- Ebenezer and the Invisible World is a unique concept that fails to deliver a fun experience. The continuation of Charles Dickens’ tale of redemption is a fun idea with a beautiful art style that matches the vibe. Sadly, unoriginal gameplay and unprecise controls can’t save the game from falling into the bland Metroidvania masses.
Wirotaboto · Feb 05, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Novelty is a steep challenge, and Ebenezer and the Invisible World succeeds admirably at showing us something new and exciting. The game features a cool concept married with challenging and invigorating gameplay. The problem is that it’s still shackled by glitches and occasionally poor game design. While the adventure is expansive and easily could take 10+ hours to get through, it’s a little hard to wholeheartedly recommend until many of the issues mentioned above have been addressed.
Josh Speer · Nov 06, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Ebenezer and the Invisible World is refreshing on one hand in that it manages to break the curse of awful festive games by delivering a tightly focused Metroidvania offering that boasts an attractive visual veneer. On the other however, it's also clear that Ebenezer and the Invisible World certainly doesn't break any new ground in the genre and arguably fades somewhat when compared to its more illustrious peers. Nonetheless, though far from exceptional, Ebenezer and the Invisible World still presents a perfectly entertaining genre entry all the same and a great way to celebrate the holidays.
John-Paul Jones · Nov 05, 2023 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - If I was to sum up Ebenezer and the Invisible World in one word, it’d be unbalanced. The difficulty is all over the place, the game is stuffed to the brim with bugs, the combat leaves a lot to be desired and the levels themselves are often either barren or stuffed. However, with these negatives comes one heck of a positive in the form of some truly tremendous art direction and thoughtful storytelling.
William Caruana · Nov 04, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Ebenezer and the Invisible World: The lovely absurd concept of a metroidvania in the world of Charles Dickens gets hindered by game breaking bugs and dodgy controls.
Damiano Gerli · Nov 03, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - To summarise, I don’t want to be too harsh on the developers of Ebenezer and the Invisible World because I've reviewed games that are way less finished than this. But I really hope that some of these things get resolved in the day one patch; otherwise, those who decide to pick it up will feel a little hard done by.
Steve Whiting · Nov 03, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - We wanted to enjoy Ebenezer and The Invisible World far more than we did. The combat is solid and the platforming is tight, with the right balance of accessibility and challenge. Combine that with a fun concept and art that does a great job of recreating Dickens’ iconic novel and it should be a recipe for greatness. Unfortunately, a host of bugs ranging from slightly annoying to game-breaking sucked the Christmas cheer right out of us. Future patches might fix these issues and give us the game we know is hiding just beneath the surface here, but that game isn’t here at launch.
Trent Cannon · Nov 03, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Ebenezer and the Invisible World brings forward a fun new concept. But actually getting you to enjoy it fully is a whole other ball game. With tedious and lackluster combat and enemies dragging down, it’s standing solely on concept and visuals. Overall, it doesn’t seem to bring anything special or engaging to the metroidvania table.
TISHA KAMBARAMI · Nov 02, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - If you’re into metroidvanias and don’t mind a challenge, you’d be wise to give Ebenezer and the Invisible World a go. It likely won’t set your world on fire, but it at least might make you a little warm and fuzzy inside, what with all its Christmas cheer. Well, either that or make you swear like a sailor.
Richard Seagrave · Nov 02, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - A fun and by-the-book metroidvania, Ebenezer and the Invisible World brings my favourite Christmas story to videogames, but perhaps sticks too closely to its genre and avoids innovating a tad much.
