  • Resident Evil: Revelations is a predominantly safe spin-off that’s neither a ship wreck nor a titanic success. It sits somewhere above mediocrity, delivering an occassionally tense survival action experience that’s undone by its overwhelming predictability. There are some neat moments on offer, and the Raid mode is a surprisingly enjoyable addition, but it’s a largely forgetful title, lost in a sea of much more memorable adventures.

  • Overall, Resident Evil: Revelations for the Xbox 360 serves up some satisfying moments and stands as a quality game when you take into consideration it is a port of a 3DS game. Yet in the end, I cannot help but think there are much better survival horror experiences on the Xbox 360 and ones that are certainly much more polished than this one.

  • Resident Evil: Revelations proves that somewhere in its DNA, Capcom still has an understanding of how to make this series work. Both raid mode and Revelations' single-player emanate a self-certainty that's increasingly rare in the series. It nails both the survival-horror tension of old-school Resident Evil and the bombastic setpieces of modern Resident Evil, and it rarely screws up in the process. It's frustrating that "good" has become an unexpected reaction for me to the Resident Evil franchise, but if Revelations is any indication, there's still an opportunity to turn that around.

  • Outside of the campaign, there's Raid mode, an opportunity to fight off enemies solo or with another player, and though the process of leveling up and earning points with which you can purchase more and better gear is predictably compelling, the combat still lacks the spark of scariness that infused the action of earlier Resident Evil entries. Revelations is a decent adventure, but it doesn't come close to reaching the heights the series has in the past.

  • For those that haven't experienced the 3DS game, or simply want to dive in again in HD on a big screen, Resident Evil Revelations on Wii U is a worthwhile investment. This title arguably delivers the franchise experience that didn't quite succeed in Resident Evil 5 and 6, combining moody environments, scares, action set-pieces and silly, campy storytelling in one enjoyable package. Raid mode is also a fantastic extra, adding hours and hours of value as you can brainlessly gun down creatures with a stranger, leveling up as you go.

  • At the end of the day, Resident Evil: Revelations is a game that delivers a memorable survival horror experience, one that’s more deserving of its lineage than most of the recent installations in the series. Even though the graphical update is evident, the mixture of high and low-resolution graphics create odd visual contrasts. However, the sound and gameplay pick up the visual slack and help to breathe life into an otherwise low-res world.

  • If you’ve played Revelations before, you’ll find few differences here with only a few new characters in raid mode and an infernal difficulty that remixes enemies and item locations for those seeking an extreme challenge. If you’ve yet to play it, this is a viable hybrid of old-evil sensibilities and new-evil action. All things considered, not a bad mutation.

With its welcome return to classic-style horror action, Resident Evil: Revelations is very much worth playing in its HD form for its atmosphere and scares alone. However, if you’ve got the choice between the remake and the original, stick with the one you can carry in your pocket – this one feels a bit uncomfortable in its own skin.

  • Resident Evil Revelations isn't as good on consoles as it is on the 3DS. It clearly wasn't designed for larger machines, and the somewhat clunky, rudimentary controls indicate that it would need to be rebuilt from the ground up to prove a superior alternative. However, it's still a fine game and still the best Resident Evil game available right now, and if you've not played it already, you truly ought to. If you've already tried it on 3DS, there's not a lot to bring you back, but any other Resident Evil fan would be best served giving it a go.

About the game

Taking place in 2005, between the events of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, the action centers on BSAA member Jill Valentine and introduces her new partner Parker Luciani. They have been sent to search for Chris Redfield, whose last known GPS data positions him as being on the ship. Far from being empty, danger lurks around every corner as Jill and Parker explore the confined space of the ship and must face a menacing new enemy that emerges from the darkness.
