25. World of Final Fantasy Maxima

Nothing like a familiar name to start us off. While this isn't one of their classic titles, it's still a charming take on their age-old JRPG formula. Put yourself in the shoes of two siblings as they go on a journey around a mysterious land in search of lost memories. See some of your favorite Final Fantasy characters in this story fit for small adventurers. It has a playscore of 8.2

24. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Koji Igarashi is best known for creating Castlevania: Symphony of the Night which reinvigorated the series with nonlinear gameplay and the introduction of RPG elements. With the help of Kickstarter and a lot of feedback, he finally made his return with this new masterpiece. Customize your skills depending on your playstyle, and help the cursed Miriam find her way up the evil castle. It has a playscore of 8.23

23. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered

Just before the release of the Final Fantasy VII remake, we had this. No, it's not a full remake of a title we once loved, but it's the perfect way for new fans to get their first contact of a game first released in 1999. It may arguably be a shoddily done remaster, but it still deserves some credit for bringing back a game that was seemingly forgotten in the old gen. It receives a playscore of 8.26

22. Children of Morta

Breaking the convention of having one single character, 11bit Studios' RPG let you play an entire family. It’s a rogue-lite game where you go hacking and slashing through an ever-changing dungeon filled with monsters and mayhem. Despite the monstrosity, it always keeps up with the family-friendly feel with themes of love and hope. As they say, a family that fights together stays together. It has a score of 8.26

21. Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen

The definitive Dragon’s Dogma experience. Dive into their fantasy world that's struggling to fight against the looming darkness. This edition also brings together all of the game's previous DLCs and more to create the best experience yet. It has a playscore of 8.29

20. Indivisible

An ode to the Japanese RPG, Valkyrie Profile, Lab Zero Games' Metroidvania action RPG is a quirky but delicately mixed fusion of a lot of things. Follow their main character, Anha, as she embarks on a global quest to trace the roots of her power. While it wears its inspirations on its sleeve, Indivisible has plenty of its masterful strokes embedded in their lush, ancient world. It has a playscore of 8.29

19. Valkyria Chronicles 4

Released in 2018, this fourth installment of the Valkyria Chronicles saga isn't news to fans of the genre. But, what made it earn its spot here on the list is how it returned to its roots in presentation and gameplay. Returning with new characters in the same cel-shaded graphics, dive into the tragedies of the way with the game's addictive turn-based combat and tactical freedom. It has a playscore of 8.31

18. Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark

Something a little more recent is this title from 6 Eyes Studio. This game is also a turn-based RPG that JRPG fans will also enjoy. Set in a medieval steampunk universe, control your own group of customizable Arbiters who are responsible for fighting off evil and corruption. With a variety of classes and an array of items, you'll be able to personalize your strategy throughout this fantasy journey. An indie tactical RPG gem, it gets a score of 8.35

17. Final Fantasy XV

The remaster of Final Fantasy VII hasn't quite reached the Xbox One yet, but those on the Microsoft console makes do with this gorgeous entry, 10 years in the making. Still one of the biggest open-world experiences from the series yet, follow Prince Noctis as he goes on a quest to rescue the Crystal, defeat Niflheim, and reclaim his throne. Get lost on a crystal-laden quest, with a playscore of 8.35

16. Stardew Valley

Far from the combat and adventure-filled titles, Stardew Valley is an RPG that combines quests, crafting, and resource-finding into one quaint, farmlife adventure. A labor of love by one man team, Eric Barone, it was his own answer to what Harvest Moon lacked, combining it with mechanics from Animal Crossing, Rune Factory, and Minecraft. As a result, we got the ultimate farmlife experience. From crops, animals, and marriage, to crafting, combat, quests, and a playscore of 8.4

15. The Outer Worlds

The latest RPG from Obsidian Entertainment has all the markings of their previous hits. Taking players to an alternate future controlled by megacorporations, it has that familiar sci-fi setting that fans of Fallout: New Vegas loved. Add that to the VATs-like Time Dilation system, the character customizations, and the biting wit of their cast, and The Outer Worlds almost feels like a second home. Perhaps familiar to a fault, things have turned out well for those who loved Obsidian's RPGs. It receives a score of 8.43

14. Child of Light

While it's inspired by classic fairytales and medieval myths, Ubisoft Montreal's turn-based platformer is no ordinary storybook adventure. Princess Aurora's journey is an experience to follow as we assist her in her faceoffs against monsters, both big and small. What stays consistent is the wonders of the world of Lemura--each stage delicately designed and packed with intriguing puzzles. It receives a playscore of 8.43

13. Hyperlight Drifter

Covered with a thick purple color-scheme, Heart Machine’s pixel-perfect indie-action game looks and feels like an RPG gem. Showing off a beautifully dilapidated world of death and treasure, play as a Drifter on a pilgrimage to uncover the truth behind its world. A hybrid of classic 16-bit visuals and modernized combat mechanics, it's a sight for sore eyes and it has a score of 8.49

12. Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition

Packed with two new playable characters and full voice acting, this definitive version makes this Tales entry feel more alive than ever before. Just like Elder Scrolls, its high definition makeover has made the world of Terca Lumireis feel fresh even on the new platforms. Now, old fans and new have the opportunity to experience its battle systems and compelling narrative once more. It has a playscore of 8.5

11. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

A ubiquitous name in the RPG world. The Xbox One has definitely not outgrown this installment of Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series. Revitalizing the experience with smoother framerates, HD textures, and all of their DLCs. It was this edition that made Skyrim feel at home in the new generation, and for a whole new audience. It gets a playscore of 8.5

10. Salt and Sanctuary

Ska Studios' fourth game is a cleverly crafted 2D action RPG that challenges amateur players with the brutal difficulty of its Metroidvania action. It becomes an addictingly visceral adventure with its combination of complex combat and seamless animations. Taking a while to make it to the Xbox One, it's now a certified RPG staple on the console with a score of 8.51

9. Dark Souls III

Dark Souls III may be the end of the road for the series, but it will be long before we forget it. Borrowing elements from Bloodborne, Dark Souls III capped off the series with a bigger, better, action-oriented approach to combat that retained their previous games' sense of strategy. Adding their deep lore and their gothic locales to the equation, there's no wondering how they earned their shining a reputation and a playscore of 8.54

8. South Park: The Fractured But Whole

Quite a difference from this list's usual fare, South Park may never take itself too seriously, but it's still got a lot to offer when it comes to RPG experiences. Following up stupid hilarity of Stick of Truth, this sequel has one-upped the original with its own twist on today's superhero obsession. Follow Cartman and his friends as they engage in a fiery civil war between which of them deserves a movie franchise. It has a playscore of 8.59

7. Monster Hunter: World

Perhaps one of the biggest Monster Hunter adventures to date. Not only is it grander in terms of realism and graphics, but it also included a multiplayer mode that was more convenient than ever before. Aside from the multiplayer, World also presents us with an arsenal of unique new weapons and a whole bestiary of new monsters, all packed within their array of new worlds. Best experienced with the recent Iceborne expansion, it receives a playscore of 8.6

6. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Continuing the legacy of the first two games, Inquisition lets you play the unexpected inquisitor charged with saving the world from a growing threat. At the time, it was awarded as one of the best RPGs of the year, boasting a vast open-world to explore, complete with a riveting to story to unfold. Still worth it after all these years, it gets a playscore of 8.61

5. Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition

This particular edition really did a lot to revitalize what has been a pretty lukewarm release from Blizzard. With it came smoother framerates, resolutions, as well as the new Reaper of Souls expansion, which added new character classes and a fifth act. It doesn't sound like much now, but it was the push that Diablo III needed. We'll just have to see how the coming 4th installment will do against this game-changing entry. It has a playscore of 8.63

4. Fallout 4

Bethesda's fourth main installment of their radioactive series had to go through a few bumps in the road, but ultimately it lived up to the legacy of their name. An open-world set in a post-nuclear Boston, Fallout 4 is packed with memorable characters, multiple branching stories, and an all-consuming base-building feature. Thanks to its character customizations, shooting mechanics, and moving storyline, it's exactly what you'd expect from Fallout 4, and so much more. It has a playscore of 8.66

3. NieR: Automata - BECOME AS GODS Edition

Yoko Taro's spinoff of the Drakengard series is one of our recent action RPG gems. A game that brings us in for its intriguing robotic main character and hack and slash kills, keeps us hooked with its whole existential ride. Packed with a range of endings, Nier's is a story that has plenty of layers. And it's made all the more worthwhile in this Become As Gods Edition that contains all of its major DLCs. A new classic from Platinum, it has a playscore of 8.73

2. Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition

Larian Studios has been one of today's leading names in the RPG world and it's a reputation that they rightly deserved. With this sequel, they prove their worth once more. They brought pen and paper emergent RPG gameplay with the first game, and here, they enhanced it even further, with a multiplayer mode, a Dungeon Master mode, and a fleshing out of a storyline that was already amazing to begin with. If there's anyone that can bring RPG to life on consoles and out, it's Larian Studios with a playscore of 8.86

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

There are some names you can't just beat. After years of dominating the gaming world, CD Projekt Red's third and final entry to their Witcher series has become a gold standard when it comes to open-world action RPGs. It offered players a gorgeous world and storyline to get lost in, and it made for an adventure that was hard to forget. While its RPG mechanics may not be that deep, jumping into the shoes of the Witcher is well worth it, even to this day. It has a playscore of 9.04

Smite has always been about pitting gods and other mythological beings against each other, but after the big Cthulhu announcement, it looks like the game is ready to bring in some unexpected (but very welcome) faces.

Just in, Smite has announced the upcoming Avatar Battle Pass, and it will bring the likes of Aang, Korra, and Zuko into the game. Here’s the teaser:

While some may think that these are all new characters, it looks like they will be enhanced skins for existing heroes; with Aang for Merlin, Korra for Skadi, and Zuko for Susano. No doubt the skins will also come with some specific effects that are more accurate to the characters.

This is sure to get Avatar fans excited, and it’s possible that this could have been done as cross promotion for the upcoming live-action series on Netflix.

Hopefully, this all culminates in an Avatar: The Last Airbender video game. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Activision had successfully brought back the Crash Bandicoot franchise with remasters of the N. Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing, but come October, they are looking to explore new ground. Just in, we have our first trailer for the next traditional Crash game, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.

Here’s the logline:

It’s About Time ⏰ for a brand-wumping new #CrashBandicoot game! ? Crash fourward into a time-shattering adventure in Crash Bandicoot™ 4: It’s About Time.

While there have been multiple entries in the Crash franchise before the remaster, it looks like the devs are going to be ignoring it, making this game a direct sequel to Crash Bandicoot: Warped. This could be a blow to fans who enjoyed Wrath of Cortex, but maybe Activision can find ways for other fan favorites to come to the game.

We don’t have a full breakdown of what the story will be for It’s About Time. It may stay true to the core Crash Bandicoot formula, with Cortex planning his revenge and Crash and Coco running around special maps trying to collect certain items. We can also expect those special missions which require vehicles or different terrain.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is set to come out for the Xbox One and PS4 on Oct. 9.

61 Upcoming PlayStation 5 Games in 2020

The Steam Summer Game Festival has just kicked off, and Skystone Games is joining in on the fun with a free demo for their upcoming zombie game, Undying.

The demo will be available from June 16–June 22 and will give players ‘a taste of what’s to come.’ Here’s the teaser that was dropped at GamesCom:

Here’s the description of the story:

Undying, the upcoming title from Vanimals, tells the story of mother Anling and her son Cody. Infected by a zombie bite, Anling's days are numbered. She must now fight to survive, not for herself but her young son, Cody. Players will strive to ensure Cody's survival in this zombie infested world by protecting him, searching for safety, and teaching him valuable skills, at any cost.

With all the excitement coming from the release of The Last of Us Part II later this week, I wonder how Undying plans to set itself apart, what with its premise of an adult trying to guide a younger character through the apocalypse. If anything, Undying doesn’t look as graphic as The Last of Us, and the game mechanics should be different as compared to TLOU’s shooter format.

Vanimals founder Kun Wang did have this to say about the game:

“Undying is something very near and dear to our hearts… We believe there’s room for a game in the zombie genre that pulls at your heartstrings as much as it thrills you, and we can’t wait for everyone to try the demo this week during the Steam Summer Game Festival.”

Undying becomes available for Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Android, and iOS sometime in 2021.

There are a lot of big games coming out this year, and after The Last of Us Part II, everyone is eagerly anticipating the release of Cyberpunk 2077. Unfortunately, the game has been delayed a third time.

As told in a letter from CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 will have to move from its September release date to November 19. The announcement reads:

“We are fully aware that making such a decision costs us your trust and trading trust for additional time is one of the hardest decisions a game developer can make. And despite we think it's the right decision for the game, we'd still like to apologize for making you wait longer. Our intention is to make Cyberpunk 2077 something that will stay with you for years to come. In the end, we hope you understand why we did what we did."

When it comes to fixes, the devs iterate that the content and gameplay of Cyberpunk has already been finished. The real problem lies with the numerous bugs that plague the game; you can’t have something so expansive and not have some details to iron out.

With the latest scandal of Crunch Culture revealed for studios like NetherRealm and Naughty Dog, hearing that games get delayed in order to give developers more time seems like the better path.

For now, Cyberpunk 2077 now sits on a release date of Nov. 19 for the PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Google Stadia.

CD Projekt Red Delays Cyberpunk 2077 AGAIN

Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the best games on the PlayStation 4, and Guerilla Games is set to come back with a sequel for the PS5: Horizon Forbidden West.

Though we got a trailer along with the PS5 reveal, we have a new featurette giving us a better look at Aloy’s next adventure.

With the first game mainly taking place in one large continent, Forbidden West promises to bring us to new locations, underwater, and in the sky. Guerilla Games also boasts that there won’t be any loading times anymore when you play the game.

As for the world itself, we’re going to get access to a whole new bunch of different mech animals, plus we’ll get to meet different tribes of people as Aloy travels further into the technological wilderness.

While some were hoping that Forbidden West would launch along with the PS5 later this year, it’s been confirmed by game director Mathijs de Jonge that the game is aiming for a release in 2021.
