2. 12 Minutes

It’s no secret Indie games continue to push the boundaries of storytelling despite its limited resources. Published by Annapurna Interactive and developed by Luis Antonio, this interactive thriller takes place inside an apartment room that’s stuck in a twelve-minute time loop.

Its top-down perspective gives you more room to make decisions based on the clues found throughout their story. As a point-and-click title, there are multiple ways to approach each scenario and it’s up to you to put a stop to this unbreakable curse.

It takes inspiration from notable dream-like movies like The Shining, Rear Window, and even Christopher Nolan’s fragmented narrative structure of Memento. It’s slated for a 2020 release as a Microsoft exclusive.

3. Spiritfarer on PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC

A title from Thunder Lotus Games, sail around in the fable-like fantasy world as you build, explore, and gather resources for your journey. What's most striking about it is its seeming exploration of loss amidst its vibrant 2D art style.

The whole world of Spiritfarer is oozing with charm. Although it deals with highly emotional themes, Spiritfarer is a resource management game at its core. Customizing your boat and characters is a must to brave the somber seas. Throughout your voyage, make your own choices in its endlessly mystical waters.

It’s coming to the PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC sometime this 2020.

4. Carrion on PC and Xbox One

Dubbed as ‘reverse horror’, Carrion is a different kind of indie game where instead of running against supernatural threats, you’re the one doing the haunting and killing. Published by Devolver and developed by Phobia Game Studios, play as a living monstrosity assuming the form of a tentacle. Your goal is to stalk and consume those that are trapped within your grasp.

It combines high-octane physics-based platformer with Metroidvania elements. Mass is an important feature in the game. Your size matters as it unlocks important abilities that help you traverse unknown locations and proceed to the next level.

A 1-hour demo was released last month and most players enjoyed the feeling of gobbling up people. It comes out sometime this 2020 for the PC and Xbox One.

5.Little Nightmares 2 on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch

The Maw is ready to eat you once again in this sequel to Tarsier Studios’ horrifying puzzle-platformer. Announced at Gamescom 2019, there is little information we know about the game so far aside from its reveal trailer. One thing’s for sure, we know that Six, the iconic girl with the yellow raincoat, makes a return but she no longer remains playable.

The game’s main character centers around Mono, which was a protagonist from the previous title. This sequel will further explore the harrowing atmosphere of The Maw and what lies beyond this demented dimension. It’s coming out sometime this 2020 for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Switch.

6. Streets Of Rage 4 on PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One

25 years later and the legendary series comes back with a brand new episode. This is a sequel to SEGA’s iconic arcade brawler. Known for its ridiculous fights and jamming ‘90s beats, Streets of Rage 4 lets us relive the street-angst behind this cult classic.

A Love-Letter to classic JRPG titles like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and Valkyrie Profile, this time-bending adventure takes us into the life of the courageous Crisbell as she stops a powerful Time Empress from messing up the future. Master turn-based combat as you use the power of time to smack your enemies and warp them to the past, present and even future.
8. Pathless on PC and PlayStation 4

Revealed last year, this mythic adventure game from the creators of the beloved Abzu tells a whole new story about a lone archer with her pet Eagle. Giant Squid Studios’ use of nature is as breathtaking as it was in their previous game. Compared to Abzu’s underwater paradise, Pathless takes you to a vast forest slowly corrupted by darkness.

Throughout your journey, explore and uncover the secrets of the forest. Solve puzzles, test your skills in epic battles similar to Shadow of the Colossus and bond with your eagle. It’s bound for release sometime this 2020 on the PC and PS4.

9. Kerbal Space Program 2 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One

10. SkateBIRD on PC and Switch

The kind of games we never knew we needed. SkateBIRD is… well… a bird doing showing off some moves with its skateboard. Glass Bottom Games’ most-anticipated SkateBIRD-ing game is ready to revolutionize videogames as we know it.

Grind on bendy straws, kickflip over staplers and perform some killer lines through cardboard and sticky tape parks. There are no questions here, it’s just skateboarding, dude. Make every second of this bird’s live fun after his menial 9-5 job. Give him more purpose and teach him the ways of shredding. Jam through some low-fi bird tunes and continue the grind.

It comes out this Late 2020 for the PC and the Nintendo Switch.

We're taking a look at all the cool indie games coming to the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and the Switch in 2020. These are our picks for the most-anticipated independently produced titles next year.

10 Upcoming Indie Games

Microsoft is the clear underdog in the releases game but they're definitely trying their best to keep up. Visit our list of Upcoming Xbox One Titles for the full catalog.

1. Ori And The Will Of The Wisps

Ori may be one of Microsoft's very few exclusives but it also happens to be one that's universally loved by everyone. Developed by Moon Studios, Ori's first adventure introduced us to their knack for balancing effective Metroidvania platforming with a tight, moving storyline that left us in tears.

Will of the Wisps hopes to continue the legacy with a new story which finds the guardian spirit venturing out from their original magical forest to forge adventures in the world beyond. Based on their E3 presentations, it looks like it'll deliver on all its promises with more nimble movements and a host of new enemies to take down.

It's set to release on February 11th, 2020.

2. Watch Dogs: Legion

Legion doesn't fly too far in the future, but it's breaking boundaries by telling a story where every single person can take part in the burgeoning revolution. In this latest entry to the Watch Dogs series, Ubisoft paves the way for the dissolution of the NPC.

In their world, each one citizen is equipped with their own traits and skillsets to help in the fight--whether its grandma, the executive, or the chill skateboarder. The perma-death aspect of your recruits adds another layer of interest, as it might challenge you to take on a more careful, non-lethal approach to espionage.

It all sounds great on paper but we're yet to see how it all unfolds. Unfortunately, all of Ubisoft's biggest titles will be facing delays so we might have to wait till the second half of 2020.

3. Doom Eternal

It looks like Doomguy's arrival at the pearly gates is coming a little late. Delayed from their original November release date, a lot of people were disappointed but with so much loaded into one entry, it's easy to understand.

Doom is a franchise built around splitting open demonic heads. In Eternal, they're switching it up by inviting heaven's ugly multitudes to the party. With an expanded new world, Eternal's focus on mobility and freedom will come in handy in moving between dimensions. That, plus the new Invasions mode that lets you play the Demons themselves demonstrates an ambition that's worth a few more months of waiting.

It's coming out Mar 20, 2020.

4. Bleeding Edge

Blizzard is getting a little bit of competition with the coming of this team-based brawler from Ninja Theory. The studio has mostly focused on the singleplayer experience and now they're testing their mettle in the multiplayer scene.

Bleeding Edge is a mix of a brawler and MOBA gameplay, with teams of four battling to take control of bases and take down enemies. In the last X019, they showed us a 10-minute gameplay video of their new raptor-like character, Cass. With a roster of unique personalities, it's clear that Bleeding Edge is gonna be one hell of a competitive experience.

It's set to release on March 24th, 2020.

5. Cyberpunk 2077

Of course, one of the titles almost every gamer is looking forward to is this new IP from the makers of the Witcher series, CD Projekt Red. They've already set a new bar for fantasy action RPG, and we're all excited to experience what they have to offer the world of sci-fi FPS.

We've already seen a lot from their 48-minute gameplay. But with so much variety in their living and breathing Cyberpunk dystopia, we've only scratched the surface.

Create everything about your character, from their appearance, stats, background stories, and modifications. And then roam around Night City where Big Corporation is the law. Switching to the first-person perspective means that immersion will be at all-time high and we can't wait to sink hours upon hours into exploring every corner.

It's set to release on April 16th, 2020.

6. Dying Light 2

The first Dying Light game may have had earned success despite its narrative simplicity, Dying Light 2 will focus on giving players the definitive sandbox experience they wanted to bring in the first game. With this coming sequel, developer Techland aims to highlight player choices, giving them direct control over what happens in the story and the world around them.

Building on a brand new engine, The City in Dying Light 2, isn't just four times bigger, it will also react to whatever decisions you make along the way. And with the added mobility of the new protagonist, Aiden Caldwell, it also means more ways of dealing with the zombies of the night.

It's set to release in Spring 2020.

7. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Quarantine

Ubisoft's Tom Clancy series is taking on something kind of new. By going a few years into the future of their Rainbow Six universe, Quarantine is already delivering a different flavor as their teams fight against a mutating alien parasite.

We haven't seen much of the game aside from some their few teasers, but it's said to show off a brand new 3 player co-op which lets you get into gunplay and tactics with two other friends. As something that aims to be brand new, Ubisoft Montreal assures us that Quarantine will be a friendly place for newcomers to the series.

With an early 2020 release window, we're expecting to hear more soon.

8. Halo Infinite

Another one of Microsoft's few exclusives and it looks like it will mark the return of the much-admired Master Chief. While it was first announced in E3 2018, we finally got a lengthier dose of the title in E3 2019 with a 5 minute cinematic that announced itself as gameplay.

Unfortunately, there wasn't any in-game footage. In fact, there's little we know about Microsoft's upcoming title other than the fact that Master Chief is taking the lead once more, and that there won't be a Battle Royale mode unlike every other FPS today.

It's currently slated for a Holiday 2020 release window, and details about their beta-testing periods will hopefully come through soon.

9. Tales of Arise

It’s been a while since we had a new Tales game set in another world with new characters. Tales of Arise builds its foundations on a brand new engine, creating a mix of new and old into one game-changing installment. It sticks with the cel-shaded effect of their previous games while adding richer lighting and watercolor-like graphics.

From the looks of things, it certainly looks more immersive, letting us dive into their complex, twofold storyline set between two planets. There's been some promise of updated combat mechanics from Bandai Namco, but it's not quite as obvious in their previous. Hopefully, we do see it once it comes out sometime in 2020.

10. Crossfire X

There are plenty of names in the FPS market, but at least in some parts of Asia, there's none as big as Crossfire. Well-loved on the PC, Microsoft is bringing the game exclusively to the Xbox One as Crossfire X. Along with its entrance to the platform comes a slew of improvements that will enhance the shooting experience.

It's still going to be a free-to-play experience but it comes loaded with features like aim down sights shooting and a battle royale mode. Microsoft's X019 even gave us a deeper look into gameplay. With Remedy, the developers of Max Payne and Alan Wake, working on its solo campaign of Global Risk vs Black List gives the game even more promise.

There's no definite release window yet, but we can expect it to drop sometime in 2020.

11. Microsoft Flight Simulator

Flight Simulator was the throwaway reveal in Microsoft's E3 presentation but it was anything but forgettable. A game that has its beginnings in the 70s, Flight Simulator makes a landing in the new generation with a hangar-full of new features and improvements.

For a game that needs realism to work, Microsoft gave this their signature superstar treatment, cranking the environments, scale, and physics to eleven. With 4K support to boot, this gonna be the breathtaking simulation to beat and it's coming out in 2020.

12. Battletoads

Honestly, this new Battletoads game feels like a fish out of water in this list of gems. But, we gotta hand it to Microsoft for even having the balls to actually remake one of the longest-running videogame memes.

Battletoads first won our hearts in the 90s, establishing itself as one of the hardest, most frustrating games of its time. And thus, spawning a meme and TV show on the side. Rare's attempt at a revival isn't exactly all that compelling with its weird looking art style. However, with its arrival to the Xbox Game Pass, it's definitely one to pick up for some couch party chaos.

It's been to due release in 2019 for a while now so if it doesn’t we should expect it at the nearest Gamestop soon into 2020.

13. Grounded

Also announced at the X019, this new game from the makers of Pillars of Eternity, Fallout: New Vegas, and recently, Outer Worlds, explores a world that's completely different from their previous creations. Taking a page out of Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Grounded follows the story of four kids shrunken down to ant size in the name of science.

While it isn't the run of the mill fantasy RPG if there's one thing we know about Obsidian, it's how they can deliver a fantastic narrative in even the most outlandish premises. Turning the small world into a vast, towering ecosystem of monstrosities, there's already a lot of promise in the game and we can't wait to see it this Spring.

14. Age of Empires IV

Also getting some time in the X019 spotlight is the latest installment to Microsoft's Age of Empire's series. The first main entry in more than ten years, the much-awaited sequel is in good hands as the makers of the equally esteemed RTS Company of Heroes has signed on for the job. Relic Entertainment is lending their expertise, and the first good news we received is that there's gonna be no microtransactions in their watch.

The game was announced last 2017, but the X019's presentation showed us footage of the game's pre-alpha gameplay. Compared to previous entries, Age 4 shows off an expanded era, which means a lot more factions, units, and nations to play with.

They're stirring a lot of excitement but sadly no release date yet.

15. Everwild

Microsoft pulled out all the stops in the recent X019. Other than their many deals and discounts, Rare also stepped up to announce their brand new IP. Details about this new game are still pretty hard to come by but their announcement trailer will pique the interest of many adventure fans.

Like an opening to the Lion King, Everwild welcomes us into a world that's natural yet seemingly magical. Filled with golden hour rays of the sun, quiet nighttime scenes, and charming creatures.

In recent interviews, Rare was quoted saying they want to create engaging, meaningful experiences and brand new ways to play. Even though the details are sparse, players have gone on to compare it with Nintendo's Breath of the Wild. Hopefully, Rare delivers.

The Microsoft console survives another year. Here are our picks for the most anticipated titles coming to the Xbox One in 2020.

10. Angry Birds Dream Blast

We're starting off slow with a look at what the puzzle genre has to offer. Seeing as it's an Angry Birds title, we'll know it has that premium vibe that Rovio's game always seem to have. Now that a movie franchise is coming up, they’re putting on a new face for the future of their games.

Putting their foul-tempered fowls into a whole new format, we get a match-three puzzle that's more explosive than ever. In their many levels, you're tasked to collect certain bubble shapes and sizes in a limited number of moves to earn a ticket to the next round. It's not the most innovative mobile game, but it adds a ton of cute presentation flourishes that’s consistent with their new angry birds style.

One of our previous mobile favorites have staged their comeback and it's definitely just as good. It has a playscore of 8.32

9. FRAG Pro Shooter

It's been a while since the rise of the hero shooters but Oh Bibi's champion has come at just the right moment to steal a spot in the best of the best. Frag Pro Shooter distills the energy of the console shooters into something you can bring on the go.

It still follows the standard team shooter setup where you work together to rack up points with base attacks and kills. But, instead of just one hero per game, you get to shuffle around roles using the cards at your disposal. With more cards and upgrades, purchasable through their in-app store, the likelier you are to survive the game's drawn-out gunfights.

This combination of card game and shooting is one of the things that makes FRAG Pro Shooter stand out. Oozing with personality and esports potential, FRAG Pro Shooter gets a playscore of 8.37

8. Godzilla Defense Force

One of Japan's longest-running kaiju franchise has made its comeback in the new age. Along with the brand new monster movie franchise, NEXON jumps into the cash cow bandwagon with a first-hand experience at bringing down strange, colossal beasts. Based on TOHO's official IP, Godzilla Defense Force features the series' mightiest Kaiju, from Mothra to Rodan, to Godzilla himself.

Defeat them in battle and you'll get to keep them as Monster Cards to use their skills and buffs in your next fights. The waves are relentless and it does a great job of building up anticipation for the next big boss. It’s one way that Godzilla Defense Force keeps you coming back for more.

Make your way through their many awesome monsters, tap to defend your cities, and get some upgrades to fortify your defenses.

It has a playscore of 8.39

7. Langrisser

Released in January this year, Zlong Games breathed new life to the classic 90s tactical RPG with a release on the smartphones. Langrisser is a beloved gem of the past. And, clearly, it was in good hands with a smooth transition to the Android.

It returns with stunning new art and animations that make it feel at home alongside today's crop of games. Also making a return are their exhilarating turn-based battles, which was precisely what Langrisser such an icon for its time.

Unfortunately, with its modernized looks, comes modernized methods too, and that means an injection of some gacha mechanics. It’s gonna take a whole lot of grinding and upgrading if you want to fully experience its medieval world. But, if you're a big fan of their atmosphere and combat, there's still a lot of fun to be had in this revival of a beloved SRPG.

It has a playscore of 8.4

6. Call of Duty: Mobile

One of the most recent additions to the roster of great FREE Android games. Activision takes their popular multiplayer FPS to the mobile and it's working out great. While they had a rocky start, with lags and bugs all around, it has steadily become one of the premier FPS titles. Within the first week of its release, there have been more than 35 million downloads and 2 million microtransactions revenues.

With Call of Duty Mobile, you get heavy-duty shooting, especially with the trendy 100 player battle royale mode. Even so close to launch, and even as a free to play game, Call of Duty Mobile is one for the books and it's only about time before it enters the eSports scene.

It has a playscore of 8.47

5. Archero

Full-blown, console-like games are appreciated but it’s also nice when a game elevates the usual mobile genre’s into something bigger than itself. It’s a romantic way of putting things, but the shoe fits for Habby's Archero. It definitely has the makings of a mobile success as it brings roguelike action to the platform. And it does so, not with complicated control schemes, but using one-finger controls that’s common in most mobile games.

While it looks simple enough, Archero defies expectations with a varied bestiary that will continue to challenge you from one level to the next. Despite the complicated level to progression, you can still take the action offline and only connect to wifi to get those sweet upgrades.

As levels grow harder, its microtransaction scheme may come in handy for when you’re so close to the finish and you don’t wanna lose progress. As usual, you might hit a wall eventually, but it doesn’t make Archero less of a fun and addictive gaming experience.

It has a score of 8.54

4. ANOTHER EDEN

Perhaps this year's biggest crossovers, Another Eden will be familiar for any self-respecting fan of JRPGs. Veteran developers WFS have been making a move towards the mobile now, and with this game, artists from Chrono Trigger, Luminous Arc 2, BINCHOTAN, and so much more make their contribution to the new age.

While it's your typical JRPG fare--telling the story of a time-traveling hero saving the future from darkness--its individual features, like writing from Chrono Trigger's Masato Kato, and the music of Yasunori Mitsuda and Shunsuke Tsuchiya, all add up to create a next-level atmosphere.

Another Eden isn't a premium game so there will be some grinding involved if you wanna get their best characters. Fortunately, their best aspects exist separately from its grindy gacha gameplay.

A must-have for JRPG fans on a budget, it gets a playscore of 8.56

3. BTS WORLD

BTS is a global sensation now, and what more to prove it than with the success of it's latest official game. In Netmarble's BTS World, you get a chance to get up close and personal with your favorite Bangtan Boys.

Through visual novel-style narratives, short films, video calls, and texts, you'll get to see a glimpse of the kpop stars' lives off-camera. You can even dress them all up, from wardrobe to hairstyles, according to the dictates of your own BTS army heart.

But, impressing a BTS fan is one thing. BTS World's success also comes from the fact that's enjoyable for non-fans too. Anyone with a love for manager sim style gameplay will get a lot from BTS World's content.

Charming and well-written, it fits right into BTS’s brand and it has a score of 8.77

2. Oddmar

As far as mobile games go, Mobge’s action-adventure platformer is on a league of its own. With Oddmar, they captivate players with their creative use of Nordic mythology in crafting a diverse and fun platformer experience that fans of Rayman Origins would recognize.

Struggling to find a place in Valhalla, Oddmar proves his worth by solving a myriad of hand-crafted, physics-based puzzles. All of it seems to be gift-wrapped in mushroom popping animations and progressively more clever platform mechanics that will endear you further to their Norse-inspired narrative.

Here comes the bad news: it’s free, but you’ll only get to play the first part as a demo. To experience the full extent of its charm and ingenuity, you’ll have to pay for it. But, even as a demo, it’s already clear just how much passion and dedication were poured into this project. And, for that, it gets a deserving second-place finish with a score of 8.78

1. Grimvalor

Thanks to FromSoftware, there's now a strong market for dark games with punishing combat. Grimvalor delivers all that in the portable format. Direlight's hack and slash game takes you down through the dark halls of Vallaris, pitting you against towering bosses in your journey to discover a lost King's fate.

It's a story that's compellingly told through sinister dungeons and cool monsters. Even in its condensed format, Grimvalor manages to wow players with its visually stunning environments and satisfying combat.

While it’s free to download, Grimvalor on the Android is actually more of a demo. While that might be disappointing for some, the game does a good job of giving you a taste of what’s to come in the full game. With so much quality in such small package, Grimvalor more than often proves that it’s definitely worth the investment.

It has a playscore of 8.87

Top 10 Free-to-Play Android Games of 2019 | Games of the Year

The iOS is slowly evolving into a reliable platform for mobile gaming in each version update. Visit our list of the Top iOS Games for the year 2019 to view the full catalog.

10. Sky: Children Of The Light

Opening this list is a breathtaking title from the makers of the award-winning indie game, Journey. After making nameless companions out in the magical dunes, it’s time Thatgamecompany takes you to an even more magical place, just right above the clouds.

Children of the Light is absolutely beautiful. It contrasts Journey’s bleak and somber atmosphere with Sky’s vibrant colors of blue and white. Everything in this game is built for simplicity.

Like Journey, it features an online feature where you make friends along the way and soar together around its enchanting skies. Teamwork is a necessary aspect in this entry and each of its mastercrafted levels offers unique surprises and challenges for you to overcome.

It is the perfect game to de-stress yourself from the woes of mankind… maybe temporarily. It receives a playscore of 8.91

9. Chess Rush

The sudden appearance of Auto-Battler titles spawned numerous clones with the same concept, but different execution.

Tencent’s Chess Rush is just like that. It’s a turn-based strategy game where you control heroes in a massive chessboard and order them to dominate the battlefield. It’s just like chess, but instead of inanimate pieces, you get to see a flurry of magical attacks all around your screen.

What makes Chess Rush different, however, is its emphasis on co-op. Teaming up with friends online makes every encounter challenging yet rewarding in its 2v2 and 4v4 modes.

It fits perfectly as a mobile title and Tencent capitalizes on its portability with seamless quality of life features. It easily took over Valve’s Underlords with a playscore of 8.92

8. Dead Cells

What better way to keep that adrenaline pumping by playing Playdigious' and Motion Twin’s slick roguelike game? The rules are simple: Make your way through randomly generated dungeons and survive a horde of dangerous enemies. The catch? You never die, you simply respawn but you have to make your way again after every defeat.

Every resurrection offers a different set of challenges for your character, and it’s what made Dead Cells unique than most roguelikes. Motion Twin captures the genre’s relentless action while adding a hefty amount of replay value for the hardcore players.

Although a controller is recommended to boost your overall experience, you can still enjoy Dead Cells with your fingers… but it’s gonna take a while to get used to… and many retries.
It has a playscore of 8.93

7. GWENT: The Witcher Card Game

The Witcher III is one of the best games in the market and lying underneath its vast open-world is a side-activity where get to play cards. CD Projekt Red listened to the many cries of Gwent-enthusiasts and created a standalone card-game that’s 10 times better than Geralt’s adventure.

Outsmart your enemies by being one step ahead of them. GWENT is a different breed of Card Game where you pick a faction, build an army, and wage war against other players across multiple game modes. Each card and faction offer hundreds of possibilities, all depending on your skill and maybe a bit of luck.

The Witcher Card Game is slowly earning its place in the CG arena. Ever since the iOS’ release, it became one of the App Store’s most popular titles. Just recently, they released their latest expansion: Merchants of Ofir, which introduces new cards and mechanics to the board.

A playscore of 8.94

6. ANOTHER EDEN

Coming out of development hell was this passion project that resulted from a collective effort of renowned JRPG creators and artists from popular titles like Chrono Trigger, Luminous Arc 2, BINCHOTAN, and more. It kinda feels like mobile’s very own version an Avengers: Endgame, but for its JRPG market.

Despite its ensemble of talented people, the story is still your typical JRPG: you embark on a grand journey to save the lost future and stop the evil before anything bad happens. It's a captivating journey with a fascinating set of characters that glues you from start to finish.

ANOTHER EDEN excels in its combination of classic and modern JRPG-design. The creators made sure you get to enjoy its world full of monsters and magic. It receives a playscore of 8.94

5. Call Of Duty: Mobile

There’s not a lot of good first-person shooters on the iOS until Activision’s Mobile version of their famed Call of Duty franchise. Think of this game as a hodgepodge of all the shooter fads. Call of Duty: Mobile is not just one game. It feels like two games in one for its inclusion of a Battle Royale mode and a traditional 5 versus 5 combat.

It’s obvious that this game was made for its fans. Notable characters from the series including Captain Price and Ghost are playable characters, but only as avatars so if you’re terrible at shooting, there’s no hope for you.

It's the perfect mobile game to chill or scream around with friends on a Friday night. A playscore of 8.96

4. Star Traders: Frontiers

Go boldly where no man has gone before in this sci-fi RPG from Trese Brothers. Frontiers is the perfect space opera for you to enjoy. As captain of a powerful ship, explore a massive and procedurally generated universe with your ragtag crew of space pirates, bounty hunters and more.

As an RPG, every adventure feels new. Mold your own narrative and watch how the universe reacts to your choices. Its ever-changing scenarios give more room for replayability and some crazy experimentation if you’re up for it.

The game is well-received due to its insane amount of content for such a small studio. It rewards player choices and giving more freedom for various customizations and tactics. A playscore of 9.00

3. The Gardens Between

Time is constantly on the move and the things we take for granted might disappear eventually. As cheesy as it goes, The Voxel Agent's adventure puzzle explores all of that, letting you weave forwards and backward through time.

Traverse an array of beautiful and mysterious gardens along with two best friends, Arina and Frendt. Bask in its vibrant world, and create ripples along with your fate. It's ultimately an emotional tale of friendship and maturation.

With its charming visuals handcrafted to perfection, wrapped in Tim Shiel’s reflective soundtrack, it encourages you to think about your very own life. Will you keep holding on, or learn to let go? Either way, it’s the ideal mobile game for the iOS to give us the feels.

It’s receives a playscore of 9.01

2. Hyper Light Drifter

From the PC, consoles, then the iOS. Abylight's Hyper Light Drifter has come a long way. It only took them 3 years for a mobile release.

Set in a blaring nightmarish world of post-apocalyptic technology. This 2D adventure lets you take control of a silent Drifter as he travels between areas of unknown origins with interesting lore. Its neon-lit backdrop brings the right kind of atmosphere for its broken sci-fi civilization.

What shaped Hyper Light Drifter’s success comes from its energetic and fast-paced combat; your Drifter can do various abilities with his powerful energy sword. Encountering boss fights in each of its unique levels is similar to FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, although with a toned-down difficulty.

The iOS could use some good action-adventures, and Hyper Light Drifter is here to deliver. A playscore of 9.05

1. Ordia

Speaking of neon, Whatoplay’s top iOS game for the year 2019 is full of it.

Bringing back the joy of one-finger platformers, Loju's Ordia is easy to learn, but difficult to master. It’s set in a bizarre and hazardous world where you get to jump, bounce, stick, and slide your way through rich and vibrant environments. Your goal is to simply guide each creature to safety in an ecosystem determined to eat them alive.

Unlike the rest of the games on the list, this is no triple-A title with boss fights waiting for you in each level, it’s just a casual game with you and your finger trapped in colorful 30 or so levels. And the best thing is? No in-app purchases!

It receives a playscore of a 9.16

The future in gaming is the mobile and for this year, the Android takes us closer. Visit our list of the best Android Games of 2019 for the full catalog.

10. GRID Autosport

Despite the five year difference between this game's release on the PC and this Android port, Codemaster's 2014 racing game zoomed through the yearly platform rankings and into a very respectable 10th place. In its previous releases, GRID Autosport has been described as one of the generation's best racers. And, though there were criticisms, it's not as prevalent in the Android transition.

It's console-quality racing on the go, with smooth, customizable controls, and content spanning hundreds of cars and circuits, game modes, plus all of the game's DLCs in one convenient package. It might come at a heavy price of 4 gigabytes but that's crumbs compared to all the awesome Triple-A content that comes with it.

One of the gems of the TOCA series made available in a portable format, it gets a playscore of 8.6

9. Rush Rally 3

Yes, we have another racing game. The third installment to Brownmaster's racing series, Rush Rally 3 markets itself as one of the realistic rally simulations out there. It's not quite the console-quality game that GRID Autosport is, but what makes Rush Rally 3 a great addition to the Android roster is its perfectly balanced mechanics.

Rally racing is really one of the most demanding sports in the racing genre. With this installment of the Rush Rally series, they tinker with optimized controls to deliver an accurate encapsulation of that atmosphere. On top of the impressive speed and controls, Rush Rally 3 also has tons to offer in terms of content. For less than five bucks, it gives players 72 different stages, that same number in cars and a variety of game modes to try your hand on.

It's not the best in terms of graphics, but it more than makes up for it in style. It has a playscore of 8.64

8. Whispers of a Machine

Slowing us down from the breakneck speeds of racing is this point and click adventure from Raw Fury. After the rave reviews of their previous title, Kathy Rain, Whispers Of A Machine is a welcome treat as it explores a mystery in the realm of science fiction. It tells the story of the cybernetically augmented Vera who's tasked with investigating a series of murders but unfolds something a little more sinister.

Adventures are always helped by a foundation of a great narrative and Whispers of a Machine definitely has that. But to add to it is the layers of effective puzzles that are sprinkled in between the twists and turns of Vera's journey. Short as it is, Whispers of a Machine is an exquisite mystery that deserves all the praise it gets.

It has a playscore of 8.64

7. ANOTHER EDEN

Android gems are hard to keep up with, but if you're a fan of JRPGs, this is a title you can't miss. In name, it doesn't invoke the classic titles of Square Enix's golden era. And, in story, it's typical JRPG fare with a brave a hero journeying through time and space to save the future from darkness.

As simple as everything else is, what sets Another Eden apart from the rest is how it brought together some of the genre's best minds. From Chrono Trigger's writer, Masato Kato, to the musical talents of Yasunori Mitsuda and Shunsuke Tsuchiya. All of them coming together to take a simple JRPG to the next level.

Unfortunately, it isn't a premium game. But, this fact never gets in the way of the enjoyment, letting you enjoy the experience with or without the epic characters.

It has a playscore of 8.66

6. Star Traders: Frontiers

Take control of a starship and venture into a massive open universe in this turn-based strategy RPG from Trese Brothers. It's the story of a galaxy-wide takeover and you get to sit in place of captain, commandeering your crew against alien threats, political intrigue, and internal strife.

As an RPG, Star Traders offers plenty of paths to take, whether its spy, merchant, pirate or any of its 26 different jobs. Not to mention its wide array of ship customizations and loyal recruits that will help you forge your own path through a narrative of your own creation.

Star Traders: Frontiers is only one among many of Trese Brother's beloved RPG creations and with this 2019 title, it looks like they're only getting better.

It has a playscore of 8.69

5. BTS WORLD

Following their World Tours and collaboration with international artist, Halsey, the Korean pop group, BTS has solidified itself as a global sensation. Which is why it makes sense that this latest official game is making rounds on the mobile.

With Netmarble's BTS World, not only do you get to know each of the talented boys, you also get a few glimpses of their life outside the cameras. All of it through visual novel narratives, short films, video calls, and even texts. For ultra fans, you can even dress up each member as you please, from their wardrobe to their hairstyles. But, even for non-fans, BTS World holds its own thanks to its manager sim style gameplay.

Addictive, charming, and well-written. Just like the boys themselves, BTS World casts a wide net for audiences and it gets a playscore of 8.77

4. Oddmar

This adventure game from Mobge Games already made waves on the iOS, earning its top spot in the rankings last year. But, in 2019, it carves its name on the top ranks of the Android too. First released in January, Oddmar has consistently been the game to beat, offering players a unique Nordic paradise as a Viking fighting to redeem his place in Valhalla.

It's a mobile platformer that has quality in every aspect. Its mushroomy jumping animation is quirky but it works, and its level designs--ribbon-wrapped with a pleasant, magical atmosphere--is satisfying, to say the least.

Oddmar seems to be a balancing act of sophisticated gameplay and cartoony, childlike wonder. Through its move to the Android, it still continues to work like a charm, remaining a top-notch title with a score of 8.78

3. Stardew Valley

Speaking of smooth transitions from one platform to the next, developer ConcernedApe's take on the classic Harvest Moon formula was undoubtedly one of the most celebrated mobile releases this year. Already garnering a massive success on its indie PC debut, Stardew Valley has made itself THE name in modern farm life RPGs. It's a fusion of old and new.

While it invites nostalgia with its retro pixel aesthetics and chiptune soundtracks, Stardew Valley is also loaded with activities. It expands the country sim from its simple farming roots, letting you branch out into other branches of agriculture too. Bringing the quiet and quaint experience into the portable format, Stardew Valley on the Android is yet another feather in their cap.

It has a playscore of 8.83

2. Grimvalor

Peace and quiet is one thing, but some of us want a degree of punishment in their games and this game is for them. Considered the Dark Souls equivalent on the mobile, Direlight's Grim Valor excelled at delivering brutal combat and dark settings.

Unlike its iOS release, it arrived on the Android as a free to play demo, giving you a taste of the action before you bring out the cash. It's a definitely an advantage for the budget gamer, but ultimately, with its top-to-bottom slickness GrimValor proves itself worthy of the investment.

Within its limited, mobile format, it offers visually stunning environments and a bestiary of cool monsters to take down with its exhilarating combat.

Today's gold standard in portable hack and slash, it gets a playscore of 8.87

1. Raiders of the North Sea

Even before its translation into digital, Raiders of the North Sea is already a renowned name in the board game sphere. It's a worker-placement board game that challenges you to conquer the lands of the ice and snow all for gold and fame. With that strong Viking premise, it's already a winner. But, with the talents of Dire Wolf, Raiders of the North Sea continues to shine as a digital game too.

It translates the quiet and contemplative into a full-blown experience packed with beautiful backdrops and glorious soundtracks that fully immerses you in your plundering. In a genre ruled by competition, Raiders of the North Sea has plenty, not just in their active online community but also against their decently challenging AI too.

Digital adaptations can be tough, but Dire Wolf Digital did an excellent job at creating an experience we can enjoy for many years to come.

That's why it's our Android Game of the Year with a playscore of 9.1

Presenting the top Android Games of 2019. These are the highest-rated Android games currently available on the Google PlayStore.

Top 10 Android Games of 2019 | Games of the Year

One of the centers of indie game development, the PC is an interesting place for videogame competition. Visit our list of the Best PC Games of 2019 for the full catalog.

10. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

With the Metroidvania love at an all-time high, Koji Igarashi chose one of the best moments to return to the iconic world of gothic action. With his iron grit and a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign, the ritual was completed and we get perhaps one of the most faithful additions to the Castlevania lore we’ll ever get.

Igarashi was one of the main people responsible for the success of the cult classic Symphony of the Night and the Castlevania titles that followed. In this spiritual successor, he brings all that energy back, and more.

With its story of an orphan making her way through the floors of a castle to lift an alchemist’s curse, Bloodstained boasts fantastic level designs, tactile controls, and even the silliness that we all associate with the Castlevania series.

While its greatest strength has always been its similarity to its predecessor, this could also be its weakness. It’s a recreation, but like PC Gamer says, it might be a bit too old fashioned.

With its high scores from gamers though, maybe it’s exactly what it needs to be. It has a playscore of 8.84

9. A Short Hike

In a world obsessed with fast-paced action and punishing difficulty, A Short Hike is the videogame equivalent of a breath of fresh air. It’s a singleplayer indie adventure that puts you in the shoes of bird person, Claire, who ventures to Hawk Peak in search of a cellphone signal.

Aside from its incredibly relatable plot, A Short Hike’s journey to the top is also sprinkled with all things bright and beautiful. It’s literally just a walk in the park. Sometimes you meet new characters and have natural yet dorky conversations, Or you can glide around and go on collection sidequests around its lush pixel environments. It's this combination of relaxing atmosphere and genuine interactions that make up the bulk of what makes A Short Hike awesome.

The game does struggle a bit with endings. Destructoid gave it a 7.5, saying that while its two-hour storyline doesn’t give it a chance to grow stale, “the final moments suffer from a lack of setup and character development.”

But, if it’s a bite-sized vacation you want, A Short Hike is more than willing to serve. Created by a developer burned out from another project, Thumbsticks has this to say: “It’s fitting, then, that what began as an act of self-care...has blossomed into a welcome respite from the modern world.”

It has a playscore of 8.85

8. AMID EVIL

Everybody knows nostalgia is one of the easiest ways to make a videogame hit. But, if you pair that with fresh and original ideas, that's when you've hit the jackpot. For our 8th spot, we get a game that might be awfully familiar to long-time fans of the Doom series. However, it's most similar to the classic fantasy FPS titles like Heretic and Hexen.

Indefatigable's Amid Evil offers frenetic FPS action in the style of the old MSDOS days. Except, with a much bigger scale than the games of old. The game spreads across 7 distinct worlds, all jampacked with monsters and mystical weapons.

On the other hand, it's definitely not the first to explore the retro shooter formula. Dusk, a retro-style shooter from the same publisher, earned high praise just the year before. Thankfully, for AMID EVIL, it makes itself worthy of the same acclaim. This is exactly Destructoid's view.

"I'm not as over the moon as I was with DUSK, but that's like saying you didn't enjoy driving the Camaro as much as the Corvette." they said.

Game Revolution expounds on the point in their review, saying "Even if you’ve already tired yourself out on retro shooters, Amid Evil deserves your attention as a well-crafted and unique entry in the genre."

The verdict is out. Despite the many competitors in the market, AMID EVIL is just as deserving of its spot on the list, with a total playscore of 8.93

7. Devil May Cry 5

It took 11 years of waiting but it looks like CAPCOM finally figured what to do with their iconic hack and slash series. After the slightly polarizing results of Ninja Theory's DmC reboot, which changed too many things for comfort, this fifth main installment seems to have nailed the balance.

It brings back the two favorite demon slayers, Nero--with his new robot appendage--and Dante, with his grey hair. But, DMC5 also brought a new character in V, whose demon companions give an added edge to the entry. As a series built on making demon-slaying as stylish as ever, Devil May Cry 5 is definitely equipped with next-level visuals.

However, for most reviewers, what really sets it apart is its combat. IGN SEA gave it a score of 9.5, praising the depth, variety, and freedom that the three main characters provide. PC Gamer similarly praised the game for its "greater variety of combat styles and a higher degree of challenge."

Aside from combat, its renewed focus on story and characters also makes it a standout in a series that's mostly been praised for its straightforward action.

All in all, Devil May Cry 5 is a return to everything we loved about the series and more, and it has a playscore of 8.98

6. SEKIRO: Shadows Die Twice

FromSoftware has built a reputation for punishing, genre-defining action RPGs. But, in their latest IP, they switch things up just a little to create something that's hauntingly familiar yet beautifully fresh in its own way.

Putting you in the shoes of a samurai with the useful ability to come back from the dead, SEKIRO is more of a focused action-adventure compared to FromSoftware's traditional RPGs. Without builds and multiplayer distractions, Cheatcc calls it "a game that asks you to succeed on your own and creates an intimate, engaging experience as a result."

But, while its story, settings, and characters were welcome additions to the formula, SEKIRO’s greatest strength is ultimately its enhancements on the studio's signature punishing combat. It adds stealth, verticality, and open level designs into the mix. This means that fights are as complex and grueling as ever but there's a lot more to play within how to approach them.

As heavy.com notes in their review: "The greater focus on dynamic, nuanced fights greatly improves over Dark Souls’ hack and slash methodology."

While there may have had some hiccups at launch, SEKIRO's recent reviews, especially on Steam, have been overwhelmingly positive since.

It has a playscore of 8.98

5. Katana ZERO

Speaking of Japanese combat settings, Askiisoft brings Devolver Digital another impressive win with their flashy take on cyberpunk action platforming. At first blush, it has all the markings of a Devolver title. Just like Hotline Miami, it's got that lush retro aesthetic, colorful visuals, and fast-paced difficulty.

When every hit results in instant death though, the premise anchors on perfection. That's when the rewind button comes in handy, letting you plan out your movements for each interaction and culminating into a surgical but satisfyingly smooth combat experience.

But, Katana ZERO didn't earn its spot for action alone. There's a complicated narrative underpinning it, too. It tells the tale of a sword for hire and it does so with a timed dialog that lets players project their personalities into the story.

As Shacknews puts it: "Katana Zero dares to go bolder, with a story that takes more than one left turn, and an innovative dialogue system that can paint both the story and the main character in a different light."

And, if like most critics, you’re worried about its short run time and lack of replayability, Game Reactor offers some reassurance: "Katana Zero is a short experience with very little replay value...but it's also, without a doubt, one of the best low-profile games we've played."

It receives a playscore of 9.01

4. Baba Is You

Indie games might mean low-budget but what they lack in production value, they make up for with boundless creativity. And that’s kind of what Hempuli Oy offers in their endlessly charming puzzle game.

In their world, the only rule is that there aren’t any rules at all. As you push letters and blocks around their pixel-based environment, you get to be the sole decider of how the world around you works. For Game Reactor: “It's not about shifting the pieces in the game but changing how the game itself operates.”

When there’s so much freedom involved, it widens your scope of imagination and forces you to think outside the box. It only gets harder, as words and conditions continue to pile on. It’s challenging, but it’s the kind of challenge that puzzle fans will love--the kind that leaves you thinking even long after you’ve put it down.

Baba Is You doesn’t just continually redefine itself, it’s irreverence to rules manages to redefine the genre too. MeriStation describes it beautifully, calling it an “orderly anarchy” that “demonstrates the magic of words.”

A puzzle that will leave you suitably baffled, it has a playscore of 9.02

3. Slay the Spire

Released early in January of this year, Mega Crit's debut title has continued to slay the charts throughout the rest of 2019. Now, it finds itself at home among the top ranks as one of the most innovative card games of the year.

Slay the Spire offers turn-based strategy, cardgame mechanics, and roguelike gameplay all rolled into one. It's not just the unlikely mixture that gives the game its flair, it's how well the three combine into an exhilarating cardgame that's relatively low-cost. Unlike other deck-building titles, it's a level playing field where you choose from three characters, each with unique basic decks which you build up along your journey.

For IGN, its formula "encourages experimentation, gives you time to make mistakes, and will challenge you immensely."

As a roguelike game, death is an integral factor but it also means it has replayability in droves. Slaying the titular spire only takes about an hour, but its balance of chance encounters and tactical depth will keep you coming back for more.

At its earliest stage, it’s been called “the first great surprise of 2019. ” But with a new playable character in the works, it shows that the game will only get better with time.

It has a playscore of 9.13

2. Resident Evil 2

Though Bloodstained may have been the picture of an all too faithful spiritual successor, CAPCOM shows them off in their biggest hit this year, creating 2019’s poster boy for a remake done right.

In their effort to bring 1998’s Resident Evil 2 to the modern generation, CAPCOM didn’t just build it from the ground up--with new textures for Claire and Leon, and a more immersive over the shoulder perspective--they turned it into a modern horror game in its own right.

In line with the challenges presented by the big visual changes, CAPCOM had to explore other ways to deliver the series’ signature scares. But, in doing so, they created a whole new experience that’s packed with content and provided new insight to Claire and Leon’s adventures in Raccoon City.

As IGN puts it: “Capcom did a fantastic job of resurrecting all the best parts of the classic Resident Evil 2 and making them look, sound, and play like a 2019 game.”

Released in January, Resident Evil 2 bookends the year with a chart-topping finish and it rightly deserves its spot--here and in the halls of modern horror fame.

It has a playscore of 9.15

1. Disco Elysium

For a game that's only been out for two months, ZA/UM's Disco Elysium snuck its way to the top being called one of the most groundbreaking RPGs yet. RPGs are known for their emergent quality, customizations, and unique interactions with an unfamiliar environment. And, that's exactly what Disco Elysium brings to the table.

It follows the footsteps of Larian Studios' Divinity series with its intricate role-playing mechanics. Instead of sprawling fantasy settings, we get a political tale of a detective fighting to solve a murder mystery and to survive the voices in his head.

Ultimately, though, you, the player, will get to tell the story yourself through the many choices on offer, making each lengthy run-through a different experience. As PC Gamer notes: "...my experience of it is completely unique to me, such is the dizzying variety of skills, stats, thoughts, and conversation options on offer."

Freedom of choice aside, its Disco Elysium's story that stands out the most. Only Single Player notes that its characters "explore highbrow themes such as existentialism, political theory, and psychology, all wrapped around a twin mystery of murder and identity."

If you want to be engrossed, intrigued, and awed by a gorgeous, painterly world that's not your own, Disco Elysium is the place to be. That's why it's our best PC title of 2019, with a playscore of 9.29

Next up, we're ranking the best games to come out this year where indie games and triple A's have a level playing field, the PC. These are the highest-rated PC games in 2019.

Top 10 PC Games of 2019 Games of the Year

Sony’s PlayStation 4 is on fire this year. Experience greatness with our full and up-to-date list of the Best PlayStation 4 Games of 2019.

10. Slay The Spire

We start off the list with an unconventional combination between two genres: Deckbuilding and Rogue-like.

CGs come and go, but Mega Crit Games’ Slay the Spire is among the many CGs that survived the trend. Mixing turn-based strategy, cards and rogue-like into one title, this ever-changing gauntlet tests your luck, deck-building skills and a bit of your 200IQ plays. With each level randomly generated, make do with the limited cards you have at your disposal and fend off a horde of ghastly enemies with their own set of challenges.

It’s worth the asking price. Most of Slay The Spire’s praise comes from its amalgam of gameplay design. One of the critics, TheSixthAxis, gave it a 9 out of 10. They were impressed by the game's balance of multiple genres. Saying that, “... it takes the best parts of roguelites, dungeon crawlers, and card games, and mixes them together into an unholy, but absurdly enjoyable game.”

But like many games, it isn’t perfect. Most of its concern comes from its heavy reliance on RNG mechanics. But hey, it’s a card game and RNJesus isn’t always on your side. It receives a playscore of 8.84.

9. Kingdom Hearts III

Others still couldn’t believe Kingdom Hearts III finally came out this year. After a series of major delays and technical challenges, Kingdom Hearts III is finally out… and it ONLY took Square Enix a decade. This third installment isn’t just any other sequel, it serves as the series’ climactic point after years and years of build-up.

Sora and his band of Disney friends return to save the world from the faces of Darkness using the power of friendship. Travel to iconic Disney and Pixar worlds while fending off enemies using your magical Keyblade in its refined hack and slash combat.

There’s no denying the series suffers from a very convoluted story. What makes this game truly special though is its cast of characters. Fans of the series will finally get the emotional pay-off they’ve been waiting for.

Push Square is clearly aware of its flaws but was completely overwhelmed by its magic, saying “As an unforgettable experience, Kingdom Hearts III is exceptional, essential, and most of all, undeniably special.”

Despite everything, Kingdom Hearts III still has the heart and the charm that makes it a great follow-up to the magical franchise... and it’s only just begun with a major DLC coming soon. A playscore of 8.84

8. SEKIRO: Shadows Die Twice

It’s difficult not to love FromSoftware’s brutally punishing titles. Just when you thought you knew everything about Dark Souls’ combat, SEKIRO denies all of it. It twists the way these games were played. Instead of rolling out then attack, you are encouraged to PARRY swift sword strikes THEN attack. If you can’t master this, you’re most likely seeing this ANIMATION SCREEN every 3 minutes.

In this game, you are no longer wandering around Gothic landscapes and facing off against Eldritch horrors, you are a Shinobi in Sengoku Era Japan and your Sword is as important as your dodging skills. It will try your patience, yes. But once you get that satisfying coup de grace from that ONE boss that killed you a hundred times never gets old.

It was universally acclaimed. Critics lauded the game’s challenge and emotional story. One reviewer, IGN’s Brandin Tyrrel, stated that “Sekiro evolves From Software’s formula into a stylish stealth-action adventure that, naturally, emphasizes precision and skill in its combat.”

Git gud. It receives a playscore of 8.85

7. The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel III

The Trails of Cold Steel series is a testament to the undying JRPG genre. It’s one of Falcom’s longest-running titles and it continues to bring more surprises in The Legend of Heroes’ vast and complicated universe.

This is the first entry made solely for the PlayStation 4. It’s set years after the previous installment and it takes you once again to its war-torn world. Like Persona, it’s not just all about taking out enemies in turn-based battles. Most of your 7 are spent exploring its Military version of Hogwarts and engaging in memorable social activities.

The game received generally favorable reviews. Most of its praise comes from its intriguing story arc and memorable cast of characters. ZTGD’s Jae Lee gave Cold Steel III a 9 out of 10. Stating that the game “... delivers on all fronts with improved visual fidelity, performance and a slew of meaningful new mechanics.”

Like most JRPGs, it’s a long journey that requires time and effort to fully realize the gist of it all, which is why other critics aren’t happy with it. And oh, there’s also a problem with its odd localization, which raises a few eyebrows from its Western players.

It’s a game built for its fans and it remains consistent with its overarching themes, gameplay, and world-building. You can’t fix something that’s not broken, and this is why Cold Steel III receives a playscore of 8.85

6. The Outer Worlds

Capitalism… in SPACE. Three words that sums up everything about Obsidian's brand new IP. The Outer Worlds is a breath of fresh air after a series of disappointing First Person Shooter RPGs.

Explore the Halcyon Systems where everything costs money from important life-saving medicines to downright fake windows. Anyone familiar with Fallout’s style can easily manage to make sense of what this game is all about. There are multiple ways to handle every situation, whether you want to go guns blazing or use your silver tongue to make things easier without the bloodbath. There’s a lot to do in the system. As Captain of a massive ship aptly named The Unreliable, form your ragtag crew of unique personalities and travel between its multiple planets.

GameSpot’s 9 out of 10 is proof that this game fills the void of good RPG shooters. They said that “The Outer Worlds is consistently compelling throughout, and it's a superb example of how to promote traditional RPG sensibilities in a sharp, modern experience.”

Overall, it isn’t really revolutionary. The story isn’t as memorable compared to New Vegas and Fallout similarities are still there, but if you love a good adventure with impactful choices, the Halcyon Systems await you. A playscore of 8.85

5. Death Stranding

Walking simulator, throwing poop grenades, Norman Reedus and his Funky Fetus. These are just a few of the words that you will hear when discussing about Hideo Kojima’s latest IP. A title three years in the making after his unfortunate departure from Konami. Reconnect a fractured post-apocalyptic America as a futuristic Delivery Man running away from ghosts with a baby strapped on your body.

Many critics adored its slow burn moments while others were completely annoyed by its wonky movement and sluggish gameplay loop. Amidst a barrage of unfavorable reviews, mainly due to its ‘gameplay’, it mostly received perfect scores from various media outlets because of the auteurs' fully-realized vision. It was heavily praised for its story, characters, themes, and even its multiplayer feature where you can help other players in its ‘social strand system'

There’s no doubt that this is perhaps the most divisive game of this year, but it sure doesn’t mean that it’s terrible. If you can get past the cracks and a few bumpy slopes, it’s one hell of an experience. A playscore of 8.99

4. Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night

The Metroidvania genre is just getting better and better each year. Castlevania veteran Koji Igarashi returns and breathes new life into the Bloodstained universe. Complete with new lore and characters, follow the cursed life of Miriam as she makes her way into an evil castle filled with paranormal entities.

Just like Symphony of the Night, your abilities prove useful with the game’s Metroidvania elements. With your demon powers, unleash a hellish blaze of power at your enemies. Even newfound abilities can be used as traversal elements to unlock new paths or find secrets, which gives exploration a deeper focus.

It was praised for its fine blend of old school platforming mechanics and stylish action. However, it somehow suffers from its lack of polish and other unwelcome bugs. Nonetheless, the critics, namely IGN, adored how “Bloodstained does show that Koji Igarashi’s particular brand of “Igavania” still has teeth.”

It has a playscore of 8.90

3. Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch Remastered

One of PlayStation 3’s colorful titles is finally making its grand revival to Sony’s latest console.

The first Ni No Kuni game signalled the return of good-looking RPGs. Now coming as a Remastered version of its 2013 original, the Wrath of the White Witch feels new, yet familiar. It’s living up to the standards of Level-5’s talent and with the help of Studio Ghibli’s animators, it’s a video game that feels like a painting that’s come to life.

Considering it’s just a Remaster, the story remains unchanged, but its graphical and performance upgrades now let you run it at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second, the quality of the game is now on par with its sequel, Revenant Kingdom.

However, most of the game’s ‘remasterization’ doesn’t strike too well with players who are now accustomed to the visually great modern RPG titles. It receives the same praise from its original version, but it falls short with its unnecessary rework. A playscore of 8.92

2. Devil May Cry 5

It’s been 10 years since the last Devil May Cry game came out of existence. This fifth major entry to Dante and Nero’s demon-slaying quest was a long time coming and yes, DMC is back. Fans of the series know that the game’s main objective isn’t just about killing your enemies, it’s about how stylishly you can them down.

Return to the demon-whooping adventures of Dante and Nero alongside a mysterious new character named V. Each hero has its own unique abilities with varied skill ceilings. Flex those smokin’ sexy style combos in the most badass way possible with its new and improved combat system.

In this latest title, CAPCOM retains its signature ‘edgy’, ‘slick’, and ‘ridiculous’ motif that the series was known for. And these elements resulted in the entry’s universal praise. We Got This Covered’s David Morgan rated it with a 9 out of 10. Concluding with the statement that, “Devil May Cry 5 is more than a worthy sequel – it’s one of the best action games I’ve ever played.”

It’s good to see Dante and Nero again. It receives a jackpot playscore of 9.05

1. Resident Evil 2 Remake

CAPCOM is on a roll this year and this latest reiteration from the granddaddy of all survival-horror games is a step in the right direction. Return to the shoes of Claire and Leon as they go on a terrible first-day adventure in the mysterious town of Raccoon City.

Rebuilt from the ground up using CAPCOM’s powerful RE Engine, explore the god-forsaken town with painstaking detail. Its shift from a third-person perspective gives its terrifying atmosphere a more upfront tension. Nothing is more terrifying than being chased by a walking titan with a trench coat and a fedora.

Due to its mastercrafted rework, it received universal acclaim. Critics, including Game Informer, said: “Resident Evil 2 not only looks great, it plays well, and it forces you into a series of dark encounters that are a total rush.”

With RE3 rumored to be in development and more RE projects in the works, it looks like the franchise is far from ‘dead’ yet. It receives a playscore of 9.29
