  • There’s no denying that, yes, the obvious low budget development has left a few rough edges, and it’s not exactly a graphics showpiece, but the game has a fantastically strong heart beating beneath its sometimes-shabby exterior that makes those issues easily forgivable. Tokyo Jungle is easily one of the best games this fall season, and is going to be cropping up in gaming conversations for years to come.

  • Tokyo Jungle is utterly ridiculous but wholly unique, blending challenging gameplay with goofy trappings. Putting a track suit on a housecat to increase its attack stat is a pretty silly thing to do, but the kind of attention to detail you'll need if you want to survive in the urban chaos. The mixture of absurd and serious is addictive and surprising.

  • Tokyo Jungle is a positive throwback to the previous gaming generation when it seemed we were hearing about unique Japanese games a couple times a month. Some of us would import a seemingly mundane bus driving simulation and we’d applaud U.S. publishers for bringing over games that let us conduct symphonies and fly around as a blood-sucking mosquito. Yet novelty alone doesn’t cut it, and we’re pleased that Tokyo Jungle has the addicting gameplay to complement this rare animal takeover premise.

  • When you’re presented with a stark morality choice at the end that, no matter what you choose, ends the game on a supremely dark note, you can't help but applaud the game's sheer audacity. Tokyo Jungle is bold, well-designed, and very funny. One can’t imagine Tokyo Jungle coming from anywhere but Japan, and it’s a case where such a statement is an enormous compliment.

  • The premise of scavenging for food, marking territories, and creating offspring may sound like an odd gameplay mix, but for reasons you may not understand, you'll likely return for another round, and another, and continue so on without getting bored. There are dozens of animals to try out and level up, a deeper than expected strategy to maximize your end score, and a ton of replay value for only fifteen bucks.

Despite all of its flaws, I'd still consider Tokyo Jungle a decent arcade title. You definitely have to learn from your experiences while playing, and if you're a completionist, unlocking all the animals and story mode archives can be a challenging yet rewarding enterprise. I wouldn't say that Tokyo Jungle is a must play title by any means, but for just $15 I'd say it's almost worth it just to play one of the strangest games the PSN has to offer.

  • The odd premise of Tokyo Jungle is only augmented by the adrenaline rush of survival and the peculiarity of its systems and rules. It can certainly get repetitive and unlocking everything is a bear, but its random nature can often have you shouting at the screen in moments of panic and surprise.

  • You've never played a game with a concept quite like that of Tokyo Jungle. But underneath the amusing exterior, this is just a game with shoddy stealth mechanics and gameplay systems that keep you doing the same simple things over and over again. It's almost hard to believe, but Tokyo Jungle makes experiencing the rich circle of life on the streets of Shibuya a drag.

  • Gloomy near-future setting aside, Tokyo Jungle isn't terribly concerned with telling an epic tale of the destruction of mankind. It centers on the narratives that emerge from nature's struggle for food, for safety, for family. Through its constantly shifting challenges, Tokyo Jungle shepherds you to the best of its content without forcing your way.

  • All in all, Tokyo Jungle is a refreshing unique game that I’m glad I got to experience. However, I think that with a bit more polish and a revised unlock structure could allow the game to reach the potential that there is here. It wouldn’t hurt to add some variety to the challenges and levels and maybe even put any potential sequel on a certain portable that is hungry for new games.
