Up to now the <a href="https://whatoplay.com/switch/best/">top Switch games</a> list is still full of Nintendo's iconic, family-friendly titles. Polish indie Studio, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/developers/rg-crew/">RG Crew</a>, hopes to make a change with the upcoming release of their psychological horror, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/switch/anthology-of-fear/">Anthology of Fear</a>, on the Switch as well as the PC.

According to their director and chief designer, Hubert Zatorski, Anthology of Fear will consist of not just one scary narrative, but three independent stories from various eras, historical or not. With three different narratives, it hopes to provide a "multidimensional" view of fear. And not just that, Anthology of Fear also hopes to provide players with unconventional solutions and diverse gameplay possibilities.

The three different stories are a struggle for survival in remote areas in 20th Century Siberia full of hunting challenges; a contemporary history which will require alienation and creative acts; and lastly, a story with the main focus on memory set in an unspecified time and location.

Hubert Zatorski also added, "Our game will be diverse and ambiguous. It won’t be any problem for fans of the series Silent Hill and Outlast to find themselves in Anthology of Fear. The same goes for titles in the style of Layers of Fear, Alan Wake or even Hunt: Showdown"

Anthology of Fear is set to release on the PC in the first quarter of 2020, with the Nintendo Switch following it a few months after.

Anthology of Fear, a psychological horror through the ages, coming to Nintendo Switch and the PC

There was a time when MMORPGs ruled. They have since been relegated to a small corner amidst explosive growth in mobile and competitive gaming. Lack of innovation and bad monetization practices (pay-to-win, loot boxes, deceptive microtransactions, etc.) are two of the many causes of the genre’s decline.

Among the handful of upcoming titles is <a href="https://embersword.com/" title="Emmber Sword official website">Ember Sword</a>, a PC MMORPG playable directly in your browser or through a PC-client, promising to fix the broken monetization system found in traditional MMOs. Developed by <a href="https://socouch.com/">So Couch Studios</a>, it integrates blockchain tech into the game’s economy giving players ownership of some in-game items.

There’s only so much we can dig up on the web about <a href="https://whatoplay.com/blockchain/ember-sword/">Ember Sword</a> so we asked So Couch Studios’ Chief Marketing Officer Sune Thorsen to give us more insight about the game and its development.

Ember Sword is one of the few blockchain games that is more than just a collectible. What were the game design hurdles in integrating blockchain into the overall MMO mechanics?

The blockchain tech we’re using has actually helped solve typical MMORPG design hurdles more than it has been a hindrance for the design. For example, keeping the end-game content interesting for hardcore players is one of the biggest challenges for MMORPGs. In Ember Sword, we reward players who participate in end-game PvP and PvE content with cosmetic items that would typically otherwise be sold through lootboxes. These cosmetics are “on-chain” items that each have a unique item history detailing the epic feats they have partaken in, they’re all probably scarce digital collectibles that exist in a finite supply, and they can freely be traded among players for the game’s premium currency; PIXEL, with us taking a small fee on these marketplace transactions.

<blockquote>
...no on-chain item in Ember Sword impacts your power and strength in the game
</blockquote>

In a traditional MMORPG design, these cosmetics would typically either be account bound or only tradeable for in-game gold. However, because we allow players to trade their cosmetics for PIXEL, players who are good at PvE and PvP can essentially earn PIXEL for free, which they can later spend on the optional monthly subscription, a pick-up pet, or other cosmetics. This is a huge incentive for players, and it solves one of the biggest MMORPG game design hurdles.

As with any technology, there are good and bad ways to implement blockchain tech in an MMORPG, but players of Ember Sword will get to experience how the tech can carve a new path forward for gameplay and monetization of Free-to-Play MMORPGs - a path without any Pay-to-Win! In fact, no on-chain item in Ember Sword impacts your power and strength in the game – but they make you look freakin’ cool, and their scarcity and item history make them true collectibles.

MMORPGs are often criticized for being time-sinks. How did you plan to keep the whole experience balanced and engaging for both hardcore and casual MMO players?

When it comes to catering to both hardcore and casual MMORPG players, the sandbox’ish game design helps a lot. Whatever you do in Ember Sword, you’re always progressing towards the next level in one of your many skills, such as woodcutting, fishing, mining, blacksmithing etc. This means even 20-30 minutes of gameplay will feel meaningful, as you’ve climbed one step closer to leveling up one of your skills.

As a casual player, you will focus on the skills that make the most sense to you, such as e.g. melee to defeat enemies, fishing and cooking so you can always eat food to replenish HP, and woodcutting so you can sell logs to other players to generate gold. Focusing on just a single weapon-type skill will allow a casual player to be able to compete with hardcore players much faster.

As a hardcore player, on the other hand, you will typically attempt to level up all your skills, including all three weapon-type skills; melee, ranged, and energy. This gives you a near-endless amount of content to explore, with thousands of hours of gameplay.

There’s also plenty of both relaxed and challenging PvE as well as high-stakes PvP content to keep both casual and hardcore players engaged.

<img src="https://cdn2.whatoplay.com/blog/interview/ember-sword-screen.jpg" alt="Ember Sword screen">

You recently published a video on the first male playable character. How many more characters can we expect? How alike or different will they be from the usual MMO staples - tank, support, thief, etc.?

The video we released shows the main male character model, and we’re working on the female counterpart right now. These are the base models that players can customize during character creation.

Ember Sword features a classless combat system, which means there are no pre-defined classes to pick from when you create your character. This gives players ultimate freedom; the equipment you decide to wear determines who and what you are, and your skill levels define which abilities you can use with each type of weapon. Want to switch from your sword and shield to a bow? Go ahead. Want to switch back to a two-handed sword? The choice is always yours.
<div class="video-responsive">
	<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ge9yYVct5J8?controls=0" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div>

Relatively speaking, how massive is the Ember Sword world? And how will player-owned lands alter the gameplay?

The world is massive! And it’s ever-changing as well, ensuring a slightly different experience every time you login.

The world is split into 4 major regions, of which you pick one as your home region during character creation. Each region consists of 3 types of territories; Kingship, Wilderness, and Outlaw.

Outlaw territories are the most dangerous and are found on the edge between two regions. These territories are home to rare resources and high level monsters, but be careful; anyone you run into will be able to attack you. It is also in these territories that you fight over the control of Outlaw camps, which reward with you a rare collectible cosmetic, and allows you to place buildings only accessible by you or your guild and friends. Anyone can destroy your camp, so watch out!

Wilderness territories are the primary PvE areas and are rich in resources, monsters, and NPCs. You can attack players from opposing regions if they wander into your region’s Wilderness areas and start collecting resources. Open-world bosses also spawn in the Wilderness (and Kingship) territories. Get to them first and slay them for rare cosmetic rewards.

Kingship territories are strictly for PvE and resource collection, NPCs, quests etc. The kingship territories are controlled by the community through a total of 1344 landowners who decide what to place on each parcel of kingship territory land; NPCs, buildings, monsters etc..

Owning a parcel of land is not at the core of the Ember Sword gameplay experience (it doesn’t give you in-game advantages, nor access to content others can’t also access), and as such is not for most players, but it IS at the very core of the world design. It’s what keeps the world fresh and interesting. We wanted to create a world that was to a large extent controlled by the community of players, and those 1344 parcels of land was what fit the size of the Ember Sword world (more Kingship land would mean the open-world would become too large).

What is So Couch Studio’s guiding principle when it comes to balancing between developing a wonderful MMO experience and monetization?

We have a strong policy against Pay-to-Win. We want PvP in Ember Sword to be skill-based and competitive, and in order to achieve that, we have to make sure you can’t buy anything for PIXEL (the game’s premium currency) that makes you stronger in-game.

Maintaining a viable MMORPG business has often meant implementing Pay-to-Win, but with our business model (selling an optional monthly subscription, a few non-Pay-to-Win consumables, and earning a fee off of trading of cosmetics between players), we can thrive as a company while fighting predatory monetization and Pay-to-Win! In large part thanks to the blockchain, which is what allows us to earn a fee from the cosmetic marketplace transactions.

How do you foresee the evolution of Ember Sword and MMORPG, in general?

Ember Sword has already attracted thousands of pre-registrations, and we’re excited to bring a new, fair, and competitive Free-to-Play gameplay experience to millions of MMORPG players.

We hope that we’ll be able to influence the MMORPG industry at large, pushing it towards fairer monetization strategies and more enticing and rewarding gameplay. Time will tell.

If anyone wants to join us on our journey, we’re more than happy to discuss Ember Sword on our Discord server: <a href="https://discord.gg/46P8rFs" title="Ember Sword Discord">https://discord.gg/46P8rFs</a>

We asked So Couch Studios’ Chief Marketing Officer Sune Thorsen to give us more insight about the game and its development.

How Ember Sword Plans to Redefine MMORPGs with Blockchain Tech

Based on Robert Kirkman’s award-winning post-apocalyptic comics, all the four seasons of <a href="https://whatoplay.com/developers/telltale-games/">Telltale Games</a>’ beloved series is up for grabs and it’s packed into one fantastic box for everyone to enjoy. Experience the story once again and make tough choices that impact the game’s endings and character interactions.

It may be a rough couple of years for Telltale’s The Walking Dead after the company’s unfortunate close. Thankfully, Skybound Games saves the day by acquiring the games and giving Clementine’s story the end it deserved.

Not only are the four seasons present, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/ps4/the-walking-dead-the-telltale-definitive-series/">The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series </a>also contains The Walking Dead: Michonne in her own solo story.

In this collection, there are over 50 hours of gameplay across 23 unique episodes, more than 10 hours of developer commentary, behind-the-scenes bonus features including concept and character art galleries, a “Return of The Walking Dead” documentary short, faithful recreations of classic menus, and a music player with over 140 musical tracks.

This Definitive Edition also includes the application across all seasons and content of “graphic black,” an art style that pays homage to The Walking Dead comics and was previously only available for THE FINAL SEASON.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series is now available for $49.99/€49.99/£39.99 as a physical boxed product at retail for PlayStation®4 and Xbox One, as well as digitally on the PlayStation®Store, Microsoft Xbox One Store, and the Epic Games store for Windows PC.

<h2>10. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/rise-of-the-tomb-raider/" title="Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox One">Rise of the Tomb Raider</a></h2>

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/developers/crystal-dynamics/">Crystal Dynamic</a>'s second entry to their Tomb Raider reboot.

It's packed with so much more tombs, as Hardcore Gamer's Adam Beck points out. But aside from numbers, it was the scope of the entire experience. Its areas are brimming with secrets and fresh "flexible" combat that all add up to an adventure that's faithful to the Indiana Jones inspiration.

For some reviewers though, like <a href="https://whatoplay.com/critics/polygon/">Polygon</a>'s Philip Kollar and <a href="https://whatoplay.com/critics/games-radar/">Games Radar</a>'s Justin Towell, it didn't exactly reinvent the wheel. The changes weren't massive and it followed closely in the path of its predecessor.

Rise's story is one thing that lets it rise up above these flaws. There's a focus on the theme of growth. We see a more fleshed out Lara Croft. A woman with empowering new courage, who is as ready to solve puzzles as she is to exchange bullets.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was a point of growth in the series, and the effects of this growth are felt on the Xbox One to this day with a playscore of 8.78.

<h2>9. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/divinity-original-sin-ii-definitive-edition/" title="Divinity Original Sin 2 Xbox One">Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition</a></h2>

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/developers/larian-studios/">Larian Studios</a>' critically acclaimed sequel to their renowned RPG series was already winning on the PC. But, when it made its entrance on the consoles in this definitive form, Original Sin 2 evolved in ways we didn't even expect.

On top of revamping the arena mode with new challenges and first-time playable characters, it also dived deeper into characters and storylines.

In fact, GameSpace.com appreciated that it was more than a simple port. It added a new Story Mode to better the experience for casual gamers, offered one of the very few split-screen multiplayers out there, and considered its layared and strategic combat one of its most compelling aspects.

While there might be some framerate drops on the console as <a href="https://whatoplay.com/critics/jeux-video/">jeuxvideo</a> and <a href="https://whatoplay.com/critics/gameblog/">gameblog</a> point out, it's still one of the most beautiful out there and it has a playscore of 8.79.

<h2>8. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/resident-evil-2/" title="Resident Evil 2 Xbox One">Resident Evil 2</a></h2>

Just like the zombies of the franchise, CAPCOM revived their 1998 horror classic and gave it its much needed modern makeover.

However much we've enjoyed the company of Claire and Leon in their original polygonal form, it's also a breath of fresh air to see them shiny, new, and with their own differing perspectives.

For <a href="https://whatoplay.com/critics/gamespot/">GameSpot</a>, the Second Scenarios allows you to see the larger campaign story with new eyes. The impact may be subtle, the tiny details and encounters make it all worth the second look.

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/critics/gamezone/">Gamezone</a> may differ, pointing out the disappointment of identical stories and inconsequential changes. However, they both went on to give the game a rating of 9. For them, the Resident Evil 2 remake doesn't just spice up the original, it takes on a life of its own, with consistent scares and smooth controls.

It has a playscore of 8.79.

<h2>7. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/inside/" title="INSIDE Xbox One">INSIDE</a></h2>

Our dive into the darkness doesn't end with CAPCOM's remake. There's plenty more of that in PlayDead's puzzle platformer about a boy navigating his Orwellian dystopia.

Released in the wake of <a href="https://whatoplay.com/developers/playdead/">Playdead</a>'s equally significant title LIMBO, INSIDE seems to have inherited all of the game's darkly charming qualities while adding even more to the mix.

Out of the forty reviews on the Xbox One, INSIDE received 10 perfect scores, and whole lot more upper 9s--all of them praising the game for its world-building, narrative, atmosphere, and overall artistic sensibility.

Getting the lowest scores from <a href="https://whatoplay.com/critics/ausgamers/">AusGamers</a> and <a href="https://whatoplay.com/critics/kanobu/">Kanobu</a> who both gave the game a 7.50, the criticisms were mostly leveled against the games' short runtime and their puzzles, which they found either too simple or too hard set for replayability. PlayDead's second step into perfecting the haunting singleplayer puzzler, it has a playscore of 8.84.

<h2>6. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/ori-and-the-blind-forest/" title="Ori and the Blind Forest Xbox One">Ori and the Blind Forest</a></h2>

Microsoft's most prized exclusives, Ori's adventures through an ethereal forest has enchanted most everyone that guided him through all of it.

The charm of Moon Studio' metroidvania platformer comes first and foremost from its presentation. It shows off the beauty of their magical forest through stages that look like tapestries of a fantastical nature--filled with glowing lights and meticulously designed obstacles.

But apart from the superficial, Ori's challenges are also tougher than they seem. TSA's Matt Wingle calls it a masterpiece citing the delicate balancing act of difficult platforming and a sense of achievement that stirs you to see the story through.

A one two punch combo of art and technical cleverness, it earns almost equal scores from both gamers and critics.

With Ori and the Will of the Wisps coming to the consoles soon, this might be the perfect time to check it out, if you haven't already. It has a playscore of 8.91.

<h2>5. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/nier-automata-become-as-gods-edition/" title="Nier Automata Xbox One">NieR: Automata - BECOME AS GODS Edition</a></h2>

When its weird existentialism in anime aesthetics that you want, you can’t go wrong with Yoko Taro's spinoff to his Drakengard series.

He was already known for his calculated strangeness and that's the direction he went for NieR: Automata. He hams it up, adjusting his signature with touches of genius in narrative and gameplay.

Although they never quite perfected the PC port, at least the Xbox One users got acquainted to the android 2B in this enhanced Become as Gods edition.

As exciting as DLCs and awesome outfits are, getting to experience the story and its myriad of endings is enough for most.

Of course, NieR doesn't claim to be perfect. There may be some debate over the game's designs--minimalist for some, drab and barren for others--and, technical issues may have been carried over. But what remains, is the mastery of Yoko Taro's storytelling that makes it rise above all that. It has a playscore of 8.96.

<h2>4. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt/" title="The Witcher 3 Xbox One">The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt</a></h2>

The third installment to <a href="https://whatoplay.com/developers/cd-projekt-red/">CD Projekt Red</a>'s has been most everywhere, topping list after list since its release on the Xbox One on 2015.

To answer what makes it an awesome singleplayer game, it's hard to point out just one aspect of its vast, colorful, medieval magic whole. At the time of its release, the scale of Witcher 3's world was unparalleled.

In their review, IGN points out the game's the fetch-heavy questing. But, set against the backdrop of Witcher's rich and expansive universe, there's always something to fall back on, whether it's exploration or their many interesting characters.

This grand scope may have led to some shortcomings in combat and leveling though, at least for Game Revolution who gave it a 7.

There might small glitches, bugs, and annoyances, according to <a href="https://whatoplay.com/critics/cocconnected/">COGconnected</a>, its triple A RPG storytelling is enough to outweigh all of them. Plus, with all the packed DLCs, it deserves the excellent praise with a playscore of 9.05.

<h2>3. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/forza-motorsport-7/" title="Forza Motorsport 7">Forza Motorsport 7</a></h2>

You could say this beloved Microsoft classic got home turf advantage, but that wouldn't do justice to Turn10's breathtaking racing game.

With every title in this franchise, they sought to create the ultimate racing experience. Forza Motorsport 7 is the closest they've ever gotten. Yet. It locks down the racing genre on the Xbox One (and especially the Xbox One X, with its 4K support.) It's not just all beauty though, it's also content.

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/critics/hardcoregamer/">Hardcore Gamer</a>'s Adam Beck weighs in again, talkiing about the variety that Motorsport 7 offers, from cars and tracks, to customizations and effects. And, for singleplayers, cogconnected delivers good news, commenting on the game's career mode that feels more streamlined than ever before.

For hardcore fans of the series, refinements are all the game needs, and Turn10 continues to deliver, with a playscore of 9.06

<h2>2. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/red-dead-redemption-2/" title="Read Dead Redemption">Red Dead Redemption 2</a></h2>

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/developers/rockstar-games/">Rockstar</a>'s long waited second entry to their wild west RPG might be an outstanding achievement on its own, it still remains at number two on both the PlayStation 4 lists, and now even on the Xbox One. Not like there's anything wrong with number two.

RDR2 has been praised left and right, especially for its enveloping open-world adventures. Video Gamer gave it a 9, for its well-realized setting made alive by its "wonderful scripting" and "stellar performances."

As far as open-world role-playing games go, RDR2 sets a whole new bar. With such a diverse and living world, GameSpew went so far as saying it's less a videogame, and more of a thing in itself that you can visit and experience on your own time.

The hype and expectations were on an all time high for this rockstar creation and it was all worth it in the end. It has a playscore of 9.2.

<h2>1. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/forza-horizon-4/" title="Forza Horizon 4">Forza Horizon 4</a></h2>

Was there ever any doubt? As much as Motorsport 7 delivers one of the best serious racing experiences, Forza Horizon 4 seems better, if only for that all-around experience.

With its absorbing free-roaming open world of Great Britain, it's less about racing than it is about driving. If its best-looking you want, Horizon 4 doesn't fall short. This might only be a few tweaks away from the beauty that was Forza Horizon 3, it still manages to one-up the previous game with more than a few interesting additions and an overhaul in graphics.

But, in addition to the thing they've been nailing year after year, its the freedom that this installment offers. Videogamer says it best: "There are no tests to take, no licences to earn; you just drive."

Its fun. It's straightforward, it knows exactly what you want in a driving simulator, and it has a playscore of 9.24

10 Best Xbox One Singleplayer Games of All Time

In this upcoming package called <a href="https://whatoplay.com/switch/assassins-creedr-the-rebel-collection/">Assassin's Creed: The Rebel Collection</a>, two of <a href="https://whatoplay.com/developers/ubisoft-montreal/">Ubisoft</a>’s acclaimed Assassin’s Creed titles make their way to the <a href="https://whatoplay.com/switch/">Nintendo Switch</a>: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed: Rogue.

Considered as one of the best Assassin’s Creed titles, engage in an epic story with its fun naval battles and the classic AC parkour mechanic. Follow the adventures of the young and brash Edward Kenway in his voyage through the Golden Age of Piracy. Meet iconic pirates such as Blackbeard and Anne Bonny in a quest to uncover the secrets of the Old Civilization.

Together with this main title, is the other Assassin’s Creed’s entry set between the events of Black Flag and III. Instead of playing as an Assassin, take control of the morally gray Templar Shay Cormack in his journey throughout America during the Seven Years War. Still boasting the same Naval gameplay Black Flag was known for, but with major improvements to controls.

These two games will be packed into one massive bundle with all their DLCs and bonus content, this includes the standalone single-player adventure of Aveline de Grandpre and Adewale’s solo journey in Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry. Basically, it’s four games into one collection.

The Rebel Collection will also take advantage of the Switch’s capabilities including Handheld Mode, HD Rumble, Touchscreen Interface, Optimized HUD, and Motion Control Aiming.

Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection will be available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch and it comes out on December 6, 2019.
