  • The trick here is that Double Dragon Neon almost requires you to get really good at dodging and ducking. Even low-level baddies can take off surprisingly hefty chunks of your health, so evasion is critical for success. I had a hard time getting the timing down on dodging—the window for a successful dodge is quite brief, so expect to take some hard knocks while you learn the technique.

  • In the end, Double Dragon Neon is yet another well-tuned and well-oiled retro beat ‘em up for the Switch that still holds up eight years later. While it might not best its contemporaries in the genre today, this reboot of an arcade beat ‘em up classic does well enough to impress veterans and newcomers alike.

  • Double Dragon Neon is an old game for sure, but fortunately, it's far from being an outdated one. Under the watchful consultation of series creator Yoshihisa Kishimoto, WayForward managed to successfully reboot the franchise back in 2012 for a whole new audience by adding a healthy dose of craziness to the more classic tropes of the genre, and that inventiveness still holds merit in 2021.

  • Its graphics are bland and its gameplay is lethargic and faulty. There are tons of much better arcade brawlers available for the Switch, so don’t bother with this one. Maybe this was exactly what I needed to confirm the harsh truth: maybe Double Dragon has never been that good to begin with…

  • Double Dragon Neon is a game that disguises its hardcore gameplay within a constantly entertaining 80’s nostalgia-filled fever dream. It’s never serious and it never tries to modernize when it doesn’t need to, and that’s what makes Double Dragon Neon such an excellent example of a reborn classic.

  • It’s got humor, visual flair, excellent gameplay, and a brilliant soundtrack. Some technical problems hold this version back from being near-flawless, so it might be in your best interest to grab a “bro” and team up in local multiplayer, high-fiving each other until your hands bleed.

  • It's the grinding that honestly made this game more of a chore for me than an enjoyment. If you need that old-school fix, there are better ways to do it on both PSN and XBLA, and you can just download and listen to the songs through your iPod or something if you really need the flashback. I just can't recommend it beyond the die-hard Double Dragon folks… if any of you are still out there.

  • Average players will probably complete the first difficulty level in 2-3 hours and disappointingly, the only real replayability here involves beating the game again on a harder difficulty setting. But even with that in mind, Double Dragon Neon is easily one of the most polished PSN titles available to date, and if you don’t at least give it a spin (kick), then the joke is on you.

  • Double Dragon: Neon is a lot like restoring a favorite old car – you can repaint it, give it a good waxing, add a bunch of flair and make it look shiny; but without new parts, it’s still the same old car you drove 25 years ago. If players are more concerned with their fond memories of an old series then polished mechanics and updated controls, then Double Dragon: Neon is certain to delight them with a ton of charm and appeal that is a welcome addition to the Double Dragon Saga.

The animations are flawless and delightfully colored. Certain scenes, like a silhouetted battle in a mountaintop monastery, shone through the silliness of the game and offered something stunning to look at. If you have a brother, a sister, a roommate or a significant other . . . you absolutely must buy this game.
