series. Where hope might have been the only thing keeping the fandom going, TaleWorlds Entertainment finally brought something more concrete for all of us to hold on to.

Sure, it's no official release date. But, with this Early Access announcement is a promise that we'll get to see the fruit of what seems to be a decade-long labor.

Through the years, we've had our share of previews of their medieval playground--from a look into campaigns to overviews of their siege defence. All of which leave us only itching to see the beautiful, polished product that will offer us endless life in the Middle Ages.

Bannerlord when? Soon, it seems, with its Steam Early Access release scheduled for March of next year.

7. Cyberpunk 2077

Ever since the announcement from CD Projekt Red, the excitement for this upcoming open world action RPG has only mounted up. From its exploration of a cyberpunk dystopia, to the announcement of this year's wholesome breathtaking darling, Keanu Reeves' involvement in the project.

Since they've been breaking boundaries with Witcher, it's not a stretch to expect this one to do so as well. Create everything about your character, from their appearance, stats, background stories, and modifications. And then roam around Night City where Big Corporation is law.

Played in the first-person perspective, it all adds to immersion that's improved by a not-so unfamiliar future that feels fully populated and alive. All we know is it's gonna be hard to get out of the house when it releasest on April 16th, 2020.

8. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

First introduced to us as Dragonball: Project Z, Bandai Namco officially named it Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot at this year's E3 to signal its focus on Goku's arc in one of the most popular Dragon Ball series ever.

It might be a little worrying for some to have yet another iteration of his iconic adventures, Kakarot also promises to refresh the series with revitalized visuals and action RPG gameplay.

It aims to be THE dragon ball game of the generation and it's achieving it through its packed roster of legendary characters. They've been hard at work at announcing them.

Their latest one showcases Gohan's emotional confrontation with the villain Cell, while also giving glimpses to gameplay and sidemissions that build up to the famous faceoff. The game's release is still a long way off, so there might be even more of these to look forward to before its official date Early 2020.

9. Elden Ring

FromSoftware's second venture out of their Souls universe and they're bringing another veteran in the party.

Combining their talent for action-packed RPGs with the writing prowess of famed author, George RR Martin, it sets the tone for what might be their most ambitious title yet. There's no wondering why everyone's excited to see how this one turns out.

There's only a reveal trailer so far, so it's anybody's guess what the story and gameplay will be. But, Hidetaka himself has admitted to taking inspiration from the Lord of the Rings series, and perhaps the presence of a ring may be another central part of the plot. FromSoftware's may be heading towards a darker tone in this next title. With no release date, nothing is certain yet.

10. Baldur's Gate III

Of course an RPG list for the home of the classics wouldn't be complete without THIS. Just when we thought we were over buttering up Larian Studios, they pull us back even further with a move to resurrect one of the most iconic titles in the genre.

Baldur's Gate III won't be a direct sequel to the original. It will, however, stay faithful to their roots. Having been borne out of the Dungeons and Dragons universe, this third entry will be the first to adapt 5th edition D&D rules. This means there will be more than a few changes in abilities, dice, and things like advantages/disadvantages which will feel unfamiliar to those who haven't D&D since the 4th edition.

Meanwhile, what remains to be seen is whether it'll stick with turn-based combat or a real-time with pause system. Still probably very early in development, we'll be keeping our eyes open for more news until its eventual release.

The full version of Pocket Pair's creative roguelike cardgame, Overdungeon, has just launched on Steam.

This news comes in the wake of Slay the Spire which has been crawling its way up the Best PC Games list with a a PlayScore of 9.09 since it released last January. However, Overdungeon is hoping to do one better, claiming to bring a "completely new style" of real-time card battling. You can watch their official trailer below:

Overdungeon, like Slay the Spire, is a blend of roguelike dungeon crawling and real-time strategy which comes as a combination that's both replayable and satisfyingly chaotic. Pick a hero, pick your path, and use your deck

Overdungeon has been on the Steam store for a while and since then has earned a Provisional PlayScore of 8.33 from its 758 gamer reviews.

Pocket Pair's creative card-based roguelike officially launches on Steam.

Overdungeon Might Be The Next Slay the Spire

Platformers are a league of their own. Jumping from one place to another, gaining new abilities and even friends, it is a wholesome genre that continues to teach us about proper timing… and patience.
10. Sonic Mania

After a series of disappointing Sonic titles and movies (for now), SEGA was in a difficult position to redeem their famed Blue Hedgehog, well, until now. Sonic Mania was the answer to everyone’s burning questions and complaints. It was a rebirth of the ‘failing’ platformer and finally, it’s great in all directions.

GameSpot was impressed by its sentimental appeal, giving the game a 9 out of 10. Calling it “an excellent 2D platformer which surpasses its predecessors.” It fixed the mistakes of the old titles and managed to bring a ‘modern touch’ for its new (and old) players. For Sonic fans, it was huge news.

But it’s not perfect. Polygon even complained about the games’ frustrating controls, which was justified since there are new players coming in everyday. Another from Video Gamer criticised Mania for its reliance on nostalgia, which, in turn, gave this title no innovative changes.

However, SEGA is aware of it and they’re planning to improve the future Sonic titles. For all its worth, Sonic Mania is the franchise’s return to form and it has a playscore of 8.80.

9. Guacamelee! 2

The Mexiverse is back to explore. A sequel to Drinkbox’s award-winning platformer, return to the wild shoes of the brave Luchador as he continues to use his brawn… and brains to save his beloved world from doom.

Of all the list of reviews in our database, A review from Cubed3 gave this a perfect 10/10 due to its huge improvements to its Metroidvania elements. He lauds “the game’s ‘low skill floor, but high ceiling” when it comes to its core gameplay loop.

It even rewards those who are really up for the challenge when it comes to finding every secret in its interdimensional world.

In addition to this staggering success, IGN, GamesRadar+ and most of the gaming community also praised the game’s heavy emphasis on exploration. However, it’s not without flaws. Guacamelee 2 may be impressive, but to some, it is a downgrade compared to the first release that already set the bar high.

Combat remains fun, but the sheer amount of upgrades and stuff to do left players ‘unimpressed’, but hey, you can’t always please everyone. Nonetheless, it’s a fantastic game, Guacamelee 2 is indeed a prime example of platformers done right, and it receives a playscore of 8.82

8. Ratchet & Clank

Also one of Sony’s celebrated titles spanning decades. A re-imagining of the first game of the series and marks the comeback of the most iconic dynamic duos in gaming. Alongside its release is a film that did not live up to the game’s standards.

Ultimately, Ratchet & Clank is a step up compared to its older titles. IGN gave it a 9/10, admiring its nostalgic charm and the fun selection of WEAPONS to mess around with.

Most of the negative receptions the game received point to its slower segments and the lack of something new on its plate. At the end of the day, it’s just a remake, but Insomniac does it with confidence.

It has a playscore of 8.84.

7. Rayman Legends

When we’re talking about Platformers, nobody forgets about Ubisoft’s psychedelic display of power. Jump from painting to painting and enjoy vibrant levels with catchy tunes and rhythmic beats. It’s a Rayman game, all right.

It’s such a great game even GamesRadar+ and COGConnected are already calling it as one of the best platformers in recent times.Rayman Legends continues to push the limits of the genre by adding numerous gimmicks. They may look ridiculous at first, but on multiple playthroughs, they keep the game rewarding as the first time.

Most of the game’s additional fun stem from its four-player co-op, where you and three of your friends can do stupid stuff together. Aside from, maybe, Ubisoft’s Uplay launcher, the game is a gem for the platformer community.

It receives a playscore of an 8.84.

6. Hollow Knight - Voidheart Edition

Recently, there has been a growing number of games borrowing Dark Souls’ insane difficulty and ‘gothic’ style.

Of all the games coming and going, Hollow Knight stayed and proved it’s something familiar, however different. Team Cherry's Voidheart Edition is the ultimate Hollow Knight experience. It’s replete with all the free DLC issued since its vanilla release in 2017. But to label it comparable, or a spiritual successor of Dark Souls is insulting. It is not. Hollow Knight is a league of its own. Although it does have deep lore to uncover for dedicated fans.

Set in a fictional world where Bugs take control of society, you play as a nameless Hero with a sword aptly called ‘Nail’ to strike foes down.

A critically-acclaimed release; according to Push Square, Hollow Knight ““shines bright, considering its solemn presentation and challenging gameplay.” They gave it a 9 out of 10 on the PlayStation 4. The only gripe this game received is that fans wanted more from it, which was great. At least for now, we have the sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong to look forward to.

Voidheart Edition receives a playscore of 8.84.

5. Celeste

Indie games are all over the video game market; heck, most of the games in this list are Indies. Celeste, if you haven’t heard of it, developed by Matt Thorson is the pinnacle of platformers in 2018. A simple story about a girl trying to get to the top of Celeste Mountain isn’t so simple at all.

By injecting relevant themes of today’s society like mental health and accessibility in games, Celeste won numerous awards including Game of the Year. Celeste on the PlayStation 4 is exceptional. With a steady stream of hardcore triple-A titles, it stood out as a must-buy for platformer enthusiasts.

Even IGN, despite its controversial reviews, gave it a 10 out of 10. Calling it a “surprise masterpiece”, and even we can’t deny that. It was universally praised for its responsive controls, fantastic story and utterly challenging levels are the qualities needed for a compelling game in 2018.

Celeste had everything on the table. It receives a playscore of 8.89

4. Dead Cells

The concept of time and space is irrelevant in platformers. Motion Twin's Dead Cells made sure you could learn from your mistakes and maybe, mess things up again.

It’s Groundhog Day but for hardcore gamers. As a player who can’t die, repeat the process of hacking and slashing your way across a randomly generated castle. In its hybrid of Metroidvania and roguelike, Dead Cells is a welcome challenge for those masochists who want to do everything as hard as possible.

The game is well-received, especially when it comes to their organic level design. Each time you die, a different task awaits you… all procedurally-generated.

Even IGN, who before managed to plagiarize a certain content creator for its original Dead Cells review on this game, praised the game’s flexibility and beautifully-detailed levels. If you can get past the intense difficulty, you might enjoy this again… and again.

It has a playscore of 8.93.

3. INSIDE

To call INSIDE as a mere platformer is an understatement. It is, like Playdead’s previous title LIMBO, a game you should dive into without knowing too much of.

You play as a young boy trying to run away from the hands of what evils may lurk in its dystopian and somewhat ‘Orwellian’ society. And as a Platformer of sorts, you solve puzzles and experiment with various possibilities that don’t result in your brutal death.

Push Square and Thumbsticks gave this a perfect score of 10, and we can attest to that. INSIDE is strange, unsettling, and the narrative it tries to tell is even more surprising, especially with its crazy ending which we won’t spoil.

Most of the game’s best features are not even features. The amount of secrets it has in store for players is what gave it a good rating. Much like LIMBO, there is a tinge of bizarre to the journey, which we once again won’t spoil. The only concern this game had was its short game length, which at this point, is not a surprise by PLAYDEAD’s standards.

INSIDE is a pure test of quantity over quality, and it receives a playscore of 9.03.

2. Shovel Knight

At this point, anyone with a knack for gaming knows about Yacht Club's Shovel Knight. The quintessential platformer that sets a new standard for Kickstarter-funded campaigns. Inspired by numerous classic platformers, Shovel Knight has dug out of from the pile of massive games coming all around it.

ZTGD gave it a perfect score of 10, saying “... it felt like I was discovering a wonderful game from the past that I had somehow missed when growing up.”That’s the effect Shovel Knight had on the people who played it. It is reminiscent of old-school games that some veteran gamers can easily relate to.

Modern players will enjoy its simplicity. But will stay for its high replay value and massive content, that includes its DLCs which add a whole new layer of gameplay that doesn’t involve digging and hitting enemies with your shovel.

No surprise here, it has a playscore of a 9.06.

1. ASTRO BOT: Rescue Mission

That’s right, a Sony exclusive tops the list of our 10 best PlayStation 4 Platformers, and for good reasons.

Considered as the best VR Platformer out there, JapanStudio's ASTRO BOT: Rescue Mission seamlessly blends these two elements together in an effective VR journey with depth and a sense of wonder... especially when you’re trying to introduce it to a kid.

Game Informer said that this game “feels like it came out of nowhere to quietly prove that those familiar genres can feel like new experiences with the aid of virtual reality.” They gave it a 9 out of 10.

By putting together VR and platforming, it was pushed into new lengths, especially when you’re trying to revolutionize the industry. Sony managed to do so with such confidence. And with the lack of good VR titles lately, this one is a must-buy for anyone who owns a PlayStation VR. A much-needed reprieve to life’s crazy misadventures.

It receives a playscore of a 9.08
