  • With an extensive cast of characters, it is an experience that can either continually be approached in new ways or by sticking with a squad that you know and love. And while Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. debut may not match Fire Emblem’s now established solidarity, even in imperfection it packs enough punch to warrant a future amidst Nintendo’s stack of IP.

  • Experimentation is vastly more appealing without the pace-killing enemy turns gumming up the works. ...Not only did I go back and finish the game post-patch, I even kind of enjoyed myself, so starkly improved were the rhythms of planning, dying and restarting with a new strategy. This one simple change doesn't make Code Name: STEAM great, but it's a whole lot easier to deal with its faults after the patch and, by extension, a whole lot easier to recommend.

Code Name S.T.E.A.M. is a decent action strategy game. It has the makings of a great game in the same vein as Valkryria Chronicles, and while it is executed in a fairly clunky way, I still had a decent time with it. Strategy fans will get a lot out of this, while casual players can find a decent introduction to these types of games.

  • Bursting with unpredictability and tactical depth, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is a solid debut for Intelligent Systems’ latest spin on turn-based strategy. It feels like a foundation destined to be refined in a sequel because of its lack of character development and slow enemy turns, but its excellent action-heavy combat easily overshadows those blemishes. Online multiplayer and a meaty campaign, along with amiibo functionality, mean there’s plenty of fun to be had in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.‘s unique world....

  • By no means a bad game in the end, Codename S.T.E.A.M can barely carve out a niche for itself despite how stylish it looks. Underneath all that comical, jingoistic bluster is a pretty good strategy game with some pretty serious design flaws; flaws that make the title fun in the short term, but by the midway point it feels like it’s running out of steam.

  • However, poor design decisions that impact the game’s main combat mechanics may make for a much longer trip than anyone could anticipate. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. has the visuals and concept to go the distance, but unfortunately through some of the game’s more ill-advised ideas and concepts, it runs out of steam pretty quickly.

  • Here, there’s so much more potential to work with, and while the text does have its moments, it just doesn’t feel up to Nintendo of America’s high standards in several spots. I don’t know if their “A” writing team was busy elsewhere, but after a particularly well-crafted tale in Fire Emblem: Awakening, this one comes off as a disappointment at times with all the untapped potential.

  • There's a solid foundation of ideas here with Codename S.T.E.A.M, both in its outlandish character selection and its unique take on the strategy genre. The problem is both of these elements trip at the finish line, the cast with their boring and repetitious script and the strategy gameplay with its inconsistent pace. The Steam resource mechanic is a beautiful thing and I hope to see it again in a different element, but it's lost in a sea of monotony and idle hands.

  • Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is a fun, quirky new release from Nintendo. While there are a few flaws in the game design, we think that there's enough good here to justify a purchase from any Nintendo fan looking for something different. We'd love to see more of this compelling and riotous new world from Intelligent Systems; it's a great way to learn about classic literature...sort of.

  • Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. felt uneven to me. There's a lot of promise here, and the jovial experience was inviting. I loved the multiplayer far more than I expected to and look forward to many more hours playing it. The problem is a campaign that feels like it takes far too long for things to really happen, especially when all aliens move in real time and you have to clear multiple maps before you get a real stopping point.
