- Decent but hackneyed hack-and-slashery, and still a way off feeling comfortable on Xbox
Jon 'Log' Blyth · Oct 21, 2010 Reviewed on X360 - Linear, simplistic gameplay with no multiplayer component limits replay value.
Cole Smith · Oct 19, 2010 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - Unlike its more interesting predecessors, Arcania: Gothic 4 is a commonplace action-RPG with boring quests, rudimentary controls, and dreary character development. All of these flaws make the game difficult to get emotionally involved in, which is the kiss of death for an epic RPG like this one that demands dozens of hours of commitment.
Brett Todd · Oct 18, 2010 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Gothic veterans may be left cold by this uncomplicated outing for the series, but for those looking for a good old-fashioned fantasy romp, Arcania has its charms. It's predictable and shallow, with horrendous voice work, but if you go in expecting no surprises, there's some incredibly addictive adventuring to be had.
Tom Senior · Oct 14, 2010 Reviewed on PCRead full review - story is distracting and disposable & kind of enjoyable but never subtle. It's not going to please hardcore D&D purists or gamers looking for the next Elder Scrolls, but as a middle ground between deeper entries and linear adventures, Arcania: Gothic IV hits its stride.
Patrick Kolan · Oct 12, 2010 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Beneath Arcania's often outstanding art direction and technical achievement lies a dry spreadsheet of must-have RPG elements, none of which is sufficiently developed to compel and all of which fail to balance against one another. But its ultimate failing is that it treats you like a heel. It neither mentally nor materially rewards the player, which is absolutely fundamental to an enjoyable RPG.
