- Most of us don’t have an elaborate story other than being a kid with a skateboard and a curb to learn tricks off of. Skater XL provides exactly that, zero frills, no plot, barely a tutorial, and unimpressive graphics. It’s more of a dream machine for those kids in empty parking lots, but it’s not really a video game. Would I recommend Skater XL to most folks? Probably not, just like I wouldn’t recommend my own mother to step on a skateboard. As a sandbox for skaters to hone their skills, however, it’s second to none, with some Switch concessions, of course.
Alex Orona · Dec 13, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Skater XL is a game full of good intentions, but not only is it completely devoid of content, but it’s also devoid of a community that was supposed to come up with new levels and assets for other players to enjoy. Sadly, I see no reason for people to give this game a shot nowadays.
Leo Faria · Jan 15, 2021 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - In sum, Skater XL tries to fill a void in the world of skateboarding video games by offering a valiant blend of the familiar and innovative. The music and aesthetic are warm and welcoming to build a carefree experience for the player. The settings are bright, crisp, and appealing, but the controls and game layout that Easy Day Studios decided to embrace seems misguided.
Joseph Doyle · Sep 14, 2020 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Just like learning to skateboard in real life, it’s going to take a lot of time and patience to really get the game down. I nearly walked away from the game when it was in early release, but I am so glad that I did not. It’s now one of the games I turn on daily, even if only for 15 minutes, just to practice my tricks.
Joseph Saulnier · Aug 27, 2020 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - Skater XL is, simply put, an unfinished product. It's a Skateboarding Simulation Game without the game. A barebones five developer-created maps and three user-created maps have no path, purpose or direction with just a handful of 'challenges' that are identical to tutorials. The skateboarding itself is great, the tricks satisfying to perform and a joy to pull off, particularly due to the control scheme.
Chris Wray · Aug 09, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Once you overcome Skater XL’s learning curve there’s some fun board-based entertainment to be had here. But this is a lightweight package with subpar presentation, and unless you’re so deep into skater culture that you absolutely need a simulation for your PS4, we’d recommend either waiting for this to be updated – or pre-ordering Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 instead.
Sammy Barker · Aug 07, 2020 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Skater XL is a strong proof of concept but it’s currently incomplete. It has successfully created a physics-based control system that is both complex and rewarding. This will appeal to skaters as it’s the closest that video games have got to simulating the sport, however, Easy Days Studios has failed to gamify the experience.
Jaz Sagoo · Aug 05, 2020 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - It's a slog once you've mastered these tricks and there's nothing left to do. It's even worse if you don't have the patience to learn, because at that point, there's literally nothing this game has to offer you. And given that the PS4 version of the game had performance hitches at various points, I can envision people's patience wearing thin quickly. Easy Day makes a valiant effort with Skater XL, but this game isn't a pro skater just yet.
Ozzie Mejia · Aug 04, 2020 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - If you’re really missing the Skate franchise, I do recommend checking out Skater XL. With the possibility of more community created levels and hopefully some of the more glaring bugs getting patched out, hardcore fans will have tons of fun with the creativity and flexibility Skater XL offers. You’ll just likely be frustrated frequently with some of the issues in between those moments of creativity.
Bob Fekete · Aug 04, 2020 Reviewed onRead full review - Skater XL is a sandbox, yes, but it's a sandbox without toys. Or other people to play with. And that's not really a sandbox at all — it's a desert. If I wanted to make a fool out of myself skating awkwardly and injuring myself in hilarious ways in a barren, depressing landscape devoid of people, I'd just grab my own board and head outside.
