Yes. The best Switch game of the year so far is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It’s one of a handful of games where both players and critics agree.

This is how sequels SHOULD be, right? It built on top of mechanics introduced in Breath of the Wild and expanded the scope of the franchise. I can conjure praises after praises about how fun and innovative it is… But, you know what's the most important of all? It does not feel like a cash-grab like most sequels do.

It’s the game to beat for this year’s Game of the Year. Guess what though? It’s not the only good game on Switch this year.

Let’s start with JRPGs.

First we have Fire Emblem Engage. New to the JRPG genre? This is a perfect place to get started. Like other games of the Fire Emblem series, you don’t need to have played the past releases. It comes with a whole new story, has memorable characters, and the turn-based combat feels seamless.

Second is Octopath Traveler II. This is one of the best JRPGs on the Nintendo Switch. If you played the original, this is more like a continuation rather than a sequel. You will see tons of improvements: the storytelling, the characters and their interactions, the visuals, and the combat are way better.

For those looking for a dash of nostalgia, two good PS2 remakes have made it to the Switch this year.

Dokapon Kingdom Connect is not for everyone. This odd mix of board game mechanics and RPG is known for ruining friendships; like a crazier version of Mario Party for up to four players. It comes with updated graphics, a new soundtrack, and online multiplayer. Still, at $49.99, it feels expensive for what it offers.

That said, another PS2 classic from 18 years ago, We Love Katamari Reroll+ Royal Reverie, is priced just about right at $29.99. Whether you’re new to the series or a long-time fan... There’s no better time than now to dive into the chaotic joy of transforming a tiny ball into a gigantic bundle of everything!

Time to highlight some of Nintendo’s beloved characters.

Starting with a remake of a Wii game: Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe. Missed out on Kirby’s epic quests? This promises even more platforming goodness with its expanded roster of abilities, better graphics, and smoother gameplay.

As one reviewer puts it, “Whether you've played the Wii version or not, this remaster offers enough content to keep both newcomers and veterans busy for a while.”

Next is one of the best-looking Switch games today, Metroid Prime Remastered. They didn’t just increase the resolution, they also updated the character models, added new textures, and revamped the lighting. The result is a real improvement to an already amazing game from 20 years ago. This makes me more excited for the upcoming Metroid Prime 4.

Not feeling the first seven games? Here are three more to complete our Top 10.

We have the complete 3D remake of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-boot Camp. This is two strategy games in one package, and it’s tailored for the Nintendo Switch. If you played the originals on the Game Boy Advance, it will feel very familiar. The fundamentals are the same, with modern features like online multiplayer. If you haven’t, this will give you hours upon hours of fun and challenge.

Next is SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake. This is the best SpongeBob game of all time and will definitely make you feel like you’re in an episode of the cartoon. It’s fun, funny, and good where it matters. Triumphant in its silliness, it’s great for kids and the kids at heart.

To close this list is THEATRHYTHM FINAL BAR LINE, a rhythm game with a light touch of RPG. To those who love Final Fantasy, especially the music of Final Fantasy, this is the definitive way to experience and celebrate it. It comes with 385 ‘carefully’ selected tracks from the whole series. Trust me, even if you’ve never played a Final Fantasy game, you’ll find yourself humming along to classics like One Winged Angel.

Krafton Inc, the creator of the hit battle royale game PUBG, will release a new title next month. And this time, it will combine tower defense elements with a new genre.

The South Korean developer announced they will launch Defense Derby globally on August 3. Defense Derby can be played on iOS and Android phones, they said.

RisingWings, a Krafton subsidiary, is developing Defense Derby. To celebrate the official release, developers will roll out additional content. These are "Quest Mode" and enhanced Friendly Derby and spectator features.

Defense Derby's launch will also mark Krafton's foray into a new genre called "betting royale." The upcoming mobile game will combine tower defense and betting royale elements.

In the betting royale, each round begins with a "scouting stage." It lets players outbid each other in recruiting units needed to assemble their squads, Krafton described.

Players then must strategically deploy them within their castles. The developers added that the last player standing, with their castle intact, will emerge as the winner.

We are eager for players to engage with the innovative 'Betting Royale' genre this August, said Rafael Lim, Senior Head of the Publishing Business Division at Krafton.

Aside from the betting royale mechanics, Defense Derby will also contain other modes. These included dungeon, PvE Defense, and idle defense modes. Developers will also introduce a "Friendly Derby," where players can team up with friends.

According to Krafton, Defense Derby had a successful soft launch in six countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Canada, and Hong Kong.

Developers also said they had garnered positive feedback from players during the game's soft launch.

Meanwhile, Krafton has kicked off pre-registration for Defense Derby and will remain so until its official launch. They said pre-registered users will receive a "Welcome Package" filled with in-game bonuses at launch.

New Indie RPG Farsiders Gets Beta Launch

PC players can now experience the popular space-themed platformer mobile game Space Expedition.

Developer Mobirate dropped the PC version of Space Expedition via Steam on July 17. The Florida-based studio has also decided to launch the game for free following its decade-long success.

Originally released 10 years ago, Space Expedition has captivated the hearts of countless players worldwide, developers said.

Space Expedition first came out for Android and iOS devices in 2014. Since then, it has already amassed over 1 million downloads, according to Mobirate.

Aside from porting Space Expedition to the PC, Mobirate also revealed the development of a sequel. Titled Genopanic, the studio will release the game on PC via Steam on October 23.

Developers described Genopanic as a "mysterious cosmic adventure" game. They added that it combines classic platforming elements with a dark and non-linear story. Genopanic follows the events of the Space Expedition. Like its predecessor, it will feature pixel-art illustrations and platformer mechanics.

Genopanic and Space Expedition are games that immerse players in a beautiful and interconnected world, said Anton Belov, co-founder of Mobirate.

A horrific tragedy occurred on SIMBIRSK space station, where the story takes place. Players will have to explore the station with the help of two AI pets. They are LAIK, a friendly dog, and VOLGA, a mischievous cat-girl.

Along the way, they will encounter adorable and terrifying creatures. Since Genopanic is a non-linear game, players will have the choice to rescue or fight them.

The upcoming game also provides players with various weapons. These include swords, gravity guns, flamethrowers, and challenging boss battles.

Genopanic will also reveal the connection between Genopanic and the Space Expedition. The latter is set in the past on the ZARYA station on the planet Spectr.

Forklift Interactive, a new publisher founded by former tinyBuild and Adult Swim Games veterans, is set to release its first title this year. The Atlanta-based publisher announced that it will launch Desynced in August.

The debut title will enter early access on August 15 and be available to play on PC via Steam. Desynced is being developed by Stage Games.

It is a sci-fi, real-time strategy (RTS) game featuring beltless automation and customizable units. In it, players assume the roles of space explorers who crash-land on a strange planet full of resources and dangers.

They must build and automate a base, research new technologies, and repair their ship. They can also team up with other players online or compete against them in multiplayer matches.

Instead of managing the flow of materials, players must learn to manage the behavior of their bots, said Andrei Podoprigora, CEO of Forklift Interactive.

Fans of automation, base-building, and even RTS games will find something to love as they strive to build, explore, and survive on an alien world, he added. In Desynced, players can also find diverse biomes, dynamic weather, and hostile alien creatures.

The Early Access version of the game will allow gamers to play "dozens of hours" in sandbox mode, the publisher said. They added that it will also contain several story elements.

Forklift disclosed that work is ongoing on various aspects of the game, including several assets and gameplay mechanics.

Faction Two assets are incomplete. Faction Two and Three are not gameplay complete. They have missing items in their tech trees, they said.

We have been itching to build this game for years now, said Simon Bradbury, Co-Founder and Design Lead at Firefly Studios. It's been exciting getting to work with some of the team from back in 1999. Coders, artists, even some of the original voice actors! Stronghold is over 20 years old now, but getting our hands on many areas of the game, like updated art, better UI, UX improvements and new campaign missions, these are all things that make us happy. This is the start of a new era for Stronghold and we can't wait to show you what we've been working on.

Stronghold: Definitive Edition continues its legacy with the skills of the original team. Relive the creations of the original designers, artists, actors, and composer Robert L. Euvino.

In Stronghold, players will siege unforgettable villains and manage bustling castle economies. They can opt for combat-free gameplay through various economic game modes. Players can now experience the game with enhanced visuals and siege scenarios.

The game features the original Stronghold's classic military and economic campaigns. The latest addition to the "castle sim" series is a new 14-mission narrative campaign. The campaign is designed by Firefly Studio's founders, Simon Bradbury and Eric Ouellette. A 10-mission "Castle Trail" mode challenges players to defend or besiege historical castles.

The game includes new single-player content, technical enhancements, and quality-of-life improvements. It is now possible for players to customize the features and controls of the game based on their preferences. With Steam multiplayer support, players can wage war against each other online. Players can design challenging maps or download hundreds of player-created maps from the Steam Workshop.

Stronghold: Definitive Edition is now available to wishlist on Steam before its release on November 7.

In Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients, players take on the role of Astor, a young warrior who embarks on a perilous journey to unearth the secrets of the past and fight for the planet's survival. The game is set in the mystical world of Gliese, which is full of mystery and danger. Astor will encounter abandoned ruins and derelict temples, as well as a variety of memorable and endearing characters.

With Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients our goal is to create a mystical world full of whimsical characters and creatures, like the fantasy movies we grew up with back in the 80s and 90s, said Luis Correa, Founder & game director at C2 Game Studio. We wanted to marry a lush, stylized world with first-rate combat, and were inspired by titles like Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry, God of War and Nier Automata. Monolith is a love letter to all the grandiose action-adventure games that inspired us so much, both in our youth and to this day!

The Versus Evil team loved Monolith from the beginning, but it was the combat that really put it over the top for us, said Steve Escalante, general manager of Versus Evil. Today, there is no more credit for 'it's an indie game' and teams have to meet that challenge, regardless of size or budget. The C2 Game Studio team, together working with Versus Evil, is intent on blurring the line between AAA and indie. The graphics, animation, production value and scope of the project were miles beyond what I imagined such a small team could be capable of and we are proud to present Monolith as another quality RPG adventure to our line up.

Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients is set to captivate fans of action-adventure games, making it one of the most anticipated titles of 2024.
