- The story and voice acting keep the levels ticking by and elevate what could have been a very rote affair. The dodgeball gameplay does let the story do the heavy lifting after about halfway, becoming rather repetitive, but it also provides a realistic touch of conflict and aggression whenever the dialogue leans into super-niceness, and the roguelike strategy plays smoothly enough to be a pleasant delivery mechanism for the tale of Desta unpacking and coming to terms with their emotional conflicts.

Though the individual elements are solid, a lack of commitment to roguelike randomization in the single mode available at launch means the systems don’t really mesh together how you’d expect, and the replay value suffers as a result.

Desta's journey, however, is a relatable one and helping them complete it--even in a dream--was a cathartic experience that made me want to text that friend I had not spoken with in years.

Everyone has suffered a loss that has affected them greatly, whether a close friend or a family member. These losses can have a big impact on our mental health, and the way Ustwo Games has dealt with the subject matter is commendable. Not only does it offer a poignant narrative, the strategic gameplay compliments the dodgeball elements in a great way. Despite having to replay certain aspects over and over again if you choose to embrace the roguelike elements, each battle is varied and enjoyable.

Su competente gameplay nos obliga a revivir una y otra vez los momentos emocionales de una historia que, con cada vuelta, nos parece más plana y menos sensible. A la vez, la cuidada narrativa hace que las acciones que ejecutamos en el juego sean tan incomprensibles como entretenidas, poniendo al jugador en un brete: ¿deberíamos disfrutar tanto aniquilando simbólicamente a los amigos que queremos recuperar?
