And that, as they say, is that. What you get for your money is an exceptionally solid RPG with plenty of life in it, but one that doesn't do anything particularly different to anything else on the market, and for that reason alone it guarantees one of our shiny new Recommended awards, but nothing more.

  • The best way to experience what DSII has to offer is through co-operative mode - you can play the entire game's storyline with other people. There's nothing more enjoyable than storming a dungeon with a party of your friends.

  • Although you won't get tons of replay value out of Dungeon Siege II, you will get to spend many, many hours on your first run through with virtually no filler. If you're into hacking and slashing and unlocking all kinds of great treasures then you'll want to grab a copy of Dungeon Siege II during your next videogame raid at your local gaming store.

When it comes down to it, Dungeon Siege II is a fine game that takes a while to appreciate. Those expecting a straightforward dungeon hack will find those elements in spades, while the traditional RPG fan will also be rewarded with a long story and lots of world detail. I contend that if DS2 rubs you the wrong way then you're just not digging deep enough.

  • Not exactly a new gaming style, Dungeon Siege II was somewhat predictable when it came to the evolution of the story. The camera can be a nuisance, as is tying so much to the mouse. However, with solid sounds and graphical elements, and a definite challenge throughout the game, this is an enjoyable adventure.

  • But critiquing a fantasy story in an RPG is a little like shooting orcs in a barrel. It hangs together well enough, and more exists as an excuse to create the set-pieces which provide Dungeon Siege with its most memorable moments. Simple puzzles in the underground, or battles in the treetop against leaping monsters enchant. While the boss fights are a little uninspiring, and where your team-mate AI most frustrates, it's a high calibre of slashing.

About the game

Dungeon Siege II casts players into a land deeply scarred by civil war, where they lead an elite battle party against a vicious marauder hell-bent on bringing the world under his control, no matter the cost. Dungeon Siege II raises the bar for action-RPGs by introducing a deeper storyline, an extensive quest system and a new AI system creating more challenging and cunning foes.
