  • Firebrand Games might have previously unleashed a stinker on us with a certain NASCAR game, but with Need for Speed: The Run, the studio's proven that it's definitely still got what it takes to give us hours of portable racing enjoyment. While flawed in a few areas, the superb online experience and high speed action strapped into the little cartridge here packs enough thrills to satisfy any 3DS owner with an insistence for speed.

  • There’s a good idea buried under the enormous drifts of tedium, but even EA’s signature polish only manages to panel-beat this into passable game. This should have been a modern-day Outrun, instead it’s an obvious misfire.

The Run doesn’t have the structure or production values to carry off its concept. Even if it did, its successes would be smothered by a procession of awful technical flaws. Lacking charm and polish, only the Need For Speed name will sell the game – which will no doubt mean that it fares well enough.

  • NFS: The Run is a fast, frantic, and thoroughly enjoyable racer. The idea of a movie-encased racing game is an excellent one, and despite the fact that EA’s first attempt lacks due tact or sophistication, the over-the-top plot does add extra context and excitement to the basic premise of driving at ridiculous speeds.

  • Sure, The Run looks and sounds great but great presentation value isn’t enough. Beyond the main campaign there are some mild thrills in a set of challenges and decent set of online options that help to add some replayability to the game but the frustration of some cheap gameplay elements and poor design outweighs any entertainment value.. It is all a real shame because this one could have been so amazing.

  • I really wanted to like Need for Speed: The Run for the PC; unfortunately, I did not. The Run has many good qualities and had a great deal of potential, but the poor game design and subpar execution make it tough to recommend The Run for PC users. If you’re totally starved for an arcade racer then The Run could keep you busy for a few hours. Just be aware there are much better options available for your PC.

  • Need for Speed: The Run takes players on a cross country competition for the promise of rich rewards, but ultimately the function of delivering the narrative hinders an otherwise decent driving game.

We didn't miss an open world. We didn't miss the chance to constantly pick cars and tracks. We were fully along for the ride. We blasted through this like the cars were weapons and the Tarmac was the enemy, and damn it if it isn't exciting.

  • It's a shame that The Run doesn't deliver more fully on the potential of its premise. It's bogged down by unnecessary quick-time events and annoying mob chases, a halfhearted attempt to tell a story, and frustrating interruptions to your racing. In spite of these burdens, the game frequently makes you feel like you're tearing across the varied terrain of this vast and majestic country.

  • The Need for Speed series has taken a few twists and turns over the years, but the arcade versions have always tried to stick to the basic formulas. Need for Speed: The Run takes this formula and improves upon it. Adding in real world environments, with real world cities and landmarks, gives the game a real world feel.

About the game

Adrenaline junkies and speed fiends will find themselves on the wrong side of the law when they race for their lives in Need for Speed: The Run. This game takes players on a heart-pounding cross-country race from San Francisco to New York. Players are lured into an underground world of illicit, high-stakes racing. The heat is on -- and it isn't just the fuzz who are after you. Entering the race is just the beginning as you blow across borders, weave through dense urban traffic, rocket down icy mountain passes and navigate narrow canyons at breakneck speeds.
