- Just as the real Napoleon dominated Europe with the same muskets, cavalry, and cannons used by his predecessors, Napoleon: Total War offers nothing radically different from the previous games in the series. However, it manages to improve upon the Total War franchise in almost every way while adding its own unique Napoleonic flavor. Whether it's the addictive turn-based campaigns or the thrill of running down routed Austrians with your cavalry, Napoleon offers countless hours of entertainment.
Daniel Shannon · Mar 01, 2010 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Napoleon: Total War may not rewrite history, but its subtle gameplay refinements, tactical variety, and new multiplayer campaign do more than enough to offset the litany of legacy issues hindering this otherwise impressive strategy game. If Creative Assembly wants to match the strategic legacy of the famed French general, however, it’s time to address battle AI and diplomacy feedback before they compromise the franchise’s integrity.
Matt Bertz · Feb 23, 2010 Reviewed on PC - The scope of Napoleon: Total War is somewhat smaller than previous games in the series - Research and Diplomacy have been de-emphasized, likely because of the shorter time frame in which the events in the game take place. Even so, Napoleon: Total War is such an immense title that any fan of the genre should check it out. If you're not typically a strategy gamer, there might be something in here to convert you.
Matthew Zoss · Feb 23, 2010 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Napoleon is an enjoyable addition to the Total War franchise but it's not as a big a game changer as previous sequels. While Napoleon and his armies were probably every bit as terrifying as Mongols, Vikings or Barbarians, the scope of this sequel is a bit more limited. On the plus side, it allows gamers to experience a historically inspired version of one of history's greatest military careers. On the downside, there's not quite as much variety here. Campaign multiplayer is a welcome addition that neatly sidesteps the sometimes passive AI and works to reduce, if not exactly eliminate, the potential downtime inherent in the format.
Steve Butts · Feb 18, 2010 Reviewed on PCRead full review - By all rights, some of the benefits seen in Napoleon should be bled back into Empire, if only to justify the tensions and pain many gamers went through during Empire’s early days. For technical reasons, that sadly will not be possible, and the announced cancellation of further post release support is worrying. Still, we think you’ll be able to enjoy Napoleon for what it is - a finely crafted, dynamic, and engaging strategic game.
Joe Robinson · Mar 01, 2010 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Multiplayer mysteries aside, Napoleon represents a healthy step forward for the Total War series. The visual improvements, more pleasant interface, neater structure and smooth learning curve easily justify the low asking price of £20. That the AI still leaves a lot to be desired and the naval battles are still boring is a shame, and the former is something Creative Assembly sorely need to remedy for the series' next reboot.
Quintin Smith · Feb 26, 2010 Reviewed on PCRead full review - A more nuanced campaign map with greater strategic options. The introduction of attrition, unit replenishment. Spies and gentlemen are more versatile units. A finite pool of military leaders, based on historical figures, who convey genuine advantages on and off the battlefield. More diplomatic options. Looting returns.
