25. Monster Energy Supercross - The Official Videogame 2 on PS4, Xbox One and Switch

The official Monster Energy Supercross game gets a sequel and it's still about as...decent as the last one. After a passable but lackluster debut in 2018, this year's installment has a slew of new features. They change the game for the better with the introduction, the Compound and the improved career mode. It also amps the accuracy of their simulation, which almost makes up for some of the presentational shortcomings. It has a playscore of 7.41 on the PS4, 6.93 on the Xbox One, and a Provisional score of 7.68 on the Switch.

24. OlliOlli: Switch Stance

Still considered one of the most addicting sidescrolling sports platformers on the 3DS, Olliolli skates into the Switch with this twofold bundle. Switch Stance will include the first game as well as the equally exciting sequel, Welcome to Olliwood. While it's been criticized for a half-pipe learning curve, it still stands as an excellent, if not masochistic, a platformer for the Switch, with a Provisional playscore of 7.72.

23. The Book of Unwritten Tales 2

THQ Nordic and King Art makes a return to the world of Aventasia with this sequel to this point and click adventure. First released in 2015, this switch port reintroduces us to Wilbur, Ivo, Nate, and Critter as they embark on quests in a magical world of war, romance, and political intrigue. Bogged down by its slow movement and odd puzzle designs, it makes up for it with its hilarious characters and interesting storylines. A Provisional Score of 7.75.

22. Yakuza Kiwami

The remake to SEGA's open-world action adventure set in Japan. Once a PlayStation exclusive, it finally comes to the PC to positive reviews. A remake of the PlayStation 2 game, this port has brought some of its age along with it. Fortunately, it doesn't steal much from the spotlight of its original charm. Adding some tweaks to liven up an already awesome game, it's still a pretty impressive port, and it earns a rating of 7.77.

21. City of Brass

Jumping off from itchy trigger fingers, this title from Uppercut Games aimed to put your lightfingered-ness to the test. From the senior developers of Bioshock, this first-person action adventure was first released on the PC and consoles where it was mostly panned for its hefty price tag and iffy controls. Critic reviews on the switch have been positive though, praising the game for its roguelike elements and the crack of their whip. It has a rating of 7.78.

20. Spinnortality

A cyber simulation at heart, Spinnortality lets you play the other side of the revolution coin by putting you at the heart of an evil global megacorporation. Mastermind stock market crashes, forward automation in place of human workers, or rig the next developing nation's elections - all with a click of a button. All of this is presented in their sleek UI that never fails to update you on your latest bad deed. Entertaining for the most part but needs a little bit more options, it gets a score of 7.79.

19. The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame

This videogame adaptation of Warner Bros awesomely animated comedy is back for more LEGO hijinks. Set after the events of the second movie, Emmet and friends go beyond their world to save their friends from alien monsters. Getting its first scores on the PlayStation 4, this lego installment had some polarizing reviews, getting high ratings from users and scathing ones from critics. Not the best for the master builder, it has a playscore of 7.84.

18. Stellaris: Console Edition on PS4 and Xbox One

Just one out of their many successful lines of grand strategy games. Paradox Development Studios has brought the richness of their diverse alien races to the consoles. Delivering the goods to an underserved market of strategists, Stellaris fits right in on the PS4 and Xbox One. Offering a vast universe of story and discovery in a convenient package, there's nothing quite like it yet. It receives Provisional playscores of 7.95 on the PS4 and 7.76 on the Xbox One

17. Trials Rising

This the first new title in the Trials series since 2014's Trials Fusion. Entering the 2.5 Dimension, Rising opens up new horizons for trials enthusiasts. And that's especially true, with their fresh exotic locations and numerous track offerings. But the numbers are not the only thing that's impressed, it's the level of creativity in each one. The whole package of quantity and quality. It has the highest score on the Xbox One with a provisional rating of 7.97.

16. God Eater 3 on PS4 and PC

The latest installment of Bandai Namco's hit post-apocalyptic JRPG brings us to an unrecognizable Earth. Populated by hostile Aragamis, it's once again our task to rid home of the invading threat. The curtain call to a popular series, it's not the most memorable ending. Critics complain against their dull interactions, distorted storytelling, and lack of innovations. On the other hand, it did get a lot of praise from challenge seeking fans for the vast improvements since the last title. It gets a rating of 7.99 on the PS4, and 7.56 on the PC.

15. BlazBlue: Central Fiction - Special Edition

This installment of the award-winning fighting game arrives on the Switch with style. Perhaps the definitive edition of their fourth game, not only does this Special Edition contains all of its DLC, it also has more than 40 hours of new storyline. Which means it ties up all of the loose ends of the original for that sweet, satisfying finale. Already a captivating 2D Fighter, experience it all on the Switch with a Provisional playscore of 8.07.

14. Devotion

Here's a controversial one. A horror game from a Taiwanese developer, Red Candle Games, Devotion has been scaring people shitless on Steam since its very recent release. While it has earned acclaim from various reviewers for its well-paced scares and tight story, Devotion sadly disappeared off the face of Steam since its Winnie the Pooh meme sparked a backlash from Chinese gamers. Probably aware of its mocking undertones against sitting president Xi Jinping. Currently unavailable on Steam, if you're looking for a good scare, it's out there online, with a Provisional playscore of 8.08.

13. Eastshade

After getting our pants stained in the last entry, Eastshade Studios' atmospheric game is the perfect palette cleanser. With an open world that's ripe for exploration, Eastshade is just one incredible beauty to the next. Playing as a traveling painter, roam around their scenic environments, make friends, and capture the beauty that their world provides. A canvas for painting, talking, and all-out relaxation, Eastshade is a beautifully enveloping experience--technical warts and all. It has a playscore of 8.09.

12. Far Cry New Dawn on PS4, Xbox One and PC

It looks like it all turned out decent for Far Cry's latest installment--at least on some of the platforms. It's set in the same Hope County we knew from Far Cry 5 - albeit with a nuclear blossom 17 years after. Most of the concern pre-release was about rehashed mechanics and sights. Some of those did come true as New Dawn is packed with the same, familiar Far Cry gameplay, with some new features attached. The consensus seems to be that if you loved Far Cry 5, and wanted, it's still worth the pickup. It has a playscore of 8.14 on the PS4, 7.73 on the Xbox One and 7.49 on the PC.

11. Etrian Odyssey Nexus

Etrian's last game for the 3DS is nothing less than magical. The sixth mainline title to Atlus' award-winning RPG, it brings us back to an adventure to the world tree Yggdrasil. This time, by the orders of Princess Persephone. Combining the strengths of their past titles, Nexus serves up a grand dose of RPG action with 19 playable classes and a grand, standalone story. Another good reason to return to the 3DS, as it has a playscore of 8.15.

10. Tetris 99

Did somebody say… Tetris Battle Royale?! The Switch is getting some love with this polygonal warfare from developer ARIKA. Nintendo’s free to play Tetris game faces you off with 99 players! Just like any BR game, last one standing wins. So utilize your fancy t-spins and other tricks to dominate the battlefield and be the champion amongst these shapes. It receives a Provisional playscore of 8.19.

9. Salt And Sanctuary

Who could ever forget this souls-like adventure game? Ska Studios' fourth game is a cleverly crafted 2D action RPG that will challenge amateur players with the brutal difficulty of its Metroidvania action. Despite inspiring a number of comparisons with Castlevania and Dark Souls, Salt and Sanctuary is its own magic. It becomes an addictingly visceral adventure with its combination of complex combat and seamless animations. Gather and craft up to 600 pieces of armor, weapons, and spells, and use them to survive the doom and gloom world. Initially released on Steam, the game has reached the Xbox One community and it received a playscore of 8.26.

8. X-Morph Defense

EXOR Studios’ unique fusion of this top-down shooter with tower-defense elements lets you invade the Earth with your massive horde of extraterrestrial wonders. Use a variety of destructive weapons and select from different types of alien towers. Once it’s all set, throw yourself into the heat of the battle. As an X-Morph, terraform the surface by harvesting the resources of the planet. Defend these alpha aliens from the waves of incoming human forces. It’s a pretty fun twist to the mainstream genre, and it receives a Provisional playscore of 8.28.

7. DiRT Rally 2.0 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

Play like the pros in the real-life tracks of Barcelona, Montalegre, Hell, Silverstone, and more in this leading racing game in the market. Offering stunning environments from 6 global locations, it's by far the best of the series. Experience a spectacular racing adventure filled with realistic visuals, atmospheric soundtrack, and various vehicles to choose from. Though it has its flaws, the game still shines with Provisional playscores of 8.28 on the PC, 8.18 on the PS4 and 8.04 on the X1.

6. Steins;Gate Elite on PS4 and Switch

Taking snippets from the successful anime adaptation, 5pb.'s upcoming visual novel game will be a fully animated adventure game. Forgoing the standard visual novel format, this is the first for the entire series. Injecting the vibrancy of their 24-minute episodes, this latest entry will also feature new routes never before seen in the anime. It's a fully remastered version of the first Steins Gate title, creating a fully immersive world with various endings depending on your choices. It scores an 8.28 on the PS4 and 8.11 on the Switch.

5. Angry Birds VR: Isle Of Pigs

Developed and published by Resolution Games, go on a virtual reality trip with the amazing angry avians of the franchise.
From the publishers behind the adorable indie farming simulator, Stardew Valley, Chucklefish comes out of their picturesque farms and into the world of turn-based tactics. Inspired by the 2001 tactical classic, Advanced Wars, they bring back their signature retro pixel aesthetics to reintroduce the turn-based genre through their detailed sprites, memorable characters, and inviting storyline. Not to mention it’s paired with Chucklefish's style with a mesmerizing soundtrack to accompany the game's many campaigns. It receives a playscore of 8.40 on the Switch, 8.07 on PC, and 7.58 on the X1.

The sudden and controversial switch from Steam to the Epic Store makes no difference when we’re talking about Deep Silver’s post-apocalyptic first-person survival shooter. The nuclear winter is no longer a threat, and it’s up to Artyom and his band of brothers to bring back civilization outside the Metro. Explore its semi-open world and rebuild a new frontier for humanity amidst the mutated creatures and radioactive mess. Top 25 NEW Games Released in February 2019

25 Best New Android Games of February 2019

In 2018, Fireproof Games graced mobile gamers with The Room: Old Sins on iOS and Android, another installment of their award-winning puzzle-adventure series. Previous The Room games received numerous awards not just for the challenging puzzles but also the ingenious ways they utilize touch functions on mobile devices. Old Sins is no exception.

Raine Colubio, whatoplay’s Community Manager, had the opportunity to interview Barry Meade, one of the founders of Fireproof Games.

Raine: Hello Barry. Thank you so much for giving us the time to talk to you about the original The Room trilogy and the new Old Sins. Fans, me included, waited for its release and it was every bit as good as expected. The first three The Room games were interconnected -- following the same story. However, Old Sins while still in the same universe, has its own storyline. Will it be followed by a couple more games?

Barry: We don’t feel like we’re finished with The Room yet so yes, we expect more games to come in the future. As for stories, we would only look back to an older story if we thought we had something cool to add to it. We enjoyed making an original story for The Room: Old Sins and in a similar way I expect we’ll continue to give each new game its own flavour.

Raine: The first game of the trilogy was released on the Nintendo Switch last year. Are games 2 and 3 following anytime soon?

Barry: We’d love to put all the Room games on Switch as the platform is such a natural home for The Room’s kind of gameplay. It all depends on the sales of the first game however – if enough people buy it, we’ll put as many games as we can on Switch!

Raine: The 3D puzzles of the whole series are one-of-a-kind and among the best in mobile platforms. Are there plans to expand to a full VR experience?

Barry: Honestly, we’ve always wanted to make a VR-only Room game and we’re constantly looking for ways to make it happen. As far as we’re concerned The Room has the potential to be one of the very best VR games so I’m pretty sure sure one day it will, I just can’t say exactly when.

Raine: What can we expect from Fireproof games? Are you currently working on a game outside of the The Room?

Barry: Fireproof are always dreaming up new game ideas outside of The Room! We have a few ideas that we already like the look of and as a team we like to be experimental where we can, so I would definitely say there are non-Room games in our future.

It is truly exciting to see where Fireproof games will take us next, whether we’ll be once again trapped in another Room installment, or be it another game entirely. This is a game studio to look out for not only on mobile, but potentially the other platforms as well.

Barry Meade, one of the founders of Fireproof Games, shares plans for more The Room titles, virtual reality, the Nintendo Switch and the future of the award-winning indie studio he cofounded.

10. YIIK: A Postmodern RPG

Getting mixed reviews on Steam, and some decent ratings from critics, Ackk Studios' indie RPG laden with hipster vibes is a polarizing at best. Harking back to the 1990s with its visuals and characterization, you either get it or you don't. Y2K brands itself as a surreal Japanese-style RPG, becoming obvious with their heavy handed references to the quirky, witty, and underrated Mother series--or Earthbound for the North American fans.

Telling the story of a liberal arts major, Alex, and his friends through visual novel style and JRPG like combat, you can expect Y2K to be easy on whatever low-end laptops and desktops you have. Requiring only 2gigs of RAM and the basic Intel Graphics, you can experience its unique offering of turn of the century angst and dialog.

Not exactly the most universally praised title, you can at the very least, find out for yourself. It has a provisional playscore of 7.33

9. The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED]

Obnoxiously plastering REMASTERED onto its title, Eternal Castle markets itself as a remake of a 1987 title of the same name. Nobody's entirely sure if there was such a game but, for the most part, the consensus about the game is, fortunately, it's pretty good--remake or not. With its bright pixel environments, Eternal Castle plays at a steady 18 frames per second. Before anyone of you gets disappointed, that's how it was intended to be, and that's exactly how it played on our low-end devices.

Rendered with computer generated animation, the game's visuals definitely looks rough, which only adds to the believability of its supposed retro, 1980s origins. Telling the tale of a world post AI using colorful and purposive silhouettes, Eternal Castle is an enjoyable package of sights, sounds, and story.

Whether or not it's a remaster, what's important is it's here, it's decent, and it works. It has a playscore of 7.77

8. Spinnortality

Looks like cyberpunk is a huge trend among this list of low-spec games. This one from developer James Patton, on the other hand, is less action-packed shooting sequences, and more mindful destruction. A cyber simulation at its heart, Spinnortality lets you play the other side of the revolution coin by putting you at the heart of an evil global megacorporation.

Mastermind stock market crashes, forward automation in place of human workers, or rig the next developing nation's elections--all with a click of a button. All of this is presented in their stylish UI, with sleek maps and menus, that never fail to tell you the news and updates of your latest bad deed. Overlooking the whole world in one place, it leaves whatever disastrous consequences to your imaginations, making it an incredibly light game for your system.

A portable showcase of corporate's dark side, it has a provisional playscore of 7.79

7. WarGroove

While some games in the art style might be a little taxing on graphics, WarGroove is decently optimized for low-end devices, running smoothly at 60 frames per second with no graphical tweaks needed. Paired with Chucklefish's style is an equally mesmerizing soundtrack to accompany the game's many campaigns.

Far from perfect, WarGroove is a recent but hefty addition to any turn-based fan's library. Supporting cross-platform play, online multiplayer, local co-op, and a comprehensive level editor that lets you create maps and cutscenes, it’s a well-deserved playscore of 8.09

6. PikuNiku

Devolver's got some of the most stylish titles in the indie lineup but one of the best ones for your potato PCs is this quirky puzzle adventure game from Sectordub. Much like most indie titles, Pikuniku commits to naive minimalism with their simple hues, flat geometric shapes, and wobbly-legged characters.

Going ahead into the important stuff, Pikuniku's gameplay stays at a pretty steady 60fps, except for a few hiccups in a some areas. It's visuals isn't too far from what you would expect from today's crop of mobile games, but this game one-ups all of them simply by the charm of the execution.

Simplistic and occasionally aimless as it is, it never feels cheap. Despite sticking with traditional platforming, you never know what to expect from it as you jump from one vague objective to the next.

A light, mixed bag of pure delight, this might be the adorable albeit short title you need on your PC, with a playscore of 8.11

5. Becalm

Colorfiction’s free-to-play casual game isn’t really much of a game. It’s an adventure that involves no gameplay at all. Becalm introduces you to a literal calming experience as you drift through magical waters.

It’s dreamy watercolor aesthetics bring life to multiple biomes and offer a unique experience for players who just don’t want to kill monsters and do silly quests. Simply use your mouse and voyage across its picturesque ocean.

As a visual experience, it does take up a lot of GPU and PC energy. So as you are at the mercy of the wind and casting adrift on your sailboat, the game fluctuates between 23 to 30 fps throughout.

It has a provisional playscore of 8.17

4. Catherine Classic

Before Full Body comes out on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, this original version of the adventure-puzzler from ATLUS is about to steal your heart, in a different way. It’s unlike any other game from the developers. You don’t fight demons, talk to them, or have a party member fighting in the name of friendship. But your choices will really matter in this game.

Play as Vincent, a normal man trapped in a nightmarish curse after meeting a mysterious girl named Catherine. Aside from that, you patch things up with your fiance, a Katherine with a K, in its choice-driven scenarios. Gameplay involves running away from demonic creatures, all while you move blocks strategically to climb the top in order to wake up from this nightmarish world.

We played this game on its default settings. The game runs pretty well, surprisingly. For low-spec gaming, you need to put your resolution at 1280 by 720. Enabling depth of field, bloom, blur, and anti-aliasing will give you a good framerate average of 44 fps.

It receives a playscore of 8.20

3. Takanaria

You gotta love pixel-indie games for their low-budget charm. Crownbird's simple game doesn’t have any story to complete and no hack and slash stylish combat. It’s an adventure game that takes you to a Greek-inspired island with a ton of new things to discover.

Enjoy its beautiful pixel scenery and take control of Anensi, a botanist, and Yaful, a manager of an island in Takanaria. It’s a short game that requires no intense dedication. Dialogue is kept simple and it feels like a young developers’ dream coming true. It’s art and it clearly shows that it’s made with passion. The game runs very well, of course, on our powerful PC. 60fps never felt this good on a pixel art game.

It has a provisional playscore of 8.26

2. Unsung Warriors: Prologue

We adore indie games on this list. It’s the perfect genre when it comes to low-spec gaming. You don’t need a fancy graphics card, a shiny RGB motherboard, or a huge monitor that supports 4K. All you need is the time and place to play this lovely action-adventure game from Osarion.

Set in the Europe-inspired Iron Age, fight your way past a vicious horde of enemies and evade traps. Explore an ancient crypt and uncover its secrets. It’s a game that can be played solo, or with a friend.

We tried it on our very reliable Whatoplay PC and yes, it runs pretty smoothly. It’s a good-looking game that consistently gives us 60 frames per second. You just gotta love these kind of indie games because there’s not much to worry about optimizations. You could say that they really are the ‘unsung heroes’ of this modern era of gaming.

It receives a rating of 8.84

Unknown Worlds’ latest addition to their open-ocean survival game takes you deep into an alien ecosystem in the dark and cold aquatic abyss. Set in a mysterious below-zero planet, try to make it out alive by finding the necessary tools for your escape.

Set in first person mode, submerge into this unknown ocean and encounter friendly AND deadly creatures of the deep. Below Zero is set in a freezing extraterrestrial planet, try to survive its unpredictable ecological mess by finding the right materials, resources, and tools.

As an Early Access Game, it’s almost unplayable. But don’t worry, you just need to sacrifice a few resolutions and some graphical quality changes in order to play it smoothly. Decrease it to 1024 by 768 and you’ll get an acceptable 22 to 28 FPS. Besides, it’s still an early access game so there’s more room to improve!

It has a provisional playscore of 8.96

Top 50 Best Nintendo 3DS Games Ever Released [2019 update]

In 2018, the gaming community was made richer with GRIS, the first title released by Barcelona-based indie suite, Nomada Studio. It receive several awards including our very own 2018 Game of Year Award for Indie PC titles. GRIS rise to critical success and popularity doesn't come as a surprise considering the team behind the studio. The studio was founded by Ubisoft alumni Adrian Cuevas and Roger Mendoza in partnership with distinquished artist Conrad Roset.

Conrad, the creative director of GRIS, was responsible for the game's ethereal visuals -- the part praised by both critics and gamers. Raine Colubio, whatoplay's Community Manager, had the opportunity to chat with Conrad about GRIS.

When asked about the transition from illustration to interactive art, the differences between the two media and all the associated challenges, this is what Conrad has to say:

Conrad: It actually felt pretty natural. There were a few problems, especially balancing performance and practicality with artistic vision. This has been a very work and time intensive project. My creative process usually starts with a great deal of documentation. I look for videos, films, pictures, etc. to define the style of my work. In Gris this was done by all of the art team for about half a year. Then there's a stage of concept and we go from there to the definitive approach. I have always played videogames and I just asked myself "Why don't I make my own?". Not too long after that I met Adrian and Roger though a common acquaintance and soon we were developing a prototype.

Raine: GRIS is such a beautiful game, visually, aurally, and the subtle story really resonated with a lot of the players. During the Reddit AMA with Roger and Adrian, they mentioned that the ‘feel’ of GRIS was inspired by Journey, INSIDE, some Studio Ghibli films, and old school Disney films. Is this same true for your art style?

Conrad: My two main references during my career as an illustrator have been Egon Schielle and Gustav Klimt. Though surely they haven't been the only ones, many of the forms that I consumed during my life helped consolidating my style, and those films and games are not exceptions.

Raine: How did the game’s concept come to you? With the game’s level of attention to detail, was it difficult to pull off?

Conrad: I saw a sketch from a coworker and the idea of a colorless world that recovered it's color as the player advanced in the game came to me. As I said, there were a few difficulties. I wanted the game to feel as a whole illustration, and for me it was hard to use repeated assets. In the end we struck that middle point, but it wasn't easy.

Raine: Some would argue GRIS is more of an experience than a traditional game. It’s more of a playable art piece. We see a lot of that kind of game pop up in the recent years with the likes of Journey, Limbo, Monument valley, etc -- still, there are those who think the gameplay can get a tad bit boring since it’s not so adrenaline pumping as most games. What do you say to that? Also how do you feel about people calling your game interactive art?

Conrad: Not every game is for everyone. It is perfectly normal for players who are looking for a more action packed experience to feel so, we are not trying to tell anyone what they should think about GRIS. We just say what we have to say in it, and then let the public decide what it means for them.

Raine: At the end of the day, GRIS was an amazing success, and so many people resonating with it -- especially because it’s so beautiful, how does this make you feel?

Conrad: We didn't expect this overwhelmingly positive response, but we are certainly not complaining! It is really heartwarming for us to see how so many people love it! It is an honor and a pleasure.

Raine: Our community in YouTube and Facebook has been wanting to ask these questions. Are there any sequels in the horizon? Or a DLC, perhaps?

Conrad: None at all! GRIS is a completed work, there's no need for those.

Raine: It’s currently only available on the PC and Switch, will there be a PS4 or Xbox One version soon?

Conrad: There's not a PS4 or xBox release planned, but in the future, who knows? We certainly aren't closing any doors!

Raine: What’s next for Nomada Studio?

Conrad: For now we rest, but soon we will come back with new ideas and projects!

Raine: Lastly, what was your favorite part of GRIS?

Baring the ending, I'd say it's the moment after GRIS crosses the great sandstorm and enters the temple in the desert.

1. Days Gone

Just when we thought the zombie genre is literally dead, SIE Bend's latest work comes out to prove that it’s not the case and that the zombie genre keeps showing up to the latest games on the market. It even had its own HD reimagining with this year’s Resident Evil 2 reboot.

But as for Sony’s latest exclusive, it takes the Zombie genre to a whole new level. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where you play as Deacon St. John. A former outlaw who travels the barren United States with his badass motorbike. Explore the forsaken Pacific Northwest riddled with zombies called the “Freakers”.

It's also not a linear experience, and its stealth mechanics seemingly lets players survive on their own terms. As a biker, upgrade and repair using scraps from the environment. Although it suffered numerous delays, the game is finally coming out this April 26.

2. Concrete Genie

Take a look at one of the best PS4 exclusive you probably haven't seen yet. While it's an admittedly low-key title from Pixelopus, Concrete Genie is anything but lackluster. An action-adventure game about a lone teenager with a knack for graffiti, Concrete Genie shows off a world that injects dazzling magic into his otherwise dreary reality. From what we see, it's already an artistic feat, with art styles, animations, and music that blend together into one atmospheric experience.

Talking about themes of bullying and escapism through emergent puzzle gaming, Ash--it's the main character--goes on to solve the environmental riddles using the monsters that he draws and breathes life into. It's not exactly groundbreaking, but the game makes up for it with the utter beauty of Ash's creations that will make you keep screenshots of everything. Great for that chill puzzle solving, it comes out this spring.

3. MediEvil

A game all about reanimating the dead, the 1998 classic action-adventure also gets a new lease on life in this ground-up remake. Already past resurrection with its 2005 reimagining for the PlayStation portable, this remake for the PS4 is leaps ahead in terms of graphics and gameplay. In their Halloween trailer last October 2018, SONY shows off just how much has changed between the old game and the new.

With its 4K resolution support, the skeletal knight looks as good as new in his clear as day nighttime environments. For the uninitiated, MediEvil follows the story of the knight, Sir Dan, as he battles against an evil sorcerer, a hundred years after his death on the battlefield. This story follows a slew of exciting hack and slash action that would put Dark Souls to shame--if Dark Souls existed in the 90s. A veritable treat for fans of the series, it's time for our inner children to return to Gallowmere once it releases sometime this year.

One half of the duo that brought us "Rick and Morty", Justin Roiland teams up with Squanch Games to bring the world a new home for absurdist adventures. And for anyone who enjoyed the series, the look and feel of this 3D virtual reality world have pretty much the same energy as the TV--although less of their bleak and mundane earth world, and more of their interdimensional cosmos. Some of the series’ cast also lent their familiar voices to make the world feel more alive.

From their demo, it looks like they'll be more irreverent jokes, 4th wall breaking, and hilarious commercials in this title too. Playing as both chairworshipping Chairorpean and Trover, the focus for its creators has been to deliver an immersive experience, whether on the VR or in the traditional format--and you can be sure there's a meta comedic moment for that one too. With no release date yet, we'll have to wait and see what else is in store for us sometime this year.

5. WiLD

The man behind the cult success that was Beyond Good and Evil, Michel Ancel's name has been equated with greatness, so much so that anything he makes is a sure-buy. But, with Beyond Good and Evil's prequel of sorts already on the horizons, it looks like the long-promised WiLD has been put on the back burner. Announced at Gamescom 2014 with a spectacular trailer, Ancel's WiLD promised a procedurally generated survival game where we get to take control of all the animals and use it to fight against other tribes.

Paired with online play and a massive open world, it was definitely an ambitious premise that got everyone hooked. Aside from a few snippets from two years ago, and some teasers from Ancel's Instagram, there's really not much news on the game. On the other hand, at least we know this PS4 exclusive, though still in its early stages, is coming for us. Someday soon, we hope.

6. Deep Down

If anyone remembers that Dark Souls-like game CAPCOM made, it’s Deep Down. Still a working title, this adventure shares similarities to both Dragon’s Dogma and Dark Souls, the game sticks to the third-person action-adventure but with a greater focus on co-op multiplayer.

It’s a dungeon-crawling experience that enables players to roam around its medieval fantasy world slaying monsters and unlocking secrets. It’s set in the year 2094 and it tells the story of a group known as the Ravens tasked to recover historical memories by touching ancient objects. The game is still deep in development (no pun intended) and unfortunately, the release date is still a mystery.

7. Ghost Of Tsushima

From the guys that gave us the award-winning inFAMOUS series comes a brand new IP that exudes a strong Japanese machismo. Ghost of Tsushima is what Tenchu could’ve been in this modern time. Sucker Punch Productions puts us in a sprawling open-world for players to explore Tsushima Island.

Set during the first Mongol Invasion of Japan, players control the Last Samurai, Jin Sakai. Master new fighting styles and achieve the way of the Ghost to finally defeat the Mongolians and fight for the freedom and independence of Japan.

Gameplay mainly revolves around action-adventure with a huge emphasis on stealth. Set in a third-person perspective, players roam around the world taking missions and interacting with the environment. Use the game’s grappling hook feature to traverse seamlessly from point A to B. Duel with enemies and use your extensive array of Japanese medieval weapons including Katanas. It’s a true Samurai experience. Unfortunately, no release date yet. It comes out on the PS4.

8. Dreams

PlayStation 4’s new playground of creativity is developed by the guys behind LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway. Dreams is different compared to Media Molecule's other entries, it offers a surreal universe for players to play and enjoy. It showcases the PlayStation 4’s power of Play, Create, and Share. It relies heavily on the community and it’s up to the players to define their own version of the world.

Create various worlds with different experiences. Make interactive adventures, platformers, shoot ‘em ups, puzzlers, and even RPG’s. All it takes is just your imagination, and they are endless. Once everything is in place, share it with the community and let them enjoy your fine creation. It’s Sony’s version of RPG Maker. No release date yet, but hopefully it comes out soon.

9. Erica

When it comes to interactive stories, Sony excels at it. Notable games include Supermassive’s Until Dawn. This genre of gaming presents a multi-faceted version of storytelling and gameplay. Some would involve players making tough choices, while others simply follow the story and listen to what the protagonists have to say.

Erica is something. Developed by Flavourworks, it follows the story of a young woman haunted by a traumatic childhood. It blurs the line between a game and interactive movies. Dive into a unique cinematic experience that throws you into a shadowy world of emotional storytelling. Use the PlayStation 4’s PlayLink feature and simply use your mobile device to interact around Erica’s world.

Decipher the protagonist’s mind and uncover the mystery behind her growing darkness. Using live-action visuals, it's an entertaining visual trip that comes out sometime soon. No release date yet, unfortunately.

10. Final Fantasy VII Remake

The updates for this awaited remake were few and far between, making some of us wonder if it's gonna release at all. While Square Enix have set the record straight November last year, no official release date has been confirmed yet. What we can look forward to, however, is a refreshed and renewed adventure with Cloud Strife and his friends.

Dubbed as the Midgar Experience, this classic installment covered their fight against the company Shinra for the world's natural powers. A JRPG masterclass, this ground-up remake is reportedly built from the ground up--letting go of the pre-rendered environments of the 1997 title for the polygonal graphics of today. With this came a host of problems in development, particularly in the jump towards the action RPG format, which is a far cry from their turn-based origins. An exciting new take on a beloved JRPG classic, we'll have to stay tuned for the next announcement.

11. The Last of Us: Part II

Only of one of Naughty Dog's many PS4 exclusive hits, The Last of Us has made many of us emotional in-between the life-threatening escapades of an infected post-apocalypse. Now, with a brand new sequel finally in the works, the whole world's just waiting with bated breath. Unfortunately, we're all just huffing at this point, with not many details about the progress so far.

From what we know though, it will revolve around a decidedly more grown-up Ellie. The creative directive, Neil Druckman has said the second installment will be a tale of revenge. Who needs avenging, we are yet to find out. Druckmann has also recently hinted at a heart-wrenching scene on his Twitter account. This all gets a little worrying, considering we still don't know whether or not we'll see Joel in Part II. Promising more tears and adrenaline-pumping action, it's gonna be one hell of a new entry that sadly doesn't have a release date yet.

12. Blood & Truth

If you enjoyed the brutal gangster experience in PlayStation VR Worlds' London Heist minigame, then you're going to love THIS. Expanding the premise of the London Heist into a full VR title, Sony's own London Studio presents us with an opportunity to take on John Wick-like experience by amping the excitement of their experimental demo. Not only does London look and feel the part in Blood & Truth, but shooting also does too.

The game attempts to simulate actual gun tactics, with realistic ammunition and reloads, giving players that action movie feel. For some gamers, though, this narrative VR shooter loses some of its allure when considering its lack of full locomotion. Following on the heels of Firewall Zero Hour and Bravo Team, Blood & Truth might have some difficulty competing. Still, it's a promising shooter for anyone looking for that definitively British tone. No release date yet.

13. Star Child

First presented in 2017's Paris Games Week, this action-adventure wowed the masses with visuals that were nothing less than stunning. Reportedly a VR game from Playful Corp, the folks behind the playground platformer, Lucky's Tale, Star Child keeps the spirit of their previous platforming hits in the immersive world of VR. Described by one fan as a RiME meets Metroid, Star Child is a beautiful-looking narrative adventure that puts to use the powers of the VR platform.

Revolving around Spectra and her companion, help the stranded friends fight alien entities by controlling the world around her. Between this intriguing premise and the masterfully crafted announce trailer, it's no wonder the fans were abuzz about this upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive. Like the other upcoming games in this list, the updates are few and far between. Thankfully, Playful's CEO squashed all speculations about its cancellations. So, we know it's coming but when exactly that will be, we don't know.

14. Death Stranding

Kojima-san’s latest videogame after his days in Konami is something we’re not ready. This brand new IP puts together Kojima’s love for hard science fiction mixed with his appreciation for some great cinematic moments. Packing together iconic actors such as Norman Reedus, Lea Seydoux and Mads Mikkelsen. Together they tell a story that we still have no idea about.

Death Stranding takes players into the far future where a mysterious entity dominates humanity’s existence. But trailer after trailer, we still have no clue what Kojima means. First, we saw Norman Reedus delivering huge boxes, then we see a baby, then we see a gigantic monster with a hand for a face. We won’t get any answers as of the moment, and knowing Kojima, he’s just gonna keep doing that until we finally see the game come out sometime soon.

Release date is still a blur.

Radiation Blue's roguelike first-person shooter takes to a near future of corrupt policies and self-destructive regimes. A bit like a more grounded No Man's Sky, Genesis Alpha One also offers shipbuilding, resource gathering, and management alongside the natural gunplay. Though criticized for the tedium of some of its gameplay features, it's nonetheless a promising indie title that's great anyone that likes shooting with a side of simulation.

An artistic puzzler that shows a different side of the war, it has a provisional playscore of 8.02 on the Switch.

14. Pikuniku on the PC and Switch

A Devolver Digital release, you already know it's gonna be a strange yet fascinating experience. A platformer at heart, Pikuniku takes players to a dystopian future rendered in their simplistic but undeniably charming art style. Consisting of flat hues, irregular geometric citizens, and wobbly appendages, it's an endearing puzzler whose oddness will only get you begging for more.

It earns ratings of 8.07 on the PC and a provisional score of 7.73 on the Switch.

Known as the metal gear of the skies, Ace Combat's return is marked with even more anime-like dialog and storylines, performed in their character's charmingly hammy way. Where this 7th installment really shines though is the fast-paced action of their air combat flight simulations. This latest game even enhances the immersion on the PS4 with its VR implementations.

While it's bogged down by some technical problems on the PC with 7.96, it's a great success on other platforms with ratings of 8.17 on the PS4, and 8.11 on the Xbox One.

11. Catherine Classic

Another remaster for the books, this time from the PlayStation 2 days. A classic from CAPCOM their iconic series returns to bring us back to a world of samurai adventures. Made for that trip down memory lane, Warlords will seem extra familiar for fans of the original with all its addictive hack and slash action.

Keeping many of its more annoying quirks though, some gamers and critics weren't satisfied with this modernization, giving it a score of 8.25 on the PS4, 8.03 on the PC, 7.40 on the Xbox One, and 7.21 on the Switch.

9. Downwell

Impressing on the PS4 and the PC, this indie platformer by Moppin likewise made waves on the Switch--though with the lack of user reviews, it's a little less obvious. With its roguelike structure, we all wondered how it would play on the Switch's tiny joycons. Thankfully the worried were addressed thanks to the console's many control options that let us optimize it according to our preferences.

Successfully translating the challenge and charm of the indie hit on the hybrid console, it earns a rating of 8.31.

8. My Time At Portia

Paying tribute to the pioneers of the farm life RPG in a brand new way, Pathea's My Time at Portia not only expands the genre with their 3D visuals but also in its consuming open-world setting. Less about farming and more about building and battling, it's a delightfully unique spin that kind of combines the best parts of Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, Minecraft into one.

Though there are some criticisms about its crafting times, it's still a stellar game with a rating of 8.32.

7. Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition on the PS4, PC, Xbox One and Switch

A celebration of its 10th anniversary, Bandai Namco brought back the power struggles of its 10th mainline entry with a renewed and refined edition. Already a classic JRPG title, its beloved cast is joined by two new playable characters in Patty Fleur and Flynn Scifo. Aside from new characters, the biggest draw for this definitive edition is the full voice acting which only serves to make the world feel more alive than ever.

A JRPG remaster done right it has a playscore of 8.52 on the PS4, 8.25 on the PC, 8.12 on the Xbox One and 8.33 on the Switch.

6. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey

A different kind of Mario Brothers adventure, Bowser's Inside Story follows the two plumbing superstars on an RPG quest to rescue Princess Peach while seeing the Mushroom Kingdom from the perspective of the angry King Koopa and combine their trio's skills to battle against awful Fawful. A 3DS remake that succeeds in bringing the combat and excitement of the original to the stage, along with some decent additions, it has a playscore of 8.53.

5. Realm Royale on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

Hi-Rez Studios pivot towards the new and trendy Battle Royale genre might not be doing too well on the PC, it looks like it is working its magic--at least somewhat--on the PS4 and Xbox One. Featuring the heroes of their hero shooter Paladins, enter the arena and compete in the same 1 vs 100 type gameplay we've now come to love.
