It’s time to d-d-duel– whoops, wrong game. DNF DUEL opens our list with a bang. Arc System Works took characters from the popular Dungeon Fighter Online, and transformed them into 2D fighting game heroes. This game is praised for its impressive art style and simple, four-button combat system. Compared to other fighting games, DNF Duel is so much easier to learn.

Even if you're not interested in spending hours practicing for online matches, you may still be drawn to the game's unique, quirky characters and their crazy movesets. Like Grappler, if you’re a smooth brain. A playscore of 8.5.

Basketball fans will love NBA 2K23. It’s a big jump in quality over past releases and the best game of the series. With PS5’s powerful hardware, the game’s performance is at its most optimal — buttery-smooth graphics. Its selection of online modes will have you compete with other players; of course, you can also play solo.

Here’s the kicker. Since it’s a 2K game, expect micro-transactions and cringey product placements. Overall, fans of the series will still enjoy it. It has a playscore of 8.5.

If you enjoy lightsabers swinging, Stormtrooper blasting, or basically anything Star Wars, this massive selection of all 9 chapters is yours for the taking.

With so much content packed into one game, the number of playable characters gives more variety to your adventures. You could even play as the Mandalorian with the adorable Baby Yoda going along for the ride.

It’s lighthearted fun and doesn't take the Saga too seriously, and you’d be laughing your ass off with its goofy humor. A playscore 8.7

Most important of all, Stray doesn't overstay its welcome. In 6 hours or so, you'll feel attached to this adorable kitten and its robot companion B12. A short and sweet experience. The cherry on top is the dedicated "meow" button. It has a playscore of 8.8.

No one’s stopping you from playing this game with a blindfold on, or playing it with a dance pad. Nothing beats the feeling of beating Margit for the first time, and that’s only the first big boss. Elden Ring is a spectacular game from start to finish with a playscore of 9.4

But alas, it couldn’t lay a finger on our best PlayStation 5 game this year…

All they did was crank it up a notch and scaled the epicness to 11. Giving us the most action-packed finale to this father and son duo in the Norse Realm. From your first fight with Thor, to fulfilling the Prophecy of the Giants, God of War Ragnarok is a stellar achievement from Santa Monica Studios with a playscore of 9.5

The age of exclusives nears its end as everyone’s favorite neighborhood superhero swings into PC. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered has all the web-slinging shenanigans Peter Parker has to offer. Its crisp new visuals and improved performance on PC make swinging between buildings oh so satisfying. This is topped by the cast’s strong performances and an impressive roster of villains.

While the story doesn’t deviate much from the original, some players – especially those familiar with the first game – may find Peter’s updated model a bit strange.

Overall, this is one of the best superhero games ever made. It has a playscore of 9.2.

This is the first of the Trails series’ Crossbell arc. That means we get to see a whole new location to explore, a conspiracy to uncover, and a bunch of fascinating characters to meet.

Much like other great JRPGs, it's praised for its well-written story; one that takes place within the massive Trails universe. Yes, including Cold Steel and Trails in the Sky.

The old-school turn-based mechanics can be daunting. But if you’re seeking a game with a memorable plot and an epic soundtrack, this is the one. A playscore of 9.2

Despite the challenges and frustration it can cause, we're still willing to give Cuphead a try. The Delicious Last Course, or DLC, is an expansion of Cuphead’s story. With tough bosses and challenging levels, prepare to pull your hair once more. But this hasn’t stopped us from smacking enemies down before. Why should it stop us now?

The addition of Ms. Chalice as a playable character adds new dynamics to the game. She demands more skills but once you master her moves, she’s a force to be reckoned with. A playscore of 9.2

7. NORCO

NORCO is a unique game that uses traditional point-and-click mechanics to piece together an emotional story. It stands out from other games for its engaging and thought-provoking narrative. Finding clues, making choices, and solving a few simple puzzles are the three things you only need to worry about.

NORCO is a critique on the dystopian delights that we’ve been playing again and again in other games. And its enchanting soundtrack lures us into a world slowly losing touch of nature. It receives a playscore of 9.2

6. Final Fantasy VI

You might be surprised how this 28 year old JRPG made it to 6th place. Well, it came out on PC as part of the Pixel Remaster that polished the first six games of Square’s renowned series.

This Remastered version improves the visual quality of their signature sprite characters, as well as the soundtrack, smoother UI, among many things. Apart from that, much of the story remains unchanged.

A hot take: 6 could’ve been the best Final Fantasy if VII didn’t exist. The journey of Terra and her quest to save the planet is not something that we can simply forget. If you ask a Final Fantasy fanboy what their favorite entry is, you might be surprised to find this on their top three. A playscore of 9.3

5. Vampire Survivors

Can you imagine a bullet-hell game where you are the bullet-hell? Vampire Survivors is the most videogame-y videogame of the year. Imagine: you’re a lone hero swarmed by waves after waves of monsters. That shouldn’t worry you. Once you get enough powers, you won’t be pressing buttons for a while.

Its simple and addicting roguelike formula is mixed with the mechanical gameplay of an idle-clicker. This is exactly why Vampire Survivors shines. It’s a game that you can pick-up and play in short bursts…any time. Perfect if you own a Steam Deck!

It has a playscore of 9.3.

The quest to preserve your lineage is just as addicting and will keep you playing for more. The premise is simple: Enter the Castle, slay beasts, die, and respawn as your next of kin. You can be a colorblind warrior or an archer with vertigo on your next run.

Rogue Legacy 2 is better by a mile. The addition of relics, items that will power you up during one of your heir’s journeys, changes the way you will play.

This unique gameplay loop has continued to hook players ever since the first game. It receives a playscore of 9.3.

3. Neon White

Neon White’s energetic approach to combat is like watching a Doom speedrunner high on caffeine. This is exactly what makes this indie-shooter great.

Redeem yourself in the gates of heaven as you slay enemies in tightly designed levels. Sacrificing cards for godlike abilities turns you into a one-man army.

It’s a game about beating your own record. There’s always an optimal way to do things and you’re free to experiment with crazy movesets… so long as you don’t suffer from video game nausea.

Even if you don’t care about its cheesy story, Neon White has enough challenges to distract you from its questionable writing choices. Neon White has a playscore of 9.4

2. God Of War

In second place is God Of War. It came out this year along with Spider-Man and shows how great these games are when played on more powerful hardware.

The beginning of Kratos and Atreus’ journey isn’t as exhilarating as Ragnarok. But its focus on character development made players connect with these lost demigods.

God of War’s release on PC is praised by both critics and gamers. It may be a simple port, but the enhancements to performance and visual fidelity makes the PC version the best to play.

The Norse realm is dangerous, but that won’t stop this father-son duo from spreading their mother’s ashes on the highest peak of all the Nine Realms. It gets a playscore of 9.5

1. Elden Ring

Winner of this year’s Game Awards and our top PC game this year is none other than Bill Clinton– I mean, Elden Ring.

We’ll say it again. Elden Ring is a stellar achievement in video games. Pushing the limits to what a game should be. It expands player freedom as they explore the dangerous, yet gorgeous landscapes of The Lands Between.

The open-world formula isn’t borrowing pesky checklists from other AAA studios. Instead, Elden Ring lets players decide where to go and what to do.

The game is focused on creating a rich, immersive world, so be sure to treat the inhabitants and creatures you encounter with respect - you never know what you might find, like a Turtle Pope in a Church.

With a playscore of 9.6, Elden Ring won’t go out of our radar anytime soon.

Ahh, the pigtailed witch herself. This one got widely different ratings from critics. Some gave it a 6, while others closer to a perfect 10/10. Is it the worst? Or is it the best of the series? Which is it?

Blame it on the Infernal Demons that you can summon in battle. These incredible monsters can imbue Bayonetta with extra powers, too. However, while they are active Bayonetta can still sustain damages. You really have to be strategic about when you release your demons.

But the best part of Bayonetta 3 has to be the other characters you get to play. Jeanne in her 2D stealth missions, or Viola with her unique movesets. These two may challenge the habits of long term fans and contribute to the game feeling fresh all throughout.

And with that, this highly replayable game gets a playscore of 8.9.

9. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was an unexpectedly great game. The sequel is even better. This seems to be the running theme of the video.

Sparks of Hope gets its name from Sparks. These cute little creatures give buffs that you can mix and match with the 9 characters you unlock in the game. Since a lot of characters can already be unlocked after beating the first world, it’s so much easier to learn how they synergize with each other, making this tactical RPG that much deeper.

As expected, this mario game remains accessible to anyone from little kids to adults. Actually, maybe this time even more so with the customizable difficulty – like how much health is restored at every new level, enemies’ health and damage, and more.

Sparks of Hope shines with a playscore of 8.9.

8. Splatoon 3

At first, it might seem a little redundant. Why would Nintendo release Splatoon 3 on the Switch when we already have Splatoon 2? Well, that’s because they made it better. Quality of life improvements, better visuals, better lobby systems, new classes, new weapons, and even new moves (squid roll, and squid surge).

If you’ve played the Octo Expansion on Splatoon 2, this one will feel very familiar – even down to the server problems, let’s be honest. But the new story, the training systems and all the little things Nintendo added on release nets this game a playscore of 8.9.

7. No Man’s Sky

It’s truly shocking how well No Man’s Sky works on the Switch. This is what happens when the team keeps working on making their games better. Is it the most high definition version of the game you can play out there– psh no… BUT games are more than their graphics! This one remains to be an interplanetary explorer’s dream.

Plus there’s so much to do! Learning alien languages, looting other space ships, or even just building your home on an idyllic planet somewhere. We really miss having the multiplayer mode on the Switch version. As a single-player only experience, it gets a playscore of 9.0.

Now if you want to play multiplayer, Shredder’s Revenge is a great pick up. Sure, you can play this solo, but it’s just not the same.

This is a great tribute to old-school arcade beat-em-ups – from the art direction, down to the controls and mechanics. The story mode is so much fun and easy enough for beginners to enjoy, while arcade is the mode where most veterans will get their fix from. This one gets a 9/10.

For the uninitiated, this one’s a murder mystery visual novel with hard puzzles, great writing, and a cast of quirky characters. The way we solve the mysteries in this game involve going deep into our suspects’ subconscious to look for possible clues and motives.

New in NirvanA Initiative are the VR sequences for recreating crime scenes. These remind me so much of Detroit Become Human’s Connor investigation scenes. I don’t want to spoil it, so that’s it for a game that has a playscore of 9.1.

This post-apocalyptic, cute as heck game about a pink ball who likes to suck just feels so right. This is how Kirby should be played – in a true 3D setting. It’s intuitive, colorful, and the new mechanics are oh so satisfying.

Kirby games are primarily aimed at kids so they’re usually super easy, but this one’s FINALLY got a wild mode. It’s still not Elden Ring hard, of course, but we finally get a hint of a challenge for older Kirby fans. This adora-ball gets a playscore of 9.1.

As Jayne from whatoplay.com puts it, there are some stories that would only work in [video] game[s]. This one is a perfect example.

This game has an extremely complex story starring 13 playable characters who are destined to eventually pilot machines called the Sentinels. It’s a post-apocalyptic story filled with so many plot twists and multiple endings.

It’s a beautiful mix of visual novel storytelling and mech strategy. During mech battles, frame rate drops are noticeable but ultimately don't affect gameplay all that much. And so, it gets a playscore of 9.2.

2. NieR: Automata The End of YoRHa Edition

5 years after first being released on PC, the Switch finally gets NieR: Automata The End of Yorha Edition which is the base game plus all the DLCs in one package. And it is nothing short of a miracle.

While it’s not as detailed as on other platforms, it’s crisp and vibrant. It only runs on 30 fps on the switch, whoa, big surprise there, but it’s absolutely fine. Frame rate drops for this big of a game is expected on the switch, but it doesn’t happen enough times to spoil the experience.

This portable version of a modern classic gets a playscore of 9.

1. Xenoblade Chronicles 3

This was so worth the wait. Just like Nier, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a revelation on the switch. It’s a huge open-world jam packed with incredible action, and well rounded characters.

Honestly, more than anything, the characters and the relationships they build with one another is the highlight of this game. There are so many meaningful moments that aren’t just exposition dumps sprinkled throughout.

By the time you finish the hundred hours needed to complete the game, you will be attached to all of these guys. Friendship truly is magic. So yeah, it’s been fun. A playscore of 9.3.

SYNCED, the looter-shooter game where humans fight against nanobots, has welcomed players for its Open Beta event. Developer NExt Studio and publisher Level Infinite confirmed that the Open Beta for SYNCED went live last December 10, 2022.

The limited event will run until January 15, they wrote in a statement. Creators also dropped a video preview on YouTube, providing gamers a glimpse into its gameplay.

The upcoming game's Open Beta allowed players to access three primary modes for the first time. These are the PvE, PvP, and co-op gameplay. Players can experience SYNCED's Open Beta via Steam or the game's official website.

The game is also available for PC players to pre-download, developers added.

SYNCED is a third-person shooter game that takes players to the post-apocalyptic world of Meridian. The game is set after a technological disaster known as the "Collapse," in which Nanos, also known as nanite machines, have turned against humanity and sought to destroy it. Players must navigate the dangerous world of Meridian and fight against the Nanos to survive.

As part of a group of survivors known as the Runners, players must team up in squads of three to explore the Nano-infested regions of Meridian in search of the valuable Nano-byproduct, Nerva. They must navigate treacherous terrain and avoid danger at every turn to succeed in their mission.

According to the developers, SYNCED will be a new and unique approach to the third-person looter-shooter genre. The game will let players to synchronize with deadly Nanos, allowing them to turn their enemies into allies. Defeated Nanos can be reprogrammed to serve as the players' guardians, the developers explained.

NExt Studio, the Shanghai-based independent game developer behind the hit horror narrative game Unheard, first released details about SYNCED last year.

Last September 2021, they invited selected players from Europe and North America for the game's limited Advance Alpha test. At that time, it was tentatively named SYNCED: Off-Planet.

SYNCED Welcomes Players for Its Open Beta

Hideo Kojima's action game, Death Stranding, is getting a sequel.

The renowned video game creator, Kojima Productions, formally announced at The Game Awards 2022 that work has begun on Death Stranding 2.

Developers have yet to disclose its release date. However, they revealed that the game would debut on PlayStation 5. Kojima Productions also unveiled its teaser trailer during The Game Awards 2022. The video showed Norman Reedus and Lea Seydoux reprising their roles as Sam Porter Bridges and Fragile, respectively.

Like its predecessor, Hideo Kojima took the helm in developing Death Stranding 2. He will serve as the upcoming game's producer, writer, designer, and director, the gaming studio said in a separate statement.

Hideo Kojima also attended The Game Awards 2022, which culminated on December 8. After presenting the trailer, he shared more details about Death Stranding 2's development. Kojima told the audience that he began writing the story for Death Stranding 2 a few months after the release of the first game. However, he said he had to rewrite "the whole thing from scratch" when the pandemic hit.

I also don't want to predict more futures so I rewrote it, Kojima added in jest. The Japanese game designer also said that, in addition to Death Stranding 2, he is working on a new game.

Before Kojima Productions made their announcement, there were speculations about a Death Stranding sequel. Last May, Norman Reedus told Kentucky-based LEO Magazine that they have "started the second one."

Death Stranding is Kojima's first major project following his highly publicized departure from KONAMI. The game was released first for PlayStation 4 in 2019, it was released on the PC in 2020.

Death Stranding became the title with the most nominations for The Game Awards 2019, including the Game of the Year category. It won the Best Game Direction Award. But it lost the Game of the Year award to Hidetaka Miyazaki's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Death Stranding has playscores 8.7 on PlayStation 4 and 8.8 on the PC.

Death Stranding 2 is Coming to PS5

Alderon Games has released the second official map of Path of Titans, the survival game where players become dinosaurs.

The Australian game developer confirmed that Path of Titans' latest update went live last December 7 (Australian time).

The developers said it is also the MMO game's biggest update yet. Alderon Games published an official trailer to mark its launch. With Australian TV personality Robert Irwin as its narrator, it highlighted the game's upcoming map, called Gondwa.

The world of Path of Titans has expanded in many ways, new underwater home caves and quests, new aquatic NPCs, and roosts and cliffs for Thalas to perch, developers described.

The game's creators based Gondwa on the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. Gondwa is an 'island world', and hosts various biomes. These include jagged red rocks, grasslands, salt flats, and deserts, to name a few.

Aside from a new map, players can also start exploring more about the pre-historic world in the Path of Titans as four new dinosaurs. Alderon Games rolled out the first flying and fully aquatic creatures. These are the Thalassodromeus and the Kaiwhekea, respectively.

However, Alderon Games disclosed that in the meantime, characters in Panjura cannot crossover to the new world, and vice-versa, in the game. "We plan on adding this in the future," they said.

While players can move their characters from one map to another on community servers, developers added they may experience "a handful of bugs" in doing so.

We will work on updates and improvements to this system as we work on bug fixes, they explained. Developers also said flyers and swimmers are only limited to the Gondwa map. On the other hand, in its latest update, Alderon has made several quality-of-life improvements to Path of Titans.

These included simplifying the game's entire Waystone system. They revealed that they added some gameplay mechanics to "maintain balance and prevent exploits or abuses."

Development for Path of Titans began in 2019. The game currently supports PC, PS5, Series X, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Android, and iOS.

A fan-favorite character from the hit Ghostbusters franchise is heading to PCs and gaming consoles next year. Game developer IllFonic confirmed that Muncher would appear in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed.

In a press release, the Colorado-based game creator said they are set to unroll the first DLC for the 3D asymmetrical, multiplayer game. They have yet to announce specific details about its release. But IllFonic said they will launch it "early the first quarter of 2023."

Muncher will be part of the game's first major update. Players can either take control of this metal-eating ghost or get their hands on him. This fan-favorite is the most requested Ghost IllFonic has received to date, developers said.

Aside from Munch, IllFonic will introduce a new map called The Facility. They have also revealed some information surrounding its lore.

A private investor group decided to buy the defunct health center to reopen it. But spooky activities made it impossible to make progress on their renovation works.

Construction workers no longer want to go back to the property. They discovered something that may explain why it became abandoned.

Jordan Mathewson, the game's design director, said the new map would give players a "more intimate and a creepier" gaming experience.

Mathewson added that gamers can expect varied corridors with medium-sized rooms built stacked up.

There will be some interesting ways to utilize these new areas in this map to each player's, Ghostbuster or Ghost, advantage. We will share more soon, he added.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed launched for PC, PS5, PS4, Series X, and Xbox One last October. Its storyline takes place after the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Wave Break, dubbed the first SkateBoating game, was released in 2020. At the time, only PC, Nintendo Switch, and Stadia users had access to the Miami Vice-inspired game. SkateBoating Game Wave Break To Welcome Xbox Players

The award-winning indie game Sky: Children of the Light will debut on PlayStation 4 this month.

Thatgamecompany confirmed that Sky: Children of the Light will go live on PlayStation beginning this December 6. The Santa Monica-based gaming studio also said the game could support cross-play. This means players can save their progress between mobile and console devices.

PlayStation players can look forward to wandering Sky: Children of the Light's beautiful world, unraveling its history, and forming bonds with other adventurers from around the globe, they added.

Meanwhile, Thatgamecompany also announced that Norwegian singer AURORA would headline the game's upcoming virtual concert.

Organizers are expecting more than 4,000 players of Sky: Children of the Light to join the occasion on December 8. They said that the event would be "revolutionary." They added it will be "powered by a proprietary game engine."

Thatgamecompany unveiled its plans to expand Sky: Children of the Light to PlayStation last August. Their announcement came a year after they released the game for Nintendo Switch.

Sky: Children of the Light first came out in 2019 for iOS devices.
