1. Cuphead

PC — PS4 — Switch — XB1

Don’t let Cuphead’s cartoon art-style fool you. That’s the only thing keeping you from throwing the controller to your screen. As the appreciation for the art style fades, you’ll come to realize that Cuphead is a game made by insane people. Even the bosses laugh at you when you fumble that hit. Even with all those flashy moves, you’re still three or four hits away from being broken apart. Hell, even if you’ve got a friend with you playing as Mugman, it barely helps. It does guarantee that you two are gonna suffer together though.

2. Valorant

Playing Valorant is the last thing you should be doing in your life. This competitive first-person shooter will bring out the worst in you. It’s either: 1. You realize that you’re a lousy shot and accept the trashtalking. Or 2, you find out you’re good and you’ll be shouting at incompetent teammates for the rest of your matches. On the bright side, you’ll be discovering new swear words every day. The matches might be fast. But when things get really bad, the defeats are just humiliating.

3. Dark Souls: Remastered

PC — PS4 — Switch — XB1

Or basically all of FromSoftware’s games, but let’s give Dark Souls: Remastered the ‘most frustrating Dark Souls game to ever exist” award. Even when you’ve conquered General Radahn or Malenia in Elden Ring, you still won't stand a chance against these bosses. From the Capra Demon’s tiny boss room, to Artorias’ non-stop flurry of attacks, Remastered is just relentless. You'll come in with stars in your eyes, and next thing you know, you’re up against your first boss with crap weapons and armor. Like a lamb to slaughter.

4. Celeste

PC — PS4 — Switch — XB1

Celeste’s pixel charm….is the complete opposite of its challenging gameplay. The climb up this mountain will make you a nervous wreck. You only have to dash and jump. But as the first steps of your ascent will show you, the game will push these buttons and your reflexes to the limit. It’ll put strawberries in unreachable corners and, just to mock you even more, track your deaths every level.

5. The Mortuary Assistant

PC — Switch

Horror titles have never been cozy but The Mortuary Assistant is just EVIL. The jumpscares are randomly generated. And it will scare the shit out of you at every conceivable moment, that you’ll be holding your breath the entire time. It doesn’t matter that you’re just reading your task list, or fiddling with your game settings. It’s going to find a way to terrorize you. Things might eventually get predictable, but that lingering dread of being watched by… something…is never going away.

6. Super Mario Maker 2

I know what you’re thinking “This is a Mario game. It can’t be that bad, right?” Yeah… sorry bud. Once you enter the community-made levels, you’ll realize the horrors that this game offers. Whether in 2D or 3D, their insane platforming sections will break you. They’re like little torture chambers. If you really want to take that crown, just know you’ll be risking your Joy-Con in the process.

7. Overcooked! 2

PC — PS4 — Switch — XB1

Overcooked is not a game to play alone. The constant pressure of making that perfect dish before the timer runs out feels like Gordon Ramsay is out to give you a knuckle sandwich. It’s a recipe for disaster, especially on drunken nights with friends or when playing with family members. The competition is fierce, which is ironically what the game isn’t about. From moving platforms, magical portals, and rising waters, Overcooked 2 is a big bowl of chaos that’s not recommended to play comfortably.

8. Dota 2

Let’s face it: when you’re playing with people, you’re bound to have a hard time. Put 5 people with varying degrees of competence in one team and you get pure chaos. That’s especially the case in a game like Dota 2, where the learning curve is practically Mount Everest. The game has over a hundred heroes. 150 items. And game mechanics you probably won’t know a thousand hours in. When things are this complicated? It’s a miracle anyone gets along.

9. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

PC — PS4 — XB1

The second FromSoftware game on this list and it’s the most ‘unFromSoftware’ game of them all. By that, I don’t mean “Not Hard”. It’s just that Sekiro isn’t about dodging or running away from bosses and hoping they miss. It’s about embracing the parrying button. If you’re any good, you’ll be hearing the clink and clang of swords in rhythmic precision. If you’re not, you’ll be rinsing and repeating with no end in sight. Your precious game time is spent basking in frustration. Even if you are into Soulslike games, you might want to hold off on this one. Or try if you dare.

10. Spelunky 2

PC — PS4 — Series X — Switch — XB1

We end this list with the most vile game of them all. Forget Soulslike games, forget competitive shooters and MOBAS. Spelunky 2 is a game that breaks the soul. This is a sequel that goes beyond the challenge of the original, adding twists and turns to its treacherous underground world. In this game, everything is out to kill you. From falling rocks, falling spikes, falling monsters, The only reprieve you have is after you die and then you get to learn from your mistakes. Like Super Meat Boy and Hollow Knight, these games are unforgiving and will not go slow on you.

Iceberg Interactive and Muro Studios confirmed that the game would launch this month on Steam and other digital platforms
.

Muro Studios, a two-person team based in Helsinki, Finland, has created the critically acclaimed mobile game Shadow Bug. DOOMBLADE is their second major game.

Its main story arc involves the protagonist, Gloom Girl, the lone survivor of the Gloomfolk race, teaming up with the titular DOOMBLADE, a sentient weapon. As Gloom Girl, players will join forces with DOOMBLADE in a quest to explore the fantasy worlds of the Lowlands. The game also tasks players with getting back the weapon's powers and exacting vengeance on its captors, the Dread Lords.

According to Muro Studios, it took them five years to develop DOOMBLADE. They also released several demo versions, the latest of which went live in March.

Furthermore, they described DOOMBLADE as their "biggest and most ambitious project."

In our earlier games, we had started experimenting with new mechanics of combat and movement in platformer games. DOOMBLADE is where all that experimentation culminates, Valori wrote.

Muro Studios envisioned the upcoming game as a refreshing take on the Metroidvania theme. DOOMBLADE will be priced at US$17.99.

After multiple delays, the anticipated System Shock Remake finally gets a release date. Prime Matter and Nightdive Studios announced that the System Shock Remake had gone gold. In turn, they will be launching the action-adventure game on May 30.

(This May 30), players will be treated to developer Nightdive Studio's stunningly-faithful recreation of the classic shooter/immersive sim, the two gaming companies said in a joint press release.

System Shock Remake will be released digitally for PC on Steam, GOG, and Epic Games. Prime Matter has started accepting preorders for the game for PC devices. System Shock Remake is also expected to be ported to next-gen consoles and MacOS devices. However, the publisher and developer have yet to reveal more details.

Console editions of System Shock will release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Series X|S in due course. More details will be shared in the future, they said.

The developers stressed that System Shock Remake was a reboot, not a remastered version of the original 1994 game. The upcoming game will feature high-definition (HD) visuals and an overhaul of its user interface and controls. It will also come with new sound and music, gameplay, enemies, and combat options, Nightdive Studios added.

News of a remake of System Shock first surfaced in 2015. The producers even launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund its development. They surpassed their goal of securing US$900,000 in July 2016, when over 21,600 backers contributed US$1.35 million. However, the full launch of System Shock Remake has been postponed multiple times for various reasons. These included developers' decision to switch from Unity to Unreal Engine 4. The team behind System Shock Remake also took a hiatus in 2018.

The creators initially teased players with a demo version in 2020 and announced plans to release it that same year. However, the release date was later pushed back to 2021 and 2022, citing the need for further development to meet the creators' standards.

The indie game developer announced it would roll out new content for both Mini Metro and Mini Motorways on July 24. Titled "Miniversary," it will be the biggest update for both simulation games.

The upcoming Miniversary DLC will offer more than just new maps and items. Players can also anticipate a unique crossover of maps between Mini Metro and Mini Motorways. This will allow players to enjoy maps from both games.

Here's to another 10 years of Mini, said Ben Emerson, Marketing Coordinator at Dinosaur Polo Club.

The "Miniversary" celebration contains six "crossover locations." Mini Metro and Mini Motorways will each receive three maps. For Mini Motorways, it will be New York City, London, and Mumbai. Meanwhile, Tokyo, Warsaw, and Lisbon are making their way to Mini Metro.

The Big Apple emerged as the winner in a community-based voting event held in 2022. It asked players which locations from Mini Metro they would like to play for Mini Motorways.

Following its triumph, its successor, Mini Motorways, was introduced to the gaming world in 2019. In Mini Motorways, players take on the role of managing road traffic and networks.

According to Dinosaur Polo Club, the two games already have a combined player base of around 12 million.

Independent gaming studio Fiveamp has lifted the veil on their latest project, NIMRODS, a new roguelite game that promises to transport players to an intergalactic adventure.

NIMRODS combine elements of gun-crafting, survival action, and reverse bullet hell. The highly anticipated game immerses players in a chaotic universe filled with interstellar conflict. Gamers will become members of the elite space hunters group, NIMRODS, and fight for survival in a 2D pixel-art style world.

NIMRODS [is] an elite guild of space hunters who traverse the cosmos, hunting dangerous aliens for bounty and glory, the developers said. The upcoming game will release via Early Access within the second half of 2023, Fiveamp said. It will be available on PC and Mac devices, the developers added.

NIMRODs' diverse cast of heroes offers players eight distinct playable characters, each with unique abilities and load-outs. The game also contains at least 16 gun types, 354 attachments, and "157 trillion gun builds," Fiveamp said. Gamers can unlock new characters and weapon upgrades as they progress through every level.

At the end of each mission, your hard-earned weapon will be extracted and returned to base, developers said. Once their weapons reach their base, players can "study and research" them to "uncover new ones, attachments, armor, and more.

In NIMRODS, players will need to explore five alien planets. On each planet, different challenges and secrets await them. While Fiveamp has yet to disclose more details about NIMRODS, the Austin-based studio has shared some stills and gameplay previews.

Developers have given members of the press and content creators a sneak peek into the game's progress through gameplay previews. The videos, in total, showed around 10 minutes of separate gameplay. It also included moments where players could build their weapons./ ###

A demo version is now online on Steam for the reboot of the 2014 arcade game Don't Die, Mr. Robot!

Infinite State Games announced that they launched a demo for the 3D remake of Don't Die, Mr. Robot! The developers said the game's demo would contain a self-contained version of its arcade mode. It will also include an online leaderboard, the UK-based studio added.

[The demo] will be a timed score attack battle to score as many points before the fruit-trance meter gets to 100%, Infinite State Games explained. In it, players start the game with the fruit-trance meter at 0%.
Publisher THQ Nordic just released a countdown for the Nintendo Switch launch of its action RPG Biomutant.

The Vienna-based video game publisher announced it would port Biomutant to Switch consoles this year. They have also set a release date for November 30. In turn, they set up a webpage counting the days before Switch's launch.

In Biomutant, players become anthropomorphic characters in a Wung Fu-fable world. Combat mechanics in the game do not only feature melee and shooting. The developers have incorporated martial arts elements into it.

The game's primary campaign takes players into a post-apocalyptic world. The story arc revolved around the 'Tree of Life' and six conflicting factions called 'Tribes'. Players can choose whether to fight or forge alliances with the tribes. It is also up to them to decide the fate of the "Tree of Life."

Biomutant came out in 2021. The open-world RPG first landed on PC, PS5, Series X|S, PS4, and Xbox One. Developers from Sweden's Experiment 101 also ported the game to next-gen consoles a year later.

There had been reports that developers initially wanted to port Biomutant to Nintendo Switch devices in 2022. A Portuguese retailer allegedly released promotional material stating that the game would go live on Switch that year. It remained to be seen whether the information was legitimate.

Biomutant received mixed reviews from gamers and critics alike. Some players claimed the creators had not lived up to their expectations. Others pointed out that while it had stunning visuals and rich lore, its gameplay mechanics failed to distinguish it from other action RPG titles.

Despite its lukewarm reception, THQ Nordiq reported that the game reached 1 million downloads a month after its debut.
