  • It's one thing for a console RTS to be unwieldy and limited when compared to what's on PC (although this excuse runs thin when you look at Halo Wars), but Stormrise doesn't suffer simply because it's on a console. In trying to introduce a new, supposedly user-friendly unit selection system, developer The Creative Assembly instead destroys almost all of the game's playability.

It's a shame that Stormrise had to suffer under so many issues, including inefficient group control and poor unit AI. The Whip Select system was a good idea and the basic premise behind Stormrise's gameplay is appetizing, but the entire project just doesn't come together properly.

  • Stormrise is heavy on innovation but weak on execution. An incredibly complex strategy game that will leave enthusiasts rabid over its intricate nature and everybody else at the bottom of a very steep hill named "Mount Learning Curve".

  • And how the broken checkpoints and single save slot mean potentially saving at an inopportune time, forcing you to restart a mission from the beginning. And the way the action continues after you save the game, but doesn't let you control anything for several precious seconds. Suffice it to say, Stormrise is a broken debacle that is in no way deserving of either your time or your money.

  • While Stormrise was a noble effort by The Creative Assembly to develop an RTS from the ground up with an original control scheme, in the end it falls flat on its face. In fact, the controls prove to be the game's worst aspect, and the single-player campaign is additionally marred by a pedestrian storyline.

  • Once in a while, however, it does all come together. There were brief spells where I was navigating tight urban corridors, ducking into cover or holing up in buildings, switching back to resource nodes or aerial units to churn out troops or check enemy movements, when I could see the logic behind the decisions here.

  • Looks like an explosion in a mudbath. Controls are too fiddly. Single-player isn't much fun

  • Broken A.I., an unrefined control scheme and shoddy presentation are partly to blame, but also the decision to go 3D and move close-in on the action has actually had the reverse affect; rather than make you feel involved in the action, it actually makes you feel detached from the battlefield because it’s difficult to see exactly what’s going on.

About the game

Experience the heat of the battlefield by leading your troops from the front line, instead of the traditional way of controlling the units from a detached view point. Stormrise also allows units to be commanded in the air, across rooftops, on the earth’s surface and even underground, this unique idea of "verticality" introduces multiple layers of gameplay that must be mastered for strategic advantage. The experience is heightened by a simple yet effective control system tailored specifically for consoles, which allows easy unit selection, rapid navigation and precise deployment.
