  • Super Smash Bros in all but name, this basic fighter just doesn't do enough with its fighting engine or character-rich licence

  • Fans will enjoy seeing their favourite characters going head-to-head, yet Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion proves a disappointment. It’s a shame to see such a strong IP once again have to endure such a lacklustre release. Even as a self-confessed Super Smash Bros. clone there’s potential here, it’s ideas are never fully realised.

There is the skeleton of a good game in here: a multiplayer-focused Smash Bros clone starring Cartoon Network characters. But it's just too buried under poor controls and a mediocre single player campaign to achieve fun status.

  • Without an online mode, the amount of enjoyment you'll be able to glean from this game will depend highly on the amount of people you know who own a 3DS. If you've got some nearby pals to play with, you can all join up to battle using only one cart; if not, you'll have to rely on CPU matches and the Story Mode to stay entertained.

  • Punch Time Explosion had a good opportunity to impress 3DS owners hungering for a worthwhile experience following the handheld’s weak launch lineup, but it simply falls in line with the other disappointments. Cartoon junkies may love seeing their heroes in action, but those used to Smash Bros. polish will want to pass on this one.

  • Plainly, Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion is not nearly on the same level as the Super Smash Bros. series, despite having a grossly similar gameplay style. More custom options for matches, better multiplayer features, and a more diverse soundtrack may have put it close. Also, the lack of collectables and achievements makes for poor replayability after you've unlocked all the maps and characters. But it's still the closest thing to SSB on a portable, so if you just can't wait for Nintendo's first-party entry, or are a diehard Cartoon Network fan, this game is right up your alley.

  • Punch Time Explosion has a host of cool characters, but without the support of exciting gameplay, their presence can only benefit the game so much. Unfortunately, like a cartoon starring your favorite superhero that doesn't make the most of his powers and personality, Punch Time Explosion leaves you disappointed.
