Sony State of Play May 2024: 14 Games Featured

Blew your budget on a PS5? To get your collection started, here are our picks for the best PS5 games that won’t break the bank.

Among Us

$4.99

We start this list with Among Us. Who hasn’t heard of this game of manipulation and subterfuge, or killing your friends and hoping you get away with it. While it’s a fun addition to the PS5, it does come with some drawbacks. For one, it doesn’t have voice chat so you’ll need to find your own workaround. And, despite the price tag, it’s only really cheap if you already have a PlayStation Plus subscription.

Poppy Playtime: Chapter 1

$4.99

Next up is an analog of the Freddy animatronics series. Poppy’s Playtime gives abandoned toys the chance to get back at their makers. Unfortunately in this case that means you. Stay alive by solving puzzles around the abandoned factory and whatever you do, don’t get caught!

We Were Here Expeditions: The FriendShip

$3.99

Enough of the spooks, here’s a game where you won’t have to feel alone. Like Overcooked and It Takes Two, We Were Here Expeditions is co-op game. But unlike other couch co-op games, you have to play together online. Leaving you to communicate solely through a pair of walkie-talkies and rock, paper, scissor games. Together you can explore this nautical theme park with its fair share of puzzles and peril.

Brotato

$4.99

Speaking of peril, Brotato has plenty. While Vampire Survivors is taking its time coming to PlayStation, this chaotic arena shooter is kicking it on the consoles. Guide this small potato, from being a small fry gunner, to a hotshot, guns-blazing killing machine. With so many unique builds to try, there’s every reason to keep coming back for more.

Garden Patrol

$2.99

Not exactly the best use of your PS5’s new-gen visuals, let’s be honest. It’s basically the garden equivalent of whack-a-mole. The more critters you take down and the better your plants grow, the higher your points. There are a few trophies on the line, too, if you’re up to it.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (PS1 Emulation)

$2.49

Coming at just slightly cheaper than the last game is this re-release of a PS1 classic. While Oddworld Abe’s comeback Remake in 2014 is racking up the ratings, you can still get the original experience for a bargain price. The gameplay probably won’t be as smooth as you remember it, but it is just as funny.

Ratyrinth

$4.99

A great example of a modern retro game done well. Ratyrinth takes the two-tone 8-bit style and pairs it with precise controls and superb platforming challenges. In your quest to find your family, every level is a rat race. Face off with new enemies and take on the surprising new challenges ahead.

Food Truck Tycoon

$4.99

From the same publisher that brought us Sushi Time!. Food Truck Tycoon brings new culinary adventures. Starting from humble hotdogs and sodas, things will get a whole lot messier once you get to the french fries, salads, corndogs…and everything in between. Try managing all that on your DualSense controller.

Titan Chaser

$4.99

And if you feel like going for a drive, there’s Titan Chasers. It’s a driving simulator where you go marauding around a foggy open world in search of Titans. The only thing is, your only line of defense is to drive away the majestic beasts with light. It has a wonderful atmosphere of dread that SCP fans would love.

Kitten Island

$4.99

Back to the platformers, this one goes out to all the cat lovers. The feline equivalent to Mario’s adventures, Kitten Island takes you through a world of different environments. To collect coins and squish enemies with your mighty paws. One cute meow at a time.

Dungeon Party

$3.99

Our second racing game in this list doesn’t need any fancy F1 tracks. Instead, it dares you to brave the craggy paths of a dungeon in monster trucks and more. The fun thing is, you can finally get that competitive online experience.

Chess Royal

$2.99

Did anybody say competitive? Because is there anything more competitive than a smart round of chess? Chess Royale is simple straightforward chess that runs you against an AI that won’t pull their punches. On top of that, it also has daily puzzles and over 500 levels of a Puzzle Tower to climb. And if you ever get bored of losing, you can always bring a friend in for a local match.

Minigolf Adventure

$4.99

If a relaxing round of minigolf is more your style, this game’s wild and magical terrains might do the trick. Up to four players can compete in its over 100 holes of stunning scenery. For all its visuals and multiplayer fun, it can be a little buggy. Your mileage may vary.

Evil Diary

$4.99

Our next game ramps up the action. In this grim post-apocalyptic world, Evil Diary is a thrilling city escape where hordes of monsters stand in the way of your freedom. Pistol in hand, this is your chance to roleplay a gun-toting action hero. Master all 32 levels and earn a few skins on the way.

Divination

$4.99

In this futuristic adventure game, fortune can only do so much. As a diviner, you read the runes that hold the futures of four different clients. Will your predictions bring peace or chaos? Its a short adventure with multiple endings you can explore in one sitting.

Formula Bit Racing DX

$4.99

Racing games are in this price range. Defunct Games’ formula racer somehow manages with its simple arcade gameplay and retro visuals. Unlike most racers, you won’t be getting the multiplayer experience. But if you’re on the market for a cheap nostalgia racer, this one’s for you.

Mr. Brocco & Co.

$4.99

Junk foods are taking over the land and it’s up to Mr. Brocco or Mr. Asparagus to save the day. It isn’t much, but it is an honest shot at advocating for a balanced diet. Its simple 2D platforming and straightforward story make for a great educational adventure for kids.

Hot Tentacles Shooter

$2.99

Just from the “Hot Tentacles” in its name, you can tell this isn’t gonna be for kids. This game is rated M for Mature. If you’re 17 and up and don’t mind some artful pixel nudity in your shooters, you might actually like this one.

Skatemasta Tcheco

$4.99

Our last game is a taste of the old classics, this skateboard platformer is a complete nostalgia trip. Its odd visuals and 2D sidescrolling gameplay feel straight out of the Famicom days. On your trusty skateboard, make it through the levels by dashing through and squishing your opponents. With its fast-paced levels and cool bosses, it’s not as easy as you’d think.

19 Best PS5 Games Under $5

Video script

20.	Legend of Mushroom

Looks can be deceiving. For a simple mushroom adventure, this can be incredibly addictive. In the end, this is all about the items which you get by rubbing a magic lamp. Choose well and your shrom will grow into the legend it was meant to be. For all your time investment, you could be suckered into spending if you’re not careful.

19.	Love and Deepspace

If you loved Tears of Themis, you’ll love this exquisite Otome game with bachelors steeped in 3D realism you can almost touch. While love is a battlefield, here the adage takes a literal turn, with real-time combat as a DeepSpace Hunter. It’s essentially still a gacha game and all you do is in the spirit of earning new romantic cutscenes, if you’re lucky.

18.	Invincible: Guarding the Globe

For fans of Invincible, see the comic characters back in action and battling up close. It’s a basic auto battler, with a slight tactical spin. You can still breeze through battles, but watching heroes perform ultimates is pretty cool. To get your favorite characters, play the game of luck with their gacha chests.

17.	Pixel Heroes: Tales of Emond

Only available in a few regions, this is an idle game in the traditional pixel JRPG style. Tales of Emond is a visual treat, whisking you away to the Continent in your battle against a demon king. You won’t have much control over your heroes. But you can upgrade their skills so they can survive the adventure ahead.

16.	Magic Chronicle: Isekai RPG

Another JRPG-like auto battler. Magic Chronicle has sleek and smoothly-animated characters. Go on automated adventures with heroes you can level up, using whatever resources you can muster. Manage them well so you don’t have to turn to its many microtransactions.

15.	Soul Strike - Idle Action RPG

Com2us’ Idle Action RPG lets you start square in the middle of the action. The battles, fought in a large 3D space with monsters coming at you from everywhere--just like Vampire Survivors. But your battle is upgrading. From skills to classes and soul stones. It’s that same addictive loop, with a freemium finish. Tread lightly.

14.	NASCAR Manager

An officially licensed NASCAR game. Take your drivers to the top ranks by managing pit stops and race aggression. Outside the race, you’ll have to rely on the lootbox economy for new drops on equipment, drivers, and boosters. They pulled out all the stops for this game, with realistic racing graphics and licensed tracks and drivers!

13.	Lumbercat : Idle Tycoon

From the high-octane races to the lost art of lumbering. Explore the lumbering process from start to finish, with your army of cat workers assisting you every step of the way. It’s a slow process at first, as you work for your first billions. Your cats will still be grinding while you’re away, but you can pay cash for gems and tickets to speed things up.

12.	Arcane Saga - Turn Based RPG

Probably the closest you’ll get to a classic turn-based RPG. Each hero brings their own flavor to the battle, but it’s your tactical wits that will bring them to victory. While that’s all well and good, its reliance on heroes and equipment might mean you’ll hit a paywall faster than you’d hope.

11.	ASTRA: Knights of Veda

Fans of Vanillaware’s RPGs will love ASTRA’s visuals and gameplay. Seemingly a cross-between Dragon’s Crown and Odin Sphere, you get an all-out experience of visuals, story, and exciting combat. It’s only fair that it needs a whopping 7 gigabytes from your smartphone. Taking after Genshin’s weapons and characters gacha, the 5-star droprates manage to be stingier than Hoyo’s.

10.	Boori's Spooky Tales: Idle RPG

Following the Soul Knight formula, go on a ghostbusting adventure as a crow fighting to return to his human body. With dungeons and new skills and summons, it’s loaded with content with an interesting story to boot.

9.	Eggy Party

This game has everything you love about Fall Guys. Vibrant menus, funky characters, and wackier and wackier game modes. The competition is fiercer than ever, with ultimates to bring down your rivals. With over 30 eggs to beat, it’s the survival of the fittest, round egg.

8.	The Legend of Tartar

Legend of Tartar hooks you from your first auto-battle. With its fast-paced and addictive gameplay loop, reinforced by an adorable hero you can’t help but root for. With generous rewards and optional ads, there’s everything to play for. Progress will get slower the higher you go and you might be forced to check their paywalled resources to level up.

5.	NU: Carnival - Bliss

Even if this is game is the watered-down, Play Store approved-version, it’s still oozing with the sexiness of the original adult version. Sure, it only has the battles, the story, and the…sultry interactions…but we still recommend it for mature audiences only.

3.	CookieRun: Witch’s Castle

CookieRun’s gingerbread man finds himself on a new adventure. This time, to explore the Witch’s Castle. But to do so, he’ll need Stars, earned from each solved puzzle. It’s a pleasant ad-less blockbuster adventure…as long as you don’t get too stuck. Else, you’ll need powerups and hearts which you can earn…or pay for! You can also get a Season Pass for a boost in rewards!

2.	AFK Journey

AFK journey knows how to keep you hooked. The visuals are gorgeous, the main story is voice-acted, with a combat similar to Invincible’s. Like most free games, you’ll need to work hard to get heroes. Sure, there’s also the gacha option: coughing up real cash for chests and invites. But, with AFK journey’s continuous updates, the scenic route isn’t all bad.

This is no April Fool’s!

On Steam today, Developer Landfall is giving away their 'co-operative horror' game, Content Warning. For the 24 hours after its launch on April 2, 9AM PT, the game will be available for absolutely free.

This 24 Hour Offer is courtesy of this year’s ‘Landfall Day’. It's a special celebration by the developer that falls on April 1 every year.

“We do this as a special treat to our community so that as many people as possible will have the chance to play the game,” Landfall said on Steam.

In Content Warning, players go behind the camera to film the next spooky viral hit.

It’s an online co-op game where up to four players enter the Old World at the same time. Each one will be competing for SpookTube views by filming the most number of scary stuff the Old World has to offer. Players have up to three in-game days to film.

Everything players do is at the service of Ad Revenue. The more videos they upload, the more profit they earn. Whatever they earn can be used to buy new equipment that will better their chances at SpookTube fame.

As much as its focus is on horror, Content Warning, much like other Landfall games, can be a hilarious experience. Players get to customize their Old World suits with ASCII faces and act as silly as they want to for their SpookTube videos.

Landfall is also the developer behind Totally Accurate Battle Simulator and Stick Fight: The Game.

After the free period, Content Warning will cost $7.99.

17. WRATH: Aeon of Ruin

TBA - FPS

If you miss playing FPS games from the 90s, there’s no better way than getting it at the source. Developers of classic shooters like Doom and Quake came together to bring the retro style to the new age.

With its pixel art style and first-person perspective, the game is a certified nostalgia trip that will bring you back to that first time you played an FPS game.

Wrath isn’t child’s play though. Its open-level design leaves you vulnerable in 15 different maps with 3 Guardians of the Old World to take down once and for all.

Since its full release, developer KillPixel has unfortunately decided to remove multiplayer entirely. Still, as a strictly single-player game, Wrath’s hardcore gameplay is worth the hours of investment

16. Pacific Drive

Feb 22 - Adventure

In a newer realm of First Person gameplay, Pacific Drive challenges you to survive a Pacific Northwest road trip with a nuclear twist. Cut down to its essence, this is an adventure game with roguelike elements. Your old station wagon is your lifeline and your garage is your base of operations. Head out into the Olympic Exclusion Zone, investigate the weird phenomena, and…make sure you bring back enough materials to make your future rides smoother.

Every run is a different beast, with weirder and weirder anomalies as you uncover the secret of the exclusion zones. The rides are long and the stakes are always high.

15. Helldivers 2

Feb 8 - Shooter

In Helldivers, true democracy is a crusade against bug-dom. Arrowhead continues the bullet diplomacy in this sequel to their satirical shooter.

Dive into the battlefield in teams of four and work together to bring “peace” by raining fire on every alien inhabitant. It’s simple: step up to the plate, or friendly fire will get you squashed along with them.

Along with frantic team fights and top-notch gameplay, Helldivers is also noted for its balance. While it has microtransactions, it doesn’t feel unfair.

If you can stomach the occasional server issue, Helldivers 2 is a hell of a lot of fun.

14. Tekken 8

Jan 26 - Fighting

Tekken put on a fresh face in this latest installment, with a redesigned roster and a new battle system. The Heat system soups up the action, setting the stage for aggressive plays and exciting comebacks. The training tools definitely help too, leveling the playing field for newcomers and giving veterans a place to sharpen their skills.

The latest updates have already brought new features and Tekken Shop content. And there may be even more to come.

13. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Feb 13 - RPG

It’s 1695 in New Eden and you’re a couple of Banishers tasked with lifting curses that afflict the whole town, including your beloved. Everyone has a rich story to tell, but your choice ultimate decides their fate.

Choices form the core of the DONTNOD game experience and this new action RPG only raises the stakes. It’s technically more impressive, in combat and visual presentation. Plus, the emotional story deepens your investment and makes the necessary decisions even more difficult.

12. Sons of the Forest

Feb 22 - Adventure

The sequel to The Forest brings you back into the open cannibal woods. This time, in search of a billionaire’s daughter in a map much larger and more impressive than the last.

Despite the gorgeous presentation, it’s no less horrific and it adds new challenges to hinder your survival. Each season is a host of tiny roadblocks that, with their passing, might even render your hard work useless. Thankfully, you’ll have company: in friends or AI companions.

The full release last February brought a laundry list of improvements, and it’s only getting better from here.

11. Oblivion Override

Jan 25 - Platformer

In Oblivion Override, you play a combat robot who infiltrates the Dulce Base to discover the secrets of a robot civilization.

The game has smooth, responsive combat with a character that feels fully equipped from the get-go. It’s action from the first minute, and it only gets better from there. With a variety of playstyles to try out and bosses to defeat.

Sure, the localization is less than perfect, but as one reviewer puts it: ultimately, the gameplay is so good that it eclipses everything else.

10. Momodora: Moonlit Farewell

Jan 11 - Platformer

Momodora’s last chapter is a dark and delightful adventure. This curtain call brings forth all the elements we loved from the series: gorgeous art style, compelling storytelling and Metroidvania exploration.

While it brings Momodora to a fitting end--designed to be enjoyable even without playing the previous games--Moonlit Farewell is also a great starting point for newcomers to the series.

9. Dragon Quest Builders

Feb 13 - Adventure

More than half a decade since it was released on PS Vita, the original spinoff has finally arrived on PC. And, with all the DLCs and a few more bells and whistles, it looks as fresh as ever.

With its ultrawide support and higher frame rates, among other quality-of-life improvements, this port is considered by some as the superior Dragon Quest Builders on the PC.

More than building and crafting, it also carries the essence of Dragon Quest in a compelling original story. Let your creativity soar while you restore the city of Alefgard.

8. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Jan 26 - RPG

The latest Like a Dragon title takes you on a grand getaway, from Japan to Sunny Hawaii. Aside from the tropical vacation, Infinite Wealth has a wealth of upgrades. From quality of life improvements, to new mechanics. Each add to the intuitiveness and balance of the open world.

And as for new minigames, there’s food delivery, fishing, and…the biggest addition yet: a new island management game where you gather and build to restore the island to its former glory.

It’s safe to say Infinite Wealth lives up to its name.

7. The Outlast Trials

Mar 5 - Survival-Horror

After a year in Early Access, the multiplayer Outlast game is finally out. And if you think things get a little easier with friends, you’d be wrong.

As a human guinea pig in a Cold War experiment, use your night goggles and best stealth moves to maneuver around Murkoff to earn your escape. You’ll also be collecting documents and resources that help you break free from trial. With friends or without, the trials are no less terrifying.

The Outlast Trials has two events coming up soon. Plus, a full season that brings major updates like new rigs, trials, and more.

6. Granblue Fantasy: Relink

Feb 1 - JRPG

Relink is a fantasy adventure that delivers on the basic tenets of RPG: a noble quest steeped in effective combat and challenging boss fights.

As a sequel, it ups the ante on real-time action. The pace is blazing fast, and mixing and matching from its roster of 20 characters gives you so much variety. Aside from your party of four, you can even request the aid of friends in co-op multiplayer.

A few critics don’t love its almost too simplistic narrative. But if you like hack-and-slash games with some Monster Hunter flair, then you have a few thousand gamers to vouch for it.

5. Turnip Boy Robs a Bank

Jan 18 - Adventure

Turnip Boy is on another criminal rampage. After his stint committing tax evasion, this sequel sees him robbing bank in the name of roguelike adventure. The original felony might’ve been Turnip Boy’s attempt at justice, there’s no justification for his actions here. With new guns in hand, the only goal is to steal as much money as possible. The absurdity gets leveled up with all his new food-based friends

As silly as it might be, developer Snoozy Kazoo was serious abot features. This sequel is a big step up in combat and roguelite mechanics. Turnip Boy’s new hijinx may be short, but it’s jam-packed with procedurally-generated stages, weapons, and silly hats to collect.

4. High on Life

2023

Phew Phew Games showcase their style in this debut title. In Anomaly Agent, Earth’s destruction hangs in the balance and its up to Agent 70 to eliminate all anomalies.

From start to finish, the game oozes with flair. Its heavily inspired by Katana Zero and it wears it on its sleeve. The pixel graphics emphasizes the lightning fast movements, and the weapons and upgrades keep combat interesting from one stage to the next.

While it might get repetitive at later stages, its sense of humor and visuals could still keep you hooked for hours on end.

3. Persona 3 Reload

Feb 2 - JRPG

The PS2’s Persona 3 is back. Reload went far beyond a modern repaint. It’s a complete overhaul with new content, improved gameplay and full voice acting.

Persona 3’s story may be timeless, Reloaded’s new character interactions gives it added depth. New social events open doors for learning more about favorite characters and the voice cast fully brings them to life. These interactions even give way to new perks in combat.

Though a few things still feel dated, the slick UI and modernized graphics brings it up to par with the latest games…and keeps it fresh even for old fans.

2. BlazBlue Entropy Effect

Jan 31 - Action

For flashy sidescrolling action, this latest BlazBlue title can give you your fix. Entropy Effect brings the stylish combos to a cyberspace future.

It’s unlike other Blazblue titles, but it brings its roster and its fighting game feel to a new roguelite formula. The ten playable characters offer a variety of playstyles, each as satisfying as the next. It’s this variety that makes Entropy Effect so ‘addictively replayable ’

1. Balatro

Feb 20 - Card

Seeing what seems like a simple card game topping the list might be surprising. But, this is a roguelike deck-builder like never before.

A play on classic poker, every round has a target score called blinds that you have to beat with poker hands. Jokers help you fire up your hands with upgrades and card synergies that get you those high-scoring combos. That is, if you can craft the perfect deck to go against anything.

Every run is a gamble and that’s what makes Balatro’s roguelike progression so fun. Play another round, get card upgrades, and maybe this time Lady Luck will be on your side. In Balatro, you can only go All In.
