  • Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is in a tricky position, coming to consoles currently dominated by the undeniably slick Call of Duty 4 and the insanely popular GTA 4. Xbox 360 owners should certainly consider giving Quake Wars a shot though.

  • You'll love the giant sandbox filled with such distinct classes, high-tech weaponry, and attack vehicles. But when limited to only 16 players on just 12 maps, the gameplay is one-dimensional. Next to so many solid console shooters that feature persistent upgrades and customization, along with a variety of multiplayer game modes in addition to a single-player campaign, Quake Wars is incredibly shallow.

  • All in all, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars is a solid team-based shooter that should appeal to a lot of players out there. If you loved games such as Frontlines: Fuel of War or even Unreal Tournament you'll be happy with this title. On the downside, there is a spate of technical issues and if you don't have a fast internet connection or regularly experience connection issues, I wouldn't suggest to pick up this game.

  • Players looking for yet another Battlefield game might come away confused and frustrated by Enemy Territory. It’s a far more nuanced game than you might expect, but it’s also very forgiving, allowing the player to find his own role in the fight. You could think of it as a multiplayer game that’s very friendly to the single-player mentality. Or you could think of it as a kick-ass online action game. Either way you’d be right.

The formula set forth in Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory in 2003 has evolved rather well with Quake Wars, delivering a distinct gameplay experience centered around team dynamics. It may not be the prettiest game out there or feature the greatest sound effects, but the enjoyable core of gameplay helps keep things interesting as you blast through the twelve well-designed maps.

  • If you're an Enemy Territory veteran, this is the logical next step for you. And if you've been turned off by team shooters in the past, this one may change your mind. The accessible, objective-focused gameplay won't be for everyone, especially those into the chaotic, freeform warfare of other team shooters. But all told, Quake Wars is great fun and should provide FPS fans with a lot to sink their teeth into.

It's a game with relentless pace, but where flanking, careful sniping, and support actions are all a part of a successful co-operative experience. Watching speeding buggies going flying madly off ramps into deep canyons is just as much a part of the action as the prone support gunner, or a leaping, bombing Strogg jetpack dude.

  • At the end of it all, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is one of those games you want to like, but can’t. You want to say “Hey, it’s not you, it’s me”, but you can’t do that either. Just about the only thing you can do is play, enjoy it as much as you can and give it a pat on the back for trying.

  • That said, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is by no means a shoddy product. Despite struggling to make a good first impression, it's one of those games that you find yourself getting more out of the more you invest into it, and hides a surprising amount of depth. The biggest question mark is whether a big enough online community will spring up around it to allow it to fulfill its potential.

  • However, the real joy of Quake Wars: Enemy Territory comes from getting a good team together, and pitting your wits against another well-practised foe over Xbox Live. As hardcore shooters go, few have managed to strike quite so perfect a balance between strategy and good old-fashioned shooting skill.

About the game

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars pits the armies of Earth against the invading alien Strogg in an online strategic shooter. Players choose to battle as one of five unique classes in either the EDF (Earth Defense Force -- humans) or the barbaric alien Strogg armies. Troops use 40+ conventional and futuristic vehicles, deployable structures, and defense systems like quad-bikes, tanks, and alien walkers for epic ground assaults; or helicopters and anti-gravity ships to lend firepower from the air.
