You play as a number of generals, and your task is to lead battles, observing the ebb and flow of the conflict and adjusting your plans as and when necessary. Some live for the strategy, but we find that it just comes down to whacking buttons until your fingers turn to liquid. It's worth a rental to see if you like it - but it's not for us, and, we suspect it won't be for you.

  • There's no question that Dynasty Warriors 6 plays it safe with the series' tried-and-tested formula, which means fans will lap it up, whereas those who tried a previous game and found it not to their liking will find nothing here to change their view. For everyone else, Dynasty Warriors 6 is a decent beat-'em-up with plenty of gameplay packed in.

  • If you’ve played any Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, or Orochi Warriors game in the past, you know what to expect of Dynasty Warriors 6. The game isn’t terrible, but it isn’t any more engaging or less repetitive than it’s been for the past five versions. Maybe one day Koei will be bothered to implement a better camera, more engaging controls, or online play, but for now this franchise feels stuck in a rut.

  • I can't help but feel very disappointed by DW6. There's a great game buried somewhere deep within the Dynasty Warriors concept, and now that the Xbox 360 and the PS3 have been out for a while there really is no reason why it can't happen. But it seems that Omega Force either can't be bothered to breathe fresh air into the franchise...

  • Ultimately, Dynasty Warriors 6 tries some brave new things, fails in certain aspects, but still manages to provide the same button mashing action that won it a hardcore fanbase. Whether it can add to that fanbase with this latest installment remains to be seen, but with a higher level of intensity and a battlefield brimming with life, it's a good starting point for newcomers.

  • The best thing to say about Dynasty Warriors 6 is that it's an easy way to kill quite a few hours, but that doesn't make it particularly good. In much the same way, many people will salivate thinking about a can of Pringles, but that doesn't mean the reconstituted potato shingles are food.

  • What was once regarded as a fun-but-shallow game series has transformed into a shallow-and-pointless one. Dynasty Warriors 6 does not totally fail as a game, but it has begun my own personal disenchantment with the series. There is a whole lot of potential behind the Dynasty Warriors series, and it is a real shame that it has become stagnant over the years. Even though Dynasty Warriors 6 does do a lot of things better than before, it is just not enough to make it a great game.

If you're a passionate Dynasty Warriors fan, you're probably going to grab a copy of this game regardless of what I write here. Generally, this title delivers just about the same experience that the previous games delivered, so fans should give it a try. Otherwise, I had more fun with Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, which I would recommend to those new to the franchise but looking for a "better" button-mashing experience.

  • While Hardcore DW fans will no doubt be surprised by this sequel's simplicity, we're hopeful it will introduce a new generation of fans to this much-deserving series. It's the most accessible entry to date, but not the most compelling.

  • It's as good as the game has ever been, and so there's never been a better time to try it out. And if it's still not for you, well then it's still not for you, but at least you tried. If you are one of the Dynasty Warrioring gaming public, you will buy this and love this. So it's a good job Koei keeps trying.

About the game

Based on the epic novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the genre-defining Dynasty Warriors series depicts the massive battles ignited by the fall of the Han Dynasty when three rebellious states moved to overthrow the Emperor of China. Expanding over the original with a new combat engine, Dynasty Warriors 6 delivers the exhilaration of single-handedly destroying thousands of soldiers on massive fields of combat. The lightning-fast king-fu fighting, fluid animation, intuitive combat system and immersive game environments push the limits of tactical action!
