· Apr 22, 2025 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review- The Metal Slug series is back, though not as you know it. Metal Slug Tactics swaps the series' run-and-gun shooter antics for turn-based battles, and adds in some roguelike elements to boot. It's just a shame that while there are some neat ideas here, it's not all that entertaining overall.
Richard Seagrave · Nov 14, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Metal Slug Tactics does an excellent job of capturing the look and feel of Metal Slug and reimagining it as a turn-based strategy roguelite. The way its strategic elements combine adrenaline-fueled abilities and sync attacks makes for exciting combat that feels smart. It's too bad that a successful run is so reliant on luck, whether it's a favorable mix of missions or the right rewards and upgrades dropping. That, and the uncomfortably outdated enemy designs, are unforced errors that limit the advance of this otherwise capable army.
Justin Koreis · Nov 12, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Though it’s not without some technical issues and frustratingly inaccessible small font in menus you have to squint at, Metal Slug Tactics is a blast of a rogue-lite adventure. It’s a quality return to a long-running franchise and one that has translated its difficulty and style well by offering enticing risk vs reward mechanics at every turn and striking pixel art and visual flourishes to boot. With plenty of experimentation in character abilities and what feels like endless upgrades and unlocks to chase, it’s a rogue-lite venture that is only complimented by the more hours you put into it. You get your money’s worth here. SNK and Leikir Studio have successfully completed their mission of making Metal Slug exciting and relevant once more. Job well done.
Charlie Kelly · Nov 11, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There is a good game here, sometimes a great one. Excellent art and animation, smart gameplay twists, and a genuinely refreshing pace really add some exciting new depth to the tactics genre and are huge positives. But it takes a while for the experience to smooth out and actually become enjoyable, and restrictive gameplay design choices don’t do it any favours, either. Metal Slug Tactics is one for the tactics fans looking for a fresh take, but just know you’ll have to put in some work to see the best parts of it.
Echo Apsey · Nov 07, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - While its lack of optimization and frequent glitches occasionally crashed the party like an enemy hand grenade, Metal Slug Tactics‘ fast-paced, feature-rich combat and wealth of unlockable content kept me coming back for more. If you’re a fan of the franchise with a love for classic PS1 SRPGs like Vandal Hearts and Final Fantasy Tactics, then this is a fight worth enlisting in – even if it’s a patch or two away from reaching its full potential.
Francis DiPersio · Nov 06, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - A very clever spin-off that subverts your expectations about Tactics games by replicating the gameplay and visuals of Metal Slug through the medium of a fast-paced and surprisingly innovative strategy game.
GameCentral · Nov 06, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The team at Leikir Studio have managed to transplant the spirit of Metal Slug into an entirely different type of game here – and it’s nothing short of miraculous. Metal Slug Tactics is a marvel of clever design, as well as an utter joy to play, and I really hope that it’s the start of a long-running sub-series for the Metal Slug franchise.
Jam Walker · Nov 06, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Still, just like the Metal Slug franchise in general, Tactics is ultimately stacked with a silly joy that’s hard to deny. Getting to see fan favourites together again will give long-term fans plenty of reason to pick this up, and fans of difficult tactical titles will have enough to get their teeth stuck into. Some things may work better than others, but there’s always room for a good strategy game, and Metal Slug Tactics is easily up there with the best in recent memory.
Richard Bank · Nov 06, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - In the end, Metal Slug Tactics is a wonderful little side-track on an otherwise very obscure game series. With its fast pace and peculiar game system, it offers something new to the veterans of the genre while presenting newbies something to enjoy. The experience is challenging yet inviting, and you'll often find yourself wanting to play just one more round, if only to see the beautiful animations or hear the fantastic music. If you like the series already, this is a must-have purchase, but if you are new to the Metal Slug experience, I still recommend that you give this an honest try. It's not a masterpiece by any means, but Metal Slug Tactics is a hell of a lot of fun to play. What more could you want?
