25. Hawken

It might be gone from the PC, but this free to play title is thankfully still serving Mech shooting action on the PlayStation 4. Playing like a blend of Overwatch and Titanfall, take part in team-based PvP competition in any one of their hulking mechs. Size doesn't matter in this game, promising fast-paced action whatever type you choose. As a free to play title, you may encounter some microtransactions along the way as you choose the perfect mech to bring to the dystopian battlefield.

It has a playscore of 7.35.

24. Trove

World of Minecraft, amirite? Kidding aside, Trove is a popular choice these days for bringing together voxel survival adventures together with classic MMORPG tropes. Play according to your chosen roles and fantasies and go on various quests around the vast, blocky universe. It's a world that's brimming with excitement--at least in short bursts. Criticized for being a little repetitive, it's still a fun free-to-play MMO you can enjoy with friends.

A playscore of 7.39.

23. H1Z1: Battle Royale

Bluehole might've already brought PUBG to the PS4, but there's nothing quite like having the original on your console. More importantly, though, let's be honest, it's free-to-play. A standalone entry from the H1Z1 experience, this Battle Royale game sticks true not just to the classic King of the Hill formula, but also to the look and feel that everyone fell in love with. If you're sick of fumbling to form a new fort, H1Z1's BR formula is a nice return to the vanilla experience.

It has a playscore of 7.54.

22. Defiance 2050

Calling this a remaster of Trion Worlds' 2013 MMO might be accurate; it's also a little generous. Offering a modern friendly experience compared to the original, with a few tweaks to gameplay and a fancy coat of paint, Defiance 2050 appeals to players with a love for open-world environments, co-op missions, and emergent gameplay.

It has a playscore of 7.54.

21. Crossout

Targem Games’ MMO Action game takes you on a Mad Max-like experience with explosions and vehicular mayhem. Dominate the post-apocalyptic landscape with your own heavily customized armored masterpiece and tear your enemies to shreds. And of course, the vehicular action isn't complete with their straightforward but intense PvP battles. Giving players plenty of choices for weapons and hardware in those classic microtransactions, it's always fun and satisfying to build a monster out of scratch.

It has a playscore of 7.54.

20. Star Trek Online

All good things come to an end. Not Star Trek though. Still going strong decades after its pilot episode, this generation's Trekkies are lucky to be in the same period as Cryptic Studios MMORPG. Putting players in the august Captain's chair, venture through the final frontier and discover infinite beauties of the universe's infinite combinations. It even features characters of the Star Trek movies and series from then until now. Free as it is, you might have to shell out some points to get some of your favorite ships and races.

It has a score of 7.57.

19. TERA

A title that could rival the giants of the MMO genre. First released on the PC in 2012, TERA's vast and detailed open world has continued to impress players far and wide in their much recent move to the consoles. Although it is understandably showing some age-related wrinkles like their repetitive grinding, it is a faithful port of the action combat MMORPG it was on the PC--albeit one year behind. The Big Ass Monsters aren't as big and scary anymore but ripping them to shreds is as addictive as ever.

It has a playscore of 7.61.

18. Dreadnought

Travelling around the galaxy is one thing, but designing your own ship is another thing when it comes to YAGER’s tactical, team-based space warfare. As an outlaw captain, fulfill your rewards as you take down enemy ships, travel to new battlefields and befriend other players. Being at the helm of a gigantic spaceship in their cinematic cosmos is already delight on its own, but the strategy that each fight entails definitely adds to it. Purchase your own fleet of ships, and open your horizons with each upgrade.

It has a score of 7.66.

17. Dark Eclipse

As any ordinary MOBA, take control of three leaders and use their skills to take down enemy structures on the battlefield of Oldus. What makes this game special though is its use of virtual reality. Perfectly optimized for the platform, Sunsoft's Dark Eclipse may be first of the successful VR MOBAs. Aside from its unique medium, it has garnered praise from MOBA and RTS fans for its attention to detail and continuous updates.

A sleeper hit, it has a playscore of 7.67.

16. Let It Die

These days we all have that hunger pang for death and all its gorey beauty. Grasshopper Manufacture's free to play hack and slash certainly does the trick. Enter the mysterious Tower of Barbs and partake in the ultraviolence that awaits you in over 40 floors of tireless combat. While it feels a little old school in some, Let It Die is an enjoyable mishmash of Mortal Kombat gnarliness and Souls-like combat. Dying in those higher levels might be a little painful for your wallet in though.

It has a playscore of 7.68.

This open world is set in a post nuclear Boston that is filled with memorable characters, multiple branching stories, and an all-consuming base-building feature. Play as a concerned dad in search for his missing son. The story goes crazy from there and it welcomes you to the biggest Fallout world since 76.

Make tough decisions along the way and complete numerous quests and side-quests to power-up your character. Customize your weapons, grab some Power Armor, and get ready to survive the radioactive wasteland while listening to classic pre-apocalyptic tunes.

Rising up through the technical glitches and dialog disappointments, it finally lives up to its RPG shooter name. It has a playscore of 8.48.

6. Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor

Monolith’s take on the Middle-Earth mythos was unexpected, but a welcome treat. Set years before the War of the One Ring, step into the shoes of a Ranger Talion as he goes on a quest to avenge her murdered family. Together with the One Ring’s creator, Celebrimbor, travel to the mystical lands of Mordor in search for answers.

Mixing action-RPG with hack and slash combat, embrace in its slick and stylish gameplay that really makes you feel like a boss. Combined with the Wraith powers of Celebrimbor, you are an unstoppable threat to Orc and other creatures that get in your way. It’s a satisfying first entry to the Middle-Earth series, and it’s a shame it’s never canon. It has a playscore of 8.53.

5. Dragon Age: Inquisition

BioWare’s bold step to continue the Dragon Age saga wasn’t that bad, fortunately. Return to the magical lands of Thedas and stop a mysterious dark magic from taking over the world. As the Inquisitor, you are tasked to save the living from its corruption. Gather allies, friends, and embark on a grand journey filled with heartwarming moments and unforgettable characters.

Choose from its wide selection of classes and unleash your full potential as you take down vicious threats in its stunning yet broken world.

We have to admit, we’re pretty scared with BioWare’s direction with EA right now. With Anthem’s failure, it’s gonna take a whole lot of quality work to get us hyped for Dragon Age 4. It receives a playscore of 8.56.

4. Dark Souls III

It’s a shame Bloodborne couldn’t make it to this list. Hidetaka Miyazaki’s morbid creation of darkness and insanity comes into full form in this third and possibly the final entry of the Souls series.

Experience videogame hell because this is the biggest Dark Souls game to date. Topple down well-designed monsters and face off against angry and cursed Kings and Dragons because this game isn’t child’s play. Use your wide array of items and weapons to extinguish these souls and banish them from the world. It’s expansions add two massive DLC’s in its stead, so ready yourself for more hair-pulling moments and satisfying git gud moments. It receives a playscore of 8.56.

3. Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition

It’s sad to think where the series is going right now. Blizzard did a dirty on this beloved franchise that sparked a brand new genre catered to hardcore A-RPG fans. The Diablo series has gone through tremendous changes over the years. It had its ups and downs.

If you want to take a break from the major stress from the other Blizzard games, then this action-RPG is determined to sink you hours and hours of good time. Jump into the dark dungeons to loot rare items, slay evil demons and survive a dastardly difficult roguelike experience. This definitive edition is a culmination of years of improvements into one package, Ultimate Evil edition includes the Reaper of Souls expansion and livens it up with 1080p resolutions in 60 FPS. It has a playscore of 8.69.

2. NieR: Automata - BECOME AS GODS Edition

There is something oddly intriguing about Yoko Taro’s spin-off of the Drakengard series. Whether it’s the post-apocalyptic world filled with extraterrestrial robots, or your main character 2B fighting her enemies while wearing a silky doll dress. These are but of the first of the many questions you’ll be asking yourself in this solid JRPG from Square Enix.

Save humanity from its impending doom and take the role of an Android unit designed to follow orders. From here, it’s a rollercoaster ride of existential crisis. Its stylish hack and slash combat may distract you from its deep and layered story, but its series of multiple endings will suck you into its narrative void. BECOME AS GODS Edition is the definitive NieR: Automata experience as it contains all the major DLC’s since day one. It receives a playscore of 8.96.

1. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

Follow the story of Geralt of Rivia in his quest to find the Sword of Destiny, Ciri. This epic adventure is high-fantasy at its finest. Take down ferocious beasts of nature or partake in a political conspiracy against the game’s medieval setting.

With its open world wonder, travel to various lands teeming with evil. Use Geralt’s unique Witcher abilities and stalk any predator who comes in your way. Slay monsters using your Silver Sword and collect that bountiful reward. Rife with quality writing and a fantastic soundtrack, it’s a true RPG experience from start to finish. It receives a playscore of 9.11.

10. Geometry Dash World

From the heat of Meltdown and the freezing points of SubZero, Robtop Games spices up the world of Geometry Dash with a little bit of everything. Back with the same bass-popping rhythm formula, World concerns itself with a sense of wonder and adventure. But, like most Geometry Dash games, it's still no walk in the park. Back with even more dangers and obstacles littered in their two worlds, with five levels each. Play the strange geometric creature and navigate through rounds of sharp thorns, gaps, and deadly traps.

Using their intuitive controls, flex your fingers and test your dexterity as you fly rockets, flip gravity, and so much more. Other than the given levels, Geometry Dash World also has a few online levels created by the folks of the Geometry Dash community.

An action-based platformer packed with songs from Dex Arson, Waterflame, and F-777, it has a provisional playscore of 9.2

9. Muse Dash

Now you might be thinking you're on the wrong video. If you're looking for rhythm in your games, Muse Dash has just the right kind of action. While it might not look like your run of the mill tapping rhythm game, XD Network makes sure you'll need a groove to navigate their sidescrolling universe. Enter the arena as one of their many beauties and work towards fixing their world tampered by a mirror image code--whatever that is.

Combining action and rhythm, nimble fingers and dance moves are the number one requirements in Muse Dash. Watch their adorable monsters make their way towards you and whack to the beat of their track. With 30 popular songs on offer, each one will be presented in their own individual styles, scenes, enemies, and bosses. And that's still not counting their stellar voice acting. Not a free to play title, it's supported with updates which continually bring fresh content.

It has a rating of 9.4

8. Cytus II

Any rhythm game enthusiast worth their salt will recognize this particular jumble of letters. Released just last 2018, Rayark Studios follows up their immensely popular rhythm game with an awesome new sequel. Still keeping up with the dystopian feels of their first game, Cytus II is pretty much more of everything we loved about the original. Crafted by the same team, dive once more into their cyber world of internet developments and severed connections.

Revolving around a rave party gone wrong, prepare for an electric experience through their maddening EDM tracks. Their rhythm game mechanics are naturally still presented in Rayark's signature satisfying chaos. Tap and slide your way through each of their songs and do it all over again to get that sweet high score high. When you've gone through all of them, you can expect more content to come in the form of new DLCs.

It has a score of 9.4

7. Lanota

With the saturated market for rhythm games, creators are hardpressed to create a unique yet still familiar rhythm experience. And that's what Noxy Games achieved in their title Lanota. Instead of the usual vertical falls of beats, Lanota distinguishes itself from the rest with their circular console. Keep your eyes open as you take on the challenge of their ethereal music. With their golden plate, Lanota keeps faithful to the magical, dream-like atmosphere of their storyline.

Presenting a charming, storybook-like universe, the plot revolves around another quest to cleanse it of chaos and restore the balance of the old order. The game may be free to play, but it only serves as a sampler of what's to come in their paid full version offered within the game itself. By paying the premium price, you get to have an ad-free experience and their much-needed retry function.

It has a provisional playscore of 9.4

6. Arcaea - New Dimension Rhythm Game

This rhythm game from developer lowiro is exploring new dimensions in more ways than one. Talking of getting lost in the songs of light and conflict, Arcaea also jumps out of the ordinary plane of 2D, into the three dimensions of arcs of light. Blending ordinary tile gameplay with their unique 3D rays which you can swipe according to the rhythm. As an arcade-style rhythm game, it still exudes the same kind of atmosphere as some of Rayark's more colorful titles--except jampacked with soothing soundtracks but equally beautiful anime backdrops.

Arcaea has no shortage of songs either. From 50 artists across the globe, it has a library of over 90 songs each of which you can play in 3 rhythm difficulties. And if that's not enough, it will keep on expanding with each content update. Compete with friends online, conquer the leaderboards, and collect the melodic shards of Arcaea.

It has a playscore of 9.4

5. BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!

Truly made for anime fans. This anime rhythm-game from Bushiroad International is built for anyone with a love for Japanese culture, particularly in the area of cute waifu art and anime music. Covering songs from Japan's most popular, check out duke your tapping skills against their drop of iconic openings from the cute to the epic. While there are over 100 songs on offer, with varying difficulties, you can also play them against up to four other players. Not just any rhythm game though,

A unique rhythm experience tailor-made for the self-confessed otaku, it has a score of 9.4

4. Piano Tiles 2™(Don't Tap...2)

Efficiency in simplicity. Cheetah Games’ piano-like rhythm game is turning away from the colorful and picturesque backdrops, or with snazzy special effects of other similar titles. It puts into form its responsiveness… well, piano tiles. It’s one of the most popular Free Games on the App Store, and of course, it’s obvious why.

Choose from hundreds of songs both classic and modern. Test your mettle in its varying difficulty modes that actually gives a great challenge, especially for a tap-based game. It’s a sequel to the first game that also had some great moments. It still shares the same rule: Don’t tap the white tiles.

All songs are transformed into beautiful piano pieces which makes you feel like you’re in a concert. It has a provisional playscore of 9.40

3. Planet Quest

OutOfTheBit’s addictive rhythm game doesn’t rely on colored notes dropping down on the screen. Achieve science fiction craziness in this tap-based rhythm entry where you control a UFO hovering around planets.

To become the master of the universe, you must rely on your reflexes. Simply tapping with your finger won’t do you any good. Avoid the innocent creatures and begin tapping in sync with the beat. It takes a while to master and it’s multiple endless levels and difficulty spikes can make us frustrated.

Despite the tension and its fast-paced tunes, the game is really is easy to pick up. Unlock new songs by playing its levels like a boss, and maybe you can climb the Leaderboards and take over the entire cosmos.

It receives a provisional playscore of 9.55

2. Lyrica

To introduce something different in a rhythm game is something rare these days. It’s all about pressing the correct buttons, timing your notes right, and simply listen to the tunes. RNOVA Studio's Lyrica tries to combine the rhythm game genre with poetry, in addition to classically styled narratives.

Surprisingly, there’s a story here. Play as a young man who just wants to become a musician, then for some reason, he’s traveling to Ancient China. Interacting with mysterious poets. But like most musical titles, it has the same touch-based gameplay. Tap or swipe on lyrics that sync with the rhythm. It’s beautiful calligraphies add flavor to its wonderful poems.

It receives a provisional playscore of 9.59

1. SuperStar BTS

The boys of Bangtan have their own rhythm game in courtesy of Dalcomsoft. True stans of this 7-member boy band from South Korea will enjoy this collection of their iconic music. Jungkook, V, Rap Monster, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, and Jin will steal your hearts as they serenade you with their best songs.

Meet them in-game as you breeze through most of their popular songs such as IDOL, DNA, and more. You can even collect signed BTS member cards to show them off to your friends. Compete with other players in its competitive mode where you flex your ARMY reflexes and climb the leaderboards. It may not be for everyone, and non-ARMYs are gonna be annoyed to the core, but this game is ultimately designed for those hardcore stans.

It has a provisional playscore of 9.60

PlayPark has recently announced the release of a new trailer for their free-to-play zombie first-person shooter, Zombie Shooter2 - Death Hospital. Starting out like any ordinary horror trailer, its (overly) dramatic music and gunshots sets up the mood for the "tragic world of the dark hospital."

Every corner and every room you fight off the endless hordes of zombies for the fight of your life. There is no rest for the wicked after all.

While it might look your run of the mill mobile shooter, Zombie Shooter's distinguishes itself through its use of the gyro sensor. This means that players will navigate past the zombies of Death Hospital by using their phones to aim, and shooting with their thumbs. It's a one-hand shooting experience that might remind veteran players of the shooting games of the arcade era. And by the looks of the game, that might be their peg for the visuals too--whether intentionally or not.

Play at your own risk. We warn you that this game is highly addictive because of its rewarding, and action-packed gameplay.

Zombie Shooter - Death Hospital is currently available on Android as a free-to-play title on the Google PlayStore.

Remember when games came out complete with no strings attached? We do. The rise of mobile gaming and its inevitable muse, the freemium model, marked the end of those days. One of the things we have to thank for this is Microtransactions.

Microtransactions, a word that now evokes a dark tower silhouetted by a lightning bolt and backed by the mad laughter of an evil game developer. It all started innocently enough.

Coming to prominence in the age of free-to-play MMOs, profits that came from the purchases of cosmetics and in-game currency became the bread and butter of the genre. Over the years, this freemium business model has moved into the mobile sphere, most notably with King’s ubiquitous Candy Crush whose in-game microtransactions made up 92% of the game’s generated revenue in 2013.

These days, it’s not just mobile games and MMOs. The microtransaction model has crawled its way up the corporate ladder, reaching the ears of big names in the videogame industry, like EpicGames with the viral dances of Fortnite, to the more controversial loot boxes of Blizzard and Electronic Arts.

So what are the different kinds?

Of course, for a phenomenon that's grown more and more pervasive every year, Microtransactions come in many forms. We’ll focus on three main types and these are:

1. In-game Currencies

It's not surprising that each game has its own very special kind of currency. These, however, refer to currencies you can purchase with real-life cash. Whether its diamonds, gems, or coins, buying these usually grant players access to in-game conveniences for a price.

These are most common in mobile games. For example in Clash of Clans where you have to wait a certain amount of time to complete a given task or structure, players can opt out of the wait with a certain number of gems.

While you can earn these through battles and random prizes, it may take a very long time to accumulate enough for more or less continuous gameplay.

There is a psychological element at play here, too, which will be explained further in the next part.

2. In-game Items or Purchases

Who hasn't gone virtual window-shopping for cute-looking armor, pets, and mounts? Whether its merely for cosmetics or for a certain advantage, in-game items are basically things you can purchase and use within the game itself.

It would like the epic-looking stuff at the RPG shopkeeper's inn, but we could also broaden its scope to include the next chapters of an episodic game.

Random Chance Purchases

The type of microtransaction that will push you to roll the dice against lady luck for the slim chance of receiving that legendary item you've been dreaming of. Most of the time though, all you get is spare change. But that's not stopping you from trying again.

Random Chance Purchases (RCP) usually come in the form of crates, loot box, or bags. Their main similarity is that they hide their contents from the player and are decided less by individual fortune and more by whatever algorithm the developers choose (depending on how generous they are.)

Literally named after the vending machine capsule toys commonly found in Japan, gacha games are the most guilty of these types. Games like Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Puzzle & Dragons might come to mind, but these days you might also remember them from Overwatch, FIFA, and many of EAs titles.

More often than not, these loot boxes and treasure chests are offered free. But, that's when you have to be careful since you're a getting a taste of the thrill and the choice to get more is always dangled right in front of you. I mean, who doesn't like opening gifts, right? And that’s exactly what makes RCPs so controversial.

In fact, with such stark similarities to gambling, there are already movements for its regulation across the globe. In the US, there’s a proposed bill that bans selling loot boxes to minors and a scheduled hearing with the FTC; and in Europe, several countries are planning to officially declare them as gambling.

AAA Microtransactions are Evil! Why are they in my games?

Short answer? Because they work. And for the long answer, we have VOX doing some pretty good explaining, as always:

Using the viral popularity Pokemon Go as a jumpoff point, Vox explains how games exploit human psychology to get people to break out their wallets.

Cash vs Credit

Remember in-game currency? Well, apparently there's a reason they come in convoluted forms. VOX cites Candy Crush's credit to gold bar to lollipop exchange rate.

Because there are three layers of disconnect between your hard earned cash and the game's in-game currency, it separates you from the money you're spending compared to spending the same amount in cold hard cash. And, since these exchange rates are never, it makes it even harder to imagine how much you're actually spending.

Loss Aversion

People tend to experience unexpected losses more intensely than comparable gains.

Nobody likes pain. But with the freemium model, inconvenience is embedded everywhere you look, and getting out of them is easy enough, for the right price, VOX cites another game, Puzzle & Dragons, which prompts players at the crucial moment of dungeon death where you choose to either lose all your progress, and spend a magic stone to keep going. This also counts for the wait time mechanic in Clash of Clans (and maybe all the things we do on mobile MMOs to avoid the long grind.)

Whales

If you’re reading this with a big smirk on, pleased with the fact that you’ve never spent a penny on your games, you can wipe that straight off--you’re actually the majority. According to VOX, only 1.9 percent of mobile users make these in-app purchases and the few who do are called whales. They make up only 10 percent of the tiny percentage of mobile spenders but, like gambling addicts, they manage to dole upwards of a hundred dollars on the games they play.

So there you go. Whether or not you're a whale microtransactions have become an annoying part of the videogame world we live in. Now that they're there though, at least you know the kind of tricks they'll try to pull on you. Look out for those in-app purchases, and remember to keep your wallet (and credit card) safe!
