- The Persistence cleverly blends Dead Space-esque outer-space sci-fi scares with the addictive arcade loop of rogue-lites like Rogue Legacy, resulting in a PlayStation VR campaign that’s both gut-wrenching and weirdly replayable. It won’t take you a million lightyears to complete the likeable campaign, but a hardcore mode awaits when you’ve finished, and clever co-op functionality adds a little longevity to the experience as well. With a compelling gameplay format as well as some great gadgetry, this is one survival mission we thoroughly enjoyed.
Sammy Barker · Oct 28, 2021 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Despite being a VR port, The Persistence still stands its ground with great controls and delivers a creepy horror roguelike experience, set on a futuristic spaceship with many creepy and strong enemies in randomly generated areas that have surprises ready around each corner. The game plays very well, but requires a lot of perseverance to go through many deaths to learn from your mistakes and defeat the challenges you earlier couldn’t beat. The Persistence is nothing more than a great horror roguelike that will keep on challenging you to move after each death.
Nickskuh · Jul 08, 2020 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - The Persistence has turned out to be an excellent blend of genres that I haven't experienced before. There are some terrifying moments and the monsters themselves can be somewhat creepy, but you are given enough weapon choice to get the job done. With the map layout changing after every death, and the number of upgrades to chase after there is tons of replay value as well.
Anthony Maynard · Jun 12, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The Persistence draws on classic elements of both horror and sci-fi to create a creepy roguelike set in the furthest reaches of space. It is excellently designed, taking familiar concepts and twisting it uniquely into the format of the game.
Kirstie Summers · Jun 01, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The Switch version of The Persistence managed to exceed my expectations in every single way. Not only it’s a good proof that you can also port former VR games to a non-VR environment, but it’s also a fun horror-themed roguelike with great visuals and environmental design running pretty well on such underpowered hardware.
Kyle Nicol · May 24, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The Persistence still feels like it would be best played in VR, but this is still a good game without it. I wish the last level was less restrictive and didn’t require so much farming, but I enjoyed my time with the game overall. I did encounter one technical error – the game locked me in a room and refused to spawn the keycard I needed to leave it, requiring me to restart an entire deck – but The Persistence’s translation from VR is largely a success.
Will Borger · May 23, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The graphics will seem a bit dated in parts but remember this is a product of the V.R. as you will not get games to have state of the art graphics in this environment. What the game does offer is some tense gameplay and plenty of action in setting that should keep fans of the genre happy if they are willing to temper their expectations.
gareth · May 22, 2020 Reviewed onRead full review - Here is where I’ll show my VR snobbery and say that while the graphical fidelity of this version of the game is superior to the PSVR version, the 2D version of the game cannot capture the sense of dread and isolation that the PSVR version has. Still, this version of the game does have enough depth, strategy, and replayability to make it a solid, worthwhile addition to your game library. The characters are engaging and The Persistence provides the proper mood and incentives that make you want to succeed.
Lou Sytsma · May 22, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The Persistence is a unique and unsettling sci-fi horror roguelite that does an excellent job of transferring its tense atmosphere and absorbing gameplay loops from its original VR form to the Nintendo Switch. There are tons of weapons and toys to tool around with as you run the gauntlet, the permanent aspects of the gameplay are refreshingly generous and survival mode and New Game+ provide a properly stiff challenge for those who prefer their roguelites to be tough as nails.
PJ O'Reilly · May 21, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I’m fairly open that horror games are sort of a new passion of mine and I really liked the atmosphere in this game and a big part of that is how good the enemy AI is. There is a lot to like in this game as long as randomized gameplay (rogue light elements) are not a turn off. The Persistence is definitely one of the best rogue light experiences I have played in quite some time and I will likely go back and try the VR origins of this title.
