The <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/multiplayer/">multiplayer</a> <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/open-world/">open-world</a> survival game from Starry Studio, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/once-human/">Once Human</a>, announced their Closed Beta Test (CBT). Starting April 3, players had the chance to experience new gameplay from the CBT.

</div>

The Closed Beta introduces a handful of new features. These include the new ‘Deviation’ companions.

These are SCP-style monsters with detailed designs. They can fight and heal, among other supporting abilities. These otherworldly friends will serve as allies against the supernatural.

Deviations can also aid outside of battle. Companions can assist in constructing and maintaining player homes. From cutting down trees and generating power, to guarding the territory from enemies. It's similar to Pals in <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/palworld/">Palworld</a>.

Once Human’s latest Closed Beta also introduces Eternaland. It is new realm that acts as a safe haven from monsters. It is a place of peace and prosperity existing outside the bounds of the nightmare world. Players, or Meta-Humans, can visit Eternaland and make a new life for themselves.

This new region encourages community. It has cross-server functionality that lets players invite friends to hang out and host parties. They can also take part in friendly competitions such as racing.

The CBT also includes a handful of new content for PvP and PvE as well. PvE is taking a major focus as players must team up to face massive Manibus enemies.

The PvP season includes two new modes: Caravan Battle and Cargo Conquest.

In Caravan Battle, a team of players defend a caravan full of loot as they travel across the countryside and salvage other vehicles along the way.

In Cargo Conquest, players possess parasites that force them to attack other players. However, there’s a chance that killing an infected player will cause the parasite to move to a new host.

Once Human’s Closed Beta Test is still ongoing. It will last for 42 days beginning from its launch on April 3rd. It is one of the <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/upcoming/">most anticipated videogames</a> of 2024 with over 9 million registered users so far.

Usual Suspects, developers of the third person <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/open-world/">open-world</a> simulation <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/its-only-money/">It’s Only Money</a>, found a publisher in Firestoke. The publisher announced their parternship with a hilarious press release.

The press release began: "Firestoke are pleased and also slightly concerned to announce that they’ve entered into a partnership with developer Usual Suspects..."

"Despite barely being able to tie their own shoelaces, these clowns have somehow managed to make a ruthlessly compelling and colourful 3rd person open world simulation that supports up to 4-player <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/multiplayer/">multiplayer</a>," Firestoke continued.

This press release was par for the course for It's Only Money. In it, players take the shoes of an Undercity resident cast down by a tyrannical mayor. The goal is to venture to the surface to steal, fight, and defeat evil corporations under the Mayor's thumb.

The game takes place in the commercial city of Rockhaven. It serves as the game's playground where players complete missions by breaking the law. The recommended activities are stealing from the rich and taking their cars.

Players can also get into fights with the local police force. This is all the more enjoyable with its four player <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/coop">co-op</a>. Play with up three friends and destabilize the system in comedic ways.

A PvP mode is also available. Minigames such as Prop Hunt add a change of pace to the game's mayhem.

It's Only Money is currently on Steam's Early Access. Firestoke plans to drop new content when Season 2 arrives on April 23rd. This includes vehicle updates and AI improvements.

CEO of Firestoke, Paul Farley, continued the tirade of backhanded compliments. ""It might seem a little strange to publicly insult a development partner in a press release, but trust me, those guys aren't going to see this - they couldn’t even figure out how to rent office space, so I doubt they've even discovered the internet yet,” he said.

Meanwhile, Usual Suspects Co-Founder returned the gesture with equally irreverent remarks.

“It means so much to toil away, giving up our blood, sweat and tears for a product, only for it to now be controlled by a corporate entity," the co-founder said.

"Nothing makes us happier as a team knowing that our dream of being game developers has become a living nightmare for the foreseeable future. Thanks Firestoke," he contined.

Check out the game's <a href="https://store.steampowered.com/app/1415220/Its_Only_Money?snr=1_7_15__13">Steam page</a> and <a href="https://planofattack.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=bb3a3c27095f343ef67c62d5b&id=f95fe9e757&e=e76776be28">Discord server</a> for more information.

Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm just unleashed a new gameplay trailer for The Kombat Pack, the latest content update of Mortal Kombat 1. And it confirmed not only one but two new playable characters.

Aside from the fan-favorite Ermac, creators also introduced a new Kameo Fighter - Mavado.

Kombat Pack owners can experience Ermac beginning on April 16th, Joshua Ball, publicist of Warner Bros. Games said. All players will be able to challenge the soul-powered fighter on April 23rd.

Mavado will make his debut this May. A specific date has yet to be revealed.

For Mortal Kombat 1, developers from NetherRealm will be exploring a new lore for Ermac.

No longer a pawn to the dark sorcerer Quan Chi, players will expect a more independent Ermac. In the game, he will be carving his own path and find a new purpose.

The trailer for The Kombat Pack also revealed some of Ermac's movesets and abilities.

These included teleportation and levitating across battlefields. Additionally, he can command a legion of souls to fight enemies.

The upcoming downloadable content (DLC) will also welcome a new fighter, Mavado.

Developers are expected to reveal more details about the new Kameo Fighter soon.

On top of new playable characters, The Kombat Pack contains additional items and content to the game. These included new skins for Johnny Cage, like the classic Jean-Claude Van Damme character.

It will also allow players access a week-long access to six DLC characters, including five Kameo Fighters. For a limited time, gamers can experience Omni-Man, Quan Chi, Peacemaker, Ermac, the upcoming Homelander, and Takeda Takahashi.

The reveal dates for the five Kameo Fighters will be announced later, Warner Bros. Games said.

Mortal Kombat 1 is the 12th installment of the legendary action franchise. Released in 2023, it also served as a reboot of the 2011 Mortal Kombat game.

The game received generally positive reviews upon its release. On whatoplay, it received its highest playscore of 8.6 on PS5, earning a place <a href="https://whatoplay.com/ps5/best/multiplayer/">the best PS5 multiplayer</a> list.

Here is something <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/indie/">indie</a> and <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/horror/">horror</a> game fans might look forward to.

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/tales-from-candleforth/">Tales from Candleforth,</a> the latest title from Polish publisher Feardemic, is set to welcome players soon. The horror-themed, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/point-and-click/">point-and-click</a> will make its debut this April 30.

In a press release, Feardemic confirmed they will launch Tales from Candleforth on <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/upcoming/">PC</a> and consoles like <a href="https://whatoplay.com/ps5/upcoming/">PlayStation</a>, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-series-x/upcoming/">Xbox</a>, and <a href="https://whatoplay.com/switch/upcoming/">Nintendo Switch</a>. The game will be available for players worldwide, the publisher added.

Tales from Candleforth tells the story of a collection of folk and fairytales. Their purpose was to hide the contents of the forbidden book. However, years later, the dark text started to bleed out, and spread onto the pages of the tales. As a result, the line between nightmare and reality began to blur.

Tales from Candleforth will feature <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/puzzle/">puzzles</a> and escape-the-room mechanics. Together with hand-drawn, 2D artworks, these will also serve as its narrative device.

Developers already revealed the first tale that will greet players. In it, they will become Sarah, a 16-year-old tasked to run their family's apothecary in the titular village. Aside from running the shop, they will also guide Sarah in collecting clues about her missing grandmother.

"As Sarah discovers new powers that only the women in her family can inherit, she adventures into a world of occultism, mystery, and horror to uncover the secrets her family is hiding and discover the part she plays in all of it," they said.

Tales from Candleforth is being developed by Under the Bed Games, an indie studio based in Spain. It is also their debut project.
The game has already received multiple recognitions prior to its release. Tales from Candleforth was named the Best Puzzle Game for <a href="https://www.indiedevday.es/en/">IndieDev2023</a>, and Best Art Direction in Gamepolis 2022. / ###

This <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/coop/">co-op</a> ‘exterminator-like’ <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/shooter/">shooter</a> pits players against an overwhelming swarm of arachnids.

Take part in this multiversal battle against spiders. In this game, players will have to use a variety of high-tech weaponry to squash these species across spacetime. Each of its new locations, such as Spider City and Haunted Mansion offer, its own set of challenges.

This sequel will have new mechanics like ‘Potion Brewing’ which provide unique ways to slay bugs. Players can concoct special brews to enhance their extermination power. The ‘weapon upgrade’ feature can also unlock special abilities. This fresh selection of tools increases the chances against certain breeds of spiders.

This Early Access launch also includes big changes for its <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/multiplayer/">multiplayer</a> with its two brand new modes. Spider Hunt and Campaign co-op add unique ways to play in their bug-hunting formula.

Spider Hunt twists the bug-hunting mechanic by going toe-to-toe against players. They can choose between Spider and Exterminator.

Exterminators must eliminate rival player spiders without completely destroying the map. Spider players will scramble to survive until time runs out.

There’s a selection of three Spider Hunt levels available when the game launches on Early Access.

The developer, Casey Donnellan, premieres the first developer diary on April 4. It's part of a new series featuring an inside look at what’s to come.

Steampunk RPG New Arc Line Drops New Trailer

Creators Krafton and Bluhole Studio are bringing the extraction <a href="https://whatoplay.com/android/best/rpg/">RPG</a> ‘Dark and Darker’ to mobile this year.

In a press release, the publisher has promised unique-to-mobile features in version. This means more challenges await players with several new ways to play.

The new Sidekick system can give players a boost in their dungeon-diving <a href="https://whatoplay.com/android/best/adventure/">adventures</a>. With the system, players can recruit AI-controlled companions that they can level up.

Players can also take advantage of the pet system. This grants various buffs before entering a dungeon.

Among the key additions include high-level “endgame” dungeons. This Player vs. Environment (PvE) aspect will test players with their best-equipped characters. It will also give players unique rewards.

As for its Player vs. Player(PvP), it is all about crossing swords with competing player-controlled dungeon divers.

Dark and Darker is an extraction RPG. Players get new equipment and loot in every dungeon-dive. To survive, players will have to battle monsters and find treasure.

They begin their Dark and Darker Mobile adventure by creating a character. The character can be one of five classes: Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue, Ranger, or Cleric.

It came out on Steam last year under a different developer, Ironmace. This version was removed due to a copyright infringement claim from Nexon, a South Korean Game Publisher.

The game was a viral hit on launch, with many content creators enjoying its gameplay loop.

In 2023, Krafton entered a licensing partnership with Ironmace to develop this mobile adaptation. No word yet on whether Krafton will bring Dark and Darker to Steam.

This mobile version will expand its playerbase as it is targeting a global release in 2024.

Aside from being a mobile release, no platforms have been announced for Dark and Darker Mobile.

Krafton is set to conduct a test demo in Korea. It will be held from April 24 to April 28. Players can access it on Android OS-based devices.

‘Dark And Darker Mobile’ Coming this Year

Players looking forward to experiencing a new, swashbuckler <a href="https://whatoplay.com/ps5/upcoming/adventure/">adventure</a> are in for a treat this year.

French video game publisher Microids revealed its latest project, and it is a pirate <a href="https://whatoplay.com/ps5/upcoming/RPG/">RPG</a> titled Flint: Treasure of Oblivion. It is currently being developed by Savage Level, also a French gaming studio.

Flint: Treasure of Oblivion is Savage Level's debut project. The upcoming title is expected to arrive within Q4 this year. Microids will roll out the game to <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/upcoming/adventure/">PC</a>, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/ps5/upcoming/adventure/">PlayStation 5</a>, and <a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-series-x/upcoming/adventure/">Xbox Series X|S</a>.

Creators of Flint: Treasure of Oblivion promised to bring an 'immersive and strategic experience.' They described the game as one that goes beyond the typical caricature of pirate life.

In Flint: Treasure of Oblivion, players will be thrown to the 'Golden Era of Piracy'. They will take the helm as Captain Flint, alongside his loyal first mate Billy Bones and a 'crew of cutthroat scallywags. As Captain Flint, they will embark on a perilous quest for a legendary treasure that promises both freedom and untold riches.

Savage Level also decided to blend fantasy elements with history for Flint: Treasure of Oblivion. The game gave Aurélien and Maxime Josse, founders of Savage Level, the opportunity to accurately portray what piracy was really about. The game will feature real key locations in piracy's heydays like the French city of Saint-Malo and central America.

In addition, Flint: Treasure of Oblivion also aims to evolve from 'clichés of narration in video games', the Josse brothers added. As a result, they incorporated a comic-book style narrative, using Franco-Belgian tradition.

On the other hand, the core gameplay of Flint: Treasure of Oblivion involved turn-based combat and strategy. Each of Captain Flint's crew possesses unique skills and abilities. This will allow players to carefully consider their tactics in every encounter.

The game's battle mechanics also took inspiration from classic RPG, by dice rolls and leveraging strategic cards.

Flint: Treasure of Oblivion is now available for wishlist on Steam, Epic Game Store, GOG and PlayStation Store. / ###

<h2>Ghost of Tsushima</h2>

 <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/ghost-of-tsushima-directors-cut/" title="Ghost of Tsushima PC game">PC</a> &mdash;<a href="https://whatoplay.com/ps5/ghost-of-tsushima-directors-cut/" title="Ghost of Tsushima PS5 game">PS5</a>
	&mdash; <a href="https://whatoplay.com/ps4/ghost-of-tsushima-directors-cut/" title="Ghost of Tsushima PS4 game">PS4</a>

If we’re talking about swords, samurais, and Shoguns, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/ghost-of-tsushima-directors-cut/">Ghost Of Tsushima</a> has everything. It’s an <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/open-world/">open-world</a> playground where you can play a samurai in the battle against invading Mongols.

The story takes place in 1274 during the Kamakura Shogunate. The expansionist Mongol horde challenges the might of Japan’s united military. They move into Tsushima where Jin Sakai rules as the Samurai Lord.

Ghost of Tsushima was never meant to be a historically accurate account. Instead, it focuses on Jin’s inner demons. As he struggles to defend the island, making detours to pet fox guardians, he also walks the tightrope of Samurai honor.

The Shogun doesn't make an appearance here but he plays a major part in deploying the samurai forces. This all leads to a heroic defense of the precious island of Tsushima.

FX’s new Shogun TV series had us wanting more stories that take place during Japan’s Shogunate periods. In this list, we want to share our picks for the best games to play that will scratch that Shogun itch.

<h2>Sengoku Dynasty</h2>

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/sengoku-dynasty/" title="Sengoku Dynasty PC game">PC</a>

There’s more to Shogun than swords. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/sengoku-dynasty/">Sengoku Dynasty </a>is set during Japan’s medieval age. This <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/open-world/">open-world</a> <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/rpg">RPG</a> city-builder lets you create your idyllic Japanese village with a flourishing community.

It's a step back from the Shogunate politics. Instead of amassing an army of samurai, you can manage your village as a craftsman, warrior, or monk.

The game’s open world encourages players to explore the feudal lands of the era. The diverse biomes offer an array of resources. You can use these to improve your homestead or take better care of the villagers.

Currently available on Steam’s Early Access, the devs still have a lot of things to iron out. The more common complaints are the tedious grind and poor quality of life. Here’s hoping these get fixed before its full release.

<h2>Total War: Shogun 2</h2>

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/total-war-shogun-2/" title="Total War: Shogun 2 PC game">PC</a>

Put your military tactics to the test in this award-winning mix of <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/turn-based-strategy/">turn-based strategy</a> and real-time tactics. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/total-war-shogun-2/">Total War: Shogun 2</a> is the perfect game if you’re looking to relive the epic, large-scale battles of 16th-century Japan.

This is the follow-up to the first-ever Total War game released in 2000, <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/shogun-total-war/">Shogun: Total War</a>. It’s set during the chaotic Sengoku Jidai or Warring States period, the same period covered by the TV series.

If you’re obsessed with FX’s Shogun series, this is the ideal game to play. Turn power fantasy into reality by leading your armies to hell and back in the name of conquest and glory. By roleplaying as Shogun, you decide your army’s every move.

For many fans, this is the peak of Total War games. It will take a while to get used to the mechanics. But once you put two and two together, it’s a time-sink.

<h2>Samurai Warriors 5</h2>

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/samurai-warriors-5/" title="Samurai Warriors 5 PC game">PC</a> &mdash;<a href="https://whatoplay.com/ps4/samurai-warriors-5/" title="Samurai Warriors 5 PS4 game">PS4</a> &mdash;<a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/samurai-warriors-5/" title="Samurai Warriors 5 Xbox One game">Xbox One</a> &mdash;<a href="https://whatoplay.com/switch/samurai-warriors-5/" title="Samurai Warriors 5 Switch game">Switch</a>

Koei Tecmo’s musou-style gameplay is a great way to roleplay as katana-wielding badasses. Forget strategy and let your instincts guide you to victory.

In <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/samurai-warriors-5/">Samurai Warriors 5</a>, you’ll have hundreds of enemies to face and you’ll get that dopamine rush as you thin the hordes.

You can choose from 27 warriors from the Sengoku period. From the iconic Oda Nobunaga to the legendary Yasuke, the first black Samurai. Their skills allow you to decimate enemies in unique ways.

Yes, the campaign takes place during the Sengoku era…but it’s a mishmash of events designed more for fun than history. That, however, doesn’t take away the fun of its fast-paced action.

<h2>Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun</h2>

Next is a little-known tabletop <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/best/strategy/">strategy</a> game. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/sengoku-jidai-shadow-of-the-shogun/">Shadow of the Shogun</a> pits you against massive armies in turn-based combat.

The game spans three interconnected stories during East Asia’s turbulent years. It focuses on three major events of that period: Japan’s warring states, its subsequent invasion of Korea’s Joseon Dynasty, and the intervention by China’s Ming Dynasty.

This 16th-century warfare will have you lead armies, with their own set of military tactics. You can create ‘what if’ scenarios and decide on Asia’s future. The game tries to be as authentic as possible, taking into account historical military outfits of the period and region for accuracy.

It’s not as popular as other games in this list but Steam reviews are “Mostly Positive.”

<h2>NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION: Sphere of Influence</h2>

&mdash; Android

Before Tokugawa’s reign, there was Nobunaga. Koei Tecmo celebrates its 30th Anniversary with the release of the definitive edition of Nobunaga’s Ambition.

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/nobunagas-ambition-sphere-of-influence/">Sphere Of Influence</a> came out in 2015 and almost a decade later, players continue to revisit their favorite moments of Sengoku Jidai.

It’s another play on power fantasy as it raises you to the role of feudal lord, or Daimyo. Leading and marching your armies into the battlefield.

It may not have Ghost of Tsushima’s gameplay, but the tactics are as realistic as it gets.

Recreating the ‘Battle of Sekigahara’ in your own way allows you to explore different outcomes. James Clavell’s Shogun leads up to this same battle. That’s all the more reason for you to check this one out and witness History in the making.

<h2>Shadow Tactics: Blades Of The Shogun</h2>

There is more to war than on the field; wars are won in the shadows.

Master the art of espionage in this tactical strategy game. <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/shadow-tactics-blades-of-the-shogun/">Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun</a> moves the fight for the Shogunate from the battlefield to the dark corners of the palace, in silence.

The Edo period is a time of great change. Command a band of five assassins and ensure the safety of the new Shogun. Rid Japan of conspiracies and rebellion in seemingly impossible stealth missions.

With its non-linear level design, there are dozens of ways to finish a mission. Blend in as a Geisha or jump from roof to roof. It encourages you to evaluate your surroundings and create your own ingenious ways of fulfilling objectives.

<h2>Trek to Yomi</h2>

	&mdash;<a href="https://whatoplay.com/xbox-one/trek-to-yomi/" title="Trek to Yomi Xbox One game">Xbox One</a>

Let’s slow it down just a bit. The monochromatic visual style of <a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/trek-to-yomi/">Trek To Yomi</a> reminds me of Akira Kurosawa’s films. Its black and white landscapes emanate a foreboding journey for our protagonist.

Trek To Yomi doesn’t put you in the front of a banzai charge. Instead, you play the role of the swordsman Hiroki on his quest for vengeance. His lust for revenge takes him to the land of the dead. Its gorgeous 2.5D visuals immerses us in a deep and supernatural narrative experience.

We journey with Hiroki as he confronts the evils of his past, with the help of his trusty blade. Trek to Yomi’s side-scrolling gameplay evokes a cinematic feel as silhouettes and shadows fill the screen.

<h2>Like a Dragon: Ishin!</h2>

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/like-a-dragon-ishin/" title="Like a Dragon: Ishin! PC game">PC</a>

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/pc/like-a-dragon-ishin/">Like A Dragon: Ishin! </a>is very much like other Yakuza games. Except it doesn’t take place in modern Japan. Set during the Edo Period, we play as Sakamoto Ryoma, wielding a sword and gun.

Combat remains fresh yet familiar considering it’s a Remake of a 2014 classic. Switching between three fighting styles turns Ryoma into a one-man army. It is loosely based on his life, but developer RGG took a few liberties to fill in the gaps in his story.

<h2>Rise of Ronin </h2>

<a href="https://whatoplay.com/ps5/rise-of-the-ronin/" title="Rise of Ronin PS5 game">PS5</a>

A fitting end to this list is the PS5 exclusive Rise of Ronin.

This is the point in Japanese history when the Shogunate is at the tail end of its power. It sets the stage for the pivotal ‘Bakumatsu’ period, an end to isolationism, and the impending rise of the Meiji period.

Rise of Ronin is the latest from Team Ninja’s growing list of action RPG titles like the NiOh series and Dead or Alive.

Play as a masterless samurai caught between the ways of the past and the onslaught of ‘modern’ ways brought about by the West. This is an action-packed open-world RPG where you forge your own path amidst the many opposing factions.

The game is set in three major areas: Tokyo, Yokohama, and Kyoto. You can even soar through the skies of these three major cities using an unlockable glider. It also includes historical figures like Sakamoto Ryoma and Commodore Matthew Perry. This Perry, not Chandler Bing.

FX’s new Shogun TV series had us wanting more stories that take place during Japan’s Shogunate periods. In this list, we want to share our picks for the best games to play that will scratch that Shogun itch.
