- Despite its age, Retribution is technically still in beta on PS4, but what’s here will hardly have you holding your breath in anticipation of what’s to come. ...Perhaps it would be different if Zombie had been more lenient with its economy, allowing you to try more before committing to buy. Retribution may be free to play, but you’re also free to walk away. Right now, in the interests of saving both time and money, that’s the smarter option.
Edge Staff · Jan 10, 2014 Reviewed on PS4 - Blacklight: Retribution is a tried-and-true shooter running on an aging, but dependable engine, though the mere mention of F2P is sure to send people running the other way. I’d prefer a retail release to cut the middleman out but I can live with the microtransaction structure as long as it isn’t critical for success. Blacklight is more than worth the price of admission and stands tall in the online multiplayer shooter arena on the PS4.
Michael Martin · Dec 21, 2013 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Temper your expectations, however, and you can squeeze a reasonable amount of entertainment from Retribution without paying a cent. ...Strapped for cash and looking for something punchy to play on your PS4? Blacklight: Retribution has its fun moments to balance out the frustrating ones. But with a few unpleasant quirks, some missing features, and a borderline draconian pricing model, it's hardly a must-have shooter for kicking off the new wave of current-gen gaming.
NATHAN MEUNIER · Dec 03, 2013 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Blacklight: Retribution surprised me in almost every aspect, because to be honest, I was going in with low expectations since it was free to play. I am glad to say I was very surprised with not only the quality of the graphics and gameplay, but how ‘free’ the game actually was. The biggest concern I usually have with free to play games is that they are actually “pay-to-win”.
Adam Dileva · Jul 09, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - This is not only a great example of a professional and credible free-to-play game, but it's also one of the best first-person shooters I've played. I am quite serious when I say that, too. This game is a serious FPS contender, and its freemium status should not diminish your expectations. I wholeheartedly recommend you jump in and give it a try. It'll cost only your time to give it a whirl, and I am certain that it'll be time well spent.
Jim Sterling · Apr 18, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - While not without flaws, Blacklight is a good option for anyone looking for a new competitive shooter. Great shooting mechanics and deep customization options make for an addictive combination, and its free-to-play model makes it easy to jump into with no upfront cost.
Anthony Gallegos · Apr 13, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The HRV is a useful tool, but far from a game changer, and the hardsuit, for all its power, isn't fun to use. Additional game modes called Siege and Netwar are in the works, and may help Retribution stand out a bit more from the pack, but as it stands, this is just another shooter. Still, it's solid and often exciting; if you've got a craving for standard shooter thrills, Retribution may satisfy those cravings without costing you a dime.
Carolyn Petit · Apr 10, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Still, Blacklight: Retribution is a polished, enjoyable shooter with a fast pace and unique mechanics that are easy to learn and fun to employ. Whatever minor fumbles it may make, the compelling design overrides them to the point where the game is easy to recommend. Plus, it's free. Who doesn't like free?
Shelby Reiches · Apr 09, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - In its defence, Retribution is free to play – so while it can’t compete with Killzone Shadow Fall, that’s an unfair expectation to begin with. But it’s still a PS4 release, and in this regard feels like a grubby stowaway that’s snuck aboard a glitzy cruise liner bound for the golden shores of next-gen. Other gratis titles such as War Thunder prove lack of price tag doesn’t justify a lack of quality. Meaning Retribution has a long way to go to prove itself worthy of your time and, eventually, cash.

About the game
Take firefights to a futuristic new level in Blacklight: Retribution, a free-to-play FPS. See through walls with the HRV, deploy mechanized Hardsuits, and customize your weapons to dominate the opposition.
In Blacklight, mastering the futuristic tech is half of victory. You'll need to carefully balance your loadout, from the extreme customization possible in designing your firearms, to the equipment you carry and the in-match bonuses you can unlock. The Hyper Reality Visor (HRV) allows you to look through walls and spot enemies, and attack from where they aren't expecting - but be careful, because you're vulnerable while using it.
