News had come out months ago that Daedalic Entertainment was working on a Lord of the Rings game, but rather than controlling rangers or heroes of Middle-Earth, you’ll be playing as the fantasy world equivalent of a meth addict, Gollum. Just in, we have the first teaser for the game, and it gives us a new take on JRR Tolkien’s fantasy epic, Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

Check it out:

Talking to IGN, lead game designer Martin Wilkes confirmed that this will be an action-platformer. He says:

“If you want a reference you might think of it as similar to Prince Of Persia. It is mostly a non-combat game, but Gollum will be able to stealthily take out enemies. However, this will not be easy and always come with big risks. We want players to carefully weigh these encounters. After all, Gollum’s strengths lie in cunning not combat.”

Since you won’t be able to use weapons, the game allows players the option to meddle with the environment and distract enemies with throwables and other special abilities.

What’s more, players will actually be able to switch between the personas of Smeagol and Gollum and this will affect the gameplay and how the story progresses.

Still from Lord of the Rings: Gollum

There is also a promise of meeting some familiar faces from Lord of the Rings, but I would be fine if they didn’t rely too much on the fanservice. I just want to see this new take on Tolkien’s world and see how they can make this fantasy villain somewhat like a hero.

No release date has been set for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, but it is expected to come out in 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Switch.
