- I feel confident in saying that Subject 13 is adequate and passable to those who enjoy the more open and complicated variety of adventure games, especially for the asking price. For me, the back half’s frustration far outweighed all the other things that it had going for it. Adventure games of this kind – of any production value – just don’t seem to be my thing.
Wyatt Daniels · Feb 23, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Subject 13 just left me with an overall been there, done that feeling. Nothing screamed original to me outside the first hour or so. Then it became frustrating with puzzles along with player interaction. The interface to the puzzles was easy to use, yet the navigating environment with the character felt rough, even at times getting stuck on an edge of an environment. Subject 13 isn’t a horrible game or experience, it’s was just an extremely tepid one for me. Hard to recommend to anyone except those craving for more entries in the genre when most other options are exhausted.
Justin Celani · Jan 10, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Puzzles can seem logical but may be missing the simplest thing to actually solve and it’s easy to spend much more time than should be necessary to solve a part of the puzzle (I’m looking at you “Book of 100”). For gamers who love that satisfying sense of accomplishment when completing challenges of the mind, this would be a good title to pick up but for someone who wants a game to jump into from time to time this is going to get frustrating quickly.
Alexander Thomas · Jan 05, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Subject 13 is a nice-looking game. It has some great songs. The story is serviceable but forgettable in light of the way the player experiences it. Adventure game fans will have to hold out a little longer for a real quality kickstarted release in the genre.
Bryan Cebulski · Aug 17, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - That being said, Subject 13 as a whole is thoughtfully challenging. I can see it working really well for casual and hardcore puzzle fans alike as it intermingles timeless puzzles with original concepts. Despite the storyline having some slightly cheesy and generic moments, it was intriguing enough to keep me interested and engaged. Although it doesn’t hold a candle to its predecessors in the genre, it’s definitely worth a play if you’re a fan of exploration puzzlers.
Caitlin Cooke · Jun 29, 2015 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Subject 13 overall fails to live up to the high expectations set during its Kickstarter drive. While aspects such as tired graphics and poor controls certainly don’t help matters, at least these problems could have been overlooked if the spirit of adventure and mystery expected had been there, especially given the pedigree of talent involved. But despite some inventive puzzles and interesting ideas, Subject 13 fails to deliver, leaving players to flashback to a time when Cuisset was on top of his game.
Leigh Forgie · Jan 14, 2017 Reviewed on PS4 - After all, here is a point and click adventure that clearly speaks to and is inspired by the design sensibilities of yesteryear, but which ultimately fails to wrap a compelling, long-lasting experience around that core. The narrative is interesting, the puzzles are fun to tackle, if a little too simple and yet, if there was just a lot more content and if everything was a little more polished, we would be looking at a great game heavy with recommendation, rather than a good one laden with caveats.
