  • A Hat in Time is a hugely enjoyable take on the classic 3D platformer. The tight, familiar controls and varied, innovative levels result in one of the most fascinating and entertaining games out there. The issues with performance and the camera do little to wipe the smile from our faces while playing through this; if you adore the likes of Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, then you'll fall utterly in love with A Hat in Time.

  • A Hat In Time’s Switch port is sadly the worst way to play the game, however, beneath all its bugs and poor visuals, it’s the same aggressively fun and ruthlessly charming platformer. Its nine-hour runtime is filled with fluid gameplay, hilarious characters and diverse set of levels that toy around with the genre in the best way possible. A Hat In Time is simply one of the best platformers in years, and it’s worth dealing with the Switch’s technical limitations to experience.

  • A Hat in Time is an outstanding game that seeps cuteness and charm out of every pore. It excels in keeping the gameplay fresh in every single level, while still paying homage to the classic 3D platforming collectathons of the golden age of the 64-bit era. Anyone who enjoys these types of games needs to pick this one up immediately.

  • I’d be lying if I said my playthrough of A Hat in Time wasn’t chock full of that same familiar sentiment on enjoying a game purely on its controls or even its tone which the developer paints in large and confident strokes. Gears for Breakfast, like a lot of studios as of late, look back when moving forward and while the visuals plant the game’s influence within the more sixth-gen, early-2000’s period, A Hat in Time fortunately offers plenty in attitude and charisma to make its bold and brash visuals far from as abrasive as you might assume.

A Hat in Time is probably the best platformer released this year that doesn’t star that one plumber guy. Anyone who still has fond memories of classic N64 platformers owe it to themselves to check it out. Also for PS4 and XB1 owners this is about as good as it gets without Italian influence. For the price it is more than worth your time. Don’t sleep on this charming title.

  • I’m tempted to provide examples, but that would just ruin the surprise. I’ll just give you a little example. At one point, you need a photograph to forge an ID. So after some platforming around, you get a picture of Hat Kid, the main character. But for some reason, A Hat in Time drops you into a rudimentary paint program. Now you can draw on the picture. Why? Will you be scored? Will you earn gems to buy upgrades?

  • A Hat in Time excels with an overwhelming charm in its writing and art direction that overcomes any missteps in these areas. Its core, smooth mechanics also benefit from promising ideas, but none of them prevent the game from being pulled into a wormhole of mediocre level design and objectives. The potential for phenomenal platforming and exploration is here, but for every positive, there seems to be a negative in A Hat in Time.

  • A Hat in Time lacks polish, but it makes up for its shortcomings with excellent platforming and a universe I was happy to be part of. The whole experience is adorable, and in many ways it improves on the very platformers it uses as inspiration.

  • I applaud Gears for Breakfast for their ideas and vision, as A Hat in Time is in many ways truly original. I'm just really disappointed it wasn't better executed in terms of technical finesse.

  • A Hat in Time is a sensational platformer that boasts hours upon hours of inventive and diverse fun. There’s some issues with the consistency of the game, such as not properly relaying where you should be going early on, and the problems with the camera can be annoying too. With these small faults to the side, there’s not much else that I can complain about. The design, the visuals and the soundtrack are equally impressive and memorable, which can also be said about the cast. It goes without saying that following the bland release of Super Lucky’s Tale, Xbox players needed this.
