  • The game offers plenty of memorable moments and crafts an adolescent world that is both surreal and painfully truthful, but a poor job of porting means that you need to overcome a number of obstacles to get the most out of it. The platform--and the game--deserve more respect than this.

Judged solely on the merits of its content and its engaging combat and exploration styles of gameplay, Bully is well worth checking out. It hews closely to Rockstar's emphasis on the unheroic aspects of all of its characters and settings. By itself that's neither good nor bad, but it certainly provides for a lot less contrast than we'd like to have seen in an otherwise engaging and enjoyable story.

  • On the Xbox 360, it makes for a solid adaptation, and on the Wii it fills a gap in the software lineup with some decent Wii remote implementation to boot. If you missed delivering digital wedgies the first time around, a new set of in-game content and a two-player multiplayer mode in Bully: Scholarship Edition give it all the more reason to enroll.

  • Bully is a surprisingly simple and rather tame game by Rockstar's standards, but that's part of its charm. The sense of grandeur seen in the likes of San Andreas isn't here, but Bully has a sense of character that is unique. You'll care about sneaking back to your dorm after curfew, forgetting to buy flowers for the girl you quite fancy, or earning a few quid before school starts.

It's a shame that Rockstar hasn't elected to boost Bully's story and presentation to current-gen standards. Cut-scenes on 360 look dated. The limited emotes from the game's cast, that were overlooked on PS2, are now crying out for a full-on facial animation system.

  • Even without all the improvements, though, the underlying game has held up surprisingly well since its 2006 release. Bully's still a captivating, cartoonish adventure that packs a ton of activity into its deceptively small world, and it's still a lot of fun to run around dodging prefects and thwacking preppies with a slingshot.

  • This is definitely an excellent new edition of an already exquisite game. But unfortunately, that is where the problem lies in the Scholarship Edition. If you never got a chance to play the original Bully, you are really missing out and should pick up a copy of the superior Scholarship Edition as soon as possible. However, if you have already played Bully on the PS2, there really aren't a lot of compelling reasons to play through this version.

Bully: Scholarship Edition is a solid translation of the original PS2 game. It gives a little extra, but is at its core the same game. Though it has some limitations, particularly in the lack of depth of the social structure, there are many other great aspects to enjoy. And really, there is no other game like Bully on 360.

  • Had the crash problems not made it into the retail code, we might have scored it higher, but Rockstar's programmers are in detention this week sorting it out, so hopefully within a few days of your reading this we won't feel like beating them up behind the bike-sheds as we do now. The fact we're so happy to be playing Bully again in spite of this ought to speak for itself.

About the game

As a troublesome schoolboy, you'll laugh and cringe as you stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks on malicious kids, win or lose the girl, and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the fictitious reform school, Bullworth Academy.
