  • I found myself getting bored with it only a few hours in. A game like this seems best to play in many shorter bursts. Still, its charm is undeniable and even for a game that’s ever existence seems like an afterthought, Star Fox Guard offers something new for fans of the series (or just the characters). And like I said…it was FREE!

  • Star Fox Guard isn't very good and I'm sad that I have to say that. I can see that they really tried at first, someone had a cool idea and I bet they were excited when they wanted to put a Star Fox theme on it. However, it lacks the basics of its genre and it doesn't make up for it, each round lacks tension for a good half of the game, and the progression system is worthless. I just did not have fun with Star Fox Guard. If you're really interested, you should get it with Star Fox Zero since it comes with it for free, but I can't recommend this as a stand-alone title.

  • Star Fox Guard is akin to a free dessert on top of the tasty main course. It comes as a nice bonus that compliments the main game well (since Guard could easily take place during or after Zero) but it’s completely optional. With its simple yet addictive and well conceived tower defense gameplay, not giving the title at least taste means you’re missing out on some great fun.

  • It?s a shallow cobbling together of tower defense parts that relies too much on the Wii U GamePad, one that doesn?t do anything interesting beyond Squad Mode. If you should tire of Star Fox Zero at some point, I could see you devoting a couple hours to it just because it was there if you get the physical version. On the other hand, if you?re going the digital route with Zero, there?s little reason for you to chip in and pick up Guard along with it.

Star Fox Guard is a fun action-tower defense game about managing different perspectives to put out fires as you use your resources to grow an awesome arsenal of robot-busting turrets. Its graphics are plain considering Nintendo’s artistic pedigree, but it’s still an elegant little game that can get a whole room of friends working together.

  • Ultimately, Star Fox Guard's relationship to the adventures of Fox McCloud is skin deep. As spin-offs go, it's not a compelling addition to the series, so much as it is a substantially unconnected, but inventive take on the tower defense genre that is lucky to be riding on the coattails of an established franchise.

  • However Star Fox Guard is also being sold as a separate game digitally via the eShop. Here is where it’s a little harder to justify. As a party game it’s a great experience to have with your friends, and one that can only be accomplished on Wii U. As a single player offering it may not keep you entertained.

  • Star Fox: Guard is a fine diversion, but I couldn’t imagine wanting to play it for more than a couple of hours. Again, that’s why it’s a great bonus for getting Star Fox Zero. It’s like a free game, and not an awful one. But when you judge on its own, it’s novelty quickly becomes tedious.

  • Star Fox Guard is a simple concept done very well. It's a new takes on the tower defense genre that really adds a whole lot to the experience. And in contrast to its big brother, it uses the Wii U Gamepad very effectively. However, while there is a lot of content thanks to the massive amount of levels and challenges, the core gameplay never strays too far from the base experience.

  • What we see is a terrifying game wrapped in a charming coating with lots to do if you're so inclined. The main game is satisfying on its own, and throw in the excellent My Squad online mode and you've got yourself a party. Player beware; you're in for a scare.
