Nintendo Indie World Showcase: Full List of Unveiled Indie Games

In this video, we highlight the highest-rated of all new PlayStation 5 games, released between January and March of this year. You can find the full ranking on our page for the Best PS5 games of 2023.

8. One Piece Odyssey

We start off this list with an anime franchise that has never stopped sailing since. The power of friendship only gets stronger with each passing story arc. In Odyssey, the Strawhat Pirates adapt to the turn-based mechanics from JRPGs. This is a game built for One Piece fans. It comes with an original story that complements Luffy and the gang’s main quest. As far as fanservice goes, Odyssey didn’t give us much. It’s been criticized for its ‘safe’ approach to story and combat. Nonetheless, anyone who’s been following Oda’s long-running series can find something to enjoy here. It gets a playscore of 7.57

7. Forspoken

It’s sad to see a game developed by talented people go to waste. Forspoken’s ambitious design was its first mistake. It was just too much for everyone working on the game, and the result was a middling isekai experience. While the game does offer fun moments, notably in its stylish real-time combat, its flaws are all over the place. The story isn’t engaging, the protagonist doesn’t stop talking, and its open-world is devoid of activity. It was a commercial flop, but it doesn’t mean that it’s a bad game. It just didn’t live up to everyone’s expectations.

6. Wild Hearts

EA’s attempt at a Monster Hunter clone was a welcome surprise for fans of CAPCOM’s franchise. Wild Hearts did one important thing that the MH series hasn’t done yet: Crossplay. That means you’ll save a lot of time and money playing with friends on whatever platform you have. Another strong feature from Wild Hearts is its Karakuri system. Building gadgets and gizmos in a snap changes the feel of the multiplayer. This offers a dynamic gameplay experience when hunting monsters. But with all these improvements, most of the game follows the exact monster-hunting formula. It still has a lot of time to cook, and its potential isn’t squandered yet. A playscore of 7.75.

5. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Moving away from their traditional souls-like formula, the guys behind Nioh pay homage to FromSoftware’s Sekiro. What it achieved was something familiar, yet unique. The parrying system isn’t as crisp as its inspiration, but it’s one of the rare games to fully scratch that Sekiro itch. Its Chinese setting also offers something interesting. Anyone deep into Chinese history might recognize some of the warriors. In Wo Long, they’re given a fantasy twist. Overall, with a playscore of 7.97, Wo Long is a decent action RPG that has its own identity, but fails to do more than that.

4. Hogwarts Legacy

The Wizarding World continues and it was a commercial success. Hogwarts Legacy is what everyone wished for since the first Harry Potter movie: a full-fledged video game where you can be a student at Hogwarts. Casting spells, doing Herbology, and exploring the megastructure that is Hogwarts is a fantastic experience. Hogwarts Legacy truly captures what it’s like to live in this bizarre yet beautiful magical world. There’s no word on a DLC yet, but players on last-gen consoles like the PS4 and Switch are looking forward to the release this year.

3. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II

The sequel to Square Enix’s RPG with eight characters, each telling their own story. It’s a huge improvement from the original, it improved the series’ turn-based combat, as well as its party system. That means the character interactions are more natural than ever. It’s evident they spent a lot of time in the writing department with each individual’s fascinating backstories. Apart from that, its 2.5D visual style has also been polished, adding more life to its gorgeous and massive world.

2. Dead Space (2023)

Isaac Clarke returns, and so are the terrifying Necromorphs. Dead Space Remake proves that there’s still a place for survival horror in the modern gaming market. With improved lighting, atmosphere, and gameplay, everything inside the USG Ishimura is a claustrophobic lovecraftian nightmare. There’s always fear lurking in every corner, so it’s best you prepare your plasma cutter. With its success, let’s hope we’ll see a remake of the next two games of the series!

1. Resident Evil 4 (2023)

Two survival horror classics are a major success this year. Resident Evil 4 takes the cake as the strongest contender for Game of the Year with its impressive 1:1 adaptation of the original. Not only is it faithful to its source material, it adds a few details that make Leon and Ashley’s journey worthwhile. From seamless exploration, tight combat, and effective scares, RE4 is a fantastic return for CAPCOM’s long-running horror series. Just recently, a free DLC added The Mercenaries update. Bringing in a fresh yet familiar arcade goodness as breathing room away from the main campaign.

If you’re afraid of the deep water, tread carefully.

6. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II

The sequel to the multinarrative RPG with eight characters telling the story. You won’t have to play the first game since it’s a whole new story with fresh faces, each with new troubled pasts to uncover. It’s the right mix of horror, action, and comedy. Scoring high 9s and 10s, this Remake pushes what CAPCOM can do with their classic titles. From improved combat, seamless mission design, and terrifying atmosphere. It’s a culmination of all things great about the original RE4, and made even better with surprises packed in every corner. The future of the series looks great, and we can’t wait for the RE5 Remake in the future.

Top 10 New PC Games of 2023 (First quarter)

Blooming Business: Casino, a game where anthropomorphic characters gather in a casino, gets a launch date.

Indie game developer Homo Ludens and publisher Curve Games have confirmed that Blooming Business: Casino will drop on May 23. The game will be available for PC gaming enthusiasts who love sim management games.

In Blooming Business: Casino, players become budding tycoons. Their goal is to revive a run-down casino and ensure the business gets maximum profit. This means they also need to entertain their clients, arrest troublemakers, and manage bartending employees, to name a few.

But creators from Homo Ludens said they want to set their project apart from typical casino-themed games. It focuses on stories every time you play, said Paul Blachère, Creative Director at Homo Ludens.

The French-based game developer revealed that players could expect various story-driven interactions. These include "satirical narrative twists" and backstories of each character they meet.

We're not trying to simulate the casino per se as we're trying to emulate the idea of (running a) casino, Blachère added. Homo Ludens also promised to introduce a refreshing take on the management simulation genre with Blooming Business: Casino. And then Las Vegas, it's just a colorful place. And a lot of things happen there, said Blachère.

On top of its main campaign, Blooming Business: Casino will allow gamers to play it in sandbox mode. The sandbox mode contains two options, the creative and endless modes.

Unlike the campaign, players can customize casino types, items, decorations, and casino games when playing the sandbox mode, developers said.

Development for Blooming Business: Casino spanned roughly two years. Homo Ludens had opened multiple demos and playtests before announcing the game's release date.

Indie Sim Blooming Business: Casino Gets May 23 Release

Endless Dungeon fans will have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on the highly anticipated game. A month before its expected launch, developers from Amplitude Studios announced that they would delay Endless Dungeon's debut.

Instead of this May 18, the Paris-based studio decided to do an October release. In a press release, Amplitude said the upcoming game would head to PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles on October 19. Its Nintendo Switch version will come out later, the details of which have yet to be revealed.

Romain de Waubert, General Manager and CCO of Amplitude Studios, said they decided to have more time to polish the game. We want to ensure we have time for the game to reach its full potential, the Amplitude executive wrote. According to de Waubert, player feedback helped them reevaluate their decision to do a May launch for the game. The feedback we've received across our OpenDev sessions so far has proved to us that we truly have something special on our hands, he explained.

Amplitude has also provided a more detailed explanation in a separate blog published on their official website.

Associate Producer Antoine Ducharme revealed several reasons behind the postponement of Endless Dungeon's launch. These included the need for improvements in Meta Progression, Economy, Balancing, and Multiplayer mode. Ducharme also said they would spend the coming months addressing bugs.

Ride Makes History as it Races to Next-Gen Consoles for 5th Installment

Christmas came early for fans of the popular "My Little Pony"-inspired platform fighter Them's Fightin' Herds. Indie game developer Mane6, on April 12, dropped its second downloadable content (DLC) for Them's Fightin' Herd. The bundle contains not only a new character but also a brand new stage as well.

Publisher Modus Games announced that players can now get their hands on Stronghoof the Reindeer. Stronghoof is the ninth character to join Them's Fightin' Herds. As a snow-loving ungulate, he possesses ice-based attacks, as developers described. Stronghoof also has a sidekick, a winter sprite named Vetr.

Players can get Stronghoof as a standalone item for £4.99. They may also have him by buying the game's Season 1 Pass. The current pass contains four additional characters, with Stronghoof being the second.

Aside from a new character, fans of Them's Fightin' Herds would also be delighted to know that the latest DLC contains a new stage called the Reine Ramparts.

Them's Fightin' Herds was first launched for PC in 2020. The then nine-member team of Mane6 teamed up with renowned animator and writer Lauren Faust to develop the game's character designs.

In 2021, developers ported it to Linux and macOS. But due to the game's popularity, Mane6 expanded it further to include consoles.

Them's Fightin' Herd Releases 2nd DLC Featuring New Playable Reindeer Character

Floating Islands of Nucifera, an indie shopkeeping game that takes players into the skies, got an Early Access launch.Odooh Games, a one-person development team, announced that Floating Islands of Nucifera went live on April 11 for PC devices. An Xbox version is expected before 2023 ends, the developer added.

The Nebraska-based studio estimated that the Early Access mode for the Floating Islands of Nucifera would last up to a year and a half. My hope is that all the work I've put into this game so far is enough to convey its potential for the full release, it said.

Floating Islands of Nucifera’s target release date was February 2022. Citing "extensive work needed," the developer decided to postpone its launch. The game is an open-world, shopkeeping game that takes place in the titular fantasy world of Nucifera. Its main story campaign involves the protagonist's quest to rebuild their family legacy, including a business, in the skies.

Players control Rosanna, the daughter of an esteemed merchant and wizard, who sets sail for Nucifera. Aside from shopkeeping, the game features other elements. These included open-world exploration and turn-based strategic combat.

Odooh Games first designed Floating Islands of Nucifera as a shopkeeper game for virtual reality (VR). However, the team later decided the genre would be better suited for PC.

After developing two shopkeep games for VR, I realized the shopkeep game genre is better off for PC, the developer explained. In the meantime, Odooh Games has promised to deliver more content in the coming weeks. According to the developer, they planned on rolling out two major updates. As of now, the game is playable with some story progression, and there are a lot more features to come. I will also add features based on the community's suggestions, it added. / ###

Indie Game 'Floating Islands of Nucifera' Takes Players to the Skies in Early Access Launch

Developers of the Scottish-themed colony builder Clanfolk just launched their latest major update. Hooded Horse and MinMax Games confirmed that "Hunters and Hunted" for Clanfolk went live on April 11. "Hunters and Hunted" is the game's 10th content update since its Early Access launch last year.

As its title suggests, players can expect an upgraded hunting experience. It also highlighted hunting as a "crucial part in 14th-century Scottish highlands," developers said.

Andrew Hume of MinMax Games said it took them "10 intense weeks" to design and release the latest update for Clanfolk. I am thrilled to get this update moved to the default branch, Hume wrote on Steam. He said they modified the Sneak, Movement, Visibility, and Flee Task mechanics. Developers also added a new task called "Finish Off," which kills downed animals without firing more arrows. In Hunters and Hunted, players can also hunt down more animals, like migratory deer. They can spot these critters at the map's edges, MinMax Games said.

The newest update also brings new wildlife like foxes, rabbits, and wolves. Wolves were designed to "compete for food," according to Hume. They can also kill deer and "steal livestock that strays too far from the village." Wolves can also attack humans, but only if they are wounded or hungry.

Clanfolk also brought a new addition to the game, a deerhound. Deerhounds can help players protect their territories from wolves and sneaky foxes.

Deerhounds were the go-to companion in 1300's Scotland, explained Hume, who revealed that his Standard Poodle was the inspiration. They were an essential hunting tool, they could protect the homestead, and were also just fun to cuddle, he added.

In the meantime, MinMax Games said players could expect more content updates in the coming weeks. Clanfolk launched via Early Access on PCs in July 2022. The game received praise from gamers, who noted its environment. Others even compared it to the hit sci-fi colony builder Rimworld, but it was more peaceful and relaxed.

Clanfolk received an aggregate gamer score of 9.3, based on 1,570 reviews. ###
