Critic Reviews
- We were wary of Gears of War and its hype-fueled debut, but actually playing this magnum opus has shoved all doubts from our extremely critical minds. If you own a 360, you owe it to yourself to buy this game (and an Xbox Live account... and broadband internet service if you don't already have either of those). If you like guns at all, you owe it to yourself to buy a 360 just for Gears of War - you will not be the least bit sorry.
Gabe Graziani · Jun 29, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Epic's year-old action beast proves just as enjoyable on PC as it was on Xbox 360. The mouse and keyboard allow for more precise control, and the graphics have been improved as well. With the additional single-player content, King of the Hill multiplayer mode, extra maps, and a map editor, Gears offers an even more impressive feature set than before.
Charles Onyett · Nov 07, 2007 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Gears of War is all about breaking apart the status quo, and the port to PC succeeds masterfully in this endeavor just as the Xbox 360 version did. It's a heavy hitter on every level. If you missed-out on the first go around, definitely pick up the PC version for the extra goodies and - mostly - improved controls. It's the best Halo alternative around, and if you're looking for something a bit different, you might even find Gears of War to be ultimately superior.
NATHAN MEUNIER · Nov 06, 2007 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Slight problems with the checkpoint system when playing alone aside, it's hard to see how another game could come along and better what Gears of War does. Played with a friend, on Hardcore, Gears of War is simply an astounding game. Yes, it has the best visuals ever to grace a video game, but it's how these are used to create an intense shooter that make it so good.
Tom Orry · Nov 16, 2006 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - Gears of War presents its world extremely well. While the story may not be very fleshed out, the world and the sense of atmosphere make it compelling. Gears of War is a fantastic journey that takes advantage of what the Xbox 360 has to offer, and shouldn’t be missed.
jkdmedia · Nov 09, 2006 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - Gears of War is a game that capitalizes on all of the promises made by the next generation of gaming. It looks more than a few steps beyond what consoles have been doing to this point, and the gameplay is supremely fulfilling from start to finish in all of its various modes. While there have certainly been plenty of similar shooters before it, the game's great weapons, amazing graphics, and absolutely thrilling action make it stand out from the pack in a big, big way.
Jeff Gerstmann · Nov 07, 2006 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - Gears of War is a must-have game, pure and simple. Epic has effectively created a new gaming universe, and the rich story of planet Sera holds its own with the likes of Hyrule, City 17 and the Mushroom-friggin'-Kingdom. A game so gorgeous, both visually and aurally, that is this fun to play comes along only a handful of times a console generation.
Jonathan Miller · Nov 07, 2006 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Gears of War is fairly short, and with no vehicles in the multiplayer, its overall longevity could become an issue without adequate post-launch support. But what is here is some of the best gaming to be had this year. The attention to detail—from the heat waves that emanate from discharged weapons to the ultra-gory executions--help it to ascend above the status quo. It borrows many ideas from other games, but manages to perfect almost all of them.
Game Trailers · Nov 07, 2006 Reviewed on PC, X360 - Epic has constructed an extremely well-refined shooter with beautiful environments, intense gameplay and an high level of variety. It'll leave you wanting more, but what's there is the best shooter experience you'll have on the Xbox 360.
Andy Robinson · Nov 07, 2006 Reviewed on X360 - Past fans looking to revisit the game for the multiplayer aspect may want to look away, or even think about purchasing the Ultimate Edition of the first Gears of War. However, the campaign does a terrific job in forming these characters that end up becoming franchise staples, while the high production values makes this experience truly cinematic. Though the AI teammates can be very bothersome and prove to be liabilities, going at it with a partner for a co-op playthrough is where the true fun begins.

Trailers & Screenshots:
Unlike other shooters, Gears of War is all about teamwork in a big way. All game modes, levels and scenarios are designed specifically to encourage co-operative play, whether it be with A.I. partners or human players (with A.I. teammates designed with specific strengths, weaknesses and personalities.) On top of that, voice recognition will be available for players, and obviously voice chat to discuss strategy with your friends. In addition to voice chat, gamers will be able to experience individualized matchmaking, view player statistics, earn player achievements, customize their games, and build and personalize their gamer profiles over Xbox Live.
