  • Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition gives a cult classic RPG its time in the spotlight, and the Nintendo Switch another stellar exclusive.

  • Once the mechanics are understood, and the game really gets rolling, Xenoblade Chronicles X became on of my favorite games of 2015. The imaginative creatures, sprawling landscapes, and memorable soundtrack, breath life into the world. The combat, customization, and constant drive to see what's over that next ridge kept me coming back every single day for weeks. If you are a Wii U owner, this is absolutely a game you should own.

  • Luckily for the game combat is awesome, the story is worth sticking around the lengthy conversations for, and the world is interesting enough that sticking around for a while wouldn’t be the worst use of my time. It’s an odd approach, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a lot of fun with this game.

  • Xenoblade Chronicles X is a masterclass of design that we don’t often see in the JRPG genre, and easily stands besides the few heavyweights we’ve seen so far this generation. Once you get over the hump and understand its systems, X offers a simply huge world to seamlessly explore.

  • Xenoblade Chronicles X has its share of faults and is a vast departure from the formula that Xeno-games are known for, but it also brings an amazingly large adventure for RPG fans on the Wii U.

  • There are literally hundreds of hours of potential gameplay here, but even if you don't tackle everything, getting to know Mira is exciting, full of breathtaking surprises, and downright fun. If you find the patience to get over its learning curve, Xenoblade Chronicles X will reward that patience with a wealth of memorable experiences.

It took me 73 hours to finish the main story and there's still lots of things to do. The presentation can feel stiff and awkward at times, but the satisfying loop of combat and customization makes exploring the vast world of Mira a fun and rewarding experience.

  • I began Xenoblade Chronicles X filled with enthusiasm for its intriguing world and gorgeous visuals. But like the hackneyed songs that play ad nauseum throughout, the gameplay doesn’t have enough depth or entertainment to sustain such a prolonged experience.

  • Parts of it are so Japanese—character design, animations, anime/manga-esque plot—that it feels like it should be an Atlus or Nippon-Ichi title; but if it were that niche it would never have been able to develop the expansive environment. There's certainly nothing like it on the Wii U, or anywhere else. It's definitely worth picking up if you have the platform.
