  • There are a lot of missed opportunities here, as strategic troop planning could have added a lot of depth to the title. Sadly though, you can do pretty well in the game by simply running around and mashing the attack button at anything that moves. That is after all what the franchise is best known for, and in this case, that is probably not a good thing.

  • There’s a fun game lurking underneath the surface here, but lazy voiceover decisions, overly-dry, didactic lectures between missions, and wall-punchingly frustrating ally AI keep the bright qualities of the game from shining through. Fans of this brawler franchise might find some fun here, but everyone else should stay clear.

  • Only the most dedicated of Warriors fans will find the experience compelling enough to keep playing, and even then, there are better portable Warriors games to play. I can't say I dislike the title, because it's a decent enough waste of time. However, it feels like it did enough to get a passing grade, without going the distance and achieving something more substantial.

  • Enemies themselves spend a lot of time circle strafing your character, before taking a few swings at the wind, and then finally moving in to do real damage. There is always plenty of action happening during a Samurai Warriors game, but it feels very tiring these days. History shouldn’t be a sedative.

  • Bottom line, if you grew tired of this type of game, there's little about Samurai Warriors: Chronicles that'll pull you back into the series. At the same time, it's still an impressive and surprisingly enjoyable title that showcases the 3DS' graphical capabilities. Definitely worth a look.

  • Samurai Warriors Chronicles had a great opportunity to do something a little different on Nintendo's new handheld, but instead they went with the exact same approach to the same content that we've seen on consoles for the past decade. What a shame.

  • Everything here comes back to shallow, repetitive hack-and-slash action that quickly grows tedious. That combat defines the Samurai Warriors experience and prevents the game's more interesting elements from shining.

The slowest of slow-burners, yet it offers a huge challenge that deserves better and more varied combat and AI

  • Some will want nothing more than a 3D Samurai Warriors game they can play on the move, and for them Chronicles will fit the bill nicely. The rest of us might wish for something that doesn't feel quite so underpowered.
