10. Realm Royale on PS4 and Xbox One

Hi Rez studios makes the pivot towards the trendy Battle Royale genre with this new title. Featuring the heroes of their hero shooter Paladins, enter the arena and compete in the same 1 vs 100 type gameplay we've now come to love. But, while most of their games have enjoyed a degree of success, Realm Royale is struggling to keep their playerbase.

Still offering a world of content in a free to play format, there's been a lot of pushback in terms of the game's gameplay resulting from its subsequent patches. Not doing all too well on the PC, the reception has somewhat warmed up with the release on the consoles last January. It gets a Provisional PlayScore of 8.38 on the PS4 and 7.44 on the Xbox One

9. Apex Legends on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

EA may not be the best videogame company right now, but this fresh take on the Battle Royale genre really puts their name on the field again. Apex Legends is a spin-off to the critically acclaimed first person shooter from Respawn, Titanfall. Similar to most BR games, players team up and survive in their 3-man squad. Be the last one standing to become the Apex Champion. Select from a wide variety of multiple heroes with unique abilities to turn the tide of battle.

With its responsive ping system, the game’s accessible communication is seamless. As a free-to-play game, Microtransactions are at its peak. Players can unlock new heroes by using in-game currency, or Apex Coins to purchase them. It’s recent Battle Pass also offers new outfits, weapon skins and badges for other players. The game is still fun without using real money, and that’s why Apex Legends excels at. It has a PlayScore of 8.58 on the PC, 8.57 on the PS4, and 8.0 on the Xbox One.

8. Honor And Duty: D-Day

Once again, a Battle Royale game on this list. Although not entirely. This free-to-play first person shooter takes you to the horrific events of the D-Day Landing in World War II. This brings back the old-school FPS action to the PlayStation VR. Packed with multiple modes, players can choose which type of action they want to get their hands into: Team Deathmatch, Domination and its 32 player Battle Royale.

Just like Call of Duty and other acclaimed military shooters, this VR experience lets you drive tanks, jeeps, and trucks in large scale maps as you stalk your enemies and eliminate them. It’s not the smoothest game on this list, per se, but it does offer a fun time-wasting experience for you and your friends. It receives a PlayScore of 8.68

7. DISSIDIA: FINAL FANTASY NT FREE VERSION

The ultimate Final Fantasy crossover fighting game experience. DISSIDIA NT is the next step to the future of the Dissidia franchise. The mechanics are still the same, and the rules are unchanging. However, you get to face off against other major FF characters in three-on-three fashion, not the usual one on one experience.

Choose from a wide selection of iconic Final Fantasy characters including Cloud Strife, Squall Leonhart, Lightning and even Noctis from FFXV. However, as the game excels in its combat and other major gameplay improvements, it fails in its content and optimization. The game is EXPENSIVE as hell for a free game. To unlock more characters, players need to purchase Microtransaction Character Packs that cost a ton. It causes a major divide in the community, and not to mention its terrible performance issues. The PS4 version, however, is really good. So you better think twice before buying a PC port. It has a PlayScore of 8.77 on the PS4.

6. Enderal: Forgotten Stories

Ok, this one's a bit of cheat. A mod to Elder Scrolls' fifth installment, Enderal isn't completely free. But, for people that already have Skyrim--and, at this point, who doesn't?--Enderal is a brand new experience that just happens to sit on top of an already existing game. A total conversion of the game we've loved for years, could very well be your next favorite RPG, with its own landscape, lore and loot. As for lore, its been praised for the complexity of its narrative, bringing out emotions and reactions that even some of today's biggest games can't. Offering an open world RPG experience and a whole new storyline separate from the Elder Scrolls series for absolutely free, it's clear from the get-go the kind of passion they have for the project. An emotional and deeply immersive RPG on top of an RPG, it has a PlayScore of 8.84

5. When the Darkness comes

We all loved the quirky existentialism of Stanley Parable, with its sardonic narrator and oddball adventures. But in this new free-to-play walking simulator, it almost feels like we meet Stanley Parable's evil twin. Taking it up on itself to tackle the deep seated issues of depression, anxiety, and abuse in videogame form, the dark tales of When The Darkness Comes are immersive and unsettling.

Described by many as a beautifully haunting adventure, Developer Sirhaian warns players with mental health problems to steer clear. With a little over ten chapters, the game gives voice to their many struggles in a way that puts people in their sometimes scary shoes. For a game that's completely free, it feels like a lovingly crafted albeit traumatizing masterpiece. Handcrafted by developer Sirhaian, there's plenty to discover. And the best part is, you can return to it again and again. It has a Provisional PlayScore of 9.05.

4. Unsung Warriors - Prologue

More of a demo than an actual game, this Prologue to Osarion's indie adventure does give players a worthwhile look at what's to come. A 2D game set in a fictional European Iron Age, Unsung Warriors is packed with both fun platforming and engaging combat. Putting on a simple, cartoony artstyle, it might not be the best in looks but it does work well in adding to the fun Iron Age atmosphere while also making it accessible to even the most low-end laptops and devices.

What makes the game even more appealing is the addition of a local co-op mode that lets you fight side by side with friends. While still just a demo, Prologue is one of the best at showing just exactly what's in store for their backers. With more updates and features in their full release, there's a lot of fun to be had roaming around in their action-packed dungeons. It has a rating of 9.07

3. Fate/Grand Order VR feat. Mash Kyrielight

A special Fate/Grand Order adventure made exclusively for their fans on the PS VR. F/GO, a premier free-to-play RPG on the mobile, expands their reach as they explore the world of console VR. Taking the lead in this drama is Mash Kyrielight, the series' heroine who comes by to her Senpai's room to ask for advice. And, yes, that Senpai is you. Playing the role of Master to the loyal servant, it unfolds an interesting series of events that's a far cry from the usual RPG antics. Aside from Mash, it also features the legendary King Arthur turned servant, Altria. Adding a dash of Summer Lesson to the anime excitement, bond with the girls and get to know them in a different light. First released in Japan with no localization, the Western fans have finally gotten a taste of the unique activities that the platform brings. It has a Provisional PlayScore of 9.17

2. What Never Was

Still in the first person perspective, Acke Hallgreen gives us something a little bit more traditional. With a focus on exploration in their fascinating and magical environments, What Never Was would probably fall pass of as another simulator. But in their short, story driven adventure, there lies an array of puzzles that will the minds who ever embarks on it. Featuring stellar voice acting and an engrossing narrative, time definitely flies.

Which is a bit of a shame, considering the game's length running just under an a hour depending on your puzzle skills. Maddeningly short as some reviewers would put it, What Never Was might leave you wanting more but it has no shortage of charm. A free Steam game that's made entirely to please, it's definitely worth every unspent penny and more. It has a rating of 9.5

1. Path of Exile

First released on the PC last 2013, it took a while for Path of Exile to reach the consoles. But, now that it's finally on the PS4, it looks like there's still plenty of love for the free-to-play MMO. As GameSpot would put it in their review of the PC debut, Path of Exile will only cost you your internet bandwidth and in exchange, you get a vast amount of hack and slashy RPG content.

Taking inspiration from the equally legendary ARPG, Grinding Gear Games expanded on the isometric dungeon crawling with on-line activities that, at the time, felt like an improvement over the rock beginnigs of Diablo III. Carving its own name into the ARPG A-list, it's still going strong today as a free to play title that's also free from the hassle of paywalls. A little daunting for beginners, there's no reason NOT to check it out, with an impressive score of 9.93

A mesmerizing indie platformer from Team17 that takes you to a hostile planet with mystery and danger.
12. Dandara

Another indie metroidvania game on the list. Developed by Long Hat House, Dandara is a fantastic adventure. Step inside the shoes of their brave heroine, and guide her through the twists and turns of her gravity defying world. It pays tribute to the timeless classics with its pixel-perfect landscapes. One of the best things about this game is it retains the charm and tropes of the retro era--mixing innovation into the gameplay alongside its dizzying and directionless universe.

Although not without its flaws, it’s controls might be a let-down for some, but it’s fancy visuals and tight soundtrack is a feast for disoriented senses. It has a PlayScore of 7.77

7. Forgotton Anne

Steeped in the wonders of magic realism, Forgotten Anne tells tales of a world where objects take sentience. Seeing it through the eyes of anne, we get to decoding the strange phenomena as she herself takes on her journey home.
6. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon

A retro platformer that wears their inspiration on their sleeves. If you're still on the lookout for a Castlevania alternative for the modern platforms, this just might be it. Bringing in the convincing and impressively detailed 8bit visuals, Inti Creates made the perfect loveletter to the classic series. Earning a whopping 10/10 on Steam, Curse of the Moon earned praise for its branching storylines, solid platforming, and endless replayability. More of a tribute, it doesn't add anything new to the original platforming, but it's a notable recreation that comes with a large serving of nostalgia. It has a PlayScore of 8.45

5. Mega Man 11

While we're on the subject of classics, here's one from the original platform superstar. Coming quite a long way from its 1987 origins, Mega Man 11 culminates everything we loved about the series in a fancy new package. Capcom brings back the blue robot in a refreshing 2.5D aesthetic that merges old and new sensibilities into one. Might take some getting used to at first, but from the looks of things, the visual tweak served to add a sense of novelty to an otherwise familiar title. Making up for a mashup of their original formula, it comes strong with the double gear system and a heightened difficulty curve. It has a PlayScore of 8.46

4. Iconoclasts

Uncover the secrets of a dying planet and join the renegade mechanic, Robin, in this interesting metroidvania game from Joakim Sandberg. Putting on the ever-popular retro skin for that full platoforming vibe, Iconoclasts takes us on a field trip of old tricks of tropes with a colorful world rife with old-timey aesthetics. Not just a platformer, it also offers a dash of extra action with a its shooting gameplay. Offering a less than perfect narrative experience, its the gameplay that makes Iconoclasts truly shine. Getting comparisons to Yacht Club Games' Shovel Knight, it evokes the same kind of nostalgia while adding a slew of new features to the mix. A PlayScore of 8.55

3. Yoku's Island Express

Villa Gorilla's action platformer is a union of unlikely genres. Set in a sprawling 2D open world, Yoku takes you on an a metroidvania tour of ancient caverns in--get this--pinball fashion. Bouncing players around from one end to the next, it's a unique adventure experience that, for some reviewers, definitely enhances the genre's usual meandering pace. On top of its charming visuals and overall presentation, it also offers engaging puzzles, with each area always ripe with secrets to scour for. It has a PlayScore of 8.64

2. Dead Cells

Live and die, and live and die again. Even with its insane jumble of genres, Motion twin's indie roguelike metroidvania hack and slash hits the target on all of them. Inspired the by the vastly different but action packed titles like Binding of Isaac and Team Fortress, Dead Cells became a hit both for its satisfying combat and addictive roguelike mechanics. Making sure there's always surprises in each run, it manages to be rewarding no matter how many times you play. Creating a fun environment for roguelike repetition, it has a score of 9.03

1. And the best PC Platformer is Celeste

Bagging award after award last year, Celeste is a recent favorite among the crop of exquistely crafted indie platformers. A fusion of platforming and storytelling bigwigs, Towerfall Ascension's Matt Thorson and Skytorn's Noel Berry teamed up to create a game that both punished and inspired. Dealing with tough issues like mental health, Celeste tells the story of Madeleine's treacherous climb to self-discover. The mountain is the metaphor, so to speak, and it’s a big and memorable one at that. Playing to their simple but inventive contro, it’s both a dexterity tester and heartwarmer in one agets a PlayScore of 9.15

15 Best Platformer PC Games of 2018-2019

This month, Shallot Games offers the gaming community with Sprout: Idle Garden, an idle clicker that is unlike any other in the market today. If you haven’t found that clicker game you enjoy, this might just change your mind.

What makes it so different? The gameplay is much more involved than other idle clickers -- it’s practically a garden simulator! Here, you get to decide exactly how your garden looks and exactly what kind of garden you want to have, whether it be a communal garden or the best floral farm ever. It hasn’t been long since Sprout has been released, but those who have played it will let you know that it’s the game you should play on your downtime.

We were given the privilege to have a little chat with one of Shallot Games’ co-founder, Reid Scarboro, the game development team behind this zen clicker.

Raine: Ever since Sprout: Idle Garden caught our eye, we have been extremely intrigued about Shallot Games. Can you tell us more about your development team? How long have you guys been developing games?

Reid: It’s just my brother Brad and myself, as far as the full-timers go! Personally, I’ve been making games since I was about 13, starting in Game Maker, though it was mostly exploratory/a hobby at the time. We founded Shallot Games together in 2014 when we decided we wanted to try to turn game development into careers. Since then we’ve been steadily growing our games and our skill-sets, with probably the biggest jump being with Vista Golf in 2017, which we were fortunate enough to have featured on the App Store. Today, we are extremely excited about the launch of Sprout and can’t wait to continue making games that people will hopefully love!

Raine: What made you want to start developing games on the mobile?

Reid: For whatever reason, I’ve always loved handheld electronics. I owned a few palm pilots in elementary school (my life was obviously very complicated in 5th grade, with many meetings, play dates, and pretend weddings to keep up with), and of course, was obsessive about all of Nintendo’s handhelds (still growing the collection today). I wanted to make games for these pieces of technology that I’ve loved for so long, and we currently value the huge number of people who have access to our games.

Raine: Before Sprout, you developed platformers Luma’s Odyssey and Gap Cat, and golf games Vista Golf, Putthole and Vista Golf Rivals. What made you, pardon the pun, tap into idle clickers?

Reid: Gap Cat was made in the wake of Flappy Bird-style games and was our first commercial release. Though it wasn’t pushing the bar at all, we learned a huge amount about the process, which has enabled us to find success in the games that followed. Luma’s Odyssey was a game I created with 5th-grade students at a local school - my girlfriend (Victoria, who will later appear in Sprout) is the art teacher there, and we thought it would be a cool/rewarding project, for both us and the kids. The kids came up with all of the themes and drew the pixel art on graph paper, I translated their art and ideas into the game. For Sprout, we actually didn’t start with building an idle game, I like to think of it as a builder/simulation game first. We knew we wanted to have flowers, enable the player’s creativity, and create a calming environment. The idle mechanics paired very well with all of those things, as they usually tend to remove any stress occasionally found in other genres.

Raine: At the start of the game, we are greeted with a dedication to a certain someone named Victoria.
“For Victoria, who paints the world with color” Was she the person who inspired you to make the game? Please tell us the story of how Sprout: Idle Garden came to be.

Reid: Victoria is indeed the inspiration for the game, I created the game for her. She is my lovely girlfriend of a little over three years. Sprout was originally meant to be a Christmas gift (missed that mark by a solid 3 months), though as it evolved, we realized we wanted to flesh the game out a bit more and do a full release. She is an incredibly creative and empathetic artist, who loves flowers, and works very hard in her multiple jobs. I was hoping to capture some of the things that she values and wrap it in a very calming/almost meditative package. The game has come quite a long way since it’s very first playable version. We realized we wanted to share this with a wider audience, as Victoria is certainly not the only one who appreciates an occasional break from the stresses of work, or the beauty that exists in all of the flowers of the world.

Raine: Sprout: Idle Garden is currently only available on iOS, will there be an Android port coming out soon?

Reid: Yes, we plan to launch early access on Android very soon, stay tuned!

Raine: Lastly, are you working on other games now? What other games can we expect from Shallot Games?

Reid: We are taking the MVP (minimum viable product) approach to Sprout. This means we released a very basic version of the game, and plan to release frequent updates based on player feedback to ensure we’re building the game that people want. So for now, we are 100% Sprout. That being said, we have no shortage of other game ideas that we are super excited to get started on!

Thank you so much for your time, Reid! We look forward to what Shallot Games has for us in the future!

iOS-exclusive Sprout skyrocketed into the top of our list in the last month primarily due to its innovative approach to the idle clicker mechanics. Raine chats with the Reid Scarboro, the cofounder of Shallot Games to discuss Sprout and the next steps for the dev studio.
