- While the career mode of Skate 2 lacks focus, the open-ended nature of it works out pretty well, and the additional online components really add a lot to the overall experience, as well. Some players may find the difficulty or the open progression a bit overwhelming at times, but the advances in the trick system and the new ways to play make Skate 2 a great sequel that further capitalizes on the concepts introduced in the original.
Jeff Gerstmann · Jan 26, 2009 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Skate 2 is going to require a serious investment of time on your part if you want to get into it. I'll be honest with that. But once you do, the game provides a rather intuitive and fun experience that's worth the work you put into it. The camera is one of the most immediate problems that needs to be fixed, but Black Box has done a good job with the title, and if they can keep making substantial improvements with each title in the series, then they'll be the undisputed frontrunners for the new generation of skating titles.
8BitBrian · Jan 26, 2009 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - It’s when you attempt to actually complete the game’s career mode that things start to bog down as you’re forced to endure the finicky, imprecise trick controls, awkward on-foot movement, repetitive mission objectives, and god awful racing. But when you’re on-board, cruising down the sidewalk looking for an edge to grind or slide it really comes into its own. If you’re a goal-oriented player then rent first, but if you’re open to gleaning fun without any set of rules, pick up Skate 2 and start ripping.
Game Trailers · Jan 25, 2009 Reviewed on PS3 - There's room for improvement by Skate is still the best skateboarding series in the business
Andy Robinson · Jan 23, 2009 Reviewed on X360 - For hardcore Skate players the new moves, altered city and new features (getting off your board, moving objects) will make Skate 2 essential, but at the same time perhaps not as big a leap over the original as they'd have liked. For everyone else, if you've got time to kill and fancy yourself as the next Tony Hawk, Skate 2 is well worth it. It's hard and often punishing to the point of frustration, but the rewards make up for all the effort.
Tom Orry · Jan 23, 2009 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - While not without its faults, Skate 2 is one of the most realistic, challenging and fulfilling skateboarding games around
OXM Staff · Jan 23, 2009 Reviewed on X360 - The execution is still sharp, but the game as a whole feels slightly pointless
Edge Staff · Jan 22, 2009 Reviewed on PS3, X360 - Skate 2 is a great game, and, in fact, it is the best skating game to date, so I recommend it to everyone. This game is very successful because it makes players want to go skate. I think the game will click with current skaters even more. It does have some problems, but besides the running controls and the steep learning curve, there is not a better skating game out there. So go out, buy it, play it, and enjoy another great game from Black Box.
Youcef Baouchi · Jan 21, 2009 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - It’s unfortunate that things get dragged down by the occasionally frustrating and buggy challenges; that walking on foot isn’t handled better; and that the game’s physics and artificial intelligence aren’t consistent and sometimes get in the way of the gameplay; because Skate 2 has so much to offer. Oh, and the bone-breaking bails that would kill you in real life are just another way to earn money here, so Skate 2 is not only a fun alternative to taking to the streets, it's a safe one.
Justin Calvert · Jan 20, 2009 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - It's a really fun game that allows you to play it the way you want with a control scheme that is second-to-none at the moment. However, it's far from perfect. The story presentation has issues, the on-foot controls suck and it can feel a little too similar to the first game on the whole. Again though, for all its issues, Skate 2 is still a hell of a lot of fun and anyone into skateboarding titles should look no further for the best thing on the market right now.
