Sony may have taken over June with the announce of the PlayStation 5, but now Microsoft is gearing up for the launch of the Xbox Series X. Xbox has released a thorough breakdown of what they promise to bring with their next generation of gaming, and it looks like they’re prioritizing the idea of giving players a choice.

In a recent post on Xbox.com, head of Xbox Phil Spencer writes that the brand won’t force players into the next generation. He writes:

We want every Xbox player to play all the new games from Xbox Game Studios. That’s why Xbox Game Studios titles we release in the next couple of years—like Halo Infinite—will be available and play great on Xbox Series X and Xbox One. We won’t force you to upgrade to Xbox Series X at launch to play Xbox exclusives.

This should come as great news for anyone who is still on the fence about buying a new console. With PlayStation 5 already announcing several exclusives, it’s great that Xbox One owners will still be able to try out the newer titles that come out. We can’t really say the same for the PS5 yet.

Microsoft also promises backwards compatibility with the Series X. On launch, players will have access to games across four generations of consoles. With the PS5 said to focus on ‘moving forward’ rather than making backwards compatibility an option, this is definitely a pro for the Xbox console

The Xbox Games Showcase is scheduled to take place on July 23. In the meantime, you can check out our running list of Upcoming Xbox Series X Games.

With the latest breakdown what Xbox Series X will bring, it looks like Microsoft is prioritizing the idea of giving players a choice.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin was already revealed in last year's E3, with a story revolving around the titular character who uses ordinary farm tools and the magic of the "divine raiment" to take down the demonic beasts in a side-scrolling platform style.

Visually, the game looks inviting and will probably entice fans of Japan's unique culture and mythology.

XSEED Games is currently offering two retail additions for the PS4 and Nintendo Switch. One is a standard release priced at $39.99, and a special "Divine Edition" priced at $59.99.

Pre-orders of these physical editions are already available at the XSEED Games Store and as well as other retailers which are listed in their official website.

No word yet on when pre-orders for the Digital Edition will open.

The iOS has always been a breeding ground for promising new games. See all the free-to-play titles released for the platform so far.

15. Dadish

Just barely making it to our halfway finalists right after Father's day, this cartoon root crop is definitely a runner for Dad of the year. From indie developer Thomas Young, this game brings us to a colorful retro pixel world filled with puzzles, danger, and some rad kids too cool for their radish dad. With Dadish, you'll be drawn in by their engaging atmosphere. But, what will make you stay, is the game's consistent serving of cute levels, fun dialog, and its message of health food vs fast food. Better than any boring PSA, it gets a playscore of 8.3

14. Forza Street

Forza is a name all car enthusiasts will recognize. After its debut on the Android last year, Microsoft has finally brought their mobile racer to the iOS. Focusing on the beauty of street racing, Forza Street has an amazing selection of cars, all of which you can use for the game's many events. Race through the gorgeous city streets and rack up infamy with win after win. As Microsoft's first dive into mobile gaming, the game still suffers from a few balance issues. But, if you're a fan of the series and you're looking for a worthy portable counterpart, this will do, with a playscore of 8.31

13. Evil Hunter Tycoon

Tycoon Games are usually built upon a reality simulation, but this game makes an attempt at doing things differently, and it looks like it paid off. Crafted in classic pixel fashion, you will get to play the role of heading a town full of brave hunters. Your task is to build the town from the ground up, restore it to its former glory, and give your hunters a safe space to train for the big fight against the Dark Lord. Nailing the elements of city management in a fantasy-based RPG style, it receives a playscore of 8.31

12. Disney Sorcerer's Arena

Disney makes a throwback to our collective childhood with this turn-based RPG title. In Sorcerer's Arena, meet your favorite characters from Disney's treasure trove of movies and watch them duke it out in the real-time PVP battlefield. Whether it's Mickey Mouse in his iconic wizard's hat, or going infinity and beyond with Buzz Lightyear, there's plenty of action here for all the fans of Disney's legendary movies. As a free Disney game, there will be some pricey in-app purchases to watch out for though. It has a playscore of 8.31

11. LEGO® Legacy: Heroes Unboxed

This is far from LEGO's first rodeo on the mobile, but it seems they're going the path of many big names in the genre. While they're usually taking licenses from other big names, this game takes on a more original flavor. Using more generic LEGO characters in quirky costumes and styles, create your own party of adventurers and help through wave after wave of turn-based combat. With RPG elements too, you'll be able to collect new heroes, level them up, and watch them grow to be fearsome warriors in every field of battle. It has a playscore of 8.33

10. Untold RPG

This game may require more reading than your usual games. A text-based RPG, Untold may feel at first like your run of the mill choose your own adventure. However, its many features speak for itself, creating a full-on role-playing experience using only the text on a screen. Go on a fantastic adventure in your imagination, complete with combat, inventory management, and a wide array of characters to get to know throughout an inviting storyline. It might not be as flashy as other games maybe, but it shows the power that words combined with your creativity can hold. It has a playscore of 8.35

9. Men in Black: Galaxy Defenders

Sony Pictures tie-in to the iconic film franchise is an on-rails shooter that's determined to bring us back to the arcade games we used to love. In every stage, you'll find a few worthy aliens to blast. Take your aim, with whatever gun the stage requires, and in barely a minute, you'll be ready for the next one. Precision isn't exactly the mobile's cup of tea, so there are some challenges in the way, despite the relative ease of its stages. With bonus challenges and pretty sweet graphics to boot, it's still worth our while with a score of 8.38

8. Cryptract

Making its debut on the Japanese mobile market and the PlayStation, it was about time that the West get their taste of this fantastic JRPG--and it seems the localization was well worth it. While it offers a bit less on the side of flair, it manages to balance that off with its "never-ending" storyline, a decent amount of content, and, most of all, its balanced gacha system. Despite being a free to play the game, it's the combination of these three features that give Cryptract its premium feel. Take your pick from their selection of characters and watch them evolve into powerful heroes. It gets a score of 8.39

7. War Tortoise 2

In this world engulfed in never-ending conflict, the War Tortoise is the artillery of choice. This game is no ordinary game. While it has a lot of exploration, it also has some incremental shooting elements that balance it all out, making it a perfect haven for casual gamers on the smartphone. Even as a free game, it still has a decent money generation system that won't bore players in the grind to the top. Topping all that with some gorgeous graphics, it definitely earned its playscore of 8.49

6. Knighthood

In this online strategy, chivalry is dead and knighthood is all about bringing down the monsters that plague the land. From the makers of Candy Crush, King has been moving forward from their signature brand of match-three puzzle making. Their move towards more complex gameplay is looking pretty good if this game is any indication. Presented in cute 3D cartoon style, play the role of the Rage Knight, and battle an array of magical creatures in your own customizable style. Join guilds, upgrade your armory, and fight your way through the top with a playscore of 8.56

5. Kick-flight

A heavy game with a heavy dose of action. This kind of beautiful presentation and fast-paced gameplay may come with a price, it's definitely not charging it on your wallets. If your phone can take the brunt of its graphics and memory requirements, this free game will give you hours of entertainment, letting you fly around their spacious arenas for a burst of real-time 4v4 combat. Sharpen your flight skills and time your attacks to soar through the leaderboards in no time. Addictive and fun for all types of players, it has clearly earned its playscore of 8.59

4. Grand Mountain Adventure

Coming out on the mobile earlier this year, this game has given us the opportunity to enjoy that snowy skiing holiday all year long. And, aside from ads and microtransactions, for pretty much no cost. Sure, you won't have that chilly weather to enjoy and the cute outfits that come with it. But, it also spares your knees from all that tension. Take on the rolling hills of the alps and discover the challenges that lie under a few feet of snow. A little heavy on the graphics for a simple game, it's definitely worth it for fans of the sport, even without the full experience. It has a playscore of 8.61

3. Magic: ManaStrike

Clash Royale is getting some competition from the world of Magic. Putting their own spin on SUPERCELL's formula, this game is here to show all of us who does card game mechanics right. Pulling from the roster of powerful sorcerers from the Magic universe, you'll get to show off your strategy skills in the colorful chaos of their real-time PVP battles. Thanks to the deep source material, strategy and card game fans will find a lot in this game to work with. Especially with its top tier presentation reeling in veterans, as well as first-time players. It gets a playscore of 8.64

2. KartRider Rush+

While KartRider: Drift is already lined for the PC and Consoles sometime soon, Nexon gives us our first taste with this portable version. Presentation is one of this game’s strong suits, with its lively environments populated by a lineup of adorable racers. Backing up style with substance, Rush also has a variety of game modes on offer. Do it clean in the straightforward Speed Race, or jump back to classic kart racing with the mayhem of item races. If you're careful against those pricey cars, you might enjoy this free racer with a score of 8.68

1. Legend of Runeterra

Riot has been on top of the gaming scene these days. With Valorant ruling the FPS scene, their new card game is also giving Blizzard's Hearthstone a run for their money. Siphoning their LOL numbers to a whole new genre, LOR is their own take on the collectible card game, set in the same League universe. The nexus is making a return, and its gameplay is rife with action-packed scenes of dynamic turns, exciting spells, and champion upgrades. With the same high-quality products that their other games have, Riot has successfully created a card game that's fun, even when you're losing. It gets a playscore of 8.9

While the game deals with serious themes involving family legacy under Japan’s criminal underbelly, it also goes overboard with its amount of absurd mini-games. 5’s greatest improvement is in its impressive amount of content as well. Players can now explore 5 different locales all while extending the influence of your badassery through real-time brawler combat.

It’s a fantastic Remaster that truly captures Japan’s culture with style and charm. It receives a playscore of 8.70

9. HUNTDOWN

Ranked Number 13 on our Top 25 PlayStation 4 Co-op Games, this gritty, neon-lit 80s cityscape is in need of help. This retro-futuristic platformer from Easy Trigger Games lets players take control of a one-armed character armed to the teeth and lay waste to this dystopian timeline.

Players familiar with Contra and Metal Slug’s side-scrolling gameplay would definitely put this game on their wishlist. Not to mention it encourages players to play with a friend. Its local 2-player co-op support can let you invite a friend as you run, jump, and take cover in its chaotic future. It has a playscore of 8.72

8. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

With Half Life Alyx taking the crown for being the best VR game this year, there’s also the return of the famed zombie franchise, Walking Dead, into the gaming world. This Virtual Reality Walking Dead experience is also considered as one of the strongest VR games so far.

Set in a flooded and dilapidated New Orleans, play as a lowly protagonist caught in a crossfire between warring factions. The undead threat is still at large, but focusing on survival is the game’s biggest priority. Explore this god-forsaken hellhole and utilize a variety of weapons such as shotguns, rifles, and more to make it to the next day.

As a VR title, its immersive gore can let players impale zombies and brutalize any opponent caught in their hands. It receives a playscore of 8.77

7. Nioh 2

Ghost of Tsushima isn’t the only samurai game we’re getting this year. The first half of 2020 has Nioh’s latest sequel. Set years before the events of the original game, this next chapter centers around a player-created protagonist with customizable Yokai skills.

For fans of hybrid hack and slash RPGs with Japanese settings, Nioh 2 delivers with more impressive set pieces and challenging boss battles that could rival the Souls series. And speaking of the Souls series, Nioh 2 includes a multiplayer mode where you can invite up to three players in crazy coop fashion.

The game is exclusively available for the PlayStation 4, but with the state of gaming nowadays, expect a PC release soon! A DLC is slated to come out this month as well. Nioh 2 receives a playscore of 8.80

6. The Last Of Us Part II

Naughty Dog’s latest sequel to their beloved post-apocalyptic drama sent waves of controversy all around the internet. Despite the hate, the game remains successful and it’s one of the PlayStation 4’s best-selling titles since God of War and Uncharted.

Part II continues Ellie and Joel’s journey in this dystopian nightmare where the mutated monsters now roam barren America. Praised for its impressive gameplay and breathtaking visuals, Naughty Dog isn’t holding back the talents of their team of developers… amidst the company’s labor issues.

The story may not appease longtime fans of the series, but the harrowing consequences of humanity’s flaws are something this game wants players to see. It receives a playscore of 8.82

5. DOOM Eternal

Id Software adds a new chapter to the galactic badass in his quest to eliminate the Demon threat. A franchise built around splitting open demonic heads, Doom Eternal is just the kind of game where you live the ultimate fantasy of being a demon slayer without the cheesy dialogue and cute anime waifus.

The forces of evil are now taking over Planet Earth and it’s up to the legendary Doomguy to clean them up. While it is purely single player, this sequel continues to add more content to their multiplayer modes including Invasions. The only crime Eternal did was removing Deathmatch, but that’s beside the point… Eternal is still the DOOM game we all knew and loved and it’s still brutal as hell. A playscore of 8.87

4. Streets Of Rage 4

Ranked Number 5 on our 25 Best PlayStation 4 Coop games. A game that almost took 3 decades to get a sequel.

Streets Of Rage 4 is a return to form from their classic side-scrolling adventures. Choose to play as Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, Flloyd or Cherry Hunter!

Combining the new and the old, this cult classic from SEGA continues the beloved beat ‘em up craze. It’s also not a Streets Of Rage title without the much-awaited coop mode. It’s even more fun to play this with friends! Take back the streets with up to 4 local co-op fun, OR go online with up to 2 players. A playscore of 8.92

3. Dreams

Media Molecule’s ambitious new IP might pave the way for the future of user-generated gaming communities. LittleBigPlanet did just the same, but with a few limitations due to some technical stuff. In Dreams, players create their own levels with an almost limitless amount of support. This includes creating fully-fledged projects with their own set of mechanics, assets, sculptures, music, and art. It encourages the young and old to make their own levels, be it comical, absurd or thematic.

There is a single-player mode available for those who simply want to dive in and enjoy the game’s sense of wonder, but doing just that doesn’t give Dreams justice. It is a surreal playground that lives up to its name and it is a haven of passionate players with a knack for creativity. A playscore of 9.02

2. Final Fantasy VII Remake

The most awaited JRPG that took 5 years in development. This grand remake rebuilds the iconic stories of Cloud Strife and friends as they stop an evil corporation from tearing their planet apart.

This Remake only covers the first few hours of the 1997 original, particularly the Midgar section… but don’t fret, this Part One of the Saga has tons of things in store for new and old fans of the series.

Battle Shinra goons with the game’s revamped real-time battle system. Cloud and his eco-terrorist buddies now look better with realistic visuals. Switch between three characters on the fly and let the battles begin. It receives a playscore of 9.16

1. Persona 5 Royal

The Phantom Thieves have stolen our hearts once again in their stylish return to the PlayStation 4. This definitive Persona 5 experience features a ton of new content even for those who played the original. Joker and his gang continue to reform society with anime swag.

In Royal, new music, characters, and a whole new Palace awaits the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. In addition to that, a variety of quality of life improvements make the game more accessible to fresh players.

It’s hailed as one of the best JRPGs in recent time and ATLUS’ crowning jewel. Sorry, SMT fans. It receives a playscore of 9.56

Here are the Runners Up:

Resident Evil 3 Remake

Rebuilt from the ground up using CAPCOM’s powerful RE Engine, Jill Valentine goes face to face with the iconic Nemesis in Raccoon City. The game is short and the amount of cut content bummed RE fans, however, Jill and Claire’s characters are the game’s best feature. A playscore of 8.56

Two Point Hospital

They say laughter is the best medicine. Creating your own Medical Facility comes with a price. This simulation game is not the kind you’d play if you’re looking for some true to life medical experience. Engage in fun and humorous treatment from patients in different walks of life. A playscore of 8.49

Granblue Fantasy Versus

From Browser Game to Fighting Game on the Console. Versus improves the Granblue Fantasy experience with high-quality art, captivating sound design, and an ever-expanding game system. A playscore of 8.39

The Room VR: Dark Matter

There’s no denying Horror Games and VR work well together. Fireproof Games expands their point and click puzzle games into VR territory with this tantalizing new chapter of their Room series. A playscore of 8.37

Trials Of Mana

A full-fledged 3D remake of the 1995 JRPG classic. Harness the power of Mana and lead a ragtag group of hopeful characters in their quest to save the world from imminent doom. A playscore of 8.37

We don’t know when the next big Overwatch event is going to be, but Blizzard is keeping players busy with this new Maestro challenge for hero Sigma.

Like previous events, you have to play to earn the 3 different cosmetics for Sigma in the game. 3 wins get you the player icon, 6 will get a new emote, and 9 will get you the Legendary skin: Maestro Sigma.

I have to say, with Sigma basically being bald for all of his other skins in the game, he really looks great with a full head of hair, a tux, and shoes. Who says you can’t be classy when it comes to these team-based first-person shooters?

Besides all the Sigma stuff, Twitch streamers are also being given the option to win some new sprays featuring characters playing musical instruments. Watching 2 hours gets you one spray, 4 hours gets you 2, and 6 hours gets you 3.

With such an emphasis on music for this short event, Overwatch is also promoting a soundtrack album called Overwatch: Cities & Countries and it includes all the themes for the maps in the game. To check that out, you can go to PlayOverwatch.com/music.

While we don’t know when the next event it coming for Overwatch, this is sure to keep players grinding for something as they wait. Hopefully, we get the announcement for Summer Games 2020 soon.

The Maestro Challenge for Sigma is now live and will last until July 27. Overwatch is available on Xbox One, PS4, Switch and PC.

Besides the release of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Ubisoft is gearing up for the return of one of their other larger franchises, Far Cry. The cinematic trailer for Far Cry 6 has just been released, and it reveals a fascist villain played by none other than Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad).

Here’s the official description as well:

ABOUT FAR CRY 6: In Far Cry® 6, players are immersed in the adrenaline-filled, chaotic world of a modern-day guerrilla revolution. Welcome to Yara, a tropical paradise frozen in time. As dictator of Yara, Anton Castillo is intent on restoring his nation back to its former glory by any means, with his son, Diego, following in his bloody footsteps. Become a guerrilla fighter and burn their regime to the ground.

This time, players get to take control of lead character Dani Rojas as he attempts to bring down the dictatorship of Anton Castillo. The setting is the capital cit of Esperanza which boasts to be ‘the most expansive Far Cry playground to date.’ Go underground and attack the governments with horses, tanks, or whatever you can find in your arsenal.

The Far Cry franchise is probably best known for its villains, and it’s great that they managed to get Esposito in the role. If you recall, one of the series’ most iconic villains, Vaas, is played by Michael Mando—the same guy who plays Gus Fring’s double agent Nacho in Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul.

Also worth noting is that the dictator’s son, Diego, is also being played by Coco star Anthony Gonzalez.

Far Cry 6 is set to come out on Feb. 18, 2021 and will be available for PC, Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series X, and PS5.

The PlayStation 5 is set to come out later this year, and the reveal had come with an announcement of a bunch of games, one of them being Insomniac’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. While we don’t have a release date for the game yet, Sony has decided to give us a look at the box art for the highly-anticipated game.

Check it out:

As you can see, Insomniac is deciding to go minimalist with the cover, with Miles posing in front of a plain dark background. When you look at the first Spider-Man game, it simply has Spidey poised in front of a red wall. Miles can be seen using his ‘stinger’ power in the cover; and the faded look of his feet may pass for his invisibility powers.

With some wondering where Peter Parker has gone, it’s worth noting that Miles Morales will serve as a spinoff of the Spider-Man franchise. Though Miles is getting his own game, the main story with Peter Parker is still very much in the works.

After the first game, we still have a lot of villains to go through, from Green Goblin to Venom. Let’s just hope that Insomniac is going to give Miles his own flavor of gameplay to set him aside from Peter’s franchise.

Box Art for Spider-Man: Miles Morales Revealed by PlayStation

It’s no mystery that the PlayStation 4 has gotten the upper hand when it comes to exclusives. Xbox players can’t check out great games like God of War, The Last of Us, or Spider-Man; but Microsoft could be planning to turn the tables soon enough.

According to The Information, sources have revealed that Microsoft could be planning on purchasing WB Games.

WB holds the rights to several big IP from NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat to the Batman: Arkham games. Other titles include Harry Potter as well as Lord of the Rings. If Microsoft gets a hold of the studio, it’s very likely that they’ll have pretty highly-anticipated exclusives when it comes to the Xbox Series X.

While this should worry a lot of gamers now, it doesn’t seem like there’s any rush for WB Games to be sold. If anything, Microsoft is only one of several companies that want the studio; Activision Blizzard, Take-Two Interactive, and EA are said to be eyeing WB Studios as well.

Personally, the latter three may be the better options as there are a lot of gamers who aren’t willing to buy a whole new console just to play the next Arkham title. Maybe Microsoft would be more lenient when it comes to the more popular titles.

A purchase of WB Games hasn’t been confirmed, but the Xbox Series X and PS5 are set to launch sometime later this year. For more games, you can check out our respective lists for Upcoming PS5 Games and Upcoming Xbox Series X Games.

Microsoft buying the rights to WB series like Batman: Arkham and Mortal Kombat could mean big things for their next-gen console.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning Gets New Announce Trailer

With Kingdom Rush Frontiers already on the Switch, Ironhide Studios has primed the platform for more releases of their long-running tower defense series — the latest of which being the original title, Kingdom Rush available this July 31.

Check out the official trailer below:

Kingdom Rush first released on the iOS back in 2011, garnering rave reviews from both critics and gamers. Now, with its move to the Switch, the almost decade-old tower-defense has been fully optimized for the Nintendo console.

Not only did it receive a full high-definition overhaul, but the control scheme has also been adjusted to fit the Joy Con system.

Content-wise, there are only a few additions that set it apart from the iOS version. Namely a few new monster types and achievements. But, that probably won't matter much in a game that's already lauded for its content and variety.

Kingdom Rush is also available on the Android, iOS, and PC.
