Gerda: A Flame in Winter Special Boxed Edition Set to Launch in November

A U.S. Military veteran has turned to game development not only as a post-service hobby. But also as part of his therapeutic journey.

Solo developer Darkware has launched his debut game project GunGuru. The first-person shooter game can be played for free on Itch.io.

GunGuru is set in a chaotic world where players have to face hordes of enemies.

The game features procedurally generated maps and an 'authentic arsenal of firearms'. According to Darkware, weapons in GunGuru are drawn from his firsthand experiences on the battlefield.

It also has two main gameplay modes. These are the Combat Simulator and Explore. In Combat Simulator mode, players need to kill as many enemies as possible. Doing so, they can activate healing spells to stay alive. Meanwhile, in Explore mode, players can enjoy the game’s dynamic landscapes at a more relaxed pace.

The game’s creator, Darkware, said that developing GunGuru was more than a hobby. It was a way of coping with the trauma and emotions that he faced on the battlefield.

It has been a therapeutic journey of channeling the raw emotions and experiences from my service days into a medium that offers both entertainment and a challenging endeavor for the brave at heart, he said.

Darkware also said that he wanted to create a game that would appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers. The game was also designed for players interested in military and warfare.

In addition, he wanted to share his experiences and emotions with others and to give them a glimpse into the life of a soldier.

It’s a game where every player can prove their valor, standing tall against the face of adversity, much like a true warrior, he explained.

Developers described The Lost Ashford Ring as a 'hidden object game with a twist.' Players will control a spunky detective named Tiffany Troubleseeker in her mission to find the titular Ashford Ring.

The ring, a family heirloom, is rumored to be worth millions. But it is also no ordinary ring. It has a history of disappearing and reappearing in the most unexpected places.

As the story progresses, players will soon discover that everyone in the town of Ashford has a stake in its fate.

Each discovery brings you closer to solving the enigmatic case of the missing Ashford Ring, a valuable family heirloom that has vanished under suspicious circumstances, developers said.

The Lost Ashford Ring will contain at least 50 levels. Each has its own theme and difficulty. Aside from searching for the ring itself, the game will lead players to crack codes, decipher riddles, and more.

Along the way, they can also explore the charming town of Ashford. There, they will meet a quirky cast of characters who might be hiding more secrets than the hidden objects themselves.

The game also has its original feature called “Tiffany’s Bling-o-Meter." It measures Tiffany's excitement levels as she gets closer to finding the ring, developers said.

On the other hand, CRX Entertainment said they will port The Lost Ashford Ring to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox next year.

And interested players may not have to wait long.

American video game publisher Versus Evil announced that they will release Broken Roads on November 14. The game will land on PCs as well as consoles.

Executives at Versus Evil shared their excitement about welcoming players to the game this November.

RPGs are deeply embedded into the Versus Evil DNA and Broken Roads is among the best we’ve seen, said Steve Escalante, General Manager of Versus Evil.

Broken Roads is developed by Drop Bear Bytes, an indie studio based in Australia. It is inspired by classic and modern RPGs such as Fallout, Disco Elysium, and Pillars of Eternity, according to developers. It combines not only RPG elements. But also turn-based combats, non-linear campaigns, and choice-based progress.

Broken Roads aims to give players a 'deep, moving and immersive' RPG experience, said Craig Ritchie, the game's director. Its creators also want to showcase their home country, Australia. In turn, the game will feature authentic recreation of photos and videos of the Land Down Under.

We also wanted to create a game that showcases our native Australia, so we put a lot of effort into making the world as realistic and believable as possible, Ritchie said.

In Broken Roads, players can customize their characters not with a class-based system. But with a mechanism rooted in some of mankind's most significant philosophies. These are the Humanist, Utilitarian, Machiavellian, and Nihilist.

The game will also introduce players to an 'original morality system' called the Moral Compass. This Moral Compass will influence, and will be influenced by, players' choices throughout the game.

Broken Roads was supposed to launch in 2022. Developers, however, postponed it to a later date while securing their partnership with a publisher.

1. Starfield

PC — Xbox Series X|S

Bethesda's most recent achievement: a sci-fi RPG that’s essentially 'Skyrim in Space.' Todd Howard takes space exploration to new heights. The universe is massive. With hundreds of explorable plants to fly to, and a dynamic narrative shaped by your own choices.

2. Red Dead Redemption

PS4 — Switch

This remaster of Rockstar’s first open world Wild West finds a new home in modern consoles. It’s one thing to enjoy horseback riding in the refreshed American Frontier. But if you get it on Switch and PS4, you can even get zombies with the Undead Nightmare expansion.

3. Baldur's Gate 3

PC — PS5 — Xbox Series X|S

A strong contender for Game Of The Year, Larian Studios' playground for Dungeons and Dragons is a haven of possibilities. It's not as 'open' compared to other titles, but it has enough to have you perform perception checks in every nook and cranny for something interesting. Befriend a cast of characters that will take you on a grand fantasy adventure that's worth your while. Baldur's Gate 3 is your own story to tell.

4. Atlas Fallen

PC — PS5 — Xbox Series X|S

Inspired by the old-school action of God of War and Devil May Cry. Atlas Fallen takes us to a sand-swept open world teeming with fearsome monsters. Despite its satisfying combat, it doesn't add anything new. If you love its gorgeous open world, or if you see it on sale, then you might find this a decent pickup.

5. SLUDGE LIFE 2

You might get whiplash from seeing this alongside other games in this list. SLUDGE LIFE is a hilarious first-person adventure that whisks you into a dank yet delightful world. This sequel means new places to tag and new cigarette-obsessed characters to have weird conversations with.

6. Everspace 2

PC — PS5 — Xbox Series X|S

If Starfield didn’t scratch your sci-fi itch, maybe Everspace 2 can. Jump from galaxy to galaxy and loot as much as you can from challenging dungeons. A spaceship shooter at its core, take your metallic beasts and ride it into battle against other plundering space pirates. With some RPG in the mix, you’ll have to make some interesting choices too.

7. The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

Another Game of the Year contender. You know it’s going to be a tight competition when a new Zelda game comes out. Tears Of The Kingdom expands on Breath Of The Wild's open-world scope. It’s still Hyrule, but with the Sky Islands and the Depths adding new layers of adventure. Plus, Link’s new abilities makes exploring even better.

8. Hogwarts Legacy

PC — PS5 — Xbox Series X|S — PS4 — Xbox One — Switch

A whole generation went wild for the first ever Harry Potter open-world RPG. Hogwarts Legacy allowed us to explore Hogwarts to our heart’s content: casting spells, attending classes, soaring the skies. If you’re a Harry Potter fans, this is a magical experience you won’t get enough of.

9. Dead Island 2

PC — PS5 — Xbox Series X|S — PS4 — Xbox One

Dead Island 2 deserves some credit for bringing life back to zombie shooting. Messing around with the undead is better than ever with the game’s realistic physics. That even extends to the zombie gore. Set in post-apocalyptic Hollywood, it’s like being in your own Zombieland where you can do whatever you want.

10. DREDGE

PC — PS5 — Xbox Series X|S — PS4 — Xbox One — Switch

A relaxing fishing game by day, a Lovecraftian horror at night. DREDGE’s nautical monotony offers hours of addictive fishing. The huge open waters can be tempting to wander, but the nightmarish creatures in hiding can make you think twice. Youll have to manage your ship, all while exploring the islands and staying sane.

11. Forspoken

PC — PS5

It may not be this year's best game, but Forspoken's fantasy open world sure is interesting. Talk about Being Isekai'd into a new world with nothing but a talking cufflink. Sure, that cufflink can talk your ear off while you zip and dash across the map, but the combat and exploration make it worth it.

12. Digimon World: Next Order

PC — Switch

After more than 5 years since its first release, this Digimon game finally made its way to modern consoles. This open world adventure challenges you to collect as many Digimon as you can. It’s a long adventure with over 200 to collect, feed, and battle with. Join forces and strengthen your bonds to rebuild its Digital World in Chaos.

13. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

PC — PS5 — Xbox Series X|S — PS4 — Xbox One

Cal Kestis' return turned him into a force to be reckoned with. Armed with new weapons and powers, Survivor ups the ante of Cal's relentless Jedi journey. Explore never-before-seen planets in a semi-open-world format. You're not just exploring; you're solving puzzles and retraciing your steps, like a 3D metroidvania. It's a complete step up from Fallen Order, with more heart-pounding action and interesting narrative beats!

14. Diablo IV

PC — PS5 — Xbox Series X|S — PS4 — Xbox One

Even with all the questionable patches and balance issues, Blizzard’s ARPG continues to break new ground in their latest Diablo title. IV's ambitious open world enhances the dungeon-crawling experience with a greater emphasis on exploration. Test your builds with each biome from its five major acts.

15. Black Skylands

PC — PS5 — Xbox Series X|S — PS4 — Xbox One — Switch

Fly your own airship and Explore floating islands in this epic steampunk adventure. Take to the skies and discover the treasures and secrets that this expansive open world offers. Past its main storyline, you can do whatever you want, like raiding enemy encampments or defeating hordes of powerful enemies. After all, you're the captain of the ship.

In this video, we highlight some of the biggest open world releases of the year on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and the Nintendo Switch. Some are flops, others are not.

15 New Open World Games of 2023

PLA Studios and Giant Flame gear up to unveil their World War II turn-based tactical game, The Troop. The game will exit from its early access phase this October 10, 2023.

The Troop has been in early access since 2021 and has received a wealth of player feedback. The full release will include a host of new features.

About the Game

On June 6, 1944, the Western Allies started the biggest sea invasion in history. D-Day marks the start of a relentless campaign to liberate Northwest Europe from German occupation. Over the next few months, ancient fields, farms, and villages became the setting for a legendary battle.

The Troop is a game that depicts British and Canadian forces fighting the German Heer and SS in Normandy. Players control infantry, motorized, and armored units in intense turn-based battles against challenging and unpredictable AIs.

The game embraces the rich traditions of classic tabletop war gaming in an interactive digital format. Players have finer control over units' actions. Tanks can avoid showing weak areas on unpredictable routes. Concealed artillery can keep their locations hidden. And infantry won't run away when they are close to victory. Players can take their time and any missteps are solely their responsibility.

Development of The Troop has been a real labour of love for our small and passionate team, and we are excited to finally share the full game with strategy enthusiasts. Following our extensive early access period, we are delighted to reveal that the full release of The Troop will include a host of optional rule settings including overwatch and bocage shooting as well as the highly-requested Campaign mode featuring four campaigns. - Tom Page, Studio Director, PLA Studios

Game Features:

Story Mode: Get immersed in the campaign narrative, assuming the roles of various units from both the Commonwealth and German forces as history unfolds in Normandy.

Skirmish Mode: Customize scenarios, choose factions, build forces, and set enemy parameters. Every battle promises unpredictability and endless replayability.

Campaign Mode: The full release introduces three new campaigns: 21st Panzer Division, SS Panzer Division, and 31st Tank Brigade.

The Troop will release on PC via Steam on October 10, 2023 for $39.99, £30.99, or €33.99.

PLA Studios has been designing, producing and developing games, systems and interfaces for a wide range of applications since 2011.
Giant Flame was assembled specifically to develop The Troop, which will be its first own IP project. The team is driven by a deep passion for wargaming in both digital and physical formats and a lifelong love of military history.
