  • Neon Abyss is a very challenging game, but the gameplay loop can get boring quickly, and there are some bugs which might have been fixed by the time you are reading this review I would recommend you to get Neon Abyss if you like Contra and Dead Cells or any other Metroidvania or Roguelike games because it is similar to them the developers did a great job on the level design.

  • That aside, Neon Abyss is an absolute joy. Having put plenty of times into other games like this, Neon Abyss is the first where it felt like the deck was stacked equally between the enemies and the player. Sometimes, the random swings go the enemies’ way, and you find no bombs, no keys, and die to spikes while making what should have been a super easy jump.

  • Neon Abyss is no marvel, but still is pretty solid. It offers an entertaining time with good runs being especially satisfying. That said, some other runs can be a complete slog to get through, like those I mentioned in the review, where no resources drop. Every time I had no bombs or keys, I ended up feeling like I was wasting my time clearing the whole floor since a lot of rooms require those resources. It is also really unsatisfying when, after spending a precious resource to open a chest, nothing more than a coin comes out.

  • Neon Abyss is a great example of a rogue-lite game that is done right. The visuals and soundtrack make exploration a lot of fun. The gun mechanics and crazy powerups make it a lot of fun to kill everything in sight. The game just falls a little short when it comes to random rooms. They are often very small and cluttered. It is easy to lose where your character is on the screen until you either die or everything else in the room is dead.

  • Overall, Neon Abyss is, at most, enjoyable with the many features it offers. I like experimenting with characters and unlocking advanced items and being able to use them for free on a trial basis is an amusing perk. If patience isn’t your forte, then this might not be the game for you. It might be more enjoyable when there is an option to add another player whether online or offline. Maybe we will see it on the next DLC, maybe not?

  • Neon Abyss is a fun, fast-paced twist on the rogue-like genre with a solid core gameplay loop. Although it brings new ideas to the table in the form of collectible eggs, and it has a good variety of weapons, enemies and synergies, it's not without its drawbacks. Performance issues, the lack of the genre's typical dodge button, and the chaotic room design all prevent Neon Abyss from being a must buy title.

  • In all, Neon Abyss is a beautifully made game that does their chosen genre justice, demonstrating a beautiful atmosphere and a challenging yet rewarding experience, when either the dice rolls in your favor or you manage to do well even despite a bad hand being given to you. If luck is on your side, Neon Abyss is chaotic fun as a run ‘n gun and bullet hell, and if luck took a sick day, well, you can still manage to accomplish a surprising amount.

  • I’ve never had much luck with the subgenre, but Neon Abyss was my saving grace. Perhaps it throws its players a treat too many, but the emphasis on thriving over surviving is a breath of fresh air. Neon Abyss might not be good for as many runs as other roguelikes and rogue-lites, but each trip into the abyss packs a whole lot more punch.

  • Neon Abyss is a game that offers a lot, but we have the feeling it's going to be a bit of an also-ran in the roguelite genre. If so, that's a shame, because it's an enormous amount of fun, with a good challenge, lovely controls and plenty of scope for craziness: which is all a roguelite really needs to be compelling. As long as you don't expect to be blown away, we can give Neon Abyss a strong recommendation.

  • Neon Abyss is undoubtedly one of the best Rogue-likes in recent years; gorgeous, meticulously designed and a hell of a lot of fun to play. It’s a shame a few bugs let it down, but hopefully they’ll be ironed out before long, then what’s left will be nothing but an exhilarating experience.
