- The sound is also very polished. The script and voice acting is spot on, with Tommy chiming in with appropriately “action movie-esque” one-liners here and there. The music is unfortunately few and far between, and while the score gets the job done more often than not, the licensed music seems a little squandered as it only pops up a couple times in the game.
jkdmedia · Jul 20, 2006 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - Prey is packed with great ideas and there's always a surprise around every sticky corner. We need titles like this that play with convention while still courting it. They prove that you can make games within the constraints of third-party engines but still cut a new dash if you've got the imagination and mischievous sense of humour that this shooter is loaded with.
Xbox 360 - The Official Xbox Magazine · Jul 14, 2006 Reviewed on X360 - Prey is something of a paradox, because it’s got a ton of original ideas wrapped up in a package we’ve seen a dozen times before. It’s worth experiencing if you played the demo and are curious to see more, but it doesn’t live up to the monumental hype it’s built up all these years.
Game Trailers · Jul 14, 2006 Reviewed on X360 - If you pick up Prey, even as a rental, you'll have a good time. The unique gravity and portal mechanics bolted onto the fairly traditional FPS gameplay make for a fun ride, and something that you can blast through over a weekend. Whether or not it's good value for money is debateable, but the online component has the potential to become very popular. A sequel is definitely coming (it even says so in the game), and the foundation has been set for a strong series, but as a true contender to the FPS crown Prey falls a fair way short.
Tom Orry · Jul 14, 2006 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - Prey is a great game. Fans that have been waiting since its first announcement won't find a game that will change the world or the way games are played, but will find a rock-solid game filled with innovation, a compelling story, and gorgeous graphics. Even after the relatively short single player mode is finished, Prey still has an excellent Xbox Live multiplayer filled with the same features as the game. Fans of FPS games, this may be the game you've been praying for. At least until Gears of War and Halo 3.
D'Marcus Beatty · Jul 13, 2006 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The real fun comes from multiplayer combat, where something totally unexpected happens every 10 seconds. It could have been much better if only there were more than two modes (deathmatch and team deathmatch) and a couple of maps small enough to play with less than five players, but Prey is still a major blast for shooter fans with strong stomachs.
Dan Stapleton · Jul 10, 2006 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - Prey's campaign won't take too long, and it's rarely difficult, which makes it a solid choice if you're looking for an easy weekend romp. But much of the game's potential for unique thrills feels wasted by its straightforward level design, and the multiplayer doesn't add much to the package. Fans of the genre have probably played games better than Prey in the past, but the action and the environments you move through are interesting enough to make playing through the game worthwhile.
Jeff Gerstmann · Jul 10, 2006 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - And there is a narrative here, fueled by good voice acting, animation, and characterization. The alien presence isn't merely "We've come to destroy earthlings, rawwrrrgghgh!" They have their reasons for coming to Earth, and it goes beyond mere plunder, enslavement, or occupation. With some truly imaginative level design, a compelling story with dramatic highlights, good voice acting and dialog, and more interesting weapons, Prey earns a spot on this shooter fan's hard drive. If you're not sold, I recommend checking out the demo.
Tom McNamara · Jul 10, 2006 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Perhaps inevitably - although maybe not intentionally - Prey struggles to break free of its late '90s genesis, and essentially what we're left with is a game whose good intentions simply don't translate into wide-eyed entertainment. With uninspiring and basic deathmatch multiplayer options failing to rescue the package, it looks like it's going to be another long hot summer for FPS devotees.

About the game
Prey tells the story of Tommy, a Cherokee garage mechanic stuck on a reservation going nowhere. Abducted along with his people to a menacing mothership orbiting Earth, he sets out to save himself and his girlfriend and eventually his planet.
In Prey, players enter a living spaceship which enslaves alien races and devours humans for lunch. A unique twist on the first person shooter genre, Prey features such innovations as the ability to walk on walls, manipulate gravity and perform a "spirit walk" by leaving your physical body behind. Designed by Human Head and brought to Xbox 360 by Venom Games (under the direction of 3D Realms), Prey features full online support for up to eight players, utilizing the game's play innovations for unique multiplayer experiences.
