- Bandai Namco needs to be applauded for bringing this over, it’s got such niche appeal and usually, these sort of games are left to the Japanese audience to enjoy. But here we are in 2013, and getting more localised Japanese RPGs than we can handle For that, we can be very happy indeed.
Chris Smith · Jul 13, 2013 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - As much as I loved Project X Zone, it's not for everyone. The story is incomprehensible. It can be pretty repetitive. And those lacking a strong attachment to Capcom, Namco Bandai, and Sega's iconic characters might want to stay away. That said, this is a love letter from Japan that just about any RPG fan should seriously consider checking out.
Kyle MacGregor · Jul 09, 2013 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Project X Zone is apt to suck in a lot of people with the promise of its large roster and entertaining 2D graphics. But it takes only a few chapters to realize that the battles are repetitive, the mechanics are shallow, the story is terrible, and the pacing is egregiously slow. Even determined fans will have a hard time sticking with this one. For all the charm of seeing Valkyria Chronicles in sprite form, the gameplay doesn't even rise to the level of mediocre. Avoid this one.
Kat Bailey · Jul 06, 2013 Reviewed on 3DS - Battles in Project X Zone can last quite a while too. It’s not out of the ordinary to see individual battles taking multiple hours. At one point, a battle lasted so long, with so many enemy ambushes, that it had to be completed over three days! Considered apart from its baked-in crossover goofyness, Project X Zone is still a rather fun strategy RPG. Granted, it’s not Fire Emblem: Awakening, but it’s still pretty fun.
CheatCC Staff · Jul 02, 2013 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Still, the gameplay provides a decent, if unremarkable, framework to support bringing these disparate characters together to clobber countless denizens of the underworld and other nefarious creatures from varied pasts and futures.
Carolyn Petit · Jul 02, 2013 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Despite the lack of depth and the repetition of combat, Project X Zone follows through as a tactical, humorous, preposterous romp through the best hits of video games. Even if you find the combat system strange, the streak of character cameos and the ridiculous number of hits that rack up with every battle will make any hardcore fan smile with appreciation. And if you're anything like me, that's hard to do.
Nick Tan · Jun 28, 2013 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - With the wealth of RPGs, and even great SRPGs, that have arrived on the 3DS in the last several months, it would almost be unconscionable not to recommend one of those games instead of Project X Zone. Fun combat and screaming Tekken characters can only take you so far.
John Learned · Jun 27, 2013 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Project X Zone is often funny and consistently frantic – two traits not necessarily associated with tactical RPGs. Its story is confusing and the chapters slavishly follow the same repetitive formula, but the superb battle system makes repetition not just tolerable, but enjoyable. Familiarity with the various franchises it pulls from will certainly add to your enjoyment, but its anime-inspired hijinks provide a great strategy fix.
Scott Thompson · Jun 26, 2013 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - It's by no means a flawless experience, but Project X Zone offers an infectiously giddy thrill that somehow only manages to grow the more time you spend with it. While the battles can go on a bit long and feel repetitive — and the staggering number of characters means a lot of redundant dialogue — the reservations we have about the game are easily outweighed by how much Project X Zone does exactly right.
Philip J Reed · Jun 25, 2013 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Project X Zone is at best a pleasingly-difficult strategy-RPG with an interesting battle system that will frustrate you at times, but keep you playing till the end. Regardless, Project X Zone is an amazing and unique experience. You’ll never play another strategy game like this!
