  • The Game Freak fan in me wants to heartily recommend Harmoknight, because it might mean more non-Pokémon games from the studio going forward, but my conscience is loudly overruling her. Harmoknight isn't a bad little tune, but its simple melody just doesn't have the strength to carry a truly memorable song.

  • HarmoKnight is a darling rhythm platformer with plenty of heart, but it's over too quickly, offering little in the way of surprises or challenge, and providing too scant a challenge to inspire return visits. Game Freak has a lot up its sleeve, but as is, its maiden voyage into the rhythm genre isn't an entirely successful one.

At it's launch price of $15, HarmoKnight is one of the more expensive 3DS eShop games available - but it's also one of the best and lengthier ones. From start to finish, the experience is so enjoyable that it's easily recommendable to any 3DS owner with an affinity for rhythm games. If only Game Freak would step out of their Pokémon shell more often, because the result of the developer's experimentation is awesome.

It’s refreshingly exacting about timing, though too forgiving when it comes to grading

  • Harmoknight has that deceptively simple, cheery, Rhythm Heaven-like quality that belies just how addictive it can be. Though it's not particularly innovative in any way and the story is rather throwaway, its flaws don't significantly mar what is still an effervescent and enjoyable experience. For a downloadable title priced at around $15 for the 3DS handheld, it notably strikes the right chords.

  • In the end, though, the music needs to shine, and HarmoKnight fails to measure up to the best in the genre. We continued playing, not to see how the story unfolded, but in the hope the soundtrack would substantially improve. Unfortunately, we can't recall a single tune, and as a result, will vaguely remember this title once 2013 concludes.

  • HarmoKnight manages to combine attractive cartoon-like visuals with engaging, rhythm-based gameplay to create an experience which can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with genre classics like Vib Ribbon, Gitaroo Man and PaRappa the Rappa.

  • Anybody who enjoys the music and action but hopes to see a steadily increasing damage curve through the game should definitely pick it up. Anybody who finds that the action doesn't quite click with them should probably give it a pass, because the game's basic flow and strict rhythmic requirements remain consistent throughout.

  • HarmoKnight is a wonderful bundle of charm and joy that doesn't really punish failure but rather encourages perseverance and dedication. There isn't even a "Game Over" when you die! Instead, the screen reads, "Oh Dear..." Reminds me of a mother who picks up a child who fell off the jungle gym, dusts him off, and gently urges him to try again. It's such a minor touch, but it's nonetheless uplifting.

  • While the world and the people who lived there were bright and vibrant, most of the gameplay was either boring or frustrating. I’m sure the younger crowd will appreciate the game more than I did, but even they would be put off by the unresponsive controls and dull soundtrack. In the future I really do hope that Game Freak continue to experiment outside of the Pokémon universe but also bring the quality we expect from that franchise to their other projects.
